  abstract     = {{Lateral leakage of TM modes in dielectric optical waveguides of rib/ridge or strip-loaded types can be fully suppressed, if the waveguide core is formed not through a strip that protrudes at one side (up) from the remaining lateral guiding slab, but through parallel strips on both sides (up and down), such that the resulting cross section becomes vertically symmetric. The fairly general arguments underlying the leakage suppression apply to TM modes of all orders simultaneously, and are independent of wavelength. These plus-shaped waveguides support strictly guided, non-leaky TM modes for, in principle, arbitrarily shallow etching.}},

  abstract     = {{Phased arrays are vital in communication systems and have received significant interest in the field of optoelectronics and photonics, enabling a wide range of applications such as LiDAR, holography, wireless communication, etc. In this work, we present a blazed grating antenna that is optimized to have upward radiation efficiency as high as 80% with a compact footprint of 3.5 μm × 2 μm at an operational wavelength of 1.55 μm. Our numerical investigations demonstrate that this antenna in a 64 × 64 phased array configuration is capable of producing desired far-field radiation patterns. Additionally, our antenna possesses a low side lobe level of -9.7 dB and a negligible reflection efficiency of under 1%, making it an attractive candidate for integrated optical phased arrays.}},

  abstract     = {{As the field of healthcare increasingly adopts artificial intelligence, it becomes important to understand which types of explanations increase transparency and empower users to develop confidence and trust in the predictions made by machine learning (ML) systems. 
In shared decision-making scenarios where doctors cooperate with ML systems to reach an appropriate decision, establishing mutual trust is crucial. In this paper, we explore different approaches to generating explanations in eXplainable AI (XAI) and make their underlying arguments explicit so that they can be evaluated by medical experts.
In particular, we present the findings of a user study conducted with physicians to investigate their perceptions of various types of AI-generated explanations in the context of diagnostic decision support. The study aims to identify the most effective and useful explanations that enhance the diagnostic process. 
In the study, medical doctors filled out a survey to assess different types of explanations. Further, an interview was carried out post-survey to gain qualitative insights on the requirements of explanations incorporated in diagnostic decision support. Overall, the insights gained from this study contribute to understanding the types of explanations that are most effective.}},

  abstract     = {{While the importance of explainable artificial intelligence in high-stakes decision-making is widely recognized in existing literature, empirical studies assessing users' perceived value of explanations are scarce. In this paper, we aim to address this shortcoming by conducting an empirical study focused on measuring the perceived value of the following types of explanations: plain explanations based on feature attribution, counterfactual explanations and complex counterfactual explanations. We measure an explanation's value using five dimensions: perceived accuracy, understandability, plausibility, sufficiency of detail, and user satisfaction. Our findings indicate a sweet spot of explanation complexity, with both dimensional and structural complexity positively impacting the perceived value up to a certain threshold.}},

  abstract     = {{Dielectric slab waveguides made of thin-film-lithium-niobate (TFLN) media are consid-ered, for operation in the linear regime. We outline and implement a largely analytic procedure forrigorous modal analysis of three-layer slabs with birefringent, anisotropic core. For Z-cut wave-guides, the slab eigenmode problem separates into uncoupled sets of scalar equations for TE andTM modes. Slabs in X-cut configuration support mostly mildly hybrid eigenmodes, with clear pre-dominant TE or TM polarization, and with effective indices that depend on the propagation directionof the modes, relative to the crystal axes. Strong hybridization can be observed for near degeneratemodes in singular configurations without vertical symmetry, or in symmetric slabs where two nearlydegenerate modes are of the same symmetry class. Dispersion curves for slab thickness and propa-gation angle are discussed, for slabs with oxide and air cover. }},

  abstract     = {{In a successful dialogue in general and a successful explanation in specific, partners need to account for both, the task model (what is relevant for the task) and the partner model (what one can con- tribute). The phenomenon of coupling between task and the partner model becomes especially interesting in the context of Human– Robot Interaction where humans have to deal with unknown ca- pabilities of the robot, which can momentarily be perceived when the robot is unable to contribute to the task. Following research on the path over manner prominence in an action [31–33], a robot ex- plained actions to a human by emphasizing two aspects – the path ("where" component) and the manner ("how" component). On criti- cal trials, the robot occasionally omitted one of these components where participants sought missing information for the path or the manner. Participants’ information-seeking and gaze behaviour were analysed. Analysis confirms the initial predictions for, a) task model (path over manner prominence), i.e., earlier information-seeking for path-missing than manner-missing trials, and b) partner model, i.e., while information-seeking is predominantly tied to the attention on the robot’s face, when robot fails to provide resolution, attention shifts more often towards its torso – a behavior likely to indicate an exploration of the robot’s capabilities. An individual-level anal- ysis further confirms that the intra-individual variation in the task model is partly influenced by the perceived capability of the robot.}},

  abstract     = {{Modern vehicles are becoming more connected and autonomous, and more software-defined in general. Such connectivity leads to security risks due to the increased attack surface for external intrusions. In addition, attacks can also lead to safety hazards as cars contain multiple safety-critical components. Therefore both safety and security must be considered in combination. In this whitepaper, we describe a tool-supported analysis method aligned with automotive standards to identify safety and security dependencies and automatically derive corresponding test cases. These test cases can be imported into the existing dSPACE tool chain to improve efficiency by reducing time-consuming manual work and susceptibility to errors. Thereby, our method brings together system design and testing phases to pave the way for an integrated safety and security-by-design life cycle in the automotive domain.}},

  abstract     = {{Human and model-generated texts can be distinguished by examining the magnitude of likelihood in language. However, it is becoming increasingly difficult as language model's capabilities of generating human-like texts keep evolving. This study provides a new perspective by using the relative likelihood values instead of absolute ones, and extracting useful features from the spectrum-view of likelihood for the human-model text detection task. We propose a detection procedure with two classification methods, supervised and heuristic-based, respectively, which results in competitive performances with previous zero-shot detection methods and a new state-of-the-art on short-text detection. Our method can also reveal subtle differences between human and model languages, which find theoretical roots in psycholinguistics studies.}},
