  abstract     = {{This paper reveals the 3D character of the intermetallic layer at the aluminum–steel interface which pops
up above the original sample surface during annealing. Popping out of the intermetallics was proven using
atomic force microscopy. The phase expands out of the plane due to the exothermic formation of the Al5Fe2
phase and the feasibility of surface diffusion. Milling by a focused ion beam enabled the comparison of the
chemical composition of the surface layer with the bulk interface, showing no difference. The growth direction
is both towards aluminum and steel — the main diffusion flux is from aluminum towards steel, and the new
intermetallic phase emerges at the steel side. The shortage of Al atoms causes a shift of the intermetallic as a
whole towards aluminum.}},

  abstract     = {{<jats:p>A previous follow-up of the GINIplus study showed that breastfeeding could protect against early eczema. However, effects diminished in adolescence, possibly indicating a “rebound effect” in breastfed children after initial protection. We evaluated the role of early eczema until three years of age on allergies until young adulthood and assessed whether early eczema modifies the association between breastfeeding and allergies. Data from GINIplus until 20-years of age (N = 4058) were considered. Information on atopic eczema, asthma, and rhinitis was based on reported physician’s diagnoses. Adjusted Odds Ratios (aOR) were modelled by using generalized estimating equations. Early eczema was associated with eczema (aORs = 3.2–14.4), asthma (aORs = 2.2–2.7), and rhinitis (aORs = 1.2–2.7) until young adulthood. For eczema, this association decreased with age (p-for-interaction = 0.002–0.006). Longitudinal models did not show associations between breastfeeding and the respective allergies from 5 to 20 years of age. Moreover, early eczema generally did not modify the association between milk feeding and allergies except for rhinitis in participants without family history of atopy. Early eczema strongly predicts allergies until young adulthood. While preventive effects of full breastfeeding on eczema in infants with family history of atopy does not persist until young adulthood, the hypothesis of a rebound effect after initial protection cannot be confirmed.</jats:p>}},

  abstract     = {{The notion of neural collapse refers to several emergent phenomena that have been empirically observed across various canonical classification problems. During the terminal phase of training a deep neural network, the feature embedding of all examples of the same class tend to collapse to a single representation, and the features of different classes tend to separate as much as possible. Neural collapse is often studied through a simplified model, called the unconstrained feature representation, in which the model is assumed to have "infinite expressivity" and can map each data point to any arbitrary representation. In this work, we propose a more realistic variant of the unconstrained feature representation that takes the limited expressivity of the network into account. Empirical evidence suggests that the memorization of noisy data points leads to a degradation (dilation) of the neural collapse. Using a model of the memorization-dilation (M-D) phenomenon, we show one mechanism by which different losses lead to different performances of the trained network on noisy data. Our proofs reveal why label smoothing, a modification of cross-entropy empirically observed to produce a regularization effect, leads to improved generalization in classification tasks.}},

  abstract     = {{<jats:sec><jats:title>Background</jats:title><jats:p>The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a deepening of existing inequalities and a rollback of achievements made in gender equality. Women in Global Health (WGH) is a global movement that aims to achieve gender equality in health and increase female leadership in global health. Here, the aim was to understand how the pandemic affects the private and professional lives of women working in global health in different European countries. Suggestions for future pandemic preparedness including how gender perspectives should be integrated into pandemic preparedness and how a women's network such as WGH helped them to overcome the impact of the pandemic were explored.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Methods</jats:title><jats:p>Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted in September 2020 with a sample size of nine highly educated women with a mean age of 42.1 years from the different WGH European chapters. The participants were informed of the study and were formally asked for their consent. The interviews were held in English <jats:italic>via</jats:italic> an online videoconference platform and lasted 20–25 min each. The interviews were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis was conducted according to Mayring Qualitative Content Analysis using MAXQDA.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Results</jats:title><jats:p>The pandemic has both positive and negative effects on the professional and private lives of women. It led to an increased workload and stress as well as pressure to publish on COVID-19-related themes. Increased childcare and household responsibilities represented a double burden. The available space was limited if other family members were also working from home. Positive aspects included more time for family or partners and reduced travel. The participants report on perceived gender differences in the experience of the pandemic. International cooperation is considered to be a key factor for future pandemic preparedness. Being part of a women's network such as WGH was perceived as being very supportive in difficult situations during the pandemic.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Conclusion</jats:title><jats:p>This study provides unique insights into the experiences of women working in global health in different European countries. The COVID-19 pandemic influences their professional and private lives. Perceived gender differences are reported and suggest the need for integrating gender perspectives in pandemic preparedness. Networks for women, such as WGH, can facilitate the exchange of information in crises and provide women with professional and personal support.</jats:p></jats:sec>}},

  abstract     = {{<jats:p>We present the fabrication of strain-free quantum dots in the In0.53Ga0.47As/In0.52Al0.48As-system lattice matched to InP, as future sources for single and entangled photons for long-haul fiber-based quantum communication in the optical C-band. We achieved these quantum dots by local droplet etching via InAl droplets in an In0.52Al0.48As layer and subsequent filling of the holes with In0.53Ga0.47As. Here, we present detailed investigations of the hole morphologies measured by atomic force microscopy. Statistical analysis of a set of nanoholes reveals a high degree of symmetry for nearly half of them when etched at optimized temperatures. Overgrowth with 50–150 nm In0.52Al0.48As increases their diameter and elongates the holes along the [01̄1]-direction. By systematically scanning the parameter space, we were able to fill the holes with In0.53Ga0.47As, and by capping the filled holes and performing photoluminescence measurements, we observe photoluminescence emission in the O-band up into the C-band depending on the filling height of the nanoholes.</jats:p>}},

  abstract     = {{<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:sec><jats:title>Objective</jats:title><jats:p>Concerns about short‐ and long‐term consequences of repetitive heading contributed to heading restrictions in youth football in some countries. This prospective longitudinal cohort study aims to describe heading exposure in children's and youth football over two seasons using standardized video analysis.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Methods</jats:title><jats:p>All matches and training sessions of a male Under‐11 (<jats:italic>n</jats:italic> = 29), Under‐15 (<jats:italic>n</jats:italic> = 28), Under‐19 (<jats:italic>n</jats:italic> = 38), and female Under‐17 (<jats:italic>n</jats:italic> = 39) team were videotaped during the seasons 2019–2020 and 2020–2021. Heading frequencies and characteristics were analyzed. Individual heading exposure is presented as average incidence rates (IR) per 1000 match/training hours.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Results</jats:title><jats:p>In 275 matches and 673 training sessions, 22 921 headers were observed. Heading IR per player in matches was 1256 (Under‐11 m), 1608 (Under‐15 m), 1050 (Under‐17 f), and 1966 (Under‐19 m). In training sessions, IR per player was 739 (Under‐11 m), 2206 (Under‐15 m), 1661 (Under‐17 f), and 1419 (Under‐19 m). Five Under‐15 males headed the ball five to eight times per training on average. Most headers were performed without heading duels. Flight distance was predominantly 5–20 m (54%) in matches and &lt;5 m (65%) in training. While head impact location most frequently was at frontal areas, one‐third of all headers in Under‐11 in matches hit temporal, parietal, and occipital parts of the head.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Conclusion</jats:title><jats:p>Heading incidence was low in the youngest age group, whereas (predominantly five) Under‐15 males showed very high heading exposures in training. In assessment and regulation of heading burden, training sessions and individual heading behavior should specifically be addressed. Recommendations for heading the ball in practice should account for individual and age‐related differences.</jats:p></jats:sec>}},

  abstract     = {{Modern companies often face various challenges in concept development of products or systems. Design engineers prepare initial concepts as 3D models. These are then simulated by computational engineers. If requirements are not met, this necessitates an iterative process that runs between the design and computation departments until a valid concept is created. Design methods such as topology optimization are often used here. The upcoming result is then attempted to be adapted to certain manufacturing processes. These iteration loops can sometimes take a very long time, since the model construction and structural optimization generate large computational efforts. The present work shows on an example a methodical approach, which represents a first proof of concept, to solving this problem, including a description of methods and techniques, as well as possible problems in a detailed analysis concerning training data for neural networks and their abstraction capabilities. It is evident that additional research work needs to be conducted for further utilization in order to address all arising questions.}},
