  abstract     = {{Samples of dielectric optical waveguides of rib or strip type in thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) technology are characterized with respect to their optical loss using the Fabry-Pérot method. Attributing the losses mainly to sidewall roughness, we employ a simple perturbational procedure, based on rigorously computed mode profiles of idealized channels, to estimate the attenuation for waveguides with different cross sections. A single fit parameter suffices for an adequate modelling of the effect of the waveguide geometry on the loss levels.}},

  abstract     = {{We explore the polarization hysteretic behaviour and field-dependent permittivity of ferroelectric-dielectric 2D materials formed by random dispersions of low permittivity inclusions in a ferroelectric matrix, using finite element simulations. We show how the degree of impenetrability of dielectric inclusions plays a substantial role in controlling the coercive field, remnant and saturation polarizations of the homogenized materials. The results highlight the significance of the degree of impenetrability of inclusion in tuning the effective polarization properties of such ferroelectric composites: coercive field drops significantly as percolation threshold is attained and remnant polarization decreases faster than a linear decay.}},

  abstract     = {{Predicting the remaining useful life of technical 
systems has gained significant attention in recent years due to 
increasing demands for extending the lifespan of degrading system 
components. Therefore, already used systems are retrofitted by 
integrating sensors to monitor their performance and 
functionality, enabling accurate diagnosis of their condition and 
prediction of their remaining useful life. One of the main 
challenges in this field is identified in the missing data from the 
time where the retrofitted system has already run but without 
being monitored by sensors. In this paper, a novel approach for 
the combined diagnostics and prognostics of retrofitted systems is 
proposed. The methodology aims to provide an accurate diagnosis 
of the system’s health state and estimation of the remaining useful 
life by a combination of a machine learning and expert knowledge. 
To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology, a case 
study involving a retrofitted system in an industrial setting is 
selected and applied. It is demonstrated that the approach 
effectively diagnose the current system’s health state and 
accurately predict its remaining useful life, thereby enabling 
predictive maintenance and decision-making. Overall, our 
research contributes to advancing the field of condition 
monitoring for retrofitted systems by providing a comprehensive 
methodology that addresses the challenge of missing data.}},

  abstract     = {{<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>A comprehensive investigation of the potential of aqueous glucosamine solutions as an eco‐friendly solvent for CO<jats:sub>2</jats:sub> capture was performed. It includes an experimental study in a pilot plant setup and a theoretical analysis with a rate‐based model. The model was validated against the measured column profiles of temperature and CO<jats:sub>2</jats:sub> concentration in both liquid and gas phases. Model‐based parameter sensitivity studies revealed inherent challenges for an effective absorption process. A slow reaction rate and suboptimal chemical equilibrium conditions were identified as key limitations, restricting the absorption efficiency and CO<jats:sub>2</jats:sub> loading capacity of the glucosamine solution. Furthermore, an analysis of the dissociation constant of this novel absorbent was performed and its significance with respect to the (limited) performance, capability, and efficiency evaluation was highlighted.</jats:p>}},

  abstract     = {{Metaphorical language is a pivotal element inthe realm of political framing. Existing workfrom linguistics and the social sciences providescompelling evidence regarding the distinctivenessof conceptual framing for politicalideology perspectives. However, the nature andutilization of metaphors and the effect on audiencesof different political ideologies withinpolitical discourses are hardly explored. Toenable research in this direction, in this workwe create a dataset, originally based on newseditorials and labeled with their persuasive effectson liberals and conservatives and extend itwith annotations pertaining to metaphorical usageof language. To that end, first, we identifyall single metaphors and composite metaphors.Secondly, we provide annotations of the sourceand target domains for each metaphor. As aresult, our corpus consists of 300 news editorialsannotated with spans of texts containingmetaphors and the corresponding domains ofwhich these metaphors draw from. Our analysisshows that liberal readers are affected bymetaphors, whereas conservatives are resistantto them. Both ideologies are affected differentlybased on the metaphor source and targetcategory. For example, liberals are affected bymetaphors in the Darkness {&} Light (e.g., death)source domains, where as the source domain ofNature affects conservatives more significantly.}},
