We show proof-of-principle detection of evanescently coupled photons of 1550 nm wavelength using bidirectional waveguide coupling for two orthogonal polarization directions. We investigate the internal detection efficiency as well as detector absorption using coupling-independent characterization measurements. Our previous CogniDo GI study found no changes of cognition in the early postprandial phase after consumption of two rice types with medium vs. high dietary GI for lunch (i.e., 45 min after starting lunch). This study investigated whether the dietary GI of lunch has an impact on cognition of schoolchildren in the late postprandial phase, 90 min after lunch.</jats:p>\r\n              </jats:sec><jats:sec>\r\n                <jats:title>Methods</jats:title>\r\n                <jats:p>A randomized, 2 × 2 crossover intervention study was conducted at a comprehensive school with 5th and 6th grade students. Participants (<jats:italic>n</jats:italic> = 212) were randomly assigned to either sequence 1 or 2. In the first period, participants of sequence 1 received a dish with high GI rice (GI: 79), those of sequence 2 with medium GI rice (GI: 64)—in the second period, 1 week later, vice versa. Computer-based cognitive testing was performed 90 min after lunch examining tonic alertness, visual search and task switching, and working memory. Treatment effects and treatment effects adjusted for estimated lunch glycemic load (GL) were analyzed using a linear mixed model.</jats:p>\r\n              </jats:sec><jats:sec>\r\n                <jats:title>Results</jats:title>\r\n                <jats:p>The selected cognitive parameters were not affected by the GI of lunch 90 min after lunch, neither after intention-to-treat nor in the per-protocol analysis. In the present study, an automated analysis of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images is described, which enables the recognition of the individual nanospheres in densely packed monolayers in order to perform a statistical quantification of the sphere size, mask opening size, and sphere-sphere separation distributions. Search algorithms based on Fourier transformation, cross-correlation, multiple-angle intensity profiling, and sphere edge point detection techniques allow for a sphere detection efficiency of at least 99.8%, even in the case of considerable sphere size variations. While the sphere positions and diameters are determined by fitting circles to the spheres edge points, the openings between sphere triples are detected by intensity thresholding. For the analyzed polystyrene sphere monolayers with sphere sizes between 220 and 600 nm and a diameter spread of around 3% coefficients of variation of 6.8–8.1% for the opening size are found. In einer Vielzahl von Studien zeigten sich sowohl für die Varianz des Körpergewichts als auch für die Entstehung von Essstörungen Erblichkeitsschätzer (Heritabilitätsraten) von über 50 %. Mit diesem Wissen begab man sich in den 90er-Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts auf die Suche nach den zugrundeliegenden Genen (genauer: genetischen Varianten), die das Körpergewicht, das Essverhalten oder beide Phänotypen auf Grundlage geteilter Mechanismen beeinflussen. Zunächst wurden Kandidatengenstudien durchgeführt. Dabei untersuchte man auf Grundlage unterschiedlicher, v. a. aber pathophysiologisch plausibler Überlegungen Gene mit hoher Relevanz für die untersuchten Phänotypen. Dieser Ansatz war für Essstörungen nicht sehr erfolgreich, für die Gewichtsregulation konnte eine Handvoll Gene identifiziert werden. Verbunden mit großen methodischen Fortschritten in der genetischen Forschung und v. a. der Etablierung sogenannter genomweiter Assoziationsstudien (GWAS) Anfang der 2000er-Jahre konnten bislang über 1000 Varianten/Genorte detektiert werden, die das Körpergewicht beeinflussen. Für die Essstörung Anorexia nervosa (AN) sind aktuell acht solcher Genorte beschrieben. A prerequisite for these applications is a precise control and understanding of the poling mechanisms to enable the fabrication of high-grade domain grids. In contrast to the widely used material lithium niobate, the domain growth in KTP is less studied, because many standard methods, such as selective etching or polarization microscopy, provides less insight or are not applicable on non-polar surfaces, respectively. In this work, we present results of confocal Raman-spectroscopy of the ferroelectric domain structure in KTP. Exploiting their potential for further improvement and development requires a fundamental understanding of their electronic structure. So far, the most commonly used experimental techniques for this purpose have been all-optical spectroscopy methods that, however, are generally averaging in momentum space. Additional information can be gained by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), which measures the electronic structure with momentum resolution. Here we report on the use of extremely low-energy ARPES (photon energy ~ 7 eV) to increase depth sensitivity and access buried QW states, located at 3 nm and 6 nm below the surface of cubic-GaN/AlN and GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures, respectively. We find that the QW states in cubic-GaN/AlN can indeed be observed, but not their energy dispersion, because of the high surface roughness. The GaAs/AlGaAs QW states, on the other hand, are buried too deep to be detected by extremely low-energy ARPES. Since the sample surface is much flatter, the ARPES spectra of the GaAs/AlGaAs show distinct features in momentum space, which can be reconducted to the band structure of the topmost surface layer of the QW structure. The question arises if this is also true for the performance in mental body-rotation tasks (MBRT).\r\nAIM: Taking the embodied cognition approach into account, the first aim of the present study was to examine the potential influence of different demands on dynamic stability for two postures (parallel stand vs. tandem stand) on solving two versions of the MBRT, inducing either an object-based or an egocentric perspective transformation strategy. The second aim was to investigate if these different demands on dynamic stability are reflected in postural sway parameters.\r\nMETHOD: Thirty participants (18 females and 12 males) were tested in the two MBRTs and in a control condition. All tasks were performed while standing on a balance beam in tandem stand and in a feet parallel position on a force plate.\r\nRESULTS: The results for response time and response error revealed effects of rotation angle and task, but no effect of posture. Athletes younger than 25 years who return to sports have a second injury rate of 23%. There may be a mismatch between rehabilitation contents and the demands an athlete faces after returning to sports. Current return-to-sports (RTS) tests utilize closed and predictable motor skills; however, demands on the field are different. Neurocognitive functions are essential to manage dynamic sport situations and may fluctuate after peripheral injuries. Most RTS and rehabilitation paradigms appear to lack this aspect, which might be linked to increased risk of second injury. </jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Objective:</jats:title><jats:p> This systematic and scoping review aims to map existing evidence about neurocognitive and neurophysiological functions in athletes, which could be linked to ACL injury in an integrated fashion and bring an extensive perspective to assessment and rehabilitation approaches. </jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Data Sources:</jats:title><jats:p> PubMed and Cochrane databases were searched to identify relevant studies published between 2005 and 2020 using the keywords ACL, brain, cortical, neuroplasticity, cognitive, cognition, neurocognition, and athletes. </jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Study Selection:</jats:title><jats:p> Studies investigating either neurocognitive or neurophysiological functions in athletes and linking these to ACL injury regardless of their design and technique were included. </jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Study Design:</jats:title><jats:p> Systematic review. </jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Level of Evidence:</jats:title><jats:p> Level 3. </jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Data Extraction:</jats:title><jats:p> The demographic, temporal, neurological, and behavioral data revealing possible injury-related aspects were extracted and summarized. </jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Results:</jats:title><jats:p> A total of 16 studies were included in this review. Deficits in different neurocognitive domains and changes in neurophysiological functions could be a predisposing risk factor for, or a consequence caused by, ACL injuries. </jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Conclusion:</jats:title><jats:p> Clinicians should view ACL injuries not only as a musculoskeletal but also as a neural lesion with neurocognitive and neurophysiological aspects. With cationic molybdenum imido alkylidene N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes confined in tailored ordered mesoporous silica, RCM can be run with macrocyclization selectivities up to 98% and high substrate concentrations up to 0.1 M. Molecular dynamics simulations show that the high conversions are a direct result of the proximity between the surface-bound catalyst, proven by extended X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and the surface-located substrates. Back-diffusion of the macrocycles decreases with decreasing pore diameter of the silica and is responsible for the high macrocyclization efficiency. Also, Z-selectivity increases with decreasing pore diameter and increasing Tolman electronic parameter of the NHC. Selected catalysts were selectively immobilized inside the mesopores of SBA-15 with average pore diameters of 5.0 and 6.2 nm. Together with their homogenous progenitors, the immobilized catalysts were used in the hydrosilylation of terminal alkynes. For aromatic alkynes, both the neutral and cationic Rh(I) complexes showed excellent reactivity with exclusive formation of the β(E)-isomer. For aliphatic alkynes, however, selectivity of the Rh(I) complexes was low. By contrast, the neutral and cationic Rh(III) Cp* NHC complexes proved to be highly regio- and stereoselective catalysts, allowing for the formation of the thermodynamically less stable β-(Z)-vinylsilane isomers at room temperature. Notably, the SBA-15 immobilized Rh(I) catalysts, in which the pore walls provide an additional confinement, showed excellent β-(Z)-selectivity in the hydrosilylation of aliphatic alkynes, too. Also, in the case of 4-aminophenylacetylene, selective formation of the β(Z)-isomer was observed with a neutral SBA-15 supported Rh(III) Cp* NHC complex but not with its homogenous counterpart.
