text: 'Unintended consequences in Information Systems (IS) research are typically
examined only after they have surfaced in practice, often treated as isolated
instances rather than being systematically identified and understood. This reactive
stance constrains our ability to anticipate risks, recognize emerging opportunities,
and build cumulative insights across studies. To assess the current state of IS
research on unintended consequences, we conducted a scoping review of literature
in the Association for Information Systems'' Senior Scholars'' Basket of Journals.
Our review highlights significant gaps in how unintended consequences are defined,
theorized, and systematically compared. To address these gaps, we propose three
foundational considerations: (1) conceptual clarity, to refine definitions and
delineate boundaries; (2) relational configurations, to analyze the interplay
between actors, technologies, and contexts; and (3) temporal configurations, to
capture the evolving nature of consequences over time. Building on these dimensions,
we introduce a set of guiding questions designed to provide shared analytical
vocabulary rather than a prescriptive framework. These questions enable researchers
to more systematically identify, categorize, and compare unintended consequences
across contexts, thereby fostering theoretical precision, facilitating cross-contextual
learning, and supporting a more anticipatory and comprehensive understanding of
    the phenomenon.'

text: Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) systems empower platforms to dynamically
create, optimize and adapt content promising to create novel benefits for platform’s
viability. However, we know little about how the integration of GenAI into digital
platforms redefines complementors’ role as a result of GenAI autonomously generating
content which was previously exclusively performed by complementors. To understand
how platforms can manage the changing role of complementors in response to AI
generated content, we draw from an in-depth qualitative study of a digital learning
platform. By using a boundary work lens, our empirical case allows us to explore
which tension arises between platform complementors and GenAI, and how the platform
provider engages in different practices to manage the changing role of complementors
to ensure the platform’s viability. Our study aims to contribute to the literature
    on GenAI and digital platforms.

text: 'The platform economy introduces novel challenges and opportunities at the
intersection of organizational structure, stakeholder relationships, and societal
impact (Ashford et al., 2018; Caza et al., 2022; Cropanzano et al., 2023; Fieseler
et al., 2019; Kuhn & Maleki, 2017). Following the call for rigorous methodological
research on platform workers (Cropanzano et al., 2023), this symposium sheds light
on the career development of platform workers by taking central stakeholders (e.g.,
workers, requesters, platform) into account. The five contributions cover diverse
methodological approaches (e.g., longitudinal qualitative interviews, longitudinal
quantitative surveys, diary studies), investigating online and offline platform
workers from different online labor platforms (OLPs) in Asia, Europe, and the
US. We bring together researchers from different fields (e.g., economics, management,
psychology). They investigate how platform workers experience working on OLPs
and how such experiences shape their careers. The symposium’s contributions collectively
deepen our understanding of the platform economy by addressing platform design
(cf. presentation [P] #P1, #P2), psychological aspects, such as well-being, linked
to the interaction of workers with the requesters (cf. #P3), the decision-making
of workers within the platform economy and its link to the gender pay gap (cf.
#P4), and by proposing a novel framework of Transactional Careers to better understand
the complex career development of platform workers (cf. #P5). This symposium will
provide a platform for exchange among scholars from different fields interested
in the platform economy to contributes substantial scientific implications for
platform workers, policymakers, and OLPs for their important endeavor to develop
a sustainable digitalized labor market, considering the role of different stakeholders.'

  text:
Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is rapidly becoming a viable
tool to enhance productivity and act as a catalyst for innovation across various
sectors. Its ability to perform tasks that have traditionally required human judgment
and creativity is transforming knowledge and creative work. Yet it also raises
concerns and implications that could reshape the very landscape of knowledge and

text: Organizations leverage artificial intelligence (AI) systems to augment or
automate employee decision-making practices. These changes often transform employees’
occupation significantly and, thus, the way employees perceive themselves as professionals.
By making use of qualitative insights from three case organizations that introduced
AI systems for decision making, we explore how AI systems affect employees’ occupational
identity. Our findings uncover three important dimensions that shape the way AI
systems affect occupational identity. Based on our insights, we derive implications
for the successful introduction of AI systems and highlight potential pitfalls
that may arise from different organizational strategies used to introduce AI systems.

text: In gig work, individuals engage in project-based work outside traditional
organizational structures. While some workers value the autonomy and flexibility
of gig work, they also face unique challenges, including job insecurity and a
lack of available career paths. Platforms are very limited in actively providing
resources to their workers. However, platforms can shape their workers’ work environment
by actively prioritizing different design attributes. Our study is among the first
to uncover how these attributes contribute to workers’ intention to pursue a lasting
career in gig work. Based on a PLS modelling approach with data from a two-wave
quantitative survey involving 652 gig workers, we find that platforms’ utilitarian,
hedonic, and relational design positively affect gig workers’ career commitment.
Furthermore, we find evidence for the mediating role of gig workers’ thriving.
Our research contributes to a better understanding of how platform design attributes
can contribute to careers on gig work platforms.

text: 'The rapid advancement of AI and automation is reshaping virtually every facet
of contemporary business and society. Simultaneously, these emerging technologies
also give rise to complex challenges for individuals and organizations to navigate.
These challenges range from ensuring data privacy, and mitigating bias and discrimination,
to maintaining transparency, trust, fairness and autonomy. Moreover, these challenges
are differently perceived depending on the stakeholders involved. Our paper proposes
a comprehensive framework that provides practical guidance based on 12 groups
of questions for stakeholders to consider. We integrated and synthesized knowledge
from three areas: responsible AI, stakeholder theory, and decision-making models.
Our study seeks to enrich discourses on the responsible use of AI by providing
a structured approach incorporating theoretical concepts with real-world applications.'

text: Advancing digital collaboration and fostering effective communication among
a widespread workforce continues to be a perpetual challenge for companies. Organizations
are progressively turning to Enterprise Social Media (ESM) because they promise
new avenues for collaborative working. However, most ESMs fail to reach a wider
adoption by the workforce, owing to an underutilization by the employees. To enhance
the understanding of the underutilization phenomenon, we use affordance actualization
theory as our theoretical lens to critically study the challenges employees face
in their attempt to actualize respective ESM affordances. By analyzing comments
from 992 frequent, infrequent, and discontinued ESM users from a large multinational
company, we uncover four major challenges. By enhancing our understanding of ESM
affordances and by incorporating the full spectrum from problem identification
to solution, we provide practical advice for digital leaders and meaningful theoretical
    implications for the IS community.

text: The introduction of advanced algorithmic technologies to augment or automate
employees’ work tasks increasingly transform employees’ social relationships.
Through a qualitative, in-depth case study in the banking industry, we identify
two different forms of algorithmic technologies that employees use. In doing so,
we reveal how decision-taking technology negatively affects the quantity of social
interactions with customers and colleagues, and consequently the quality of social
relationships. However, we also uncover how a second set of algorithmic technologies,
which is used for consultation, reduces the quantity of interactions, but enhances
the quality of the social relationships with colleagues and customers. Based on
six different aspects of social relations, we highlight commonalities and differences
between algorithmic technologies with regard to their impact on employees' social
relationships and derive relevant theoretical and practical implications.

  text:
Abstract
Work is increasingly being organised
via online platforms outside guiding organisational structures. Instead of having

how crowd workers build professional holding environments in online communities
to compensate for the lack of organisational structures and we consider how they
craft their crowd work activities to enhance their work experience and reduce
its long‐term precarity. Following a qualitative research design, this paper uses

these artists consistently struggle to acquire sufficient funding for their projects
and their livelihood. New technology-supported possibilities for funding artists
and their projects have emerged in recent years. Initial Coin Offering (ICO) is
a novel form of reward-based tokenized crowdfunding. Although ICOs are promising

four barriers that hinder the funding of artistic projects through ICOs: legal

resistance. Our research contributes to cultural finance and funding literature
by disclosing barriers that impede a promising form of financing artistic projects.
Further, we outline possible solutions to overcome them. We also contribute to

  text:
Artificial intelligence (AI) systems in the workplace increasingly
substitute for employees’ tasks, responsibilities, and decision-making. Consequently,
employees must relinquish core activities of their work processes without the
ability to interact with the AI system (e.g., to influence decision-making processes
or adapt or overrule decision-making outcomes). To deepen our understanding of
how substitutive decision-making AI systems affect employees’ professional role
identity and how employees adapt their identity in response to the system, we
conducted an in-depth case study of a company in the area of loan consulting.
We qualitatively analyzed more than 60 interviews with employees and managers.
Our research contributes to the literature on IS and identity by disclosing mechanisms
through which employees strengthen and protect their professional role identity
despite being unable to directly interact with the AI system. Further, we highlight
the boundary conditions for introducing an AI system and contribute to the body
of empirical research on the potential downsides of AI.

text: In times of frequent technology induced change processes, the multiplier concept
represents a cost-effective and, above all, successful way to manage change processes
from within the team, based on the reciprocal influence of employees on a horizontal
level. By using a qualitative approach within a German state police force, we
investigate the impact of multipliers on the implementation of an Enterprise Social
Network. Building on ability, benevolence, and integrity as attendances of trust,
we derive important managerial implications on how to successfully integrate multipliers
as knowledge mediators, communication link, and active persuaders, in order to
promote change. Multipliers are instrumental to successfully transform aversion
and fear into eagerness for knowledge and high adoption rates. Furthermore, we
highlight the connection between research on in-house education and communications
sciences in the context of organizational development, providing an alternative
approach for the successful implementation of new technologies.

text: 'Organizations have increasingly begun to implement enterprise social networks
(ESNs) due to their potential to afford enterprise-wide collaboration, knowledge
sharing, and interaction. Despite their proliferation, many companies still struggle
to motivate a sufficient number of employees to actively participate in these
collaborative networks. Consequently, many ESNs fail due to a lack of contributions.
While most employees only read and consume content (lurking), few actively create
content (posting). Little research has examined the differences between posters
and lurkers and their underlying motivations, particularly in the ESN context.
Building on social exchange theory (SET), we identify and test a set of motivational
factors that researchers have scarcely studied in corporate social networks: reputation,
common identity, common bond, social interaction, and community commitment. By
investigating a rich data set of 4,892 respondents in a large knowledge-intensive
multinational company, we provide evidence that posters and lurkers significantly
differ in why they participate in ESNs. Further, we introduce a nuanced classification
of participant roles to distinguish five user groups (super frequent posters,
frequent posters, infrequent posters, frequent lurkers, and infrequent lurkers)
with super frequent posters showing significantly higher mean values for all motivational
factors to use an ESN compared to the other user groups. Our findings yield important
theoretical and practical implications regarding different usage behaviors and
on how to enhance participation in ESNs.'

of the main reasons for this dilemma is the fact that most employees only read
and consume content (lurking), and very few actively participate and create content
(posting). While a major research strand has studied motivations for posting and
lurking behaviors in online communities, there is little research on motivations
in ESNs. To bridge these gaps, this study examines whether posters and lurkers
differ in their motivations to use ESNs. Building on social exchange theory, we
analyze the impact of the underlying motivational factors such as common identity,
common bond, social interaction, and community commitment, which have not yet
been studied in the ESN context. We test our propositions with data collected
from 4,892 respondents in a large knowledge-intensive multinational company. We
are able to distinguish between five user groups (super frequent posters, frequent
posters, infrequent posters, frequent lurkers and infrequent lurkers) with super
frequent posters showing significantly higher mean values for all motivational
drivers to use the ESN compared to the other user groups.
