The fabrication of low-loss optical waveguides, as well as high-grade periodically poled ferroelectric domain structures, requires a profound understanding of the material properties and crystal structure. In this regard, Raman spectroscopy offers the possibility to study and visualize domain structures, strain, defects, and the local stoichiometry, which are all factors impacting device performance. However, the accurate interpretation of Raman spectra and their changes with respect to extrinsic and intrinsic defects requires a thorough assignment of the Raman modes to their respective crystal features, which to date is only partly conducted based on phenomenological modelling. To address this issue, we calculated the phonon spectra of potassium titanyl phosphate and the related compounds rubidium titanyl phosphate (RbTiOPO4) and potassium titanyl arsenate (KTiOAsO4) based on density functional theory and compared them with experimental data. Overall, this allows us to assign various spectral features to eigenmodes of lattice substructures with improved detail compared to previous assignments. Nevertheless, the analysis also shows that not all features of the spectra can unambigiously be explained yet. A possible explanation might be that defects or long range fields not included in the modeling play a crucial rule for the resulting Raman spectrum. In conclusion, this work provides an improved foundation into the vibrational properties in the KTiOPO4 material family.","lang":"eng"}],"doi":"10.3390/cryst13101423","project":[{"grant_number":"231447078","_id":"168","name":"TRR 142 - B07: TRR 142 - Polaronen-Einfluss auf die optischen Eigenschaften von Lithiumniobat (B07*)"},{"_id":"55","name":"TRR 142 - B: TRR 142 - Project Area B"},{"name":"PhoQC: PhoQC: Photonisches Quantencomputing","_id":"266","grant_number":"PROFILNRW-2020-067"}],"user_id":"22501","oa":"1","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://doi.org/10.3390/cryst13101423"}],"keyword":["Inorganic Chemistry","Condensed Matter Physics","General Materials Science","General Chemical Engineering"],"publisher":"MDPI AG","funded_apc":"1","date_created":"2023-10-11T09:10:53Z","status":"public","publication_identifier":{"issn":["2073-4352"]},"year":"2023","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"_id":"47997","date_updated":"2023-10-11T09:15:58Z","author":[{"last_name":"Neufeld","full_name":"Neufeld, Sergej","first_name":"Sergej"},{"full_name":"Gerstmann, Uwe","first_name":"Uwe","id":"171","last_name":"Gerstmann","orcid":"0000-0002-4476-223X"},{"id":"40300","last_name":"Padberg","first_name":"Laura","full_name":"Padberg, Laura"},{"orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5693-3083","full_name":"Eigner, Christof","first_name":"Christof","last_name":"Eigner","id":"13244"},{"id":"53","last_name":"Berth","full_name":"Berth, Gerhard","first_name":"Gerhard"},{"last_name":"Silberhorn","id":"26263","first_name":"Christine","full_name":"Silberhorn, Christine"},{"last_name":"Eng","full_name":"Eng, Lukas M.","first_name":"Lukas M."},{"id":"468","last_name":"Schmidt","full_name":"Schmidt, Wolf Gero","first_name":"Wolf Gero","orcid":"0000-0002-2717-5076"},{"orcid":"0000-0003-4682-4577","last_name":"Rüsing","id":"22501","first_name":"Michael","full_name":"Rüsing, Michael"}],"intvolume":" 13","publication_status":"published","citation":{"bibtex":"@article{Neufeld_Gerstmann_Padberg_Eigner_Berth_Silberhorn_Eng_Schmidt_Rüsing_2023, title={Vibrational Properties of the Potassium Titanyl Phosphate Crystal Family}, volume={13}, DOI={<a href=\"https://doi.org/10.3390/cryst13101423\">10.3390/cryst13101423</a>}, number={101423}, journal={Crystals}, publisher={MDPI AG}, author={Neufeld, Sergej and Gerstmann, Uwe and Padberg, Laura and Eigner, Christof and Berth, Gerhard and Silberhorn, Christine and Eng, Lukas M. and Schmidt, Wolf Gero and Rüsing, Michael}, year={2023} }","mla":"Neufeld, Sergej, et al. “Vibrational Properties of the Potassium Titanyl Phosphate Crystal Family.” <i>Crystals</i>, vol. 13, no. 10, 1423, MDPI AG, 2023, doi:<a href=\"https://doi.org/10.3390/cryst13101423\">10.3390/cryst13101423</a>.","short":"S. This dissertation explores the effect of explicit pronunciation exercises on the English pronunciation of primary school children in Germany. Pronunciation is often taught through drilling exercises, not because it is the best way of learning pronunciation, but for a lack of tried and tested alternatives. The aim of this dissertation is to provide an alternative method of teaching the pronunciation of the TRAP vowel and the dental fricatives, focussing especially on the physical nature of pronunciation. Therefore, an intervention study with German-speaking primary school pupils was conducted. The 72 participants were taken from three different classes: two year 4 classes taught by two different teachers and one year 3 class taught by the same teacher as one of the year 4 classes. Each class was split into one control group and two intervention groups: one for the TRAP vowel and one for the dental fricatives. The pronunciation of all participants was tested once in the beginning of the study and twice at the end of the study. A six to eight week gap between the latter to tests allowed for an insight into longer-term results. The pupils of the intervention groups additionally participated in two one-on-one sessions with the researcher, each lasting no longer than three minutes, to practice their pronunciation of the respective phoneme(s). The results of this study show that the exercises had an effect on the pronunciation of the participants. The nature of that effect seems to depend on the age of the participants and their previous pronunciation instruction(s). The results provide valuable insights into how explicit instructions can influence the pronunciation of segmental features and implications not only for primary school teachers, but also for teacher training and curriculum development.","lang":"eng"}],"supervisor":[{"last_name":"Mindt","id":"32079","full_name":"Mindt, Ilka","first_name":"Ilka"}],"citation":{"chicago":"Hahn, Charlotte Anna. <i>Learning the Pronunciation of Segmental Features of English Phonology at German Primary Schools</i>. Ideologies and belief systems provide guidance when processing and evaluating information and give a coherent and comprehensible interpretation of reality. The first question is: why is an individual attracted to a particular ideology? Individuals choose ideologies that resonate with their subjective psychological needs and preferences. Second, how do individuals search for ideologies and find out which suit them best? We model an individual’s sequential information search for the best matching ideologies by applying Bayesian learning and utility optimization. Additional information enhances utility by reducing uncertainty. As a search is costly, the process may stop once an individual adopts an ideology even if the information set remains incomplete. Third, once they have chosen a particular ideology, individuals adhere to its rules and norms when making everyday decisions. Consumers not only physically consume, but they also act in accordance with their psychological needs.","lang":"eng"}],"keyword":["Economics","Ideology","Decision-making"],"user_id":"44010","publication":"Journal of Organizational Psychology","type":"journal_article","volume":23,"issue":"1"},{"department":[{"_id":"211"},{"_id":"209"}],"user_id":"9856","citation":{"ama":"Volgmann S. <i>Erlebnisorientiert Lehren Und Lernen in Der Beruflichen Bildung. Consumer protection regulations, such as GDPR, generally handle privacy by restricting data availability, such as requiring to limit user data to 'what is necessary' for a given purpose. In this work, we reason that providing stricter formal privacy guarantees, while increasing the volume of user data in the model, in most cases increases benefit for all parties involved, especially for the user. We demonstrate our arguments on two existing suicide risk assessment datasets of Twitter and Reddit posts. We present the first analysis juxtaposing user history length and differential privacy budgets and elaborate how modeling additional user context enables utility preservation while maintaining acceptable user privacy guarantees.
","lang":"eng"}],"doi":"10.1609/icwsm.v17i1.22186"},{"publication":"Proceedings of the 2022 Conference on Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing","date_created":"2023-10-19T08:26:21Z","publisher":"Association for Computational Linguistics","year":"2023","type":"conference","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"status":"public","_id":"48297","date_updated":"2023-10-19T12:05:55Z","title":"One size does not fit all: Investigating strategies for differentially-private learning across NLP tasks","author":[{"last_name":"Senge","full_name":"Senge, Manuel","first_name":"Manuel"},{"full_name":"Igamberdiev, Timour","first_name":"Timour","last_name":"Igamberdiev"},{"id":"101881","last_name":"Habernal","first_name":"Ivan","full_name":"Habernal, Ivan"}],"doi":"10.18653/v1/2022.emnlp-main.496","citation":{"ieee":"M. However, there has been a major discrepancy between the way natural language processing (NLP) researchers model and annotate arguments in court decisions and the way legal experts understand and analyze legal argumentation. While computational approaches typically simplify arguments into generic premises and claims, arguments in legal research usually exhibit a rich typology that is important for gaining insights into the particular case and applications of law in general. We address this problem and make several substantial contributions to move the field forward. First, we design a new annotation scheme for legal arguments in proceedings of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) that is deeply rooted in the theory and practice of legal argumentation research. Second, we compile and annotate a large corpus of 373 court decisions (2.3M tokens and 15k annotated argument spans). Finally, we train an argument mining model that outperforms state-of-the-art models in the legal NLP domain and provide a thorough expert-based evaluation. The majority of SRs on total protein intake had moderate or high methodological quality and moderate outcome-specific certainty of evidence according to NutriGrade, however, the latter was low for the majority of SRs on animal and plant protein. Six of the eight SRs reported risk increases with both total and animal protein. According to one SR, total protein intake in studies was ~ 21 energy percentage (%E) in the highest intake category and 15%E in the lowest intake category. Relative Risks comparing high versus low intake in most recent SRs ranged from 1.09 (two SRs, 95% CIs 1.02–1.15 and 1.06–1.13) to 1.11 (1.05–1.16) for total protein (between 8 and 12 cohort studies included) and from 1.13 (1.08–1.19) to 1.19 (two SRs, 1.11–1.28 and 1.11–1.28) (8–9 cohort studies) for animal protein. However, SRs on RCTs examining major glycaemic traits (HbA1c, fasting glucose, fasting insulin) do not support a clear biological link with T2D risk. For plant protein, some recent SRs pointed towards risk decreases and non-linear associations, however, the majority did not support an association with T2D risk.
\r\n
\r\n
Conclusion
\r\n
Higher total protein intake was possibly associated with higher T2D risk, while there is insufficient evidence for a risk increase with higher intakes of animal protein and a risk decrease with plant protein intake.
