Metrics such as ECT, RNSB, and WEAT quantify bias in these models based on predefined word lists representing social groups and bias-conveying concepts. How suitable these lists actually are to reveal bias - let alone the bias metrics in general - remains unclear, though. In this paper, we study how to assess the quality of bias metrics for word embedding models. In particular, we present a generic method, Bias Silhouette Analysis (BSA), that quantifies the accuracy and robustness of such a metric and of the word lists used. Given a biased and an unbiased reference embedding model, BSA applies the metric systematically for several subsets of the lists to the models. The variance and rate of convergence of the bias values of each model then entail the robustness of the word lists, whereas the distance between the models' values gives indications of the general accuracy of the metric with the word lists. We demonstrate the behavior of BSA on two standard embedding models for the three mentioned metrics with several word lists from existing research.","lang":"eng"}],"citation":{"short":"M. In this paper, we argue that a novel conceptual framework is needed to overcome shortcomings of existing AI systems with little attention to processes of interaction and learning. Drawing from research in interaction and development, we first outline the novel conceptual framework that pushes the design of AI systems toward true interactivity with an emphasis on the role of the partner and social relevance. We propose that AI systems will be able to provide a meaningful and relevant explanation only if the process of explaining is extended to active contribution of both partners that brings about dynamics that is modulated by different levels of analysis. Accordingly, our conceptual framework comprises monitoring and scaffolding as key concepts and claims that the process of explaining is not only modulated by the interaction between explainee and explainer but is embedded into a larger social context in which conventionalized and routinized behaviors are established. We discuss our conceptual framework in relation to the established objectives of transparency and autonomy that are raised for the design of explainable AI systems currently.","lang":"eng"}],"issue":"3","publication":"IEEE Transactions on Cognitive and Developmental Systems","department":[{"_id":"603"},{"_id":"749"},{"_id":"424"},{"_id":"67"},{"_id":"574"},{"_id":"184"},{"_id":"757"},{"_id":"54"},{"_id":"178"}],"keyword":["Explainability","process ofexplaining andunderstanding","explainable artificial systems"],"type":"journal_article","date_created":"2021-09-14T20:52:57Z","file":[{"creator":"haebumb","date_created":"2023-11-20T16:33:51Z","relation":"main_file","date_updated":"2023-11-20T16:33:51Z","file_name":"2020-12-01_explainability_final_version.pdf","access_level":"open_access","file_size":626217,"file_id":"49081","content_type":"application/pdf"}],"has_accepted_license":"1","status":"public","volume":13,"ddc":["300"],"user_id":"42933","_id":"24456","page":"717-728","project":[{"grant_number":"438445824","_id":"109","name":"TRR 318: TRR 318 - Erklärbarkeit konstruieren"}],"quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"ieee":"K. However, existing approaches\r\ndo not perform any audience-specific adaptation. In this work, we aim to bridge\r\nthis gap by studying the task of belief-based claim generation: Given a\r\ncontroversial topic and a set of beliefs, generate an argumentative claim\r\ntailored to the beliefs. To tackle this task, we model the people's prior\r\nbeliefs through their stances on controversial topics and extend\r\nstate-of-the-art text generation models to generate claims conditioned on the\r\nbeliefs. Our automatic evaluation confirms the ability of our approach to adapt\r\nclaims to a set of given beliefs. In a manual study, we additionally evaluate\r\nthe generated claims in terms of informativeness and their likelihood to be\r\nuttered by someone with a respective belief. Our results reveal the limitations\r\nof modeling users' beliefs based on their stances, but demonstrate the\r\npotential of encoding beliefs into argumentative texts, laying the ground for\r\nfuture exploration of audience reach.","lang":"eng"}],"citation":{"chicago":"Alshomary, Milad, Wei-Fan Chen, Timon Gurcke, and Henning Wachsmuth. “Belief-Based Generation of Argumentative Claims.” In <i>Proceedings of the 16th Conference of the European Chapter of the Association for Computational Linguistics: Main Volume</i>, 224–33.
