In today’s dynamic environments—shaped by digital transformation,\r\nevolving provider–user interactions, and shifting societal demands—these approaches face limitations in enabling continuous, context-sensitive innovation. Continuous Value Shaping emerges as a conceptual extension to service systems engineering, promoting more adaptive and co-evolutionary forms of service system development. This study examines how Continuous Value Shaping manifests through a multiple case study of three public sector projects. We identify distinct manifestations and constellations of the concept’s principles that complement classical\r\nSSE practices. As the first empirical exploration of Continuous Value Shaping, the study refines its\r\nconceptual foundation and enhances its accessibility for researchers and practitioners. We conclude with seven empirically derived propositions that inform future service systems engineering initiatives and demonstrate how Continuous Value Shaping supports the dynamic alignment of service systems with societal and systemic demands.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Proceedings of the 59th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS 2026)","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"date_updated":"2026-02-05T06:57:02Z","publication_status":"published","author":[{"id":"74374","full_name":"Schäfer, Jannika Marie","first_name":"Jannika Marie","last_name":"Schäfer"},{"full_name":"Rajko, Polina","first_name":"Polina","last_name":"Rajko"},{"full_name":"Angelova, Daniela","last_name":"Angelova","first_name":"Daniela"},{"first_name":"Tilo","last_name":"Böhmann","full_name":"Böhmann, Tilo"}],"title":"From Engineering to Shaping: A Multiple Case Study on Advancing Service Systems Engineering through Continuous Value Shaping","year":"2026"},{"project":[{"_id":"160","name":"DatenraumKultur: Use Case 1 - Kulturplattformen - Datenraum Kultur"}],"citation":{"chicago":"Heiden, Philipp zur, Haya Halimeh, Philipp Hansmeier, Christian Vorbohle, Maike Althaus, Daniel Beverungen, Dennis Kundisch, and Oliver Müller. “Data Spaces for Heterogeneous Data Ecosystems – Findings from a Design Study in the Cultural Sector.” Communications of the Association for Information Systems, n.d.","short":"P. zur Heiden, H. Systems theory offers powerful concepts to address challenges of growing system complexity and non-systemic design approaches in information systems. Despite its systemic origins, systems theory remains a peripheral topic in IS. The study addresses this gap by introducing a comprehensive framework of 52 systems-theoretical concepts to guide the design of complex IS artifacts. We synthesize scattered systems knowledge from diverse disciplines to provide a unified level of abstraction for complex information system design. We apply the framework to a use case of business reputation systems to show how the systems lens informs the design of a novel, complex information system. We make three key contributions to the literature. First, the framework provides a common ground for interdisciplinary research in information system design. Second, it offers a unified level of abstraction grounded in systems theory that serves as a coherent basis for artifact design. Third, it demonstrates the potential of systems theory as a foundational justificatory knowledge base. Furthermore, we provide guidance on applying the framework across multiple modes of reasoning, alongside further application guidelines. The study thus serves as a bridge between the body of systems knowledge and contextual design in IS."}],"publication":"Communication of the Association for Information Systems","type":"journal_article","keyword":["Information Systems Research","Systems Theory","System Complexity","System Design","Design Science"],"department":[{"_id":"195"}],"date_created":"2026-04-02T04:19:09Z","publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2026-04-02T04:32:05Z","article_type":"review","title":"Bridging Systems Theory and Information Systems: A Framework for Designing Complex Information Systems","year":"2026","publication_identifier":{"unknown":["1529-3181"]},"author":[{"first_name":"Ulvi","last_name":"Ibrahimli","full_name":"Ibrahimli, Ulvi"},{"first_name":"Simon","last_name":"Hemmrich","full_name":"Hemmrich, Simon"},{"last_name":"Winkelmann","first_name":"Axel","full_name":"Winkelmann, Axel"}],"doi":"https://aisel.aisnet.org/cais/vol58/iss1/37/","alternative_title":["Design Your System"],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}]},{"extern":"1","abstract":[{"text":"Trust between client and consultant is perhaps the most important asset in con-sulting, as this is a highly intangible knowledge-intensive business that concerns is-sues of outstanding strategic and operational importance for the customers. Cli-ents who have not worked with a particular consultancy face considerable risk when they place an order while lacking reliable information about the service quality they can expect. There is a strong link between trust and reputation, as the positive reputation of a consultancy can act as a substitute for a new client’s missing individual experience with the provider, fostering trust in the service quali-ty. Thus, creating, maintaining, and demonstrating a good reputation is of signifi-cant importance for consultancies in a very competitive industry.\r\nTo facilitate trustworthy signals, we design and implement a novel reputation mechanism that carries a monetary weight stored on a blockchain network as an immutable, decentralized, and transparent ledger. Based on an implementation in the Ethereum network and subsequent evaluation, we conclude that the reputation mechanism can contribute to leveling information asymmetry and reducing risk while increasing reputation and trust. The mechanism lends itself to being used in other business-to-business scenarios that suffer from similar information asymmetries.","lang":"eng"}],"quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"bibtex":"@inbook{Hemmrich_Nissen_2026, title={A blockchain-based reputation system for consulting}, booktitle={ Advanced Studies in Consulting Research and Digitalization – A Scientific Update on the Digital Transformation of the Consulting Industry. For design science research (DSR), such technologies foster entirely new vistas for the design of IT artifacts that make use of their generative capabilities, but also influence DSR methodology. This shift is much more profound than it has been discussed so far. To identify existing implications of GenAI for design-oriented research in IS, we report results from an integrative literature review of recent DSR publications in leading IS outlets. Thereby, we synthesize five major theoretical challenges that arise when using GenAI in DSR projects: (1) an obscure composition of the artifact, (2) an opaque contextualization of the LLM, (3) a fragile internal consistency of the artifact, (4) a rapid erosion of prescriptive knowledge, and (5) missing methodological guidance. We investigate these challenges and conceptualize a set of three guidelines that inform DSR in the rising era of GenAI. These guidelines support researchers in designing and justifying GenAI-related DSR processes and in precisely articulating the theoretical grounding of their design decisions and evaluation strategies."}],"publication":"Lecture Notes in Computer Science","type":"conference","department":[{"_id":"195"}],"date_created":"2026-06-03T09:20:18Z","status":"public","conference":{"start_date":"2026-06-08","name":"DESRIST 2026","location":"Muenster","end_date":"2026-06-10"},"user_id":"59677","volume":16606,"_id":"65764","publisher":"Springer Nature Switzerland","quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"bibtex":"@inproceedings{zur Heiden_Beverungen_Bartelheimer_Breidbach_2026, place={Cham}, series={ Lecture Notes in Computer Science}, title={Design Science Research in an Era of Generative AI—Challenges and Theoretical Guidelines}, volume={16606}, DOI={10.1007/978-3-032-28313-9_22}, booktitle={Lecture Notes in Computer Science}, publisher={Springer Nature Switzerland}, author={zur Heiden, Philipp and Beverungen, Daniel and Bartelheimer, Christian and Breidbach, Christoph}, year={2026}, collection={ Lecture Notes in Computer Science} }","ama":"zur Heiden P, Beverungen D, Bartelheimer C, Breidbach C. Nearly two decades ago, the service system concept was introduced as a foundational abstraction in service research, drawing on ideas from the service-dominant logic (S-D logic) of marketing. Despite its widespread adoption in service research, particularly in the IS discipline, the service system concept lacks a solid theoretical foundation. This has resulted in conceptual ambiguity and overlap with related constructs, such as service ecosystems. Moreover, it has largely remained a static analytical lens, insufficiently capturing dynamic service phenomena, including value co-creation and co-destruction, as well as the emergence of institutional arrangements. To address these limitations, we propose Luhmann’s systems theory (LST) as a robust framework for conceptualizing service systems as autopoietic (self-creating) systems, in which communication serves as the fundamental mechanism that drives value co-creation. We employ a two-phase solution framework: in phase 1, we solve the Charging Location and Electric Vehicle Scheduling Problem to generate vehicle schedules that are feasible for electric operation; in phase 2, these schedules serve as input to a multi-period transition planning model that minimizes the total cost of ownership while determining fleet replacement and charging infrastructure deployment. Our experiments show that schedules obtained from solving the integrated charging location and vehicle scheduling problem significantly outperform traditional methods, resulting in lower total cost of ownership. Additionally, transition plans reduce local emissions by up to 85% compared to a diesel-only scenario. We find that vehicle rotations with long distances and sufficient idle time are prioritized for electrification, enabling earlier emission reductions and cost savings. This highlights the importance of adopting vehicle scheduling tailored for electric buses, rather than relying on legacy diesel schedules."}],"date_created":"2026-06-13T06:38:22Z","file":[{"content_type":"application/pdf","success":1,"file_id":"65858","access_level":"closed","file_size":1379145,"file_name":"ELSEVIER ARTICLE.pdf","date_updated":"2026-06-13T06:45:51Z","relation":"main_file","date_created":"2026-06-13T06:45:51Z","creator":"schryen"}],"department":[{"_id":"277"}],"type":"journal_article","keyword":["Electric bus","Multi-period planning","Electric vehicle scheduling","Charging infrastructure","Fleet replacement"]},{"status":"public","has_accepted_license":"1","page":"555-579","_id":"61366","publisher":"Informa UK Limited","ddc":["000"],"user_id":"72850","volume":35,"file_date_updated":"2026-06-13T06:49:02Z","citation":{"ieee":"G. We contextualize our resulting typology in the\r\nhealth service context and integrate extant literature on technology-enabled service, AI\r\nconsciousness, and AI ethics into the narrative.\r\n\r\nFindings: This study provides a unique theoretical contribution to service research in the form of\r\na Type IV theory. It enables future service researchers to apprehend, explain, and predict how\r\nfunctionally conscious AI in service might unfold.\r\n\r\nOriginality: An increasingly prolific public discourse acknowledges that conscious AI systems\r\nmay emerge. Against this backdrop, this study aims to systematically explore a question that is\r\nperhaps the most critical and timely, but also inherently speculative, in relation to AI in service\r\nresearch by introducing much-needed theory and terminology.\r\n\r\nPractical implications: The ethical use of conscious AI in service could emerge as a distinct\r\ncompetitive advantage in the future. Achieving this outcome involves speculative yet actionable\r\nrecommendations that include training, guiding, and controlling how humans engage with such\r\nsystems, developing appropriate wellbeing protocols for functionally conscious AI systems, and\r\nestablishing AI rights and governance frameworks."}],"issue":"4","publication":"Journal of Service Management","department":[{"_id":"195"}],"keyword":["AI","AI consciousness","AI ethics","service systems"],"type":"journal_article","date_created":"2025-09-23T11:47:47Z","file":[{"relation":"main_file","date_updated":"2025-11-10T10:20:48Z","file_name":"Breidbach et al, 2025_Conscious AI in Service_w link.pdf","access_level":"closed","file_size":743479,"file_id":"62150","content_type":"application/pdf","success":1,"creator":"dabe","date_created":"2025-11-10T10:20:48Z"}],"has_accepted_license":"1","status":"public","volume":37,"user_id":"59677","ddc":["380"],"_id":"61410","publisher":"Emerald","page":"597-621","quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"short":"C.
