text: "We present a technique for rendering highly complex 3D scenes in real-time
by\r\ngenerating uniformly distributed points on the scene's visible surfaces.
The\r\ntechnique is applicable to a wide range of scene types, like scenes directly\r\nbased
on complex and detailed CAD data consisting of billions of polygons (in\r\ncontrast
to scenes handcrafted solely for visualization). This allows to\r\nvisualize such
scenes smoothly even in VR on a HMD with good image quality,\r\nwhile maintaining
the necessary frame-rates. In contrast to other point based\r\nrendering methods,
we place points in an approximated blue noise distribution\r\nonly on visible
surfaces and store them in a highly GPU efficient data\r\nstructure, allowing
to progressively refine the number of rendered points to\r\nmaximize the image
quality for a given target frame rate. Our evaluation shows\r\nthat scenes consisting
of a high amount of polygons can be rendered with\r\ninteractive frame rates with
good visual quality on standard hardware."

text: Abstract Polylactide is a biodegradable versatile material based on annually
renewable resources and thus CO2-neutral in its lifecycle. Until now, tin(II)octanoate
[Sn(Oct2)] was used as catalyst for the industrial ring-opening polymerization
of lactide in spite of its cytotoxicity. On the way towards a sustainable catalyst,
three iron(II) hybrid guanidine complexes were investigated concerning their molecular
structure and applied to the ring-opening polymerization of lactide. The complexes
could polymerize unpurified technical-grade rac-lactide as well as recrystallized
l-lactide to long-chain polylactide in bulk with monomer/initiator ratios of more
than 5000:1 in a controlled manner following the coordination–insertion mechanism.
For the first time, a biocompatible complex has surpassed Sn(Oct)2 in its polymerization
activity under industrially relevant conditions.

text: Thermal treatment of hexaazatriphenylene-hexacarbonitrile (HAT-CN) in the
temperature range from 500 °C to 700 °C leads to precise control over the degree
of condensation{,} and thus atomic construction and porosity of the resulting
C2N-type materials. Depending on the condensation temperature of HAT-CN{,} nitrogen
contents of more than 30 at% can be reached. In general{,} these carbons show
adsorption properties which are comparable to those known for zeolites but their
pore size can be adjusted over a wider range. At condensation temperatures of
525 °C and below{,} the uptake of nitrogen gas remains negligible due to size
exclusion{,} but the internal pores are large and polarizing enough that CO2 can
still adsorb on part of the internal surface. This leads to surprisingly high
CO2 adsorption capacities and isosteric heat of adsorption of up to 52 kJ mol−1.
Theoretical calculations show that this high binding enthalpy arises from collective
stabilization effects from the nitrogen atoms in the C2N layers surrounding the
carbon atom in the CO2 molecule and from the electron acceptor properties of the
carbon atoms from C2N which are in close proximity to the oxygen atoms in CO2.
A true CO2 molecular sieving effect is achieved for the first time in such a metal-free
organic material with zeolite-like properties{,} showing an IAST CO2/N2 selectivity
of up to 121 at 298 K and a N2/CO2 ratio of 90/10 without notable changes in the
CO2 adsorption properities over 80 cycles.

text: Plastic freeforming (PF) is an additive-manufacturing process for producing
three-dimensional plastic parts based on 3D CAD data by applying plastic droplets
in layers. This process is used to produce customer-specific and complex geometries
(prototypes and small series) on organic sheets. A comparable serial process is
the injection of a second component onto organic sheets by injection molding.
A sufficient bond between the PF structure and the organic sheets is of particular
importance for each application. If this is not guaranteed, the composite system
cannot withstand the mechanical load and fails. The force exerted on the system
can no longer be transmitted between the PF structure and the organic sheet. The
organic sheet is made of glass fiber-reinforced polypropylene (PP). The connection
between the organic sheet and the PF structure is achieved by welding the molten
polymer droplets and the surface of the organic sheet. The PF structures are made
of PP to ensure sufficient compatibility with regard to the weldability of the
components. The processing of PP in the PF process is a challenge because PP is
a semicrystalline material. The shrinkage of semi-crystalline materials is significantly
higher compared to amorphous materials. Due to the layered structure of the components,
the shrinkage of the individual layers results in undesired warpage. The adhesive
strength between the organic sheet and the PF structure is investigated by determining
the bending strength in the 3-point bending test. The investigations include an
optimization of the process parameters to maximize the adhesive strength. The
experimental investigations show that an increase of the nozzle and build chamber
temperature leads to a higher adhesive strength. In further investigations, the
temperature of the nozzle shows no significant influence on the surface temperature
despite the expected heat radiation. The surface temperature is almost only dependent
on the temperature of the build chamber.

text: The invention relates to an optical junction between two optical planar waveguides.
For this purpose, an arrangement is provided of a first optical layer waveguide
(2) and a second optical slab waveguide (3), wherein the first optical layer waveguide
(2) and the second optical slab waveguide (3) different from each other is constant
over their respective length of thicknesses (d, r ) which the first optical layer
waveguide (2) with the second optical film waveguide (3) (by means of an optical
layer waveguide structure 4) is connected, which (along their entire length w)
has a thickness (h) which is between the thickness (d) the first optical waveguide
layer (2) and the thickness (r) of the second optical waveguide layer (3). According
to the invention, the thickness (h) of the optical layer waveguide structure (4)
over the entire length (w) of the optical layer waveguide structure (4) constant.
Thus, a possibility for an efficient and entailing low loss transition between
two optical planar waveguides is provided with different thickness.

text: The behavior of alkali atom point defects in polycrystalline CuInSe2 is studied.
In this work, three grain boundary models, one coherent twin boundary and two
twin boundaries with dislocation cores, are considered. Total energy calculations
show that all alkali metals tend to segregate at the grain boundaries. In addition,
the segregation of alkali atoms is more pronounced at the grain boundaries with
the dislocation cores. The diffusion of alkali metals along and near grain boundaries
is studied as well. The results show that the diffusion of alkali atoms in the
grain boundary models is faster than within the bulk. In addition, the ion exchange
between Na and Rb atoms at the grain boundaries leads to the Rb enrichment at
the grain boundaries and the increase of the Na concentration in the bulk. While
the effects of Na and Rb point defects on the electronic structure of the grain
boundary with the anion-core dislocation are similar, Rb atoms passivate the grain
boundary with the cation-core dislocation more effectively than Na. This can explain
the further improvement of the solar cell performance after the RbF-postdeposition
treatment.

Abstract
The stagnation point heat fluxes of methane/air flames impinging normal on a cylindrical surface were determined experimentally. Light induced phosphorescence from thermographic phosphors was used to investigate surface temperatures at the stagnation point from a nearly 1D laminar premixed flame burning against a water-cooled ceramic tube. The ceramic tube was coated with 1.1% chromium-doped alumina (ruby) at the impingement area and excited with a green light-emitting diode (LED) to measure the surface temperature. The flame temperature profiles were also measured with a thermocouple of type R (Pt/Pt  +  13% Rh). Effects on variations in cold gas velocity (0.1 m s−1–0.5 m s−1) relative to the flame speed, equivalence ratio (Ф  =  0.85–1.2), burner to impingement surface spacing (H/d  =  0.5–2) and surface curvature are reported. The stagnation point heat fluxes are strongly influenced by the flame stabilization mechanism, which changes from burner to wall stabilization, which also is seen from the measured flame temperature profiles. Increasing the cold gas velocity of the reactants leads to higher stagnation point heat fluxes. In addition, decreasing the distance between the burner and impingement surface increases the heat flux, with higher heat fluxes recorded for a tube compared to a flat plate.

text:
While observational studies show an association between 25(OH)vitamin
D concentrations and depressive symptoms, intervention studies, which examine
the preventive effects of vitamin D supplementation on the development of depression,
are lacking. To estimate the role of lowered 25(OH)vitamin D concentrations in
the etiology of depressive disorders, we conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization
(MR) study on depression, i.e., “depressive symptoms” (DS, n = 161,460) and “broad
depression” (BD, n = 113,769 cases and 208,811 controls). Six single nucleotide
polymorphisms (SNPs), which were genome-wide significantly associated with 25(OH)vitamin
D concentrations in 79,366 subjects from the SUNLIGHT genome-wide association
study (GWAS), were used as an instrumental variable. None of the six SNPs was
associated with DS or BD (all p > 0.05). MR analysis revealed no causal effects
of 25(OH)vitamin D concentration, either on DS (inverse variance weighted (IVW);
b = 0.025, SE = 0.038, p = 0.52) or on BD (IVW; b = 0.020, SE = 0.012, p = 0.10).
Sensitivity analyses confirmed that 25(OH)vitamin D concentrations were not significantly
associated with DS or BD. The findings from this MR study indicate no causal relationship
between vitamin D concentrations and depressive symptoms, or broad depression.
Conflicting findings from observational studies might have resulted from residual
confounding or reverse causation.
