However, a person affected by an AI system may not be convinced by AI system design alone---neither should they, if the AI system is embedded in a social context that gives good reason to believe that it is used in tension with a person’s interest. In such cases, distrust in the system may be justified and necessary to build meaningful trust in the first place. We propose the term \\emph{healthy distrust} to describe such a justified, careful stance towards certain AI usage practices. We investigate prior notions of trust and distrust in computer science, sociology, history, psychology, and philosophy, outline a remaining gap that healthy distrust might fill and conceptualize healthy distrust as a crucial part for AI usage that respects human autonomy."}],"project":[{"name":"TRR 318 - B3: TRR 318 - Subproject B3","_id":"122"},{"name":"TRR 318 - C1: TRR 318 - Subproject C1 - Gesundes Misstrauen in Erklärungen","_id":"124"},{"_id":"370","name":"TRR 318 - B06: TRR 318 - Teilprojekt B6 - Ethik und Normativität der erklärbaren KI"}],"date_created":"2025-05-16T09:39:13Z","type":"preprint","oa":"1","department":[{"_id":"424"},{"_id":"26"},{"_id":"756"}],"year":"2025","title":"Healthy Distrust in AI systems","status":"public","author":[{"last_name":"Paaßen","first_name":"Benjamin","full_name":"Paaßen, Benjamin"},{"full_name":"Alpsancar, Suzana","last_name":"Alpsancar","first_name":"Suzana","id":"93637"},{"id":"65695","full_name":"Matzner, Tobias","first_name":"Tobias","last_name":"Matzner"},{"full_name":"Scharlau, Ingrid","first_name":"Ingrid","orcid":"0000-0003-2364-9489","last_name":"Scharlau","id":"451"}],"date_updated":"2025-11-18T09:38:01Z","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2505.09747"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"_id":"59917","user_id":"93637"},{"page":"3015–3033","publisher":"Springer","_id":"57531","user_id":"93637","volume":5,"status":"public","oa":"1","citation":{"chicago":"Alpsancar, Suzana, Heike M. The goal of providing or seeking explanations is to achieve (better) ‘understanding’ on the part of the explainee. However, what it means to ‘understand’ is still not clearly defined, and the concept itself is rarely the subject of scientific investigation. This conceptual article aims to present a model of forms of understanding for XAI-explanations and beyond. From an interdisciplinary perspective bringing together computer science, linguistics, sociology, philosophy and psychology, a definition of understanding and its forms, assessment, and dynamics during the process of giving everyday explanations are explored. Two types of understanding are considered as possible outcomes of explanations, namely enabledness, ‘knowing how’ to do or decide something, and comprehension, ‘knowing that’ – both in different degrees (from shallow to deep). Explanations regularly start with shallow understanding in a specific domain and can lead to deep comprehension and enabledness of the explanandum, which we see as a prerequisite for human users to gain agency. In this process, the increase of comprehension and enabledness are highly interdependent. Against the background of this systematization, special challenges of understanding in XAI are discussed."}],"date_created":"2025-09-08T14:24:32Z","file":[{"creator":"hbuschme","date_created":"2025-12-01T21:02:20Z","relation":"main_file","date_updated":"2025-12-01T21:02:20Z","file_name":"Buschmeier-etal-2025-COGSYS.pdf","file_size":10114981,"access_level":"closed","file_id":"62730","success":1,"content_type":"application/pdf"}],"department":[{"_id":"660"}],"keyword":["understanding","explaining","explanations","explainable","AI","interdisciplinarity","comprehension","enabledness","agency"],"type":"journal_article","author":[{"id":"76456","first_name":"Hendrik","last_name":"Buschmeier","orcid":"0000-0002-9613-5713","full_name":"Buschmeier, Hendrik"},{"id":"27152","last_name":"Buhl","first_name":"Heike M.","full_name":"Buhl, Heike M."},{"full_name":"Kern, Friederike","last_name":"Kern","first_name":"Friederike"},{"id":"57578","full_name":"Grimminger, Angela","last_name":"Grimminger","first_name":"Angela"},{"id":"50995","last_name":"Beierling","first_name":"Helen","full_name":"Beierling, Helen"},{"last_name":"Fisher","first_name":"Josephine Beryl","orcid":"0000-0002-9997-9241","full_name":"Fisher, Josephine Beryl","id":"56345"},{"id":"93405","orcid":"0000-0002-9593-7220","first_name":"André","last_name":"Groß","full_name":"Groß, André"},{"last_name":"Horwath","first_name":"Ilona","full_name":"Horwath, Ilona","id":"68836"},{"id":"98454","full_name":"Klowait, Nils","orcid":"0000-0002-7347-099X","first_name":"Nils","last_name":"Klowait"},{"id":"90345","orcid":"0009-0009-0892-9483","first_name":"Stefan Teodorov","last_name":"Lazarov","full_name":"Lazarov, Stefan Teodorov"},{"first_name":"Michael","last_name":"Lenke","full_name":"Lenke, Michael"},{"full_name":"Lohmer, Vivien","first_name":"Vivien","last_name":"Lohmer"},{"full_name":"Rohlfing, Katharina","last_name":"Rohlfing","orcid":"0000-0002-5676-8233","first_name":"Katharina","id":"50352"},{"id":"451","first_name":"Ingrid","last_name":"Scharlau","orcid":"0000-0003-2364-9489","full_name":"Scharlau, Ingrid"},{"id":"91018","full_name":"Singh, Amit","last_name":"Singh","orcid":"0000-0002-7789-1521","first_name":"Amit"},{"id":"37320","full_name":"Terfloth, Lutz","last_name":"Terfloth","first_name":"Lutz"},{"full_name":"Vollmer, Anna-Lisa","last_name":"Vollmer","first_name":"Anna-Lisa","id":"86589"},{"full_name":"Wang, Yu","last_name":"Wang","first_name":"Yu"},{"first_name":"Annedore","last_name":"Wilmes","full_name":"Wilmes, Annedore"},{"last_name":"Wrede","first_name":"Britta","full_name":"Wrede, Britta"}],"title":"Forms of Understanding for XAI-Explanations","year":"2025","intvolume":" 94","article_type":"original","date_updated":"2025-12-05T15:32:25Z","publication_status":"published","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"main_file_link":[{"url":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1389041725000993?via%3Dihub","open_access":"1"}],"article_number":"101419","doi":"10.1016/j.cogsys.2025.101419","citation":{"apa":"Buschmeier, H., Buhl, H. From the beginning of this research, it was knownthat conceptual metaphors also hide aspects of the target concept; however, this as-pect has been less studied. This study builds upon the idea that the hiding aspect of a specific metaphor should be identified in relation to other metaphors for the same concept. A method is presented to detail this relation based on the theory of semantic frames and the FrameNet resource to identify the hidden aspects and apply it to a corpus of 298 elicited metaphor texts on the target concept of understanding. The analysis revealed that certain conceptual aspects are consistently hidden by a majority of metaphors, pointing to patterns in conceptualization. Using this approach, six aspects frequently hidden by metaphors were identified: Sociality, Transfer, Ownership, Perception, Foundation and Duration."}],"date_created":"2025-12-05T16:41:58Z","department":[{"_id":"424"}],"type":"journal_article"},{"user_id":"71994","editor":[{"full_name":"Scharlau, Ingrid","first_name":"Ingrid","last_name":"Scharlau"},{"full_name":"Bender, Elena","first_name":"Elena","last_name":"Bender"},{"full_name":"Patrzek, Justine","last_name":"Patrzek","first_name":"Justine"},{"full_name":"Schreiber, Christine","first_name":"Christine","last_name":"Schreiber"}],"page":"1-17","language":[{"iso":"ger"}],"_id":"59742","publisher":"Springer Nature","date_updated":"2025-12-08T10:47:59Z","status":"public","title":"Didaktische Überlegungen in der Psychologie","year":"2025","publication_identifier":{"eisbn":["978-3-662-69481-7"],"isbn":["978-3-662-69480-0"]},"author":[{"id":"451","first_name":"Ingrid","orcid":"0000-0003-2364-9489","last_name":"Scharlau","full_name":"Scharlau, Ingrid"},{"full_name":"Jenert, Tobias","first_name":"Tobias","last_name":"Jenert","orcid":" https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9262-5646","id":"71994"}],"type":"book_chapter","department":[{"_id":"424"},{"_id":"208"},{"_id":"640"}],"place":"Berlin","date_created":"2025-04-30T10:39:09Z","publication":"Psychologiedidaktik an allgemeinbildenden und beruflichen Schulen: Ein Lehrbuch mit Unterrichtsmaterialien","citation":{"ieee":"I. Since understanding\r\ndepends on the explainee's background and needs, recent research focused on\r\nco-constructive explanation dialogues, where an explainer continuously monitors\r\nthe explainee's understanding and adapts their explanations dynamically. We\r\ninvestigate the ability of large language models (LLMs) to engage as explainers\r\nin co-constructive explanation dialogues. In particular, we present a user\r\nstudy in which explainees interact with an LLM in two settings, one of which\r\ninvolves the LLM being instructed to explain a topic co-constructively. We\r\nevaluate the explainees' understanding before and after the dialogue, as well\r\nas their perception of the LLMs' co-constructive behavior. Our results suggest\r\nthat LLMs show some co-constructive behaviors, such as asking verification\r\nquestions, that foster the explainees' engagement and can improve understanding\r\nof a topic. We specifically investigated overall attentionalcapacity – that is, the available processing speed – and its distribution, the relativeattentional weight.By reanalyzing a large existing dataset from Tünnermann and Scharlau (2021),we found that across multiple testing days, participants either remained stable within a20 Hz margin or showed consistent improvements in capacity – in some cases triplingtheir initial capacity. The weights in response to salient stimuli were remarkablyconsistent. To determine whether increases in capacity reflect pure test-retest effects or arefacilitated by consolidation between days, and to quantify within-day variability, weconducted a second study in which participants completed five self-administeredsessions within a single day. Capacities remained within the same magnitude and didnot show a consistent directional trend. The relative weights exhibited comparativelylittle variation in most participants, akin to the previously analyzed dataset. Further, estimation uncertainty increased with higher capacity values. These results suggest that capacity may be subject to training effects, but thatsuch improvements appear to depend on longer breaks between sessions. This hasimportant implications for individualized assessment: A personal prior could beestimated from a single session to accelerate future estimations, as long as subsequentsessions occur on the same day. Participants with higher capacities may require tailoredexperimentation methods when small to medium effects are of interest, due to increaseduncertainty.</p>"}],"project":[{"name":"TRR 318; TP A05: Echtzeitmessung der Aufmerksamkeit im Mensch-Roboter-Erklärdialog","_id":"115"}]},{"main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"year":"2024","title":"Effects of task difficulty on visual processing speed","author":[{"id":"38219","full_name":"Banh, Ngoc Chi","last_name":"Banh","orcid":"0000-0002-5946-4542","first_name":"Ngoc Chi"},{"last_name":"Scharlau","first_name":"Ingrid","orcid":"0000-0003-2364-9489","full_name":"Scharlau, Ingrid","id":"451"}],"date_updated":"2024-06-26T08:02:07Z","file":[{"creator":"ncbanh","date_created":"2024-03-27T11:42:20Z","relation":"main_file","date_updated":"2024-03-27T11:42:20Z","file_name":"Banh & Scharlau (2024) - Effects of task difficulty on visual processing speed.pdf","file_size":1237859,"access_level":"closed","file_id":"53070","content_type":"application/pdf","success":1}],"date_created":"2024-03-27T11:43:51Z","type":"conference_abstract","department":[{"_id":"424"},{"_id":"660"}],"_id":"53069","ddc":["150"],"user_id":"38219","status":"public","conference":{"start_date":"2024-03-17","name":"Tagung experimentell arbeitender Psycholog:innen (TeaP)","location":"Regensburg","end_date":"2024-03-20"},"has_accepted_license":"1","oa":"1","file_date_updated":"2024-03-27T11:42:20Z","citation":{"ama":"Banh NC, Scharlau I. While prior work emphasizes the potential of these technologies in various application domains, the process of visual attention in and across the contexts of AR/VR environments is not exhaustively explored yet. By now, visual attention in AR/VR environments has majorly been studied by means of overt attention (i.e. saccadic eye movements), self-report, and process-related visual attention proxies (like reaction time). In this work, we analyze covert visual attention based on the (psychological) Theory of Visual Attention (TVA), which allows us to quantify theory-based interpretable properties of the visual attention process. For example, the TVA allows us to measure the overall processing speed. We instantiate this TVA-based framework with a 30-participant explorative within-subjects study. The results show a decisive difference in visual attention between Reality (i.e. the neutral condition) and Virtual Reality and a weak difference between Reality and Augmented Reality. We discuss the consequences of our findings and provide ideas for future studies."}],"citation":{"ieee":"K. Biermeier, I. Scharlau, and E. However, in certain contexts, repeating negations undergo adaptation, which over time mitigates the effort.\r\nHere, we ask negations hamper visual processing and whether consecutive repetitions mitigate its influence. \r\nWe assessed the overall attentional capacity and its distribution, the relative weight, quantitatively using \r\nthe formal Theory of Visual Attention (TVA).\r\nWe employed a very simple form for negations, binary negations. Negated instructions, expressing the only alternative to the core supposition, were cognitively demanding, resulting in a loss of attentional capacity in three experiments. The overall attentional capacity recovered gradually but stagnated at a lower level than with assertions, even after many repetitions. Additionally, negations distributed the attention equally between target and reference stimulus. Repetitions slightly increased the reference' share of attention. Assertions, on the other hand, shifted the attentional weight towards the target. Few repetitions slightly decreased the bias towards the target, many repetitions increased the bias.","lang":"eng"}]},{"_id":"58109","funded_apc":"1","page":"1474924","volume":3,"user_id":"451","status":"public","oa":"1","citation":{"ama":"Scharlau I, Körber M, Sengupta M, Wachsmuth H. According to many current theories, metaphors have a conceptual function for the understanding of abstract objects. From this theoretical assumption, we derived the hypothesis that the lower the expertise of the addressee of an explanation, the more metaphors should be used. We tested this hypothesis on a relatively natural data set of 24 published videos with close to 100,000 words overall in which experts explain abstract, mostly scientific concepts to persons of different expertise, varying from minimal (children) to profound (expert). Contrary to our expectations, the frequency of metaphors did not decrease with expertise, but actually increased. This increase could be statistically substantiated with higher differences in expertise. The study contributes to a better understanding of the use of metaphors in actual explanatory processes and how metaphor use depends on contextual factors. It thus supports the expansion of the conceptual and linguistic perspective on metaphors to include the aspect of how metaphors are used by speakers."}]}]
