In comparison to aluminium-copper, copper-copper interconnections require increased normal forces and ultrasonic power, which might lead to substrate damage due to increased mechanical stresses. One option to raise friction energy without increasing vibration amplitude between wire and substrate or bonding force is the use of two-dimensional vibration. The first part of this contribution reports on the development of a novel bonding system that executes two-dimensional vibrations of a tool-tip to bond a nail- like pin onto a copper substrate. Since intermetallic bonds only form properly when surfaces are clean, oxide free and activated, the geometries of tool-tip and pin were optimised using finite element analysis. To maximize the area of the bonded annulus the distribution of normal pressure was optimized by varying the convexity of the bottom side of the pin. Second, a statistical model obtained from an experimental parameter study shows the influence of different bonding parameters on the bond result. Two bottom-up techniques suitable for the formation of regular nanopatterns on\r\ndifferent length scales are nanosphere lithography (NSL) and block copolymer (BCP) lithography. In this\r\npaper it is shown that NSL and BCP lithography can be combined to easily design hierarchically nanopatterned\r\nsurfaces of different materials. Nanosphere lithography is used for the pre-patterning of\r\nsurfaces with antidots, i.e. hexagonally arranged cylindrical holes in thin films of Au, Pt and TiO2 on SiO2,\r\nproviding a periodic chemical and topographical contrast on the surface suitable for templating in subsequent\r\nBCP lithography. PS-b-PMMA BCP is used in the second self-assembly step to form hexagonally\r\narranged nanopores with sub-20 nm diameter within the antidots upon microphase separation. To\r\nachieve this the microphase separation of BCP on planar surfaces is studied, too, and it is demonstrated\r\nfor the first time that vertical BCP nanopores can be formed on TiO2, Au and Pt films without using any\r\nneutralization layers. To explain this the influence of surface energy, polarity and roughness on the microphase\r\nseparation is investigated and discussed along with the wetting state of BCP on NSL-pre-patterned\r\nsurfaces. The presented novel route for the creation of advanced hierarchical nanopatterns is easily applicable\r\non large-area surfaces of different materials. Speciﬁcally, I examine the eﬀects of two commonly used contract designs to exchange and develop intangible assets across group aﬃliates: licensing and cost sharing agreements. Whilst serving as a tool to allocate taxable income between group aﬃliates, the economic implications of licensing and cost sharing agreements diﬀer. Whereas licensing agreements provide for a sharing rule on the intangible’s proﬁts, cost sharing agreements on the other hand provide a sharing rule on R&D development costs. This diﬀerence matters when ﬁrms simultaneously use internal transfer prices to allocate taxable income and provide local management with suﬃcient investment incentives. Using a multiple-agent, moral hazard investment framework I model a multinational ﬁrm with comparable group afﬁliates in two countries that delegates the R&D investment decision to a local risk and eﬀort averse aﬃliate manager. The results suggest that the optimal contract not only depends on available tax beneﬁts, but also on R&D investment and manager speciﬁc characteristics. A licensing agreement provides management with larger incentives to invest in R&D mitigating agency concerns associated with R&D. On the other hand, using a cost sharing agreement the ﬁrm can cater diﬀerent risk preferences among managers potentially increasing investment.
