This has led to the emergence of a field called Social XAI, which is concerned with understanding how explanations are actively shaped in the interaction between a human user and an AI system. Recognizing this turn in XAI toward making XAI systems more “social” by providing explanations that focus on human information needs and incorporating insights from human–human explanatory interactions, in this paper we provide a formal foundation for Social XAI. We do so by proposing novel ontological accounts of the key terms used in Social XAI based on Basic Formal Ontology (BFO). Specifically, we provide novel ontological accounts for explanandum, explanans, understanding, explanation, explainer, explainee, and context. In doing so, we discuss multifaceted entities in Social XAI (having both continuant and occurrent facets; e.g., explanation) and the relationship between understanding and explanation. Additionally, we propose solutions to seemingly paradoxical views on some terms (e.g., social constructivist vs. individual constructivist perspective on explanandum)."}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"quality_controlled":"1","year":"2025","publisher":"IOS Press","date_created":"2025-09-08T14:00:45Z","title":"A BFO-based ontological analysis of entities in Social XAI"},{"year":"2025","citation":{"ama":"Muschalik M, Fumagalli F, Frazzetto P, et al. Since understanding\r\ndepends on the explainee's background and needs, recent research focused on\r\nco-constructive explanation dialogues, where an explainer continuously monitors\r\nthe explainee's understanding and adapts their explanations dynamically. We\r\ninvestigate the ability of large language models (LLMs) to engage as explainers\r\nin co-constructive explanation dialogues. In particular, we present a user\r\nstudy in which explainees interact with an LLM in two settings, one of which\r\ninvolves the LLM being instructed to explain a topic co-constructively. We\r\nevaluate the explainees' understanding before and after the dialogue, as well\r\nas their perception of the LLMs' co-constructive behavior. Our results suggest\r\nthat LLMs show some co-constructive behaviors, such as asking verification\r\nquestions, that foster the explainees' engagement and can improve understanding\r\nof a topic. However, their ability to effectively monitor the current\r\nunderstanding and scaffold the explanations accordingly remains limited.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Proceedings of the 26th Annual Meeting of the Special Interest Group on Discourse and Dialogue","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"external_id":{"arxiv":["2504.18483"]},"year":"2025","title":"Investigating Co-Constructive Behavior of Large Language Models in Explanation Dialogues","date_created":"2025-09-11T16:11:17Z","publisher":"Association for Computational Linguistics","status":"public","type":"conference","user_id":"84035","department":[{"_id":"660"}],"project":[{"name":"TRR 318: Project Area INF","_id":"118"},{"name":"TRR 318; TP B01: Ein dialogbasierter Ansatz zur Erklärung von Modellen des maschinellen Lernens","_id":"121"},{"name":"TRR 318; TP C04: Metaphern als Werkzeug des Erklärens","_id":"127"},{"name":"TRR 318 - Subproject B3","_id":"122"},{"_id":"119","name":"TRR 318 - Project Area Ö"},{"_id":"114","name":"TRR 318; TP A04: Integration des technischen Modells in das Partnermodell bei der Erklärung von digitalen Artefakten"}],"_id":"61234","citation":{"chicago":"Fichtel, Leandra, Maximilian Spliethöver, Eyke Hüllermeier, Patricia Jimenez, Nils Klowait, Stefan Kopp, Axel-Cyrille Ngonga Ngomo, et al. “Investigating Co-Constructive Behavior of Large Language Models in  Explanation Dialogues.” In <i>Proceedings of the 26th Annual Meeting of the Special Interest Group on Discourse and Dialogue</i>. However, the success of techniques depends on various parameters, such as the task, language model, and context provided. Finding an effective prompt is, therefore, often a trial-and-error process. Most existing approaches to automatic prompting aim to optimize individual techniques instead of compositions of techniques and their dependence on the input. To fill this gap, we propose an adaptive prompting approach that predicts the optimal prompt composition ad-hoc for a given input. We apply our approach to social bias detection, a highly context-dependent task that requires semantic understanding. We evaluate it with three large language models on three datasets, comparing compositions to individual techniques and other baselines. The results underline the importance of finding an effective prompt composition. Our approach robustly ensures high detection performance, and is best in several settings. Moreover, first experiments on other tasks support its generalizability."}],"publication":"Proceedings of the 2025 Conference of the Nations of the Americas Chapter of the Association for Computational Linguistics: Human Language Technologies (Volume 1: Long Papers)","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://aclanthology.org/2025.naacl-long.122/"}],"date_updated":"2025-09-12T09:51:30Z","oa":"1","author":[{"first_name":"Maximilian","full_name":"Spliethöver, Maximilian","id":"84035","orcid":"0000-0003-4364-1409","last_name":"Spliethöver"},{"first_name":"Tim","last_name":"Knebler","full_name":"Knebler, Tim"},{"last_name":"Fumagalli","full_name":"Fumagalli, Fabian","id":"93420","first_name":"Fabian"},{"first_name":"Maximilian","full_name":"Muschalik, Maximilian","last_name":"Muschalik"},{"first_name":"Barbara","last_name":"Hammer","full_name":"Hammer, Barbara"},{"full_name":"Hüllermeier, Eyke","id":"48129","last_name":"Hüllermeier","first_name":"Eyke"},{"last_name":"Wachsmuth","id":"3900","full_name":"Wachsmuth, Henning","first_name":"Henning"}],"place":"Albuquerque, New Mexico","page":"2421–2449","citation":{"ieee":"M. Application-grounded evaluations are needed to better evaluate methods for improving collaboration but often require domain experts, making studies costly and limiting their generalizability. Current evaluation methods are constrained by limited public datasets and reliance on proxy tasks. To address these challenges, we propose an application-grounded framework for large-scale, online evaluations of vision-based decision-making tasks. The framework introduces Blockies, a parametric approach for generating datasets of simulated diagnostic tasks, offering control over the traits and biases in the data used to train real-world models. These tasks are designed to be easy to learn but difficult to master, enabling participation by non-experts. The framework also incorporates storytelling and monetary incentives to manipulate perceived task stakes. An initial empirical study demonstrated that the high-stakes condition significantly reduced healthy distrust of AI, despite longer decision-making times. These findings underscore the importance of perceived stakes in fostering healthy distrust and demonstrate the framework's potential for scalable evaluation of high-stakes Human-AI collaboration. Building on theories of enactive cognition and sensorimotor contingency theory, we experimentally manipulated action sequences (action history) to create either simple or rich “situational models,” and investigated how these models interact with attention and reflect in linguistic processes during human–robot interaction. Participants (N = 30) engaged in a controlled object placement task with a humanoid robot, where the action (manner) information was either provided or omitted. The omission elicited repair behaviors in participants that were in focus of our investigation. For rich models (competing action possibilities) participants demonstrated: a) increased attentional reorientation, reflecting active engagement with the situational model b) preference for restricted repairs, targeting the specific source of trouble in action selection. Conversely, a simple situational model led to more generalized attention patterns and open repair strategies, suggesting weaker constraints on internal processing. These findings highlight how situational structures emerge externally to scaffold internal cognitive processes, with action histories serving as a crucial context for the interface between perception, action, and language. We discuss how to implement such a tight loop in the assistance of a system.","lang":"eng"}],"keyword":["Attention","Action","Repairs","Task model","HRI","Eyemovement"],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"quality_controlled":"1","year":"2025","date_created":"2025-09-24T12:32:52Z","title":"Manners Matter: Action history guides attention and repair choices during interaction","type":"conference","status":"public","project":[{"_id":"115","name":"TRR 318; TP A05: Echtzeitmessung der Aufmerksamkeit im Mensch-Roboter-Erklärdialog"}],"_id":"61432","user_id":"91018","department":[{"_id":"749"},{"_id":"660"}],"publication_status":"published","place":" Prague","citation":{"short":"A. In this interaction, language mediated eye movements can be studied as the dialogue unfolds between human and a robot. \r\nTraditionally, real-time linguistic processes are studied using visual world paradigms (VWP), where either the comprehension or the production tasks are implemented on screens for controlled investigations. Going beyond these traditional and unidirectional approach, we bring together production--comprehension loop with the help of a humanoid robot to preserve interactivity in an ecologically valid yet controlled setup. We discuss the potential of such setups for designing and evaluating findings from language--vision interplay in psycholinguistics. The goal of providing or seeking explanations is to achieve (better) ‘understanding’ on the part of the explainee. However, what it means to ‘understand’ is still not clearly defined, and the concept itself is rarely the subject of scientific investigation. This conceptual article aims to present a model of forms of understanding for XAI-explanations and beyond. From an interdisciplinary perspective bringing together computer science, linguistics, sociology, philosophy and psychology, a definition of understanding and its forms, assessment, and dynamics during the process of giving everyday explanations are explored. Two types of understanding are considered as possible outcomes of explanations, namely enabledness, ‘knowing how’ to do or decide something, and comprehension, ‘knowing that’ – both in different degrees (from shallow to deep). Explanations regularly start with shallow understanding in a specific domain and can lead to deep comprehension and enabledness of the explanandum, which we see as a prerequisite for human users to gain agency. In this process, the increase of comprehension and enabledness are highly interdependent. Against the background of this systematization, special challenges of understanding in XAI are discussed.","lang":"eng"}],"author":[{"last_name":"Buschmeier","orcid":"0000-0002-9613-5713","id":"76456","full_name":"Buschmeier, Hendrik","first_name":"Hendrik"},{"full_name":"Buhl, Heike M.","id":"27152","last_name":"Buhl","first_name":"Heike M."},{"full_name":"Kern, Friederike","last_name":"Kern","first_name":"Friederike"},{"id":"57578","full_name":"Grimminger, Angela","last_name":"Grimminger","first_name":"Angela"},{"first_name":"Helen","full_name":"Beierling, Helen","id":"50995","last_name":"Beierling"},{"orcid":"0000-0002-9997-9241","last_name":"Fisher","full_name":"Fisher, Josephine Beryl","id":"56345","first_name":"Josephine Beryl"},{"first_name":"André","full_name":"Groß, André","id":"93405","last_name":"Groß","orcid":"0000-0002-9593-7220"},{"first_name":"Ilona","last_name":"Horwath","id":"68836","full_name":"Horwath, Ilona"},{"first_name":"Nils","full_name":"Klowait, Nils","id":"98454","orcid":"0000-0002-7347-099X","last_name":"Klowait"},{"first_name":"Stefan Teodorov","last_name":"Lazarov","orcid":"0009-0009-0892-9483","full_name":"Lazarov, Stefan Teodorov","id":"90345"},{"first_name":"Michael","last_name":"Lenke","full_name":"Lenke, Michael"},{"first_name":"Vivien","full_name":"Lohmer, Vivien","last_name":"Lohmer"},{"first_name":"Katharina","last_name":"Rohlfing","orcid":"0000-0002-5676-8233","full_name":"Rohlfing, Katharina","id":"50352"},{"full_name":"Scharlau, Ingrid","id":"451","last_name":"Scharlau","orcid":"0000-0003-2364-9489","first_name":"Ingrid"},{"first_name":"Amit","id":"91018","full_name":"Singh, Amit","orcid":"0000-0002-7789-1521","last_name":"Singh"},{"first_name":"Lutz","id":"37320","full_name":"Terfloth, Lutz","last_name":"Terfloth"},{"last_name":"Vollmer","id":"86589","full_name":"Vollmer, Anna-Lisa","first_name":"Anna-Lisa"},{"first_name":"Yu","full_name":"Wang, Yu","last_name":"Wang"},{"full_name":"Wilmes, Annedore","last_name":"Wilmes","first_name":"Annedore"},{"full_name":"Wrede, Britta","last_name":"Wrede","first_name":"Britta"}],"volume":94,"date_updated":"2025-12-05T15:32:25Z","oa":"1","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1389041725000993?via%3Dihub"}],"doi":"10.1016/j.cogsys.2025.101419","publication_status":"published","has_accepted_license":"1","citation":{"ama":"Buschmeier H, Buhl HM, Kern F, et al. These\r\ngestures are also observed in explanatory contexts. However, the impact of\r\ngestures on explanations provided by virtual agents remains underexplored. A\r\nuser study was carried out to investigate how different types of gestures\r\ninfluence perceived interaction quality and listener understanding. This study\r\naddresses the effect of gestures in explanation by developing an embodied\r\nvirtual explainer integrating both beat gestures and iconic gestures to enhance\r\nits automatically generated verbal explanations. Our model combines beat\r\ngestures generated by a learned speech-driven synthesis module with manually\r\ncaptured iconic gestures, supporting the agent's verbal expressions about the\r\nboard game Quarto! as an explanation scenario. Findings indicate that neither\r\nthe use of iconic gestures alone nor their combination with beat gestures\r\noutperforms the baseline or beat-only conditions in terms of understanding.\r\nNonetheless, compared to prior research, the embodied agent significantly\r\nenhances understanding.","lang":"eng"}],"status":"public","external_id":{"arxiv":["2406.12544"]},"_id":"55154","project":[{"grant_number":"438445824","name":"TRR 318 - A01: TRR 318 - Adaptives Erklären (Teilprojekt A01)","_id":"111"}],"department":[{"_id":"660"}],"user_id":"91982","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"year":"2024","citation":{"chicago":"Robrecht, Amelie, Hendric Voss, Lisa Gottschalk, and Stefan Kopp. “Integrating Representational Gestures into Automatically Generated  Embodied Explanations and Its Effects on Understanding and Interaction  Quality.” <i>ArXiv:2406.12544</i>, 2024.","ieee":"A.
