Among other domains, deep learning is used in real-estate appraisal, where it allows to extend the analysis from hard facts only (e.g., size, age) to also consider more implicit information about the location or appearance of houses in the form of image data. However, one downside of deep learning models is their intransparent mechanic of decision making, which leads to a trade-off between accuracy and interpretability. This limits their applicability for tasks where a justification of the decision is necessary. Therefore, in this paper, we first combine different perspectives on interpretability into a multi-dimensional framework for a socio-technical perspective on explainable artificial intelligence. Second, we measure the performance gains of using multi-view deep learning which leverages additional image data (satellite images) for real estate appraisal. Third, we propose and test a novel post-hoc explainability method called Grad-Ram. This modified version of Grad-Cam mitigates the intransparency of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for predicting continuous outcome variables. With this, we try to reduce the accuracy-interpretability trade-off of multi-view deep learning models. Our proposed network architecture outperforms traditional hedonic regression models by 34% in terms of MAE. Furthermore, we find that the used satellite images are the second most important predictor after square feet in our model and that the network learns interpretable patterns about the neighborhood structure and density."}],"_id":"35620","publisher":"Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)","user_id":"77066","status":"public","citation":{"bibtex":"@article{Kucklick_Müller_2022, title={Tackling the Accuracy–Interpretability Trade-off: Interpretable Deep Learning Models for Satellite Image-based Real Estate Appraisal}, DOI={10.1145/3567430}, journal={ACM Transactions on Management Information Systems}, publisher={Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)}, author={Kucklick, Jan-Peter and Müller, Oliver}, year={2022} }","ama":"Kucklick J-P, Müller O. Based on automated text mining and unsupervised machine learning, we collect, analyze, and interpret the IS discipline’s comprehensive research on platforms—comprising 11,049 papers spanning 44 years of research activity. From a cluster analysis concerning platform concepts’ semantically most similar words, we identify six research streams on platforms, each with their own platform terms. Based on interpreting the identified concepts vis-à-vis the extant research and considering a temporal perspective on the concepts’ application, we present a lexicon of platform concepts, to guide further research on platforms in the IS discipline. Researchers and managers can build on our results to position their work appropriately, applying a specific theoretical perspective on platforms in isolation or combining multiple perspectives to study platform phenomena at a more abstract level.
"}],"issue":"1","publication":"Electronic Markets","type":"journal_article","keyword":["Management of Technology and Innovation","Marketing","Computer Science Applications","Economics and Econometrics","Business and International Management"],"department":[{"_id":"526"}],"date_created":"2023-01-10T10:10:17Z","status":"public","user_id":"21671","volume":32,"page":"375-396","_id":"35740","publisher":"Springer Science and Business Media LLC","citation":{"chicago":"Bartelheimer, Christian, Philipp zur Heiden, Hedda Lüttenberg, and Daniel Beverungen. “Systematizing the Lexicon of Platforms in Information Systems: A Data-Driven Study.” Electronic Markets 32, no. 1 (2022): 375–96. https://doi.org/10.1007/s12525-022-00530-6.","short":"C. Through the lens of systems theory, this study examines how the degree to which IT is embedded in a firm's strategy and day‐to‐day business processes is associated with the firm's social and environmental value creation. Using a broad international dataset, we find strong evidence that our measure of IT is positively related to a firm's sustainability performance (SP), which we use to operationalize social and environmental value creation (or erosion). Our results also reveal that the increase in a firm's SP might come at the cost of a short‐term decrease in financial performance (FP). We find no indication, however, that IT induces a trade‐off between SP and long‐term FP. Integrated thinking appears to stipulate long‐term financial value creation instead. We further explore moderating factors within the organizational and institutional context of our sample firms and highlight implications for society, corporate practice, and policymaking.
","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Business Strategy and the Environment","issue":"1","doi":"10.1002/bse.3131","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"intvolume":" 32","publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2023-10-30T11:34:56Z","publication_identifier":{"issn":["0964-4733","1099-0836"]},"author":[{"full_name":"Reimsbach, Daniel","last_name":"Reimsbach","first_name":"Daniel","id":"100169"},{"last_name":"Braam","first_name":"Geert","full_name":"Braam, Geert"}],"title":"Creating social and environmental value through integrated thinking: International evidence","year":"2022"},{"user_id":"36049","volume":25,"_id":"35992","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"date_updated":"2023-11-17T10:26:36Z","publication_status":"inpress","intvolume":" 25","article_type":"original","title":"Semiparametric GARCH models with long memory applied to Value at Risk and Expected Shortfall","year":"2022","status":"public","author":[{"id":"23991","full_name":"Letmathe, Sebastian","last_name":"Letmathe","first_name":"Sebastian"},{"id":"20760","full_name":"Feng, Yuanhua","first_name":"Yuanhua","last_name":"Feng"},{"last_name":"Uhde","first_name":"André","full_name":"Uhde, André","id":"36049"}],"type":"journal_article","keyword":["long memory","generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (GARCH) models","value-at-risk (VaR)","expected shortfall (ES)","traffic-light test","backtesting"],"department":[{"_id":"186"},{"_id":"188"}],"date_created":"2023-01-11T10:50:27Z","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"In this paper new semiparametric generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (GARCH) models with long memory are introduced. A multiplicative decomposition of the volatility into a conditional component and an unconditional component is assumed. The estimation of the latter is carried out by means of a data-driven local polynomial smoother. According to the revised recommendations by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision to measure market risk in the banks’ trading books, these new semiparametric GARCH models are applied to obtain rolling one-step ahead forecasts for the value-at-risk and expected shortfall (ES) for market risk assets. Standard regulatory traffic-light tests and a newly introduced traffic-light test for the ES are carried out for all models. In addition, model performance is assessed via a recently introduced model selection criterion. The practical relevance of our proposal is demonstrated by a comparative study. Our results indicate that semiparametric long-memory GARCH models are a meaningful substitute for their conventional, parametric counterparts. For this purpose, we compare the effect of a sudden shock (dissolution of the Soviet Union) on the managers' present perceptions to that of a steady transition (EU accession). We consult the 5th round of the Business Environment and Enterprise Performance Survey from 2012 to 2014 analyzing 4715 interviews with managers of organizations from twelve Central and Eastern European countries. Our results reveal striking differences in the present perception of corruption for organizations founded immediately before and immediately after these institutional transitions. The study's results contribute to the research on imprinting theory regarding the relationship between organizations and institutional conditions that constitutes a lasting effect on organizational structures. Thus, applying an institutional perspective that considers less stable periods for organizations yields a promising avenue in research on organizational behavior.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Business Ethics, the Environment & Responsibility","issue":"2","doi":"10.1111/beer.12506","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/beer.12506"}],"article_type":"original","intvolume":" 32","publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2023-11-23T08:10:48Z","author":[{"id":"49071","full_name":"Auer, Thorsten Fabian","last_name":"Auer","first_name":"Thorsten Fabian"},{"id":"33333","last_name":"Knorr","first_name":"Karin","full_name":"Knorr, Karin"},{"id":"72497","full_name":"Thommes, Kirsten","last_name":"Thommes","first_name":"Kirsten"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["2694-6416"],"eissn":["2694-6424"]},"title":"Long‐term effects of institutional conditions on perceived corruption – A study on organizational imprinting in post‐communist countries","year":"2022"},{"oa":"1","quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"mla":"Auer, Thorsten Fabian. Despite a wide-ranging debate on the use of learning objectives, empirical research on their effectiveness is scarce. The present study uses the features of digital teaching platforms to investigate the perception and effectiveness of learning objectives applying a randomised controlled experiment followed by a survey in a course for undergraduate economics students (N = 30). Controlling group preconditions and the treatment effect allows to draw conclusions about the different learning outcomes of the student groups. The specification of behaviour-oriented learning objectives in the online course system leads to significantly better performance in the treatment group. A stronger perception of the learning objectives in the treatment group supports this effect that remains significant in a regression analysis. Thus, the study provides an empirical justification to integrate learning objectives in university teaching."}],"issue":"1","publication":"die hochschullehre","doi":"http://doi.org/10.3278/HSL2248W","language":[{"iso":"ger"}],"main_file_link":[{"url":"https://die-hochschullehre.de/articles/abstract/10.3278/HSL2248W/#downloads","open_access":"1"}],"article_type":"original","intvolume":" 8","publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2023-11-23T08:06:46Z","author":[{"id":"49071","last_name":"Auer","first_name":"Thorsten Fabian","full_name":"Auer, Thorsten Fabian"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["2199-8825"]},"year":"2022","title":"Die Wirksamkeit von Lernzielen für Studienleistungen – eine experimentelle Studie"},{"user_id":"44648","doi":"10.1109/ETFA52439.2022.9921520","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"_id":"33957","series_title":"2022 IEEE 27th International Conference on Emerging Technologies and Factory Automation (ETFA)","date_updated":"2023-11-23T08:07:51Z","author":[{"last_name":"Deppe","first_name":"Sahar","full_name":"Deppe, Sahar"},{"full_name":"Brandt, Lukas","first_name":"Lukas","last_name":"Brandt"},{"full_name":"Brünninghaus, Marc","last_name":"Brünninghaus","first_name":"Marc"},{"last_name":"Papenkordt","first_name":"Jörg","full_name":"Papenkordt, Jörg","id":"44648"},{"id":"11871","last_name":"Heindorf","first_name":"Stefan","orcid":"0000-0002-4525-6865","full_name":"Heindorf, Stefan"},{"first_name":"Gudrun","last_name":"Tschirner-Vinke","full_name":"Tschirner-Vinke, Gudrun"}],"conference":{"name":"ETFA","start_date":"2022-09-06","location":"Stuttgart","end_date":"2022-09-09"},"year":"2022","title":"AI-Based Assistance System for Manufacturing","status":"public","department":[{"_id":"178"},{"_id":"574"},{"_id":"184"}],"type":"conference","keyword":["Assistance system","Knowledge graph","Information retrieval","Neural networks","AR"],"date_created":"2022-10-28T11:43:49Z","project":[{"grant_number":"02L19C115","_id":"409","name":"KIAM: KIAM: Kompetenzzentrum KI in der Arbeitswelt des industriellen Mittelstands in OstWestfalenLippe"}],"abstract":[{"text":"Manufacturing companies are challenged to make the increasingly complex work processes equally manageable for all employees to prevent an impending loss of competence. Embedded in a zeitgeist that favors sustainability, this outlook would suggest high integrated reporting adoption rates among reporting organizations. Our analysis of integrated reporting in Germany from 2008 to 2019 shows, however, that organizations approached integrated reporting with a wait-and-see mentality. This approach cannot be described adequately by the existing conceptualizations of (partial) practice adoption. We therefore develop the notion of wait-and-see-ism, defined as the deliberate and potentially long-lasting postponement of a decision to adopt a practice while its further development is monitored silently. We see limited, though continuous, efforts to prepare for the prospect of adopting the practice of integrated reporting quickly at a later stage. Wait-and-see-ism expands on prior work on partial adoption by emphasizing its temporal dimension. This adds an important yet undertheorized option that organizations can employ to respond to ambiguous institutional demands, thus explaining the stalling of promising management practices.
"}],"page":"566-595","_id":"47923","publisher":"SAGE Publications","user_id":"21810","volume":21,"status":"public","citation":{"chicago":"Endenich, Christoph, Rüdiger Hahn, Daniel Reimsbach, and Christopher Wickert. “Wait-and-See-Ism as Partial Adoption of Management Practices: The Rise and Stall of Integrated Reporting.” Strategic Organization 21, no. 3 (2022): 566–95. https://doi.org/10.1177/14761270221078605.","short":"C.
