abstract = {{The state of the art shows that PBF-LB/M offers great potential for pressure-loaded parts, with significant weight reductions and simultaneous optimization of flow resistance. This study is aimed at applying existing calculation methods for pressure-loaded parts to additively manufactured pipe structures, considering the two materials EN AC-43000 (3.2381, AlSi10Mg) and AISI 316L (1.4404, X2CrNiMo17-12-2). For this purpose, systematic tensile tests are carried out for both materials. In addition, a statistical evaluation is performed to determine the design-relevant strength characteristics with a survival probability Ps of 97.5 % for both materials in the as-built and heat-treated condition.
Pipe specimens are manufactured, half of which are heat treated, geometrically measured and then subjected to a burst pressure test to experimentally determine the failure-critical internal pressure. These results are compared with calculated burst pressures. The calculations are based on the application-relevant methods identified in this study, considering the strength values determined for the respective material condition. This comparison is used to assess the suitability of the calculation methods for additively manufactured pipe structures, based on the materials investigated.}},

  abstract     = {{
Clinched joints with non-rotationally symmetric geometries exhibit orientation-dependent mechanical behavior that is commonly neglected in structural-scale simulations. Reuleaux triangle shaped clinched joints, in particular, show pronounced in-plane anisotropy depending on their orientation. While such effects have been studied at joint and specimen scale, their relevance at the structural level remains largely unexplored. In this work, the influence of joint orientation on the bending response of a joined structure is investigated using numerical simulations. A simplified joint replacement model based on the *CONSTRAINED_SPR2 point-connector formulation in LS-DYNA is employed, with parameters calibrated from previously obtained experimental force displacement data. A hat shaped profile structure subjected to three-point bending is analyzed in a parametric study considering variations in joint orientation, joint spacing, and profile geometry. The results show that joint orientation has little influence during the initial deformation phase but becomes increasingly significant at larger displacements, where joint behavior governs load transfer. Orientation dependent effects are found to influence the global force displacement response and local load redistribution among joints, with magnitudes comparable to those induced by changes in joint spacing and structural geometry. The findings confirm that joint orientation effects remain relevant at the structural level and should be considered in the design of structures assembled using non-rotationally symmetric clinched joints.
}},

abstract = {{Laser Powder Bed Fusion (PBF-LB/M) enables significant performance enhancements in tool and mold making via the integration of complex, conformal cooling channels. However, high manufacturing costs of monolithic components and material-specific defect susceptibility still hinder widespread industrial adoption. Within the collaborative project WerKo3D, the scaling, process qualification, and structural design of the novel tool steel Printium 13 were successfully investigated to lower market entry barriers for additive tooling applications. An industrial batch of 50 kg of Printium 13 powder was produced via vacuum inert gas atomization and thoroughly characterized. Utilizing a Design of Experiments (DoE) approach on an SLM 280 system, an optimized process window was established, yielding a relative density of about 99.99%. Subsequent heat treatment parameterizations revealed a superior mechanical property profile combining high hardness with enhanced impact toughness compared to conventional AISI H13 tool steel, alongside ultimate tensile strengths up to 1,600 MPa. To reduce build times and material consumption, a segmented shell-core tool design was conceptualized and numerically optimized via coupled CFD and FEM simulations. The functional demonstrator - a sprue insert for aluminum die casting - was additively manufactured without cracking, heat-treated, and finish-machined to final dimensions. Furthermore, a two-day training and knowledge-transfer program was realized to disseminate design guidelines to industry stakeholders. The findings validate the complete process chain from powder atomization to crack-free hybrid tool manufacturing.}},

In diesem Beitrag wird eine Methode vorgestellt, welche neben der Einführung neuartiger Mobilitätsdienste auch die Entwicklung eines nachhaltigen Mobilitäts-Ökosystems anstrebt. abstract = {{Fibre-reinforced polymers are increasingly used due to their high specific strength, making them suitable for local sheet metal reinforcement. This allows improved overall mechanical properties with reduced wall thickness of the sheet metal part and, thus, lower weight of the components. One of the main focuses of research into such hybrid structures is on the adhesive properties and the respective failure behaviour of the interfaces. Generally, the failure behaviour under the influence of mechanical loads can be divided into adhesive, cohesive and mixed-mode failure. The correlation between observed failure behaviour and adhesion properties of the hybrid composite materials is analysed in detail in this work. The hybrid composite consists of an aluminium sheet of the alloy EN AW‑6082 T6 and thermoset carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) prepreg. The aluminium sheet was laser pretreated before hybrid production to improve the adhesion properties. The specimens studied were produced by the prepreg pressing process, in which the components are cured and joined simultaneously. The influences of the thickness of the CFRP part, the layup, the fibre orientation at the boundary layer, and the laser pretreatment parameters on the properties of the hybrid joints were investigated.}},

Accurate Finite Element Modeling (FEM) of joints is essential in the design of complex mechanical systems such as automotive body-in-white (BIW) structures, as it plays a critical role in evaluating their performance. Although well-established techniques exist for modeling rotationally symmetric joints, there remains a significant gap in effectively modeling non-rotationally symmetric joints. These joints are particularly relevant in the automotive BIW, where they can better accommodate anisotropic loading conditions. In this study, strategies for modeling non-rotationally symmetric joints were explored using finite element simulations in LS-DYNA. The findings demonstrate that discrete beam elements can capture the anisotropic characteristics of such joints. Two models were tested: a single-beam model for stiffness periodicity every 90°, and a three-beam model for stiffness periodicity every 120°. Force responses, stress distribution, and sheet bending behaviors were analyzed, confirming that discrete beam elements can accurately represent direction-dependent stiffness. These results establish a foundation for developing advanced joint modeling strategies in complex mechanical systems.
}},

abstract = {{To reduce transport-related environmental impacts, innovative mobility system approaches such as on-demand services are being developed. These can include operating vehicles that differ regarding their characteristics and application profile from privately owned cars in motorized individual transport. Studies on life cycle assessment and life cycle engineering of vehicle lightweight structures are mainly limited to these privately owned cars and the impact category of climate change. In this paper, a method for life cycle assessment-based engineering of lightweight structures in vehicles for various mobility system applications, including on-demand mobility services, is developed. The method enables the holistic life cycle assessment of lightweight structures in different mobility system applications considering parameter changes at the upstream products, component, subsystem, vehicle and mobility system levels, as well as the integration of results into engineering activities. A case study is used to show that the vehicle and mobility system application of lightweight structures can significantly influence their environmental impacts and the selection of ecologically preferable product designs. The application in vehicles for on-demand mobility services can lead to an increase in absolute use stage energy demand and environmental impacts compared to applications in privately owned vehicles for motorized individual transport. However, normalized to the transport performance provided, the lifecycle environmental impacts of structural components in vehicles for on-demand mobility services can be lower than in vehicles for motorized individual transport. The paper contributes methodically and with quantitative results to improved decision making in life cycle engineering activities for lightweight structures in mobility system applications.}},

The focus is on understanding how changes in the alignment of individual joints affect the distribution of load, neighboring joints, and the overall performance of the component. Lap shear specimens with multiple joints arranged in a line are analyzed to explore these effects. Simplified models are used to model the joints in finite element simulations, allowing for efficient yet accurate analysis of the load distribution and structural response under varying joint orientations. Variations in joint orientation result in measurable changes in the distribution of forces on adjacent joints, influencing their behavior and that of the overall assembly. Experimental validation confirms the numerical results, providing deeper insights into the interaction between individual joints and their surroundings. abstract = {{Over the past decades, the importance of lightweight structures in the aircraft and automotive industries has steadily increased due to regulations aimed at reducing global warming. Work hardened steel alloys are commonly used for lightweight applications, but they face stability issues when the material thickness reaches certain thresholds. Fiber Reinforced Plastics (FRP) offer a viable alternative due to their high strength-to-weight ratio, but they are often expensive due to long production cycles and high material costs. A feasible solution lies in hybrid lightweight designs that utilize expensive FRP materials only in highly stressed areas, achieving a balance between low mass and acceptable cost. These hybrid structures are lighter than metal components and more cost-effective compared to fully FRP structures, without compromising mechanical properties. This study focuses on producing rotationally symmetrical hybrid structures using Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) combined with vacuum assistance in a single-stage process. The research examines the effects of injection pressure, mold temperature, and the interface between metal and FRP. The mechanical characterization of these hybrid structures was conducted to assess their performance under torsion, compression, and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) loading conditions. The results indicate that hybrid designs can offer a lightweight alternative without compromising mechanical properties.}},
