The semiparametric \r\nvariants employ a multiplicative volatility decomposition into conditional and slowly varying \r\nunconditional components, where the latter is estimated via a data-driven local polynomial \r\nsmoother to accommodate non-stationarities commonly observed in financial time series. Based \r\non the revised Basel Committee framework for market-risk assessment, all models are capable \r\nof producing rolling one-day-ahead forecasts for Value at Risk (VaR) and Expected Shortfall \r\n(ES) under a wide range of symmetric and skewed innovation distributions. Their forecasting \r\naccuracy is examined using the regulatory traffic light tests for VaR and the recently developed \r\nES-specific traffic light procedure, complemented by the regulatory loss function. In addition, \r\nmodel selection incorporates both a recently proposed corrected firm-oriented loss function that \r\naccounts for opportunity costs and the Weighted Absolute Deviation (WAD) criterion. The \r\nempirical comparison demonstrates that (semiparametric) long memory GARCH models - \r\nparticularly those combining fractional dynamics with nonparametric scale adjustments - can \r\nserve as valuable alternatives to traditional parametric short memory models, offering more \r\nstable volatility estimates and improved tail-risk forecasts for practical risk management \r\napplications."}],"file":[{"relation":"main_file","date_updated":"2026-07-13T09:21:45Z","file_name":"TAF_WP_105_HankeUhdeFeng2026.pdf","access_level":"open_access","file_size":1830858,"file_id":"66450","content_type":"application/pdf","creator":"dhanke","date_created":"2026-07-13T09:21:45Z"}],"date_created":"2026-07-13T09:21:49Z","keyword":["semiparametric GARCH extension","data-driven local polynomial smoother","long memory","GARCH models","Value at Risk","Expected Shortfall","traffic light test","backtesting","Basel III","market risk"],"type":"working_paper","department":[{"_id":"200"},{"_id":"186"}],"oa":"1"},{"user_id":"63677","ddc":["330"],"_id":"66447","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"has_accepted_license":"1","date_updated":"2026-07-16T09:07:24Z","jel":["C4","C5","B23","B26","C32"],"author":[{"id":"63677","last_name":"Hanke","first_name":"Dominik Christian","full_name":"Hanke, Dominik Christian"},{"id":"20760","first_name":"Yuanhua","last_name":"Feng","full_name":"Feng, Yuanhua"},{"id":"36049","full_name":"Uhde, André","first_name":"André","last_name":"Uhde"}],"year":"2026","status":"public","title":"Comparing the behaviors of some original short and long memory exponential volatility models","department":[{"_id":"186"}],"oa":"1","type":"working_paper","keyword":["Modulus Log-GARCH","Modified (FI)EGARCH","Modulus asymmetric (FI)Log-GARCH","(FI)EGARCH","long memory","modulus-log transformation","QMLE","model selection","implementation in R"],"date_created":"2026-07-13T09:15:09Z","file":[{"content_type":"application/pdf","file_id":"66448","access_level":"open_access","file_size":1169286,"file_name":"TAF_WP_104_HankeFengUhde2026.pdf","date_updated":"2026-07-13T09:14:58Z","relation":"main_file","date_created":"2026-07-13T09:14:58Z","creator":"dhanke"}],"abstract":[{"text":"Volatility modeling is utilized across numerous fields including finance, environmental studies, and \r\nsocial sciences. It is particularly relevant in scenarios where understanding and predicting conditional \r\nvariability is crucial, such as when dealing with incremental or time-dependent data. In this paper, novel \r\nshort and long memory volatility models of the EGARCH family are introduced and analyzed, which \r\nare closely related to the well-established EGARCH model proposed by Nelson (1991) but share \r\ndesirable theoretical properties in several dimensions. Recently developed members of the so-called \r\nEGARCH family, which introduces a modulus-log transformation proposed by John and Draper (1980) \r\nand a power transformation for the size and magnitude effect to tackle the problem with near-zero \r\ninnovations and the asymmetric impact of positive and negative shocks on the volatility, are discussed. \r\nAfter a theoretical discussion of the proposed and related volatility models, the practical performance \r\nof the elaborated volatility models is compared to well-established and traditional GARCH approaches. \r\nA general QMLE algorithm is proposed to estimate the model parameters. The practical relevance of the \r\nadvanced models is illustrated through a comparative study. By applying these volatility models to a \r\nvariety of international stock index returns, this paper identifies market-specific characteristics as well \r\nas unique strengths and weaknesses of discussed volatility models. Although the practical performance \r\nof the recently introduced models is comparable to those obtained by the traditional EGARCH model, \r\nthey generally outperform traditional non-exponential volatility models used as benchmarks and thus \r\nprovide a useful alternative to existing short and long memory volatility models. Existing data-driven studies have mainly addressed post-occurrence expulsion detection, process-end classification, or the identification of influencing factors, whereas online monitoring requires short-term risk estimation before the event occurs. In this study, expulsion prediction is formulated as a sliding-window-based pre-expulsion risk estimation task for the currently welded spot. A physics-guided hybrid GRU-XGBoost ensemble is developed to combine temporal learning from dynamic resistance and electrode-force signals with process-physics-related scalar features describing heat input, resistance state, and force response. The framework was evaluated on 2730 valid welds, including 588 expulsion and 2142 non-expulsion welds, using weld-grouped five-fold cross-validation with fold-level working-point selection. The ensemble achieved an area under the ROC curve of 0.945 ± 0.004 and a weld-level recall of 90.6 ± 3.7% at an average false alarm rate of 9.8 ± 0.2%, outperforming both individual branches. For the 533 correctly warned expulsion welds, the median early-warning lead time was 56 ms. These results indicate that online, physically interpretable pre-expulsion risk prediction is feasible under low-false-alarm constraints within the investigated RSW configuration and provide a basis for future adaptive monitoring and control studies.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Journal of Manufacturing Processes","ddc":["600"],"user_id":"65085","volume":174,"page":"135-153","_id":"66541","publisher":"Elsevier BV","has_accepted_license":"1","status":"public","oa":"1","quality_controlled":"1","file_date_updated":"2026-07-18T12:04:02Z","citation":{"apa":"Yang, K., Li, C., Beck, R., Hein, D., & Meschut, G. Meanwhile, socially situated ‘end-users’ experience harms, such as hidden labor, reinforced stereotypes, and increased unpredictability, as machine learning advances. However, accurately modeling social context does not constitute design justice. This paper reinterprets Giuseppe Mantovani’s model of social context in human-computer interaction (HCI) to address the relational emergence and political situatedness of social context in human-AI interaction (HAI). Drawing on the concept of a multi-perspectival algorithmic imaginary, we (1) conceptualize context as nested and entangled relations, (2) identify actors, including users, developers, models, and interfaces, and (3) foreground the organization of relations of power. Recognizing that models are performative rather than predictive, we argue that the sociopolitical situatedness of context must be acknowledged alongside its limits. To challenge design authority, we propose that HCI and HAI strategically foster intra-actional negotiability, enabling users to challenge, reinterpret, or modify their relationship with technology through critical (design) practices.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"HCI International 2026 Posters: 28th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, HCII 2026, Montreal, QC, Canada, July 26–31, 2026, Proceedings, Part I","doi":"10.1007/978-3-032-30552-7_10","main_file_link":[{"url":"https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-032-30552-7_10"}],"series_title":"Communications in Computer and Information Science (CCIS)","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"date_updated":"2026-07-23T10:02:20Z","publication_status":"published","intvolume":" 3047","year":"2026","title":"Social Context in Human-AI Interaction (HAI): Towards a Theoretical Framework Based on Multi-Perspectival Imaginaries","author":[{"full_name":"Menne, Anna Lena","orcid":"0009-0008-0744-9165","last_name":"Menne","first_name":"Anna Lena","id":"118085"},{"full_name":"Schulz, Christian","first_name":"Christian","last_name":"Schulz","id":"72684"}],"project":[{"_id":"109","name":"TRR 318: Erklärbarkeit konstruieren"}],"citation":{"mla":"Menne, Anna Lena, and Christian Schulz. “Social Context in Human-AI Interaction (HAI): Towards a Theoretical Framework Based on Multi-Perspectival Imaginaries.” HCI International 2026 Posters: 28th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, HCII 2026, Montreal, QC, Canada, July 26–31, 2026, Proceedings, Part I, edited by Constantine Stephanidis et al., vol. 3047, Springer International Publishing, 2026, pp. 93–106, doi:10.1007/978-3-032-30552-7_10.","bibtex":"@inbook{Menne_Schulz_2026, series={Communications in Computer and Information Science (CCIS)}, title={Social Context in Human-AI Interaction (HAI): Towards a Theoretical Framework Based on Multi-Perspectival Imaginaries}, volume={3047}, DOI={10.1007/978-3-032-30552-7_10}, booktitle={HCI International 2026 Posters: 28th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, HCII 2026, Montreal, QC, Canada, July 26–31, 2026, Proceedings, Part I}, publisher={Springer International Publishing}, author={Menne, Anna Lena and Schulz, Christian}, editor={Stephanidis, Constantine and Margetis, George and Ntoa, Stavroula and Antona, Margherita and Salvendy, Gavriel}, year={2026}, pages={93–106}, collection={Communications in Computer and Information Science (CCIS)} }","ama":"Menne AL, Schulz C. Against the backdrop of platform capitalism, AI‐driven communication, surveillance infrastructures, disinformation and democratic crisis, the study asks how experts in digital democracy assess the present condition and possible futures of digital society. To address this question, the paper draws on the Futures of Digital Democracy Survey (FDDS), a two‐round international expert survey involving researchers, practitioners and civil society actors working in the fields of digital democracy, media, Internet governance and digital society. Combining futures research, scenario analysis, and qualitative and quantitative content analysis, the study investigates competing trajectories of digital development ranging from participatory digital democracy to corporate and state‐controlled digital fascism. The findings reveal a profound tension at the heart of contemporary digital society: while respondents overwhelmingly imagine an ideal future democracy in participatory and deliberative terms—centred on citizens’ assemblies, digital participation, public‐service Internet platforms and democratic AI—they simultaneously express deep pessimism about the actual direction of digital capitalism and platform power. Experts consider authoritarian and fascistic digital futures significantly more likely than democratic ones. The paper analyses these contradictions by examining the relationship between deliberative democracy, constitutional rights, platform governance, digital commons, public service media, AI, surveillance and the political economy of Big Tech. It argues that democracy in the digital age can only survive if participatory and deliberative digital structures are institutionally combined with constitutional safeguards, public ownership, democratic regulation and the defence of human rights. By bringing together debates on digital democracy, authoritarianism, political economy and digital futures, the paper offers both a critical diagnosis of the contemporary digital condition and a normative vision of democratic alternatives in the age of AI and platform capitalism."}],"date_created":"2026-07-28T18:09:19Z","type":"journal_article","department":[{"_id":"136"},{"_id":"11"}],"status":"public","has_accepted_license":"1","publisher":"Wiley","_id":"66611","user_id":"21863","volume":18,"citation":{"mla":"Fuchs, Christian, et al. “Digital Futures Between Participatory Digital Democracy and Participatory Digital Fascism.” Policy & Internet, vol.
Laser & Photonics Reviews, e71686, Wiley, 2026, doi:10.1002/lpor.71686.","bibtex":"@article{Devaraj_Kwak_Kim_Sung_Lee_Zentgraf_Kim_2026, title={Spatially Uniform and Defect‐Tolerant Plasmonic Responses in 3D Printed Gold Nanoparticle Assemblies}, DOI={10.1002/lpor.71686}, number={e71686}, journal={Laser & Photonics Reviews}, publisher={Wiley}, author={Devaraj, Vasanthan and Kwak, Sunghyun and Kim, Hyeongjip and Sung, Sang‐Keun and Lee, Jong‐Min and Zentgraf, Thomas and Kim, Won‐Geun}, year={2026} }","ama":"Devaraj V, Kwak S, Kim H, et al. Here, we present a systematic optical investigation of large‐scale 3D AuNP assemblies fabricated via meniscus‐guided assembly, focusing on the reproducibility, spatial uniformity, and mode evolution of their plasmonic responses. Spatially‐resolved dark‐field scattering measurements reveal that high‐aspect‐ratio AuNP pillars exhibit uniform scattering spectra along their height and across different pillars, despite variations in geometry and structure. Electromagnetic simulations suggest that this robustness arises from a collective many‐particle plasmonic response that remains optically active despite structural perturbations. The corresponding near‐field and surface‐charge distributions remain spatially distributed under representative structural perturbations, consistent with volumetric averaging across the three‐dimensional assembly. Building on this robust platform, we introduce compositional modulation through a core–satellite architecture by incorporating smaller AuNPs. This yields a composition‐dependent spectral redistribution, including the emergence of an additional long‐wavelength spectral feature in the core–satellite assemblies. Wavelength‐dependent surface‐enhanced Raman scattering measurements reveal contrasting responses under 633 and 785 nm excitation, reflecting redistribution of local plasmonic coupling pathways. These results provide process‐enabled guidelines for using meniscus‐guided 3D‐nanoprinting to realize robust nanoparticle assemblies.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Laser & Photonics Reviews","doi":"10.1002/lpor.71686","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"article_number":"e71686","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/lpor.71686"}],"article_type":"original","publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2026-08-03T06:45:01Z","publication_identifier":{"issn":["1863-8880","1863-8899"]},"author":[{"full_name":"Devaraj, Vasanthan","last_name":"Devaraj","first_name":"Vasanthan","id":"103814"},{"full_name":"Kwak, Sunghyun","last_name":"Kwak","first_name":"Sunghyun"},{"last_name":"Kim","first_name":"Hyeongjip","full_name":"Kim, Hyeongjip"},{"full_name":"Sung, Sang‐Keun","last_name":"Sung","first_name":"Sang‐Keun"},{"full_name":"Lee, Jong‐Min","last_name":"Lee","first_name":"Jong‐Min"},{"id":"30525","first_name":"Thomas","last_name":"Zentgraf","orcid":"0000-0002-8662-1101","full_name":"Zentgraf, Thomas"},{"full_name":"Kim, Won‐Geun","last_name":"Kim","first_name":"Won‐Geun"}],"year":"2026","title":"Spatially Uniform and Defect‐Tolerant Plasmonic Responses in 3D Printed Gold Nanoparticle Assemblies"},{"title":"“The city isn’t uploading me to TikTok”: Exploring Privacy Attitudes towards Data Collection in Urban Public Spaces","year":"2026","author":[{"full_name":"Todt, Julian","first_name":"Julian","last_name":"Todt"},{"full_name":"Kablo, Emiram","last_name":"Kablo","first_name":"Emiram","id":"46433"},{"last_name":"Morsbach","first_name":"Felix","full_name":"Morsbach, Felix"},{"first_name":"Patricia","last_name":"Arias Cabarcos","full_name":"Arias Cabarcos, Patricia","id":"92804"},{"full_name":"Strufe, Thorsten","first_name":"Thorsten","last_name":"Strufe"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["2299-0984"]},"date_updated":"2026-08-03T10:49:58Z","publication_status":"published","intvolume":" 2026","main_file_link":[{"url":"https://petsymposium.org/popets/2026/popets-2026-0108.php","open_access":"1"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"10.56553/popets-2026-0108","publication":"Proceedings on Privacy Enhancing Technologies","issue":"4","abstract":[{"text":"Smart cities promise safer streets, smoother traffic, and more efficient services, enabled by dense networks of urban sensors. Yet this infrastructure, often unnoticed by citizens, introduces pervasive privacy risks, from tracking, profiling, and sensitive inferences to subtle forms of self-censorship. Despite widespread deployment, little is known about how the public understands and perceives these sensing systems. To address this gap, we present an intervention based user study (n = 172) in which participants are exposed to data collection by six urban sensors, including cameras and alternative technologies commonly framed as privacy-preserving. Participants encounter either the sensors alone or sensors accompanied by real-time data visualizations. Our results reveal widespread misunderstanding of some sensors (radar, LiDAR, Wi-Fi, depth, and thermal imaging sensors), particularly their capacity for identification and for attribute inferences such as gender or age. We also identify persistent misconceptions, including the belief that Wi-Fi poses privacy risks only when users connect to public networks. While making sensors visible and visualizing collected data improves privacy awareness, these measures alone are not enough for citizens to understand the actual risks of urban sensing. We derive recommendations for privacy-respecting smart city environments grounded in citizens’ informational needs and expectations.","lang":"eng"}],"date_created":"2026-08-03T10:46:58Z","type":"journal_article","department":[{"_id":"679"}],"status":"public","page":"7-35","_id":"66638","publisher":"Privacy Enhancing Technologies Symposium Advisory Board","user_id":"46433","volume":2026,"citation":{"mla":"Todt, Julian, et al. “‘The City Isn’t Uploading Me to TikTok’: Exploring Privacy Attitudes towards Data Collection in Urban Public Spaces.” Proceedings on Privacy Enhancing Technologies, vol. 2026, no. 4, Privacy Enhancing Technologies Symposium Advisory Board, 2026, pp. 7–35, doi:10.56553/popets-2026-0108.","bibtex":"@article{Todt_Kablo_Morsbach_Arias Cabarcos_Strufe_2026, title={“The city isn’t uploading me to TikTok”: Exploring Privacy Attitudes towards Data Collection in Urban Public Spaces}, volume={2026}, DOI={10.56553/popets-2026-0108}, number={4}, journal={Proceedings on Privacy Enhancing Technologies}, publisher={Privacy Enhancing Technologies Symposium Advisory Board}, author={Todt, Julian and Kablo, Emiram and Morsbach, Felix and Arias Cabarcos, Patricia and Strufe, Thorsten}, year={2026}, pages={7–35} }","ama":"Todt J, Kablo E, Morsbach F, Arias Cabarcos P, Strufe T. “The city isn’t uploading me to TikTok”: Exploring Privacy Attitudes towards Data Collection in Urban Public Spaces. Proceedings on Privacy Enhancing Technologies. 2026;2026(4):7-35. doi:10.56553/popets-2026-0108","ieee":"J. As programmable digital architectures, they both shape and are shaped by teachers’ and students’ practices. Building on two Action Research projects in German schools, the article concentrates on the reproduction of inequality within platformized classrooms. It uses the focus point of translation software usage to explore inscriptions into digital architectures. Analysing breakdowns of translation software usage among students who speak German as a second/foreign language, the article focuses on inscribed power dynamics within translation software, the mismatch between students’ practices and the imagined user, and the discrepancy between software logics and the educational setting. Discussing teachers’ invisible work, care and belonging in platformized education settings, the article highlights the epistemic inscriptions within technology. It describes how dataveillance and testing break down when students use translation software, thereby highlighting teachers’ shift towards creating a collective understanding. Lastly, the article discusses teachers’ autonomy within post-platform education by highlighting the limitations of currently available software products and software production.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Learning, Media and Technology","type":"journal_article","keyword":["Intersectionality","platform studies","action research","post-platform education","breakdowns","translation software","classroom reserach"],"department":[{"_id":"121"},{"_id":"477"}],"date_created":"2026-08-03T06:58:34Z","date_updated":"2026-08-03T07:06:53Z","publication_status":"published","year":"2026","title":"Inscription of power dynamics in platformized classrooms.
