  abstract     = {{<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>Two slightly different, efficient tight‐binding (TB) models for the description of the electronic properties of nitride‐based semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have been developed and applied to the calculation of the electronic one‐particle spectrum of these structures. Using these one‐particle QD‐states, dipole and Coulomb matrix elements can be calculated, from which the optical properties of these systems can be obtained. These TB calculations have been performed for nitride‐based QDs with a cubic zincblende structure and those with a wurtzite crystal structure. In this paper, we discuss the general methodology used and the results obtained for the electronic one‐particle states and energies, for the dipole and Coulomb matrix elements, and for the excitonic optical emission and absorption spectra.</jats:p>}},

  abstract     = {{We demonstrate by spin quantum beat spectroscopy that in undoped symmetric (110)-oriented GaAs/AlGaAs
single quantum wells, even a symmetric spatial envelope wave function gives rise to an asymmetric in-plane
electron Land´e g-factor. The anisotropy is neither a direct consequence of the asymmetric in-plane Dresselhaus
splitting nor a direct consequence of the asymmetric Zeeman splitting of the hole bands, but rather it is a pure
higher-order effect that exists as well for diamond-type lattices. The measurements for various well widths are
very well described within 14 × 14 band k·p theory and illustrate that the electron spin is an excellent meter
variable for mapping out the internal—otherwise hidden—symmetries in two-dimensional systems. Fourth-order
perturbation theory yields an analytical expression for the strength of the g-factor anisotropy, providing a
qualitative understanding of the observed effects.}},

  abstract     = {{HDL-mutation based fault injection and analysis is considered as an important coverage metric for measuring the quality of design simulation processes [20, 3, 1, 2]. In this work, we try to solve the problem of automatic simulation data generation targeting HDL mutation faults. We follow a search based approach and eliminate the need for symbolic execution and mathematical constraint solving from existing work. An objective cost function is defined on the test input space and serves the guidance of search for fault-detecting test data. This is done by first mapping the simulation traces under a test onto a control and data flow graph structure which is extracted from the design. Then the progress of fault detection can be measured quantitatively on this graph to be the cost value. By minimizing this cost we approach the target test data. The effectiveness of the cost function is investigated under an example neighborhood search scheme. Case study with a floating point arithmetic IP design has shown that the cost function is able to guide effectively the search procedure towards a fault-detecting test. The cost calculation time as the search overhead was also observed to be minor compared to the actual design simulation time.}},

  abstract     = {{<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>Afferent proprioceptive information from the knee joint may be altered due to a reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), which could result in changes of cortical activity. The aim of the study is to look if force sensation and cortical activation measured by EEG are influenced by an ACL‐reconstruction when performing a force reproduction task. Nine patients after ACL reconstruction and nine healthy controls were asked to reproduce 50% of their maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) reproduction. EEG power values related to frequency bands and the error in reproduction were collected while performing the force reproduction. The aberration error demonstrated no significant differences between groups. The cortical activity results in significant higher frontal Theta power during the force reproduction task with the reconstructed limb (F3 and Fz: <jats:italic>p</jats:italic> &lt; 0.05) of the ACL group compared to the controls. The EEG was able to measure changes in electrocortical activity after ACL‐reconstruction in force reproduction, whereas performance data was not affected. The results were discussed in terms of differences in attentional control with involvement of the anterior cingulate cortex related to higher frontal Theta power in the ACL patients. © 2011 Orthopaedic Research Society Published by Wiley Periodicals, Inc.   abstract     = {{We introduce the Read-Write-Coding-System (RWC)  a very flexible class of linear block codes that generate efficient and flexible erasure codes for storage networks. In particular, given a message x of k symbols and a codeword y of n symbols, an RW code defines additional parameters k \leq r,w \leq n that offer enhanced possibilities to adjust the fault-tolerance capability of the code. More precisely, an RWC provides linear $\left(n,k,d\right)$-codes that have (a) minimum distance d=n-r+1 for any two codewords, and (b) for each codeword there exists a codeword for each other message with distance of at most w. Furthermore, depending on the values r,w and the code alphabet, different block codes such as parity codes (e.g. RAID 4/5) or Reed-Solomon (RS) codes (if r=k and thus, w=n) can be generated. In storage networks in which I/O accesses are very costly and redundancy is crucial, this flexibility has considerable advantages as r and w can optimally be adapted to read or write intensive applications; only w symbols must be updated if the message x changes completely, what is different from other codes which always need to rewrite y completely as x changes. In this paper, we first state a tight lower bound and basic conditions for all RW codes. Furthermore, we introduce special RW codes in which all mentioned parameters are adjustable even online, that is, those RW codes are adaptive to changing demands. At last, we point out some useful properties regarding safety and security of the stored data.}},

  abstract     = {{A study on the feasibility of aerosol processing of nearly monodisperse silicon nanoparticles via pyrolysis of monosilane in a hot wall reactor is presented. For optimal conditions silicon nanoparticles with a geometric standard deviation of 1.06 were synthesized at a production rate of 0.7 g/h. The size of the particles could be precisely controlled in the range of 20–40 nm, whilst maintaining a geometric standard deviation in the range of 1.06–1.08, by proper choice of the governing parameters temperature, residence time and precursor concentration. The results show that narrow particle size distributions can only be obtained in the temperature range between 900 and 1100 °C, as long as both the initial silane concentration (1 mbar silane partial pressure) and the reactor total pressure are low (25 mbar). This regime for the production of narrow particle size distributions has not been identified in prior work on the thermal decomposition of silane. Narrowly distributed particles can be obtained under conditions where nucleation and particle growth are separated and the agglomeration rates are negligible.}},

  abstract     = {{<jats:p>The extent to which the quality of dietary carbohydrates (CHO) changes throughout puberty is not known. We analysed trends in the quantity and quality of CHO intake among German adolescents by separately examining trends during puberty (pubertal trends) and trends in CHO intake from 1988 to 2007 (secular trends). Linear mixed-effects regression analyses were performed in 216 participants of the Dortmund Nutritional and Anthropometric Longitudinally Designed Study who had provided weighed 3 d dietary records at the onset of the pubertal growth spurt (defined by age at take-off) and over the subsequent 4 years. Over the course of puberty, CHO quality changed little: added sugar intake from beverages increased in girls (0·25 (<jats:sc>se</jats:sc> 0·12) % energy (% E)/year, <jats:italic>P</jats:italic> = 0·04) and added sugar intake from sweets decreased in both sexes (boys: − 0·22 (<jats:sc>se</jats:sc> 0·11) % E/year, <jats:italic>P</jats:italic> = 0·049; girls: − 0·20 (<jats:sc>se</jats:sc> 0·10) % E/year, <jats:italic>P</jats:italic> = 0·04). For both sexes, significant upward secular trends were observed for CHO (% E), glycaemic load (g/MJ) and added sugar intakes from sources other than sweets and soft drinks (% E), while absolute fibre intake (g/d) decreased (<jats:italic>P</jats:italic> ≤ 0·04). Concomitant increases in total added sugar intake (% E) and decreases in fibre and whole-grain densities (g/MJ) (<jats:italic>P</jats:italic> = 0·001–0·02) were confined to boys only. The quality of dietary CHO consumed by healthy German adolescents shows notable secular declines, but does not change markedly during puberty. Public health initiatives should be tailored to improve the overall quality of CHO nutrition.</jats:p>}},

  abstract     = {{<jats:p>Adequate dietary habits are supposed to be one of the most important modifiable factors in osteoporosis prevention. However, the importance of specific nutrients is controversial. We examined relevant nutrients which are supposed to have an impact on bone parameters and compared their effect sizes with those of two known predictors of bone development: bone-related muscle mass and androgen levels. We analysed nutritional, hormonal and anthropometric data from 107 prepubertal children participating in the Dortmund Nutritional and Anthropometric Longitudinally Designed Study. Diaphyseal bone mineral content (BMC), cortical area (CA), periosteal circumference, strength strain index and muscle area of the non-dominant forearm were measured by peripheral quantitative computed tomography. Data on long-term nutrient intakes (e.g. protein, Ca and vitamin D) were derived from 3 d weighed dietary records. Twenty-four hour urinary excretion rates of androgen metabolites including the sex steroid androstenediol were measured using GC–MS. Of all considered nutrients, only protein showed a trend for an association with BMC (β = +0·11; <jats:italic>P</jats:italic> = 0·073) and CA (β = +0·11; <jats:italic>P</jats:italic> = 0·056) in stepwise linear regression models. None of the other considered dietary variables was associated with bone parameters. The size of the bone anabolic effect of protein was partly comparable with that of androstenediol. Even though boys gained more bone mass in comparison with girls, the protein effect did not differ between sexes. Bone-related muscle area and sex steroids have the strongest effects on prepubertal diaphyseal bone. However, dietary protein may have a similar bone anabolic influence compared with androstenediol. In children without explicit nutrient deficits, protein seems to be the most important dietary component for diaphyseal bone status.</jats:p>}},
