This requires knowledge of the frictional power distribution in the tire contact patch, which is the basis for calculating tire wear using a wear law. Usually, only 3D structural tire models can generate such distributed contact results. However, they involve high computational costs and cannot be used for comprehensive optimization of a vehicle’s suspension system with respect to tire wear characteristics. Hence, this contribution presents a methodology on how to accelerate the prediction of the frictional power distribution using two components: The structural tire model is replaced by an empirical tire model that on its own is not able to generate distributed contact results. Therefore, an artificial neural network is trained to predict the desired contact results from the kinematic quantities calculated by the empirical tire model. In the initial training phase, both components are fitted to data generated by the original complex tire model. After training, the empirical tire model can replace the structural tire model in vehicle simulations, resulting in significantly shorter calculation times. The simulation results are fed into the artificial neural network, which predicts the frictional power distributions over the tire width with negligible additional effort. Overall, the methodology reduces calculation time for the prediction of tire wear based on virtual test drives to approximately 25% of the time needed when using structural tire models."}],"_id":"58556","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"publisher":"The Tire Society","user_id":"77313","doi":"https://doi.org/10.2346/TST-24-009","title":"Prediction of the Frictional Power Distribution in the Tire Contact Patch Based on an Empirical Tire Model and an Artificial Neural Network","status":"public","year":"2025","author":[{"first_name":"Lars","orcid":"0000-0002-2938-5616","last_name":"Muth","full_name":"Muth, Lars","id":"77313"},{"first_name":"Raphael","last_name":"Zharia","full_name":"Zharia, Raphael"},{"full_name":"Sahin, Hürkan","last_name":"Sahin","first_name":"Hürkan"},{"id":"21220","full_name":"Sextro, Walter","last_name":"Sextro","first_name":"Walter"}],"publication_status":"epub_ahead","date_updated":"2025-02-27T19:53:09Z","article_type":"original"},{"citation":{"mla":"Neumann, Maximilian, et al. “Towards Reliable HETP Values: Lessons Learned from Standardized Separation Efficiency Measurements.” Separation and Purification Technology, vol. 361, 131436, Elsevier BV, 2025, doi:10.1016/j.seppur.2025.131436.","apa":"Neumann, M., Xia, M., Pöschmann, R., Merkel, A., Staud, R., Schneider, H., Ehlert, T., Paschold, J., Müller, S., Harding, L.-S., Neukäufer, J., Hiller, C., Ausner, I., Gäbler, A., Chromik, R., Maćkowiak, J., Maćkowiak, J., Sola Cervera, J. Der Übergangswiderstand wird von mehreren Faktoren beeinflusst (z. Lightweight design is one of the central topics of the automotive industry since reducing mass can save emissions over the entire life cycle of a component. Nowadays, vehicle structures usually consist of a multi-material design, which poses the additional challenge of joining these different materials. Mechanical joining is the most common way of joining different types of materials. Cast aluminium alloys of the AlSi system have a low ductility, which causes cracks during the mechanical joining process in the joint. One research approach is to achieve a fine microstructure by influencing the solidification rate since this results in increased mechanical properties, specifically the elongation at fracture and yield strength. A very fine microstructure can be achieved by utilizing Twin-roll casting (TRC) which is a continuous casting process in which high solidification rates of more than 100 K/s occur. In this study, the hypoeutectic cast aluminium alloy AlSi9 is processed in the TRC process using copper rollers. The cast strips are investigated regarding the microstructure-property correlation. A variation of the roller materials and cooling conditions allows for an increase in the solidification rate, whereby a defined, fine microstructure can be achieved, which enhances the mechanical properties of the hypoeutectic aluminium casting alloys.
","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Materials Research Proceedings","type":"conference","department":[{"_id":"9"},{"_id":"158"}],"date_created":"2025-03-26T15:15:15Z","status":"public","user_id":"48411","volume":52,"_id":"59154","publisher":"Materials Research Forum LLC","quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"mla":"Neuser, Moritz, et al. “Processing of the Hypoeutectic AlSi9 Alloy with Twin-Roll Casting by Using Copper Shells.” Materials Research Proceedings, vol. 52, Materials Research Forum LLC, 2025, doi:10.21741/9781644903551-26.","ama":"Neuser M, Hoyer K-P, Schaper M. Twin-Roll-Casting (TRC) is an energy- and cost-efficient process to produce near-net-shape aluminum strips. Due to the high affinity of molten aluminum to steel surfaces, those rollers show signs of wear throughout the rolling campaign. This leads to the necessity of restoring the worn surfaces to suitable parameters. The easiest way is to grind the surface till all superficial defects are omitted. However, the thickness of the roller is not endless, therefore the rollers must be replaced after a certain amount of surface reconditioning. This ultimately leads to the non-usability of the roller. PCM are materials whose phase change characteristics during melting and solidification are utilized for heating and cooling purposes. The theoretical foundations of heat transfer problems involving phase change, along with the relevant numerical solution methods, are discussed. A phase change model is presented, which was validated against analytical solutions and applied in the case studies. For both case studies, a review of the state of the art is provided, followed by the formulation of specific research problems. The first case study investigated PCM-enhanced photovoltaic modules, while the second focused on packed bed latent heat storages (PBLHS) utilizing non-spherical PCM capsules. Thermal models were developed for both systems and validated with good accuracy against experimental data. These models were employed in parameter studies to identify optimized system configurations. The presented results demonstrate that a PCM heat sink with sufficient thickness and thermal conductivity can significantly improve the efficiency and lifespan of photovoltaic modules. Furthermore, PCM capsules with both high packing density and surface area increase the volume-specific storage capacity and thermal power output of PBLHS.","lang":"eng"}],"supervisor":[{"id":"665","first_name":"Eugeny","last_name":"Kenig","full_name":"Kenig, Eugeny"}],"citation":{"ama":"Grabo M. Modeling and Optimization of Energy System Components Equipped with Phase Change Materials.; 2025. doi:10.17619/UNIPB/1-2199","bibtex":"@book{Grabo_2025, place={Paderborn}, title={Modeling and optimization of energy system components equipped with phase change materials}, DOI={10.17619/UNIPB/1-2199}, author={Grabo, Matti}, year={2025} }","mla":"Grabo, Matti. Modeling and Optimization of Energy System Components Equipped with Phase Change Materials. 2025, doi:10.17619/UNIPB/1-2199.","chicago":"Grabo, Matti. Modeling and Optimization of Energy System Components Equipped with Phase Change Materials. At the same time, various industries are increasingly trending towards multi-material systems consisting of parts with varying geometric and mechanical properties. Due to the varying properties, rigid mechanical joining processes require sampling procedures and periodic changes of tool components or auxiliary joining parts. Consequently, research is focusing on versatile mechanical joining processes that allow increased control by modifying the process parameters. Two processes based on self-piercing riveting can achieve a significant increase in process influence possibilities through a multi-linear actuator as versatile self-piercing riveting (V-SPR) and a tumbling superimposed actuator as tumbling self-piercing riveting (T-SPR). Initial research into V-SPR has shown that this process can be used to achieve a higher variation in overall package thickness by adapting the rivet geometry and using multiple linear actuators. The T-SPR process also enables increased material flow control by means of targeted compression of the rivet using the tumbling actuator, thereby extending the range of joints that can be manufactured. Based on these two processes, a combination of the two mechanisms of action is to be developed.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"MATEC Web of Conferences","type":"journal_article","department":[{"_id":"43"},{"_id":"157"}],"date_created":"2025-06-27T08:27:42Z","date_updated":"2025-06-27T08:34:46Z","publication_status":"published","intvolume":" 408","year":"2025","title":"Integration of multiple-linear and tumbling kinematics into self-piercing riveting","publication_identifier":{"issn":["2261-236X"]},"author":[{"last_name":"Holtkamp","first_name":"Pia Katharina","full_name":"Holtkamp, Pia Katharina","id":"44935"},{"first_name":"Simon","last_name":"Wituschek","full_name":"Wituschek, Simon","id":"83423"},{"full_name":"Lechner, Michael","first_name":"Michael","last_name":"Lechner"},{"full_name":"Meschut, Gerson","orcid":"0000-0002-2763-1246","last_name":"Meschut","first_name":"Gerson","id":"32056"}],"doi":"10.1051/matecconf/202540801069","article_number":"01069","language":[{"iso":"eng"}]},{"type":"conference","department":[{"_id":"43"},{"_id":"157"}],"date_created":"2025-06-27T07:56:32Z","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"Abstract. Mechanical joints are traditionally analyzed through destructive micrograph analysis, which may compromise internal geometry and morphology, as evidenced by radial cracks in semi-tubular self-pierce riveting. In contrast, industrial X-ray computed tomography (XCT) offers a non-destructive method for component diagnosis, providing volumetric insights without damaging the sample and enabling dimensional measurement. The DFG-funded Collaborative Research Center TRR 285 is exploring XCT's application in assessing mechanical joinability across various joining processes and materials, particularly in multi-material systems like steel-aluminum joints. XCT faces challenges in accurately capturing multi-material compositions, leading to artifacts that complicate interface detection. In the corporate context, knowledge management is an established field of research and practice that aims to improve efficiency and competitiveness. A Germany-wide survey of 577 firefighters revealed that digital administrative support is already widespread, but that knowledge is primarily distributed by email, chat, verbally or via paper. The participants seek for a knowledge management solution that provides support during incients, training, as well as administrative work.Based on the survey and a systematic literature review, the need for action was identified. The areas of application and framework conditions, which are reflected in the requirements for a knowledge management system, are based on this. The implementation concept describes the system architecture of the solution, which is based on an open-source wiki with suitable extensions. The central element is the ability to share knowledge across organizational boundaries.
