We analyzed WCRF/AICR recommendations in cohorts of European and U.S. adults ages 60 years and above.</jats:p><jats:p>Methods: Individual participant data meta-analysis included 362,114 participants (43% women), from seven prospective cohort studies, free from cancer at enrollment. The WCRF/AICR diet score was based on: (i) energy-dense foods and sugary drinks, (ii) plant foods, (iii) red and processed meat, and (iv) alcoholic drinks. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to examine the association between the diet score and cancer risks. Adjusted, cohort-specific HRs were pooled using random-effects meta-analysis. Risk advancement periods (RAP) were calculated to quantify the time period by which the risk of cancer was postponed among those adhering to the recommendations.</jats:p><jats:p>Results: After a median follow-up of 11 to 15 years across cohorts, 70,877 cancer cases were identified. Each one-point increase in the WCRF/AICR diet score [range, 0 (no) to 4 (complete adherence)] was significantly associated with a lower risk of total cancer [HR, 0.94; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.92–0.97], cancers of the colorectum (HR, 0.84; 95% CI, 0.80–0.89) and prostate (HR, 0.94; 95% CI, 0.92–0.97), but not breast or lung. Adherence to an additional component of the WCRF/AICR diet score significantly postponed the incidence of cancer at any site by 1.6 years (RAP, −1.6; 95% CI, −4.09 to −2.16).</jats:p><jats:p>Conclusions: Adherence to WCRF/AICR dietary recommendations is associated with lower risk of cancer among older adults.</jats:p><jats:p>Impact: Dietary recommendations for cancer prevention are applicable to the elderly. Based on the results of the joint research project simject of the Universities of Paderborn and Kassel, which aims at the development of a demonstrator for simulation-based and logistic-integrated project planning and scheduling, this paper discusses the usage of different approaches for supporting project management of plant engineering projects. After a short introduction and description of the approaches to be compared a wind energy plant as evaluation model as well as the application of the different methods are presented. In this paper we motivate and present the research program of the project flora robotica. Our objective is to develop and to investigate closely linked symbiotic relationships between robots and natural plants and to explore the potentials of a plant-robot society able to produce architectural artifacts and living spaces. These robot-plant bio-hybrids create synergies that allow for new functions of plants and robots. They also create novel design opportunities for an architecture that fuses the design and construction phase. The bio-hybrid is an example of mixed societies between 'hard' artificial and 'wet' natural life, which enables an interaction between natural and artificial ecologies. They form an embodied, self-organizing, and distributed cognitive system which is supposed to grow and develop over long periods of time resulting in the creation of meaningful architectural structures. A key idea is to assign equal roles to robots and plants in order to create a highly integrated, symbiotic system. Gross), which were successfully applied in practice by (Geierhos, 2010) to biographical information extraction in English our project aims to detect, encode, and finally visualize relations between persons. Our corpus consists of the digitised biographical lexicon “Neue Deutsche Biographie (NDB)”, roughly 21.000 biographies in 25 volumes in print since 1953. We developed local grammars and suitable dictionaries to describe interpersonal relations and applied them to the corpus with Unitex 3.1. The local grammars were designed to integrate existing TEI-XML structures in the corpus. Using the ability of local grammars in Unitex to act as transducers we were able to produce XML-Tags and encode semantic information. Based on grammars for personal names and places we described interpersonal relations like to study, predecessors and successors as well as friends and circles. Afterwards we\r\nidentified persons (as given in the authority file or index). Finally we displayed relations on our website in an interactive and dynamic way. These shall be capable of bringing AM into their businesses. The concept furthermore includes approaches for redesigning current available parts and helps to estimate the economic implications of the use of the technology. Design/methodology/approach – The approach starts to discuss general economic aspects for the successful use of AM. While describing the introduction of new technologies into existing businesses, the importance of an appropriate part selection for AM is pointed out. A methodology for a part selection process is presented, and the different criteria are developed. An approach for a redesign of the selected parts, including the gathering of requirements, is given based on different sample parts. A variation of criteria to include measures for product piracy is highlighted. Findings – The methodology has proven applicability in several research and industry projects in aerospace applications. Independent part selections from experts analyzed within a project of the European Space Agency had a 90 per cent overlap with the results. It allows companies with only basic AM knowledge to start a part screening for applicable AM candidates in their own company with a reasonable effort. Originality/value – The methodology for the redesign process helps to identify the main functions of the products targeted and the relevant environment, so one can benefit from the various advantages that AM has to offer. This also enables an uncensored communication and leads to a network owned by a community. Freifunk is such a project and it is based on wireless mesh networks. All participants provide an own wifi router (node) for transferring data between different devices. The routing protocol used in the Freifunk network of Paderborn is called Better Approach To Mobile Ad-hoc Networking advanced (B.A.T.M.A.N. IV or Batman-adv). It uses so called Originator Messages (OGM) to announce the existence of a node and to measure the quality of different links in the network. The Freifunk network in Paderborn consists of about 800 nodes that periodically broadcast OGMs. This leads to a substantial base load of ∼25 GByte per month and node. Instead of performing modifications in the real network, I create a simulation model of the current network structure and implement version IV of the B.A.T.M.A.N. routing protocol. The model is validated by using data from the real network. Based on this model I propose and evaluate five different opportunities to improve the base load without impairing other functionality of the network.
