Students often demonstrate limited ability to link these different levels. Augmented reality (AR) offers the possibility to increase contiguity by embedding virtual models into hands-on experiments. Therefore, this paper presents a pre- and post-test study investigating how learning and cognitive load are influenced by AR during hands-on experiments. Three comparison groups (AR, animation and filmstrip), with a total of N = 104 German secondary school students, conducted and explained two hands-on experiments. Whereas the AR group was allowed to use an AR app showing virtual models of the processes on the submicroscopic level during the experiments, the two other groups were provided with the same dynamic or static models after experimenting. Results indicate no significant learning gain for the AR group in contrast to the two other groups. The perceived intrinsic cognitive load was higher for the AR group in both experiments as well as the extraneous load in the second experiment. For this reason, a considerable amount of engineering effort has been taken in order to improve the quality of particle sources and system components. At the same time, data analysis and collection methods based on post-selection have been used to mitigate the effect of particle losses. This has allowed for investigating experimentally multi-particle evolutions where the observer lacks knowledge about the system's intermediate propagation states. Nonetheless, the fundamental question how losses affect the behaviour of the surviving subset of a multi-particle system has not been investigated so far. For this reason, here we study the impact of particle losses in a quantum walk of two photons reconstructing the output probability distributions for one photon conditioned on the loss of the other in a known mode and temporal step of our evolution network. We present the underlying theoretical scheme that we have devised in order to model controlled particle losses, we describe an experimental platform capable of implementing our theory in a time multiplexing encoding. In the end we show how localized particle losses change the output distributions without altering their asymptotic spreading properties. We achieved these quantum dots by local droplet etching via InAl droplets in an In0.52Al0.48As layer and subsequent filling of the holes with In0.53Ga0.47As. Here, we present detailed investigations of the hole morphologies measured by atomic force microscopy. Statistical analysis of a set of nanoholes reveals a high degree of symmetry for nearly half of them when etched at optimized temperatures. Overgrowth with 50–150 nm In0.52Al0.48As increases their diameter and elongates the holes along the [01̄1]-direction. Thin Fe/Cr films with lateral composition gradients were deposited by magnetron sputtering; the analysis of the films was done with microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The local interfacial polymeric film formation could be therefore directly correlated with the Fe:Cr ratio. The local thickness and structure of the formed polycarbonate residue was analyzed by means of imaging ellipsometry, atomic force microscopy as well as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy under grazing incidence and XPS. Moreover, confocal fluorescence microscopy of the PC melt/alloy interface could reveal the formation of minor degradation products in the interphase region. The results show that already an Fe:Cr ratio of 2 : 1 leads to a strong inhibition of the thermal degradation in comparison to the unalloyed iron, and that in general, the enrichment of chromium in the passive film leads to an effective suppression of interfacial PC degradation. The data contributes to improving the mechanistic understanding of the role of iron during this process. Research has been conducted in laboratory settings, but the contribution of neurocognition to actual ACL injuries under real-world conditions is unknown.</jats:p>\r\n               </jats:sec>\r\n               <jats:sec>\r\n                  <jats:title>Objective</jats:title>\r\n                  <jats:p>To describe the possible neurocognitive errors involved in noncontact ACL injury mechanisms.</jats:p>\r\n               </jats:sec>\r\n               <jats:sec>\r\n                  <jats:title>Design</jats:title>\r\n                  <jats:p>Case series.</jats:p>\r\n               </jats:sec>\r\n               <jats:sec>\r\n                  <jats:title>Setting</jats:title>\r\n                  <jats:p>Soccer matches.</jats:p>\r\n               </jats:sec>\r\n               <jats:sec>\r\n                  <jats:title>Patients or Other Participants</jats:title>\r\n                  <jats:p>A total of 47 professional male soccer players.</jats:p>\r\n               </jats:sec>\r\n               <jats:sec>\r\n                  <jats:title>Main Outcome Measure(s)</jats:title>\r\n                  <jats:p>Three independent reviewers evaluated 47 videos of players sustaining noncontact ACL injuries. Neurocognitive errors in inhibitory control were operationalized as follows: (1) motor-response inhibition was scored when a player demonstrated poor decision-making and approached the opponent with high speed that reduced the ability to stop or change the intended action and (2) an attentional error was scored when a player shifted his selective attention away from the relevant task to irrelevant stimuli.</jats:p>\r\n               </jats:sec>\r\n               <jats:sec>\r\n                  <jats:title>Results</jats:title>\r\n                  <jats:p>Of 47 noncontact ACL injuries, 26 (55%) were related to a pressing-type injury, 19 (73%) of which involved a deceiving action made by the opponent, suggesting poor inhibitory control of the defender. Of the remaining 21 noncontact ACL injuries (45%), 16 (76%) could be attributed to attentional errors. Agreement among the 3 raters was very good for all items except poor decision-making, which showed fair to good agreement (Fleiss κ = 0.71). Interrater reliability was excellent (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.99–1.00).</jats:p>\r\n               </jats:sec>\r\n               <jats:sec>\r\n                  <jats:title>Conclusions</jats:title>\r\n                  <jats:p>Errors in motor-response inhibitory control and attentional inhibition were common during noncontact ACL injury events in professional male soccer players.
