  abstract     = {{When signing digital documents, users often insert scanned or digitized handwritten signatures, which provide no assurance of a document’s authenticity and integrity. Cryptographic signatures offer such guarantees, but are rarely adopted due to persistent usability challenges. This paper explores the potential of digital identity wallets for securely and intuitively signing documents with verified personal data. To this end, we developed IdentitySign, an open-source prototype application, and evaluated it through a user study (N=74). Our results indicate good usability but also reveal potential pitfalls for this and similar wallet-based signature applications, such as unjustified trust in documents with signatures that are cryptographically valid but signed by the wrong signer. We provide guidelines and insights for creating user-centric, secure, and trustworthy digital signage applications using identity wallets.}},

  abstract     = {{In the last decade, there has been increasing interest in allowing users to understand how the predictions of machine-learned models come about, thus increasing transparency and empowering users to understand and potentially contest those decisions.Dialogue-based approaches, in contrast to traditional one-shot eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) methods, facilitate interactive, in-depth exploration through multi-turn dialogues, simulating expert conversations. This paper reviews the current state of dialogue-based XAI, presenting a systematic review of 1,339 publications, narrowed down to 14 based on inclusion criteria. We explore theoretical foundations of the systems, propose key dimensions along which different solutions to dialogue-based XAI differ, and identify key use cases, target audiences, system components, and the types of supported queries and responses. Furthermore, we investigate the current paradigms by which systems are evaluated and highlight their key limitations. Key findings include identifying the main use cases, objectives, and audiences targeted by dialogue-based XAI methods, and summarize the main types of questions and information needs. Beyond discussing avenues for future work, we present a meta-architecture for these systems from existing literature and outlined prevalent theoretical frameworks.}},

  abstract     = {{HTTPS composes large parts of today’s Internet traffic and has long been subject to censorship efforts in different countries. While censors analyze the Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol to block encrypted HTTP traffic, censorship circumvention efforts have primarily focused on other protocols such as TCP. In this paper, we hypothesize that the TLS protocol offers previously unseen opportunities for censorship circumvention techniques. We tested our hypothesis by proposing possible censorship circumvention techniques that act on the TLS protocol. To validate the effectiveness of these techniques, we evaluate their acceptance by popular TLS servers and successfully demonstrate that these techniques can circumvent censors in China and Iran. In our evaluations, we discovered 38—partially standard-compliant—distinct censorship circumvention techniques, which we could group into 11 unique categories. Additionally, we provide novel insights into how China censors TLS traffic by presenting evidence of at least three distinct censorship appliances. We suspect that other parts of China’s censorship apparatus and other censors exhibit similar structures and advocate future censorship research to anticipate them. With this work, we hope to aid people affected by censorship and stimulate further
research into censorship circumvention using cryptographic protocols.}},

  abstract     = {{Heutzutage sind datengetriebene digitale Artefakte aus unserem Alltag nicht mehr wegzudenken. Bei der Interaktion mit datengetriebenen Artefakten spielen Daten eine zentrale Rolle, unter anderem persönliche Daten von Schüler:innen, die solche Systeme nutzen. Aus der Perspektive informatischer Bildung besteht ein wichtiges Ziel darin, Schüler:innen zu befähigen, datengetriebene digitale Artefakte aus ihrem Alltag zu verstehen, denen gegenüber informierte und reflektierte Positionen einzunehmen und die digitale Welt aktiv mitzugestalten. Das setzt etwa voraus, dass Schüler:innen das Gelernte aus dem Informatikunterricht in ihren alltäglichen Interaktionen mit datengetriebenen digitalen Artefakten anwenden können, um sich mit diesen Artefakten und der Rolle von Daten auseinanderzusetzen und darauf aufbauend selbstbestimmt, mündig und verantwortungsvoll zu handeln. Für diese Ziele informatischer Bildung wird in dieser Arbeit das fachdidaktische Konzept Datenbewusstsein entwickelt und evaluiert. Datenbewusstsein stellt Schüler:innen ein sogenanntes Erklärmodell als Zugang zur datengetriebenen Welt bereit und zielt darauf ab, dass sie damit ihre eigene Rolle in Interaktionen mit datengetriebenen digitales Artefakten sowie die Rolle von Daten darin wahrnehmen, verstehen und reflektieren können. Dadurch soll Datenbewusstsein zu einer selbstbestimmten, mündigen und verantwortungsvollen Handlungsfähigkeit in einer datengetriebenen Welt beitragen. Die Entwicklung und Evaluation des Konzepts orientiert sich am Design-Based Research Ansatz, wofür aus informatikdidaktischer Perspektive ein eigenes Vorgehensmodell entwickelt wurde. Das Forschungsvorhaben hat zwei übergeordnete Ziele: Erstens soll eine theoretische Konzeption von Datenbewusstsein für informatische Bildung und zweitens ein didaktischer Ansatz zur Förderung von Datenbewusstsein entwickelt werden. In drei Zyklen wird die Förderung von Datenbewusstsein im Informatikunterricht mithilfe von Unterrichtsinterventionen empirisch untersucht. Schwerpunkte liegen dabei unter anderem auf dem Verständnis der Schüler:innen von der Rolle von Daten in datengetriebenen digitalen Artefakten, der Förderung ihrer Auseinandersetzung mit solchen digitalen Artefakten im Alltag sowie dem Beitrag zur Entwicklung ihrer Handlungsfähigkeit. Die Hauptergebnisse dieser Arbeit liegen in der Konzeption von Datenbewusstsein sowie im entwickelten didaktischen Ansatz zum Lernen von Erklärmodellen im Informatikunterricht. Danach lernen Schüler:innen im Unterricht ein Erklärmodell für Datenbewusstsein und wenden es auf alltägliche Beispiele für datengetriebene digitale Artefakte an. Die empirischen Ergebnisse werden zeigen, dass Schüler:innen das Erklärmodell verstehen, sie darin eine subjektive Bedeutsamkeit für ihren Alltag erkennen und es ihre Handlungsfähigkeit in alltäglichen Situationen mit datengetriebenen digitalen Artefakten fördern kann.}},
