  text: "
Abstract
\r\n
Lithographic
surface patterning is a cornerstone of modern materials and device fabrication.
Although the available lithography techniques are constantly being advanced to
push the feature sizes down to the few-nanometer scale, such developments are
associated with many technological and economic challenges. Combining established
top-down lithography with bottom-up self-assembly strategies has the potential
to overcome those challenges and enable the manipulation of matter with molecular
precision. One of the most exciting approaches in this regard is to harness the
programmability of DNA self-assembly to create precise DNA nanostructure masks
to be used in the lithographic patterning of diverse substrates. DNA nanotechnology
has provided us with a versatile toolbox for the high-yield synthesis of 2D and
3D nanostructures with complex, user-defined shapes at unprecedented molecular
accuracy. Consequently, the last decade has seen intense research efforts aimed
at transferring such DNA nanostructure shapes into functional organic and inorganic
materials and we have now arrived at a point where sophisticated molecular lithography
approaches utilize DNA nanostructure masks for the fabrication of plasmonic surfaces
for metamaterials and sensing applications. This review summarizes how the spatial
information of such DNA nanostructure masks can be transferred into various organic
and inorganic materials through selective etching and deposition steps. The review
also discusses recent developments toward all-purpose molecular lithography schemes
and highlights promising extensions of the discussed methods toward new materials
    systems and application fields.
"

  text:
Superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) can enable
photon-number resolution (PNR) based on accurate measurements of the detector’s
response time to few-photon optical pulses. In this work, we investigate the impact
of the optical pulse shape and duration on the accuracy of this method. We find
that Gaussian temporal pulse shapes yield cleaner arrival-time histograms and,
thus, more accurate PNR, compared to bandpass-filtered pulses of equal bandwidth.
For low system jitter and an optical pulse duration comparable to the other jitter
contributions, photon numbers can be discriminated in our system with a commercial
SNSPD. At 60 ps optical pulse duration, photon-number discrimination is significantly
reduced. Furthermore, we highlight the importance of using the correct arrival-time
histogram model when analyzing photon-number assignment. Using exponentially modified
Gaussian distributions, instead of the commonly used Gaussian distributions, we
can more accurately determine photon-number misidentification probabilities. Finally,
we reconstruct the positive operator-valued measures of the detector, revealing
sharp features that indicate the intrinsic PNR capabilities.

Abstract
Social media is integral to adolescents’ daily lives and plays an important role in their health- and fitness-related behavior, particularly through trends such as #fitspiration, a portmanteau of “fit” and “inspiration.” This trend has become a prominent aspect of adolescents’ fitness culture. Empirical studies demonstrate that while #fitspiration holds the potential to motivate adolescents to be physically active, it also perpetuates gender-stereotyped, predominantly White, ableist, and normative body ideals associated with fitness and an idealized weight. This trend can be linked to an increased risk of body image concerns or disordered eating among adolescents. Understanding adolescents’ engagement with fitspiration content is crucial for tailoring health and media literacy education within physical education. Therefore, a systematic review of qualitative and quantitative studies was conducted. A search of five electronic databases yielded 312 abstracts, of which 12 met the inclusion criteria. The analysis of the selected studies was based on thematic analysis and included both primary and secondary data. Seven analytical themes emerged: (1) 37–56% of adolescents actively engage with fitspiration content on social media; (2) it fulfills their need for informal and accessible participation; (3) it fosters a sense of social connection; (4) they derive inspiration from peers and influencers; (5) they aspire to idealized body standards; (6) they seek quick solutions when dissatisfied with their bodies; and (7) a few become demotivated and critical when unable to achieve these ideals. Consequently, educators should balance the potential benefits with media literacy interventions to mitigate risks such as body image issues and eating disorders.

text: "Beamsplitters represent fundamental components in both classical and quantum
optical systems, enabling the distribution of light, as well as the generation
of interference, superposition, and entanglement. However, optical networks constructed
from conventional bulk 2 × 2-beamsplitters encounter inherent scalability issues,
as the number of required beamsplitters scales quadratically with the number of
optical modes for a fully connected network. Metasurfaces offer a promising route
to\r\novercome these constraints. By manipulating light at the wavelength scale,
compact optical components with advanced functionalities can be constructed, which
address several modes simultaneously. In this work, we design and experimentally
utilize a metasurface as a multiport beamsplitter. Furthermore, we realized a
multimode interferometer composed of two cascaded metasurfaces. We characterize
the individual and cascaded metasurfaces by using classical light, showing controllable
splitting ratios through tunable phase relations. We then expand the approach
to quantum light, employing single photons to demonstrate second- and third-order
photon correlations as well as single photon interference across multiple spatial
paths. These results establish metasurface-based multiport beamsplitters as a
scalable and reconfigurable platform bridging classical and quantum photonics. "

text: Metasurfaces are powerful tools for manipulating light using small structures
on the nanoscale. In most metasurfaces, near-field couplings are treated as being
unfavorable perturbations. Here, we experimentally investigate a structure consisting
of sinusoidally modulated silicon waveguides where near-field coupling of local
resonances leads to negative coupling, i.e., a negative coupling constant. This
gives rise to wave-vector-dependent eigenstates of elliptical, linear, and circular
polarizations. In particular, fully circular polarization states are not only
present at a single point in momentum space (k-space) but also along a line. This
circular polarization line, as well as a linear polarization line, emanates from
a polarization degeneracy at the Dirac point. We experimentally validate the existence
of these eigenstates and demonstrate the energy-, polarization-, and wave vector
dependence of this metasurface as well as its sensitivity to fabrication tolerances.
By tuning the incident k-vector, certain polarization-energy eigenstates are strongly
reflected, allowing for uses in angle-tunable polarization filters and light sources.

  text:
In recent years, nanostructures assembled by DNA have found promising
applications in optics, medicine, and sensing. DNA origami in particular provides
unique self‐assembly properties, not only enabling a vast variety of functionalization
schemes but also presenting a promising route to fabricate large‐scale, bottom‐up
nanostructured arrays. This approach has comparable precision to electron beam
lithography but avoids slow and expensive patterning steps. However, self‐assembly
of lattices with high order and well‐defined periodicity requires careful tuning
of the deposition parameters and interactions involved, which has been done mostly
on mica so far. As mica is not compatible with standard microfabrication processes,
we investigate here the assembly of DNA origami lattices on the most general microfabrication
material, that is, silicon wafers, which has turned out to be rather challenging.
We study how the forming of polycrystalline 2D‐fishnet‐type lattices is influenced
by different incubation conditions and strengths of the origami–origami and origami‐surface
interactions, with the aim to create large‐scale single‐crystalline lattices.
The lattices are characterized by atomic force microscopy and analyzed for precision
of formation, achievable domain size, and surface coverage of well‐formed lattices.
Thanks to the silicon substrate, these DNA origami lattices can be further combined
with traditional microfabrication processes to turn them, for example, into metamaterials
    with novel optical properties.

  text: "
ABSTRACT
\r\n
Ligation of
staple strands in DNA origami nanostructures (DONs) can yield enhanced structural
stability in critical environments. This process can be viewed as performing hundreds
of parallel reactions programmed on a self‐assembled nanoscale platform. While
previous studies have focused on investigating the collective results of the chemical
or enzymatic ligation reactions, herein, the global quantitative analysis of individual
ligation reactions is achieved using quantitative PCR (qPCR). By mapping enzymatic
ligation efficiency on a trapezoidal substructure representing one‐third of a
triangular DON, ligation is shown to preferentially occur at the trapezoid edges
rather than at inner sites. Excellent agreement between the experimental ligation
yields and docking simulations suggests that this is a result of variations in
the ligase docking probability. Ligation products involving more than two consecutive
sequences can be generated with each enzyme‐catalyzed reaction as an independent
event. Interestingly, the sharp contrast between the edges vs. the inner sites
has been abolished by changing the reaction conditions and performing the ligation
in a DMSO co‐solvent system. This analytic method provides unprecedented insight
into the multiple ligation reactions occurring in parallel within complex DONs
and will be an invaluable tool in the translation of DONs from the lab to real‐world
    applications.
"

  text:
For the ever-growing field of quantum information processing, large-scale,
efficient multiport interferometers serving as photonic processors are required.
In this context, the suitability of quantum walks as the interferometric base
for universal computation has been theoretically proven. In this work, we bridge
the gap between theoretical proposals and state-of-the-art experimental capabilities
by providing the recipe for the implementation of a universal photonic processor
in discrete-time quantum walks. Specifically, we present the protocol for translating
arbitrary linear transformations into the coin and step operator of a quantum
walk and map these to the experimental parameters of the established time-multiplexed
platform [A. Schreiber , Phys. Rev. Lett. , 050502 (2010)]. We show that our interface
is highly scalable and resource efficient due to the hybrid encoding consisting
of multiple degrees of freedom. Finally, we prove that our system is highly resilient
against experimental imperfections and show that it compares favorably against
    existing architectures.

text: Over the past decades, nanoparticulate drug carrier systems have emerged as
promising tools in medicine. A persistent challenge in current pharmacotherapy
is the limited selectivity of active pharmaceutical ingredients, resulting in
undesirable side effects. Smart drug delivery systems, which release encapsulated
active pharmaceutical ingredients in response to specific stimuli, offer a potential
solution by enabling controlled drug release. This approach can be particularly
relevant for exploiting biochemical differences between extracellular and intracellular
environments. In this study, self-immolative polydisulfide based polymers manufactured
from dithiothreitol were processed into nanoparticle formulations to respond preferentially
to elevated glutathione levels, which are characteristic of intracellular environments
and are often increased in tumor cells. The influence of polymer chain length
on the physicochemical properties of the resulting nanoparticles was investigated.
Lumogen® Red was incorporated as a model substance to determine the loading capacity
of the carrier system. Degradation was characterized using dynamic light scattering
and asymmetric flow field-flow fractionation, as well as by imaging techniques
such as atomic force microscopy. Selective release of the embedded substance was
demonstrated at elevated glutathione concentrations, while no significant release
was observed at extracellularly relevant levels (10 µM glutathione), where the
behavior was comparable to the buffer control. Increased release was observed
under intracellularly relevant conditions (2 – 10 mM glutathione). These findings
support a redox-responsive behavior under intracellular-like conditions. The latter
was proven for primary fibroblasts and the cancer cell lines BT-474, MCF-7 and
SK-BR-3 by quantification of intracellular low molecular weight thiols. The nanoparticle
uptake was confirmed in the investigated cell lines by visualization via confocal
laser scanning microscopy. Via lysosomal staining it was shown that nanoparticles
accumulate in lysosomes. Furthermore, the carrier system itself showed no cytotoxic
properties in cell culture studies against the four different cell types. The
developed system is a suitable and very promising smart drug delivery system in
the context of controlled drug release.
