    \
Age-related changes in brain signal complexity are
associated with cognitive decline and reduced neural adaptivity in older adults.
Exergaming offers a promising prophylactic intervention combining physical and
cognitive training. The aim of the present study was to assess how exergaming
alters the temporal trajectory of brain signal complexity at rest and during gameplay
    in older adults.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
    \
Methods
\r\n
Twenty-eight
healthy older adults participated in a 4-week exergaming intervention. Electroencephalography
was recorded using 64 electrodes at rest (pre- and post-intervention) and during
exergaming (pre-, mid-, and post-intervention). Brain signal complexity was quantified
using multiscale entropy across 64 time scales on preprocessed signals.
\r\n
    \
\r\n
\r\n
Results
\r\n
    \
Post-intervention resting-state analysis revealed
significant reductions at fine and increases at coarse scales in frontal, central,
and posterior entropy. During gameplay, entropy declined widespread by mid-intervention,
particularly at coarse scales over frontal, central and temporal regions. From
mid- to post-intervention, the decline narrowed leaving a net pre-to-post reduction
concentrated at coarse scales in these regions.
\r\n
\r\n
    \
\r\n
Discussion
\r\n
    \
Resting-state changes indicated a shift toward a younger
brain profile, characterized by a transition from age-related increases in local
processing to enhanced distributed processing, which may potentially mitigate
the rise in neural modularity associated with aging. During gameplay, brain signal
complexity decreased in week 2, followed by a modest change by week 4, consistent
with the framework in which complexity initially streamlines and then adjusts
toward a task-specific optimum. These findings suggest that exergaming can beneficially
modulate brain complexity in older adults, offering the potential to reduce age-related
neural decline and support healthy brain aging.
\r\n
"

text: "The degrees of freedom (DoFs) of light determine the maximum number of independent
signal\r\nchannels an optical system can support. However, the polarization DoF
is intrinsically limited to two by\r\northogonality, which causes unavoidable
crosstalk and often forces position multiplexing, where different\r\nchannels
are assigned to distinct spatial locations to suppress crosstalk. This research
introduces a multilayer\r\nsynchronous polarization projection method that fundamentally
increases the DoF for polarization\r\nmultiplexing. The DoF equals twice the number
of projection layers. We experimentally demonstrate six-\r\nchannel polarization
multiplexing holography without position multiplexing. The six-channel multiplexing\r\nresults
indicate that our approach exceeds the conventional polarization multiplexing
method, yielding an\r\naverage 3.79 dB improvement in extinction ratio across
the six channels. Compared with the theoretical\r\nlimit of traditional polarization
multiplexing, our method reduces crosstalk by an average of 6.52 dB across\r\nall
channels in a seven-channel design. The polarization projection method breaks
the DoF limitation\r\nof polarization multiplexing, opening a path toward high-dimensional
photonic information encoding for\r\ncommunication, encryption, and imaging."

  text:
Encoding information in molecular arrangements on DNA origami nanostructures
(DONs) provides the basis for novel concepts in molecular data storage and computing.
To preserve their integrity over long timescales, the information‐carrying DONs
are often stored in a frozen state. Here, we investigate the effect of repeated
freeze–thaw (F/T) cycles on the structural and functional integrity of DONs carrying
biotin (Bt) modifications. Streptavidin (SAv) binding is used to visualize the
stored information by atomic force microscopy (AFM) before and after 40 F/T cycles.
Two strategies are compared by F/T cycling of (I) SAv‐bound DONs and (II) SAv‐free
DONs that are exposed to SAv directly before AFM imaging. Our results reveal that
while the DONs retain their overall shape, F/T cycling induces a small amount
of damage, leading to slightly reduced SAv binding. Adding glycerol at mM concentrations
efficiently protects the DONs and restores the original SAv binding yields. Nevertheless,
SAv exposure after F/T cycling leads to slightly higher and more consistent SAv
binding yields and a lower background of nonspecifically adsorbed SAv compared
to Strategy I. This makes information readout by AFM more efficient and renders
Strategy II more convenient for long‐term storage of information‐carrying DONs
    with repeated information readout.

the problem is naturally described by a quantum rotor, rendering the commonly

  text: "
Abstract
\r\n
Lithographic
surface patterning is a cornerstone of modern materials and device fabrication.
Although the available lithography techniques are constantly being advanced to
push the feature sizes down to the few-nanometer scale, such developments are
associated with many technological and economic challenges. Combining established
top-down lithography with bottom-up self-assembly strategies has the potential
to overcome those challenges and enable the manipulation of matter with molecular
precision. One of the most exciting approaches in this regard is to harness the
programmability of DNA self-assembly to create precise DNA nanostructure masks
to be used in the lithographic patterning of diverse substrates. DNA nanotechnology
has provided us with a versatile toolbox for the high-yield synthesis of 2D and
3D nanostructures with complex, user-defined shapes at unprecedented molecular
accuracy. Consequently, the last decade has seen intense research efforts aimed
at transferring such DNA nanostructure shapes into functional organic and inorganic
materials and we have now arrived at a point where sophisticated molecular lithography
approaches utilize DNA nanostructure masks for the fabrication of plasmonic surfaces
for metamaterials and sensing applications. This review summarizes how the spatial
information of such DNA nanostructure masks can be transferred into various organic
and inorganic materials through selective etching and deposition steps. The review
also discusses recent developments toward all-purpose molecular lithography schemes
and highlights promising extensions of the discussed methods toward new materials
    systems and application fields.
"

  text:
Superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) can enable
photon-number resolution (PNR) based on accurate measurements of the detector’s
response time to few-photon optical pulses. In this work, we investigate the impact
of the optical pulse shape and duration on the accuracy of this method. We find
that Gaussian temporal pulse shapes yield cleaner arrival-time histograms and,
thus, more accurate PNR, compared to bandpass-filtered pulses of equal bandwidth.
For low system jitter and an optical pulse duration comparable to the other jitter
contributions, photon numbers can be discriminated in our system with a commercial
SNSPD. At 60 ps optical pulse duration, photon-number discrimination is significantly
reduced. Furthermore, we highlight the importance of using the correct arrival-time
histogram model when analyzing photon-number assignment. Using exponentially modified
Gaussian distributions, instead of the commonly used Gaussian distributions, we
can more accurately determine photon-number misidentification probabilities. Finally,
we reconstruct the positive operator-valued measures of the detector, revealing
sharp features that indicate the intrinsic PNR capabilities.

text: Metasurfaces are powerful tools for manipulating light using small structures
on the nanoscale. In most metasurfaces, near-field couplings are treated as being
unfavorable perturbations. Here, we experimentally investigate a structure consisting
of sinusoidally modulated silicon waveguides where near-field coupling of local
resonances leads to negative coupling, i.e., a negative coupling constant. This
gives rise to wave-vector-dependent eigenstates of elliptical, linear, and circular
polarizations. In particular, fully circular polarization states are not only
present at a single point in momentum space (k-space) but also along a line. This
circular polarization line, as well as a linear polarization line, emanates from
a polarization degeneracy at the Dirac point. We experimentally validate the existence
of these eigenstates and demonstrate the energy-, polarization-, and wave vector
dependence of this metasurface as well as its sensitivity to fabrication tolerances.
By tuning the incident k-vector, certain polarization-energy eigenstates are strongly
reflected, allowing for uses in angle-tunable polarization filters and light sources.

text: "There are few things left on earth that people have not attempted to measure.
From temperature to time, from finances to football, numbers are a crucial mediator
of how we perceive and understand the world we live in. Increasingly, however,
it is humans themselves who are the subject of quantification. Our fitness and
success, even our personality traits and attractiveness, are now the stuff of
scales and scores. But what does it do to us to be on the receiving end of such
measurement?\r\n\r\nOne of the world’s most successful global metrics is the school
grade. Long predating the digital age, educational marks can be traced back at
least to sixteenth-century European schools and have since conquered the world,
becoming the indicator of academic achievement. \r\n\r\nTo understand what it
means to be quantified, Noëlle Rohde undertook in-depth fieldwork in a German
comprehensive school where students receive more than one hundred grades per year.
By staying close to the pupils as they are continually examined and assessed,
her ethnography illustrates how marks mould students’ self-images, how they enforce
meritocratic thinking and serve as a potent disciplinary tool. Marked: School
Grades and the Quantified Life not only offers a nuanced account of the effects
of grades on students, but also tells a cautionary tale of the increasing quantification
    of human life. "

Abstract
Social media is integral to adolescents’ daily lives and plays an important role in their health- and fitness-related behavior, particularly through trends such as #fitspiration, a portmanteau of “fit” and “inspiration.” This trend has become a prominent aspect of adolescents’ fitness culture. Empirical studies demonstrate that while #fitspiration holds the potential to motivate adolescents to be physically active, it also perpetuates gender-stereotyped, predominantly White, ableist, and normative body ideals associated with fitness and an idealized weight. This trend can be linked to an increased risk of body image concerns or disordered eating among adolescents. Understanding adolescents’ engagement with fitspiration content is crucial for tailoring health and media literacy education within physical education. Therefore, a systematic review of qualitative and quantitative studies was conducted. A search of five electronic databases yielded 312 abstracts, of which 12 met the inclusion criteria. The analysis of the selected studies was based on thematic analysis and included both primary and secondary data. Seven analytical themes emerged: (1) 37–56% of adolescents actively engage with fitspiration content on social media; (2) it fulfills their need for informal and accessible participation; (3) it fosters a sense of social connection; (4) they derive inspiration from peers and influencers; (5) they aspire to idealized body standards; (6) they seek quick solutions when dissatisfied with their bodies; and (7) a few become demotivated and critical when unable to achieve these ideals. Consequently, educators should balance the potential benefits with media literacy interventions to mitigate risks such as body image issues and eating disorders.
