Following an interactive approach, not only explainers, but also explainees contribute to successful interactions. However, little is known about how explainees actively guide explanation processes and how their involvement relates to learning. We explored the occurrence and type of explainees’ questions in 20 adult — adult explanation dialogues about unknown present and absent objects. Crucially, we related the question types to the explainees’ subsequent recall of the unknown object labels. We found that explainees asked different types of questions, especially about the object’s label and facts. Questions about the object’s function were asked more when objects were present. In addition, requests for labelling were linked to better recall. The results contribute to designing explainable AI that aims to provide relevant and adaptive explanations and to further experimental approaches to study explanations."}],"publication":"Interaction Studies","issue":"2","type":"journal_article","department":[{"_id":"749"}],"date_created":"2025-02-19T09:09:03Z","publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2025-09-02T14:17:44Z","article_type":"original","intvolume":" 25","title":" Explain with, rather than explain to: How explainees shape their own learning","year":"2024","publication_identifier":{"unknown":[" 1572-0373"]},"author":[{"first_name":"Josephine Beryl","orcid":"0000-0002-9997-9241","last_name":"Fisher","full_name":"Fisher, Josephine Beryl","id":"56345"},{"orcid":"0000-0002-5676-8233","last_name":"Rohlfing","first_name":"Katharina J.","full_name":"Rohlfing, Katharina J.","id":"50352"},{"last_name":"Donnellan","first_name":"Ed","full_name":"Donnellan, Ed"},{"full_name":"Grimminger, Angela","last_name":"Grimminger","first_name":"Angela","id":"57578"},{"first_name":"Yan","last_name":"Gu","full_name":"Gu, Yan"},{"last_name":"Vigliocco","first_name":"Gabriella","full_name":"Vigliocco, Gabriella"}],"doi":"doi.org/10.1075/is.23019.fis","main_file_link":[{"url":"https://www.jbe-platform.com/content/journals/10.1075/is.23019.fis"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}]},{"type":"journal_article","keyword":["Artificial Intelligence","Computer Science Applications"],"date_created":"2023-12-07T09:17:09Z","file":[{"date_created":"2023-12-07T09:18:55Z","creator":"angross","file_id":"49517","success":1,"content_type":"application/pdf","file_name":"frobt-10-1245501.pdf","file_size":40679118,"access_level":"closed","relation":"main_file","date_updated":"2023-12-07T09:18:55Z"}],"abstract":[{"text":"
In this article, we present RISE—a Robotics Integration and Scenario-Management Extensible-Architecture—for designing human–robot dialogs and conducting Human–Robot Interaction (HRI) studies. In current HRI research, interdisciplinarity in the creation and implementation of interaction studies is becoming increasingly important. In addition, there is a lack of reproducibility of the research results. With the presented open-source architecture, we aim to address these two topics. Therefore, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various existing tools from different sub-fields within robotics. Requirements for an architecture can be derived from this overview of the literature, which 1) supports interdisciplinary research, 2) allows reproducibility of the research, and 3) is accessible to other researchers in the field of HRI. With our architecture, we tackle these requirements by providing a Graphical User Interface which explains the robot behavior and allows introspection into the current state of the dialog. Additionally, it offers controlling possibilities to easily conduct Wizard of Oz studies. To achieve transparency, the dialog is modeled explicitly, and the robot behavior can be configured. Furthermore, the modular architecture offers an interface for external features and sensors and is expandable to new robots and modalities.
","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Frontiers in Robotics and AI","doi":"10.3389/frobt.2023.1245501","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"intvolume":" 10","article_type":"original","date_updated":"2023-12-07T12:09:41Z","publication_status":"published","author":[{"full_name":"Groß, André","last_name":"Groß","first_name":"André"},{"full_name":"Schütze, Christian","last_name":"Schütze","first_name":"Christian"},{"first_name":"Mara","last_name":"Brandt","full_name":"Brandt, Mara"},{"full_name":"Wrede, Britta","first_name":"Britta","last_name":"Wrede"},{"first_name":"Birte","last_name":"Richter","full_name":"Richter, Birte"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["2296-9144"]},"year":"2023","title":"RISE: an open-source architecture for interdisciplinary and reproducible human–robot interaction research","project":[{"_id":"109","grant_number":"438445824","name":"TRR 318: TRR 318 - Erklärbarkeit konstruieren"},{"_id":"113","name":"TRR 318 - A3: TRR 318 - Subproject A3"},{"_id":"115","grant_number":"438445824","name":"TRR 318 - A05: TRR 318 - Echtzeitmessung der Aufmerksamkeit im Mensch-Roboter-Erklärdialog (Teilprojekt A05)"}],"citation":{"apa":"Groß, A., Schütze, C., Brandt, M., Wrede, B., &#38; Richter, B. We are interested in dynamic scenarios where data is sampled progressively, and learning is done in an incremental rather than a batch mode. We seek efficient incremental algorithms for computing feature importance (FI). Permutation feature importance (PFI) is a well-established model-agnostic measure to obtain global FI based on feature marginalization of absent features. We propose an efficient, model-agnostic algorithm called iPFI to estimate this measure incrementally and under dynamic modeling conditions including concept drift. We prove theoretical guarantees on the approximation quality in terms of expectation and variance. To validate our theoretical findings and the efficacy of our approaches in incremental scenarios dealing with streaming data rather than traditional batch settings, we conduct multiple experimental studies on benchmark data with and without concept drift.
","lang":"eng"}],"date_created":"2024-01-05T21:52:28Z","department":[{"_id":"660"}],"keyword":["Artificial Intelligence","Software"],"type":"journal_article","author":[{"full_name":"Fumagalli, Fabian","first_name":"Fabian","last_name":"Fumagalli"},{"full_name":"Muschalik, Maximilian","last_name":"Muschalik","first_name":"Maximilian"},{"last_name":"Hüllermeier","first_name":"Eyke","full_name":"Hüllermeier, Eyke"},{"last_name":"Hammer","first_name":"Barbara","full_name":"Hammer, Barbara"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["0885-6125","1573-0565"]},"title":"Incremental permutation feature importance (iPFI): towards online explanations on data streams","year":"2023","intvolume":" 112","publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2025-01-16T16:20:12Z","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"10.1007/s10994-023-06385-y","citation":{"mla":"Fumagalli, Fabian, et al. “Incremental Permutation Feature Importance (IPFI): Towards Online Explanations on Data Streams.” <i>Machine Learning</i>, vol. 112, no. 12, Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2023, pp. 4863–903, doi:<a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1007/s10994-023-06385-y\">10.1007/s10994-023-06385-y</a>.","bibtex":"@article{Fumagalli_Muschalik_Hüllermeier_Hammer_2023, title={Incremental permutation feature importance (iPFI): towards online explanations on data streams}, volume={112}, DOI={<a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1007/s10994-023-06385-y\">10.1007/s10994-023-06385-y</a>}, number={12}, journal={Machine Learning}, publisher={Springer Science and Business Media LLC}, author={Fumagalli, Fabian and Muschalik, Maximilian and Hüllermeier, Eyke and Hammer, Barbara}, year={2023}, pages={4863–4903} }","ama":"Fumagalli F, Muschalik M, Hüllermeier E, Hammer B. This trend has moved beyond the realm of commerce and has become a matter of public governance, where systems for citizen risk scoring, predictive policing, and social credit scores proliferate. What these systems have in common is that they may target the person and her ethical and political dispositions, her virtues. Virtue ethics is the most appropriate approach for evaluating the impacts of these new systems, which has translated in a revival of talk about virtue in technology ethics. Yet, the focus on individual dispositions has rightly been criticized for lacking a concern with the political collective and institutional structures. This paper advocates a new direction of research into civic virtue, which is situated in between personal dispositions and structures of governance. First, it surveys the discourse on virtue ethics of technology, emphasizing its neglect of the political dimension of impacts of emerging technologies. Second, it presents a pluralist conception of civic virtue that enables us to scrutinize the impact of technology on civic virtue on three different levels of reciprocal reputation building, the cultivation of internal goods, and excellence in the public sphere. Third, it illustrates the benefits of this conceptions by discussing some paradigmatic examples of emerging technologies that aim to cultivate civic virtue.
"}],"issue":"4","publication":"Philosophy & Technology","type":"journal_article","keyword":["History and Philosophy of Science","Philosophy"],"department":[{"_id":"11"}],"date_created":"2023-11-03T13:36:40Z"},{"publication_identifier":{"issn":["0933-1875","1610-1987"]},"author":[{"first_name":"Maximilian","last_name":"Muschalik","full_name":"Muschalik, Maximilian"},{"id":"93420","first_name":"Fabian","last_name":"Fumagalli","full_name":"Fumagalli, Fabian"},{"full_name":"Hammer, Barbara","first_name":"Barbara","last_name":"Hammer"},{"first_name":"Eyke","last_name":"Huellermeier","full_name":"Huellermeier, Eyke","id":"48129"}],"title":"Agnostic Explanation of Model Change based on Feature Importance","year":"2022","intvolume":" 36","date_updated":"2025-01-16T16:19:35Z","publication_status":"published","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"10.1007/s13218-022-00766-6","issue":"3-4","publication":"KI - Künstliche Intelligenz","abstract":[{"text":"Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) has mainly focused on static learning tasks so far. In this paper, we consider XAI in the context of online learning in dynamic environments, such as learning from real-time data streams, where models are learned incrementally and continuously adapted over the course of time. More specifically, we motivate the problem of explaining model change, i.e. explaining the difference between models before and after adaptation, instead of the models themselves. In this regard, we provide the first efficient model-agnostic approach to dynamically detecting, quantifying, and explaining significant model changes. Our approach is based on an adaptation of the well-known Permutation Feature Importance (PFI) measure. It includes two hyperparameters that control the sensitivity and directly influence explanation frequency, so that a human user can adjust the method to individual requirements and application needs. We assess and validate our method’s efficacy on illustrative synthetic data streams with three popular model classes.","lang":"eng"}],"date_created":"2023-11-10T14:21:06Z","department":[{"_id":"660"}],"keyword":["Artificial Intelligence"],"type":"journal_article","status":"public","_id":"48780","publisher":"Springer Science and Business Media LLC","page":"211-224","volume":36,"user_id":"93420","citation":{"ieee":"M. In this paper, we argue that a novel conceptual framework is needed to overcome shortcomings of existing AI systems with little attention to processes of interaction and learning. Drawing from research in interaction and development, we first outline the novel conceptual framework that pushes the design of AI systems toward true interactivity with an emphasis on the role of the partner and social relevance. We propose that AI systems will be able to provide a meaningful and relevant explanation only if the process of explaining is extended to active contribution of both partners that brings about dynamics that is modulated by different levels of analysis. Accordingly, our conceptual framework comprises monitoring and scaffolding as key concepts and claims that the process of explaining is not only modulated by the interaction between explainee and explainer but is embedded into a larger social context in which conventionalized and routinized behaviors are established. We discuss our conceptual framework in relation to the established objectives of transparency and autonomy that are raised for the design of explainable AI systems currently.","lang":"eng"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"10.1109/tcds.2020.3044366","year":"2021","title":"Explanation as a Social Practice: Toward a Conceptual Framework for the Social Design of AI Systems","publication_identifier":{"issn":["2379-8920","2379-8939"]},"author":[{"id":"50352","full_name":"Rohlfing, Katharina J.","last_name":"Rohlfing","first_name":"Katharina J."},{"full_name":"Cimiano, Philipp","last_name":"Cimiano","first_name":"Philipp"},{"orcid":"0000-0003-2364-9489","last_name":"Scharlau","first_name":"Ingrid","full_name":"Scharlau, Ingrid","id":"451"},{"full_name":"Matzner, Tobias","first_name":"Tobias","last_name":"Matzner","id":"65695"},{"id":"27152","full_name":"Buhl, Heike M.","last_name":"Buhl","first_name":"Heike M."},{"full_name":"Buschmeier, Hendrik","first_name":"Hendrik","last_name":"Buschmeier"},{"full_name":"Esposito, Elena","first_name":"Elena","last_name":"Esposito"},{"id":"57578","last_name":"Grimminger","first_name":"Angela","full_name":"Grimminger, Angela"},{"full_name":"Hammer, Barbara","first_name":"Barbara","last_name":"Hammer"},{"id":"242","full_name":"Haeb-Umbach, Reinhold","first_name":"Reinhold","last_name":"Haeb-Umbach"},{"first_name":"Ilona","last_name":"Horwath","full_name":"Horwath, Ilona","id":"68836"},{"full_name":"Hüllermeier, Eyke","last_name":"Hüllermeier","first_name":"Eyke","id":"48129"},{"last_name":"Kern","first_name":"Friederike","full_name":"Kern, Friederike"},{"first_name":"Stefan","last_name":"Kopp","full_name":"Kopp, Stefan"},{"id":"72497","full_name":"Thommes, Kirsten","last_name":"Thommes","first_name":"Kirsten"},{"full_name":"Ngonga Ngomo, Axel-Cyrille","last_name":"Ngonga Ngomo","first_name":"Axel-Cyrille","id":"65716"},{"id":"60311","full_name":"Schulte, Carsten","first_name":"Carsten","last_name":"Schulte"},{"id":"3900","last_name":"Wachsmuth","first_name":"Henning","full_name":"Wachsmuth, Henning"},{"full_name":"Wagner, Petra","first_name":"Petra","last_name":"Wagner"},{"first_name":"Britta","last_name":"Wrede","full_name":"Wrede, Britta"}],"date_updated":"2023-12-05T10:15:02Z","publication_status":"published","intvolume":" 13","article_type":"original","oa":"1","file_date_updated":"2023-11-20T16:33:51Z","citation":{"bibtex":"@article{Rohlfing_Cimiano_Scharlau_Matzner_Buhl_Buschmeier_Esposito_Grimminger_Hammer_Haeb-Umbach_et al._2021, title={Explanation as a Social Practice: Toward a Conceptual Framework for the Social Design of AI Systems}, volume={13}, DOI={<a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1109/tcds.2020.3044366\">10.1109/tcds.2020.3044366</a>}, number={3}, journal={IEEE Transactions on Cognitive and Developmental Systems}, author={Rohlfing, Katharina J. and Cimiano, Philipp and Scharlau, Ingrid and Matzner, Tobias and Buhl, Heike M. and Buschmeier, Hendrik and Esposito, Elena and Grimminger, Angela and Hammer, Barbara and Haeb-Umbach, Reinhold and et al.}, year={2021}, pages={717–728} }","ama":"Rohlfing KJ, Cimiano P, Scharlau I, et al.
