text: A novel strategy for the immobilization of Wilkinson’s catalyst on silica
nanoparticles is presented, employing pyridyl linkers as anchoring groups. The
coordination binding of the catalyst to the pyridyl linker via ligand exchange
of the trans-phosphine group is verified by 1 D and 2 D solid-state NMR spectroscopy.
Catalytic activities are monitored by GC employing the hydrogenation of styrene
as model reaction, and the leaching properties as well as the robustness of the
catalyst are investigated. The resulting immobilized catalyst shows high catalytic
activity, which is within a factor of three comparable to the homogeneous catalyst,
and excellent stability in leaching tests. Finally, it is efficient to produce
hyperpolarization in solution by employing parahydrogen-enriched hydrogen gas
    for hydrogenation.

text: The preparation of hierarchical and sophisticated particle architectures for
mimicking structural colors known from nature still remains a challenge. In this
study, the preparation of novel opal and double-inverse opal films based on thermally
treated metallopolymer core particles with a silica shell is described. Thermal
treatment leads to the formation of magnetic nanorattle-type particles. The main
challenge of artificial particles is to ensure sufficient dispersibility after
several synthetic steps. Especially silica particles providing surface hydroxyl
groups tend to sinter at high temperatures leading to agglomeration. We present
the introduction of trimethyl ethoxy silane (TMES) as an excellent functionalization
reagent as the key reaction step. The necessity and success of functionalization
are investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and zeta potential
measurements. Importantly, solid state NMR techniques are employed to gain deeper
insights into the chemical structure of the surface-attached reagent. Finally,
by this convenient functionalization the preparation of elastomeric opal films
and double-inverse opal films is proven successful revealing excellent optical
film properties. Moreover, magnetic properties of these novel films are investigated
by using magnetic force microscopy (MFM). The herein established route is expected
to pave the way for the preparation of a variety of advanced and stimuli-responsive
    optical materials.

text: The controlled catalytic functionalization of alkanes via the activation of
C-H bonds is a significant challenge. Although C-H activation by transition metal
catalysts is often suggested to operate via intermediate sigma-alkane complexes,
such transient species are difficult to observe due to their instability in solution.
This instability may be controlled by use of solid/gas synthetic techniques that
enable the isolation of single-crystals of well-defined sigma-alkane complexes.
Here we show that, using this unique platform, selective alkane C-H activation
occurs, as probed by H/D exchange using D-2, and that five different isotopomers/isotopologues
of the sigma-alkane complex result, as characterized by single-crystal neutron
diffraction studies for three examples. Low-energy fluxional processes associated
with the sigma-alkane ligand are identified using variable-temperature X-ray diffraction,
solid-state NMR spectroscopy, and periodic DFT calculations. These observations
connect sigma-alkane complexes with their C-H activated products, and demonstrate
that alkane-ligand mobility, and selective C-H activation, are possible when these
processes occur in the constrained environment of the solid-state.

text: "Semiconductor quantum-dot cavity systems are promising sources for solid-state-based
on-demand generation\r\nof single photons for quantum communication. Commonly,
the spectral characteristics of the emitted single\r\nphoton are fixed by system
properties such as electronic transition energies and spectral properties of the
cavity.\r\nIn the present work we study cavity-enhanced single-photon generation
from the quantum-dot biexciton through\r\na partly stimulated nondegenerate two-photon
emission. We show that frequency and linewidth of the single\r\nphoton can be
fully controlled by the stimulating laser pulse, ultimately allowing for efficient
all-optical spectral\r\nshaping of the single photon."

text: Spins in semiconductor quantum dots have been considered as prospective quantum
bit excitations. Their coupling to the crystal environment manifests itself in
a limitation of the spin coherence times to the microsecond range, both for electron
and hole spins. This rather short-lived coherence compared to atomic states asks
for manipulations on timescales as short as possible. Due to the huge dipole moment
for transitions between the valence and conduction band, pulsed laser systems
offer the possibility to perform manipulations within picoseconds or even faster.
Here, we report on results that show the potential of optical spin manipulations
with currently available pulsed laser systems. Using picosecond laser pulses,
we demonstrate optically induced spin rotations of electron and hole spins. We
further realize the optical decoupling of the hole spins from the nuclear surrounding
at the nanosecond timescales and demonstrate an all-optical spin tomography for
    interacting electron spin sub-ensembles.

text: For incident light polarized perpendicular to the tube axis the multi-band
semiconductor Bloch equations (MB-SBEs) that involve various screened interband
Coulomb interactions (ICIs) are derived. The calculated E 12 peak is very close
to the longitudinal excitonic peak E 22. Compared with the previous theoretical
peak positions, the blue-shift of the peak in our results is about 0.5 eV. Then,
subsequent detailed analyses show that the screening effect on the diagonal ICIs
(D-ICIs) plays a key role in this big blue-shift. The valley-degenerate transverse
pair excitations holding the same selection rule further enhance the screening
effect on D-ICIs. Specially at q = 0 the dielectric function acting on the D-ICIs
enhances two times. In our calculation the strong screening effect contributes
90% of the big blue-shift, while the non-diagonal ICIs (ND-ICIs) contribute to
    10% of the blue-shift.

  text:
Parametrization based methods have recently become very popular for
the generation of high quality quad meshes. In contrast to previous approaches,
they allow for intuitive user control in order to accommodate all kinds of application
driven constraints and design intentions. A major obstacle in practice, however,
are the relatively long computations that lead to response times of several minutes
already for input models of moderate complexity. In this paper we introduce a
novel strategy to handle highly complex input meshes with up to several millions
of triangles such that quad meshes can still be created and edited within an interactive
workflow. Our method is based on representing the input model on different levels
of resolution with a mechanism to propagate parametrizations from coarser to finer
levels. The major challenge is to guarantee consistent parametrizations even in
the presence of charts, transition functions, and singularities. Moreover, the
remaining degrees of freedom on coarser levels of resolution have to be chosen
carefully in order to still achieve low distortion parametrizations. We demonstrate
a prototypic system where the user can interactively edit quad meshes with powerful
high-level operations such as guiding constraints, singularity repositioning,
    and singularity connections.

  text:
This paper presents a method for bijective parametrization of 2D and
3D objects over canonical domains. While a range of solutions for the two-dimensional
case are well-known, our method guarantees bijectivity of mappings also for a
large, combinatorially-defined class of tetrahedral meshes (shellable meshes).
The key concept in our method is the piecewise-linear (PL) foliation, decomposing
the mesh into one-dimensional submanifolds and reducing the mapping problem to
parametrization of a lower-dimensional manifold (a foliation section). The maps
resulting from these foliations are proved to be bijective and continuous, and
shown to have provably bijective PL approximations. We describe exact, numerically
robust evaluation methods and demonstrate our implementation's capabilities on
    a large variety of meshes.
