Using German tax return data, we show that only a small fraction of entrepreneurs opt for corporate taxation, despite substantial potential tax savings. A pre registered incentivized online experiment demonstrates that complexity aversion, status quo bias, and misperception about the corporate tax burden—arising from the interaction of corporate and deferred dividend taxation—help explain the preference for partnership taxation. We further find that these behavioral frictions heighten liquidity risk under the corporate system, particularly in the face of unexpected cash flow needs. Finally, a survey of German tax advisors indicates that tax advice only partially mitigates these frictions. Some advisors misperceive the benefits of corporate taxation, while others anticipate client biases and therefore refrain from recommending the corporate tax system."}],"type":"working_paper","doi":"10.2139/ssrn.5378466","title":"Choosing the Wrong Box? Using firm-level measures of tax complexity, we find that a one standard deviation increase in tax complexity—comparable in magnitude to the rise following the U.S. Tax Cuts and Jobs Act—is associated with a 2.6% decline in Tobin’s Q. The effect is particularly pronounced for complexity arising from anti-avoidance regulations and post-filing procedures. The negative valuation effect is more substantial for firms with limited opportunities for international profit shifting, weak governance, or low internal information quality. Further analyses reveal that tax system complexity is associated with a reduced growth potential of firms and less R&D and thus negative real responses that go beyond negative investment effects. Overall, our findings provide novel evidence of the economic costs of tax complexity and contribute to the debate on the design of efficient and equitable tax systems."}],"type":"working_paper","doi":"10.2139/ssrn.5378221","title":"Tax Complexity and Firm Value","author":[{"first_name":"Anna-Sophie","last_name":"Braun","full_name":"Braun, Anna-Sophie"},{"first_name":"Reinald","full_name":"Koch, Reinald","last_name":"Koch"},{"first_name":"Caren","full_name":"Sureth-Sloane, Caren","id":"530","orcid":" 0000-0002-8183-5901","last_name":"Sureth-Sloane"}],"date_created":"2025-10-01T09:20:05Z","date_updated":"2025-10-01T09:27:34Z","jel":["M12","H26","H25","H32"],"citation":{"ieee":"A.-S. Joint tax audits aim to resolve potential tax disputes early, before such disputes escalate into costly and time-consuming resolution procedures that may not fully eliminate double taxation. Employing a game-theoretic model, we identify settings in which we expect joint audits to occur and investigate their effect on the firm's expected tax payments and tax audit efficiency. We find that the occurrence of joint audits critically depends on the double taxation risk in the absence of joint audits. Unless tax rules are consistently applied, joint audits can occur more often when this risk is higher. The reason is that the firm changes its income-shifting strategy to reduce its expected tax payments, and thereby also enables tax authorities to better target tax disputes via joint audits that would otherwise escalate. However, we identify conditions under which joint audits are then detrimental to tax audit efficiency, particularly when the firm prefers them most. Our results imply that cost-sharing arrangements for joint audits should be tailored to the level of double taxation risk, with firm involvement having the potential to improve efficiency when this risk is high."}],"type":"working_paper"},{"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"department":[{"_id":"187"}],"user_id":"97894","series_title":"Working Papers Dissertations 155","_id":"61502","status":"public","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"This study introduces sloppiness---the inaccurate preparation of supporting information during tax disputes---as a neglected but critical factor influencing taxpayer noncompliance. We conceptualize sloppiness as arising both from imperfections in the internal information environment, exacerbated by structural uncertainty over litigation outcomes (factual dimension), and from strategic aversion to compliance effort (strategic dimension). We examine whether and to what extent improved documentation and engaging an internal monitoring expert can mitigate sloppiness and prevent litigation. Using a game-theoretic model, we derive equilibrium strategies for a tax manager's compliance effort, a monitoring expert's dispute resolution effort, and a tax authority's litigation decision. Absent a monitoring expert, we find that improved documentation consistently reduces the litigation probability. However, when a monitoring expert is present, we surprisingly find that improved documentation crowds out compliance effort and can increase the litigation probability. Overall, our results suggest that sloppiness can be overcome either through strong documentation alone or by engaging a monitoring expert when documentation is weak, with the latter approach becoming more attractive as the dispute resolution costs decline."}],"type":"working_paper","title":"Sloppiness in Tax Disputes: How to Prevent Litigation?","date_created":"2025-10-02T08:34:26Z","author":[{"last_name":"Dyck","id":"83379","full_name":"Dyck, Daniel","first_name":"Daniel"},{"last_name":"Lorenz","full_name":"Lorenz, Johannes","first_name":"Johannes"},{"last_name":"Sureth-Sloane","orcid":" 0000-0002-8183-5901","full_name":"Sureth-Sloane, Caren","id":"530","first_name":"Caren"}],"date_updated":"2025-10-02T08:34:52Z","citation":{"apa":"Dyck, D., Lorenz, J., & Sureth-Sloane, C. Particularly in high-risk or uncertain situations, where AI explanations are intended to help users make more informed decisions, decision-making is influenced by emotional factors, impairing understanding and leading to suboptimal choices. While XAI research continues to evolve, greater consideration of users’ emotions and individual characteristics remains necessary. Broadening empirical studies in this area could foster a more comprehensive understanding of decision-making processes following explanations, especially in relation to the interaction between emotions and cognition. In response, this study seeks to contribute to this area by employing an experimental design to examine the effects of AI explanations and emotion regulation on user reliance and trust of emotional users. They fuel political polarization, which is particularly evident in the battleground of social media. Nevertheless, we hardly pay attention to ideologies, their narratives, functions and organizations in economic theory today. Ideologies as “non-rational beliefs” seem incompatible with rationality in economic models. \r\n\r\nTherefore, the book examines the role of ideologies and belief systems in individual decision-making behavior from an economic and rational perspective. Due to the fact that people have incomplete information, belief systems and ideologies fulfill a number of important functions. While ideologies themselves serve psychological needs, they are used as a cognitive framework for rational decision-making once they have been adopted through a Bayesian learning process. They influence decisions in a wide range of areas, from consumption and work to politics. This is where the role of ideological organizations becomes important, because they determine the ideological direction of the narratives and their dissemination. \r\n\r\nThus, ideologies give a normative direction, for better or for worse. The “quality” of ideological leadership can be evaluated normatively on the basis of principles such as individual sovereignty and human dignity. A democratic discourse requires an information and communication system that enables an evaluation of precisely these ideologies, free from resource and information power.\r\n"}],"type":"book"},{"volume":35,"author":[{"first_name":"Tilo","last_name":"Böhmann","full_name":"Böhmann, Tilo"},{"first_name":"Angela","last_name":"Roth","full_name":"Roth, Angela"},{"full_name":"Satzger, Gerhard","last_name":"Satzger","first_name":"Gerhard"},{"full_name":"Benz, Carina","last_name":"Benz","first_name":"Carina"},{"full_name":"Beverungen, Daniel","last_name":"Beverungen","first_name":"Daniel"},{"first_name":"Andreas","full_name":"Boes, Andreas","last_name":"Boes"},{"last_name":"Breidbach","full_name":"Breidbach, Christoph","first_name":"Christoph"},{"last_name":"Gersch","full_name":"Gersch, Martin","first_name":"Martin"},{"full_name":"Gudergan, Gerhard","last_name":"Gudergan","first_name":"Gerhard"},{"last_name":"Hogreve","full_name":"Hogreve, Jens","first_name":"Jens"},{"last_name":"Kurtz","full_name":"Kurtz, Christian","first_name":"Christian"},{"first_name":"Barbara","last_name":"Langes","full_name":"Langes, Barbara"},{"first_name":"Jan Marco","last_name":"Leimeister","full_name":"Leimeister, Jan Marco"},{"last_name":"Lewandowski","full_name":"Lewandowski, Tom","first_name":"Tom"},{"full_name":"Meiren, Thomas","last_name":"Meiren","first_name":"Thomas"},{"last_name":"Nägele","full_name":"Nägele, Rainer","first_name":"Rainer"},{"first_name":"Stefanie","last_name":"Paluch","full_name":"Paluch, Stefanie"},{"first_name":"Christoph","full_name":"Peters, Christoph","last_name":"Peters"},{"first_name":"Jens","full_name":"Poeppelbuss, Jens","last_name":"Poeppelbuss"},{"first_name":"Susanne","full_name":"Robra-Bissantz, Susanne","last_name":"Robra-Bissantz"},{"first_name":"Carsten","last_name":"Schultz","full_name":"Schultz, Carsten"},{"first_name":"Jan H.","full_name":"Schumann, Jan H.","last_name":"Schumann"},{"last_name":"Wirtz","full_name":"Wirtz, Jochen","first_name":"Jochen"},{"first_name":"Nancy V.","full_name":"Wünderlich, Nancy V.","last_name":"Wünderlich"}],"date_updated":"2025-11-10T10:19:25Z","doi":"10.1007/s12525-025-00771-1","publication_identifier":{"issn":["1019-6781","1422-8890"]},"has_accepted_license":"1","publication_status":"published","intvolume":" 35","citation":{"bibtex":"@article{Böhmann_Roth_Satzger_Benz_Beverungen_Boes_Breidbach_Gersch_Gudergan_Hogreve_et al._2025, title={Continuous value shaping: A boundary concept for innovating service innovation approaches}, volume={35}, DOI={10.1007/s12525-025-00771-1}, number={127}, journal={Electronic Markets}, publisher={Springer Science and Business Media LLC}, author={Böhmann, Tilo and Roth, Angela and Satzger, Gerhard and Benz, Carina and Beverungen, Daniel and Boes, Andreas and Breidbach, Christoph and Gersch, Martin and Gudergan, Gerhard and Hogreve, Jens and et al.}, year={2025} }","short":"T. While a variety of disciplines are developing new approaches to drive service innovation, this is primarily done in isolation and generates only fragmented solutions. Sociological theory has proposed “boundary objects” as an effective umbrella for communication and cooperation among communities. Therefore, we introduce continuous value shaping (CVS) as a boundary object describing service innovation approaches along five principles. We reflect on this concept through the different disciplinary lenses of researchers in service marketing, information systems, service engineering, sociology of work, and innovation management. These perspectives highlight how the CVS principles already connect to discourses within the individual disciplines. However, the CVS concept will not only provide an umbrella to embrace existing activities in different academic disciplines. It also assists to identify research themes that will benefit from uniting the power of these disciplines, and it can serve as an integrating framework to conceptualize complex service innovation approaches. Thus, the CVS concept should guide both researchers and practitioners to develop and implement novel innovation and transformation efforts—in and across organizations."}]}]
