[{"abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"Tacit knowledge is particularly valuable in product engineering. Experiences reside in minds of employees and are not systematically documented but could have a significant influence on sustainable product engineering. Existing approaches do not offer sufficient support for harnessing technical tacit knowledge regarding sustainable product engineering. In this paper a three-step method is presented: The method contains knowledge acquisition, requirements extraction und requirements validation for quality assurance. Acquisition is performed by support artifacts like interview guidelines. Extraction is supported by Artificial Intelligence, converting statements into requirements. These requirements are validated using a specific questionnaire. The developed approach is applied in a funded project of the European Union (EU) with automotive industry partners. The method supports product engineers to collect tacit knowledge from experienced employees, transform unsystematic knowledge into standardized technical requirements and validate them. Application of this method enables creation of validated requirements that can be applied throughout the company and are not exclusively dependent on a single employee."}],"publication":"1st International Symposium: March 24 – 26, 2026, Heinz Nixdorf Institute, Paderborn University","department":[{"_id":"152"}],"keyword":["Tacit knowledge","Sustainability","Product Engineering","Artificial Intelligence"],"type":"conference","date_created":"2026-07-20T13:16:49Z","intvolume":" 1","publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2026-08-13T09:02:56Z","author":[{"id":"98210","first_name":"Johanna","last_name":"Mansheim","full_name":"Mansheim, Johanna"},{"id":"47565","last_name":"Gräßler","first_name":"Iris","orcid":"0000-0001-5765-971X","full_name":"Gräßler, Iris"},{"full_name":"Pfeifer, Jan Niklas","first_name":"Jan Niklas","last_name":"Pfeifer","id":"62841"}],"year":"2026","title":"Harnessing tacit Knowledge from Sustainable Product Engineering through Artificial Intelligence","doi":"10.17619/UNIPB/1-2639","series_title":"International Symposium on Hybrid Intelligence in Product and Production Engineering","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"ieee":"J. A substantial share of a product’s environmental performance is determined during engineering. Early assessments rely on generic data, which is gradually replaced by more concrete simulation and primary data as product maturity increases. The effective use of engineering simulation models for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) therefore remains a central challenge under heterogeneous, distributed and rapidly evolving data. This article presents a systematic review of product engineering approaches for integrating simulation models into LCA. A seven-step research approach is applied to identify, categorize and evaluate existing approaches across CAx tools. Relevant simulation parameters for sustainability assessment, including material properties, process descriptors, consumables and waste streams, are identified and analyzed. Based on identified data characteristics, the potential of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence methods for LCA data preparation is assessed. A conceptual knowledge-graph-based decision support approach is derived to enable structured integration, traceability and reuse of simulation data for sustainability assessment. The approach is evaluated using criteria from literature. Structured integration of simulation data improves early-stage data quality and supports decision-making in sustainable product engineering."}],"publication":"1st International Symposium: March 24 – 26, 2026, Heinz Nixdorf Institute, Paderborn University","type":"conference","department":[{"_id":"152"}],"date_created":"2026-07-16T09:41:28Z","date_updated":"2026-08-13T08:18:14Z","year":"2026","title":"Systematic review of engineering simulation models for life cycle assessment","author":[{"last_name":"Gräßler","orcid":"0000-0001-5765-971X","first_name":"Iris","full_name":"Gräßler, Iris","id":"47565"},{"id":"74512","first_name":"Simon","last_name":"Aydin","full_name":"Aydin, Simon"},{"id":"67999","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0602-9923","first_name":"Sven","last_name":"Rarbach","full_name":"Rarbach, Sven"}],"doi":"10.17619/UNIPB/1-2637","main_file_link":[{"url":"https://digital.ub.uni-paderborn.de/hs/download/pdf/8359171","open_access":"1"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"ieee":"I. The intention of reassembling products and their part simplies that inspection and sorting need to be integrated with value-conserving objectives. Further, disassembly and reassembly require higher competence levels of workforce than assembly. To provide the required information during engineering, a metadata model (MDM) is required that links established product models to capability models. Since processes to be carried out for realizing a product largely determine required employees’ capabilities, the proposed approach uses the ADR process domain to connect product and capability domains. The research is based on a systematic literature analysis to identify existing approaches regarding MDMs of ADR processes. Based on the results, an integrative MDM is developed that answers defined competence questions. The model enables queries which support engineers by feedback on which skills are required for a product. This builds up a basis to check whether required skills are available in the manufacturing company, either early in product engineering or later in ADR planning."}],"date_created":"2026-08-07T11:59:52Z","type":"conference","department":[{"_id":"152"}],"year":"2026","title":"Enabling extreme data by using DS/AI approaches","author":[{"id":"47565","orcid":"0000-0001-5765-971X","last_name":"Gräßler","first_name":"I.","full_name":"Gräßler, I."},{"last_name":"Hesse","first_name":"Thomas","full_name":"Hesse, Thomas","id":"76202"},{"id":"405","full_name":"Pottebaum, Jens","orcid":"http://orcid.org/0000-0001-8778-2989","last_name":"Pottebaum","first_name":"Jens"}],"publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2026-08-13T08:14:20Z","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"10.17619/UNIPB/1-2640","citation":{"ieee":"I. A major engineering challenge is the optimization of the fixed‐bed reactor design, specifically the heat dissipation in regions of high reaction heat release. A mitigation concept is the introduction of inert material into the fixed bed, called catalyst dilution. In this study, a 1D continuity model is presented, which aims to predict catalyst superheating. This model is used in an exploratory study to identify system sensitivity and optimization parameters. A significant level of complexity is added when these strategies are applied not only on integrated product level, but on lower levels of assemblies and parts. Therefore, approaches, like Design for Assembly, Disassembly and Reassembly (DfADR) become increasingly important including the consideration of ADR capabilities. To put DfADR into practice, it is necessary to structure ADR-related product data and make it usable for product engineers. For instance, assemblies resulting from disassembly might not be consistent with original assembly structures. Therefore, a Product Meta Data Model (MDM) is required to handle assembly-related data even when it has extreme characteristics. A literature review on related MDMs reveals a range of models for general product data and identifies a gap in consideration of assembly-related data. In an expert workshop, requirements are raised to evaluate existing models and develop ADR-related extensions. The MDM is conceptually modelled and validated by competence questions. The paper presents an approach that makes assembly-related data usable for hybrid decision support and enables engineers to think ahead of ADR processes.","lang":"eng"}],"date_created":"2026-07-16T11:58:01Z","type":"conference","department":[{"_id":"152"}],"status":"public","conference":{"end_date":"2026-03-26","location":"Paderborn","start_date":"2026-03-24","name":"International Symposium on Hybrid Intelligence in Product and Production Engineering 1. 2026 Paderborn"},"publisher":"Universitätsbibliothek","_id":"66517","user_id":"74028","editor":[{"last_name":"Graessler","first_name":"Iris","full_name":"Graessler, Iris"}],"citation":{"chicago":"Gräßler, Iris, Felix Vollenkemper, and Jens Pottebaum. “A Product Meta Data Model of Assembly-Related Extreme Data to Enable Hybrid Decision Support.” In 1st International Symposium: March 24 – 26, 2026, Heinz Nixdorf Institute, Paderborn University, edited by Iris Graessler. Existing data-driven studies have mainly addressed post-occurrence expulsion detection, process-end classification, or the identification of influencing factors, whereas online monitoring requires short-term risk estimation before the event occurs. In this study, expulsion prediction is formulated as a sliding-window-based pre-expulsion risk estimation task for the currently welded spot. A physics-guided hybrid GRU-XGBoost ensemble is developed to combine temporal learning from dynamic resistance and electrode-force signals with process-physics-related scalar features describing heat input, resistance state, and force response. The framework was evaluated on 2730 valid welds, including 588 expulsion and 2142 non-expulsion welds, using weld-grouped five-fold cross-validation with fold-level working-point selection. The ensemble achieved an area under the ROC curve of 0.945 ± 0.004 and a weld-level recall of 90.6 ± 3.7% at an average false alarm rate of 9.8 ± 0.2%, outperforming both individual branches. For the 533 correctly warned expulsion welds, the median early-warning lead time was 56 ms. These results indicate that online, physically interpretable pre-expulsion risk prediction is feasible under low-false-alarm constraints within the investigated RSW configuration and provide a basis for future adaptive monitoring and control studies."}],"main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"10.1016/j.jmapro.2026.07.042","title":"A physics-guided hybrid framework for online pre-expulsion prediction in resistance spot welding","year":"2026","author":[{"id":"65085","last_name":"Yang","orcid":"0000-0001-9201-9304","first_name":"Keke","full_name":"Yang, Keke"},{"full_name":"Li, Chong","first_name":"Chong","last_name":"Li"},{"id":"38279","last_name":"Beck","orcid":"0000-0001-9056-4528","first_name":"Robert","full_name":"Beck, Robert"},{"id":"7728","full_name":"Hein, David","last_name":"Hein","first_name":"David"},{"id":"32056","last_name":"Meschut","first_name":"Gerson","orcid":"0000-0002-2763-1246","full_name":"Meschut, Gerson"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["1526-6125"]},"date_updated":"2026-07-18T12:07:50Z","publication_status":"published","intvolume":" 174","article_type":"original"},{"user_id":"50522","_id":"65788","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"date_updated":"2026-08-07T06:51:22Z","author":[{"full_name":"Azam, Mohammad Hamid","last_name":"Azam","first_name":"Mohammad Hamid"}],"year":"2026","status":"public","title":"Entwicklung einer wärmebildkamerabasierten Temperaturmesseinrichtung im Lasersinterverfahren","department":[{"_id":"150"},{"_id":"624"}],"type":"bachelorsthesis","place":"Paderborn","date_created":"2026-06-08T07:16:39Z","supervisor":[{"first_name":"Florian","last_name":"Nölle","full_name":"Nölle, Florian","id":"50522"}],"citation":{"ama":"Azam MH. Entwicklung Einer Wärmebildkamerabasierten Temperaturmesseinrichtung Im Lasersinterverfahren.; 2026.","bibtex":"@book{Azam_2026, place={Paderborn}, title={Entwicklung einer wärmebildkamerabasierten Temperaturmesseinrichtung im Lasersinterverfahren}, author={Azam, Mohammad Hamid}, year={2026} }","mla":"Azam, Mohammad Hamid. Entwicklung Einer Wärmebildkamerabasierten Temperaturmesseinrichtung Im Lasersinterverfahren. 2026.","chicago":"Azam, Mohammad Hamid. Entwicklung Einer Wärmebildkamerabasierten Temperaturmesseinrichtung Im Lasersinterverfahren. Companies face significant challenges in systematically monitoring and interpreting heterogeneous environmental data originating from diverse sources, formats, and temporal contexts. While predefined workflows and decision trees can support strategic analysis, they often lack the flexibility required to cope with dynamic market conditions and foresightrelated data from extreme dispersed and heterogeneous sources. This paper proposes a method to enhance corporate resilience through the application of generic, reusable AI-based workflows in strategic product planning. The approach integrates Data Science and Artificial Intelligence methods into modular, visually modelled workflows that enable hybrid human-AI decision-making. Based on a systematic literature review and an analysis of industrial challenges, key success factors and resilience criteria are identified. These insights are used to develop a method that supports internal and external analyses, scenario-based strategy development, and adaptive implementation monitoring within a generic workflow structure. The method leverages techniques such as machine learning and generative AI to process structured and unstructured data, identify patterns, and support real-time strategic assessments. Validation with decision-makers from medium-sized companies demonstrates improved transparency, repeatability, and cross-functional collaboration compared to predefined workflows."}],"quality_controlled":"1"},{"date_created":"2026-08-13T07:29:06Z","type":"conference","department":[{"_id":"152"}],"publication":"1st International Symposium: March 24 – 26, 2026, Heinz Nixdorf Institute, Paderborn University","citation":{"mla":"Gräßler, Iris, and Julius Hendrik Goldstein. “Hybrid Decision Support in Strategic Product Planning.” 1st International Symposium: March 24 – 26, 2026, Heinz Nixdorf Institute, Paderborn University, edited by Iris Gräßler, Universitätsbibliothek, 2026, doi:10.17619/UNIPB/1-2644.","ama":"Gräßler I, Goldstein JH. Decisions made in this phase strongly influence subsequent life cycle phases but are characterized by high uncertainty, fragmented information, and predominantly qualitative assessment practices. At the same time, increasing digitalization generates large, heterogeneous, and dynamic data from markets, engineering, usage, and sustainability domains. In this work, such information is understood as extreme data, as its heterogeneity, variety, and dynamics exceed the capabilities of traditional planning approaches. This paper investigates the potential of leveraging extreme data to strengthen hybrid decision support in strategic product planning. A structured literature review is conducted to identify key challenges. These challenges are analysed along the generic product life cycle to capture decision points, information flows, and information circularity. Relevant data sources are identified with respect to their relevance for strategic decisions. Based on this analysis, seventeen potentials for hybrid decision support are derived and clustered into five fields of action. The results indicate that extreme data can enhance strategic foresight, idea evaluation and portfolio decisions, lifecycle-spanning knowledge integration, engineering support for strategic decisions, and the adoption of AI-based methods."}],"publisher":"Universitätsbibliothek","_id":"66702","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"user_id":"63262","doi":"10.17619/UNIPB/1-2644","editor":[{"last_name":"Gräßler","first_name":"Iris","full_name":"Gräßler, Iris"}],"title":"Hybrid decision support in strategic product planning","status":"public","year":"2026","author":[{"id":"47565","full_name":"Gräßler, Iris","first_name":"Iris","last_name":"Gräßler","orcid":"0000-0001-5765-971X"},{"full_name":"Goldstein, Julius Hendrik","last_name":"Goldstein","first_name":"Julius Hendrik","id":"63262"}],"conference":{"end_date":"2026-03-26","location":"Paderborn","start_date":"2026-03-24","name":"International Symposium on Hybrid Intelligence in Product and Production Engineering 1. 2026 Paderborn"},"date_updated":"2026-08-13T12:58:49Z"},{"_id":"58378","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"publisher":"ASME International","page":"1-19","doi":"10.1115/1.4067696","user_id":"48411","author":[{"first_name":"Ina","last_name":"Stratmann","full_name":"Stratmann, Ina"},{"full_name":"Hoyer, Kay-Peter","last_name":"Hoyer","first_name":"Kay-Peter","id":"48411"},{"last_name":"Schindler","first_name":"Christian","full_name":"Schindler, Christian"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["0742-4787","1528-8897"]},"title":"Developing a simplified linear-elastic material model for carbon paper applied in the rough rail-wheel contact","status":"public","year":"2025","date_updated":"2025-01-27T16:25:01Z","publication_status":"published","date_created":"2025-01-27T16:24:06Z","department":[{"_id":"9"},{"_id":"158"}],"type":"journal_article","citation":{"ieee":"I. The viscoelastic relaxation of a thermoplastic nut, which is predominantly screwed on a welding stud, is described by a material card using Prony Series. Prony Series are derived from experimental dynamical mechanical analysis with different moisture and fiber contents of the thermoplastic. Since plastic nuts usually do not have preformed threads, the increased temperatures and resulting stresses from the thread-forming process are considered in the simulation. An FE model is created and verified by substrate stress relaxation tests. Experimental clamp load measurements with miniature compression load cells verify the clamp load prediction and show a good agreement. The developed model is used to analyze the clamp load distribution within the threads and reveals an almost even distribution within the threads."}],"publisher":"Springer Science and Business Media LLC","_id":"58438","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"10.1007/s40194-025-01928-4","user_id":"55686","publication_identifier":{"issn":["0043-2288","1878-6669"]},"author":[{"full_name":"Wippermann, Jan","first_name":"Jan","last_name":"Wippermann"},{"last_name":"Meschut","first_name":"Gerson","full_name":"Meschut, Gerson"}],"status":"public","title":"Numerical modeling of clamp load relaxation of plastic nuts under varying moisture and fiber contents","year":"2025","date_updated":"2025-01-30T14:40:06Z","publication_status":"published"},{"quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"mla":"Wippermann, Jan, and Gerson Meschut. Particularly, the joining of structures to be thermally coupled, such as the battery modules and the thermal management system (TMS), poses new challenges in process design. Factors that limit the process include the increased density, viscosity, and abrasiveness of thermal pastes as well as the pressure sensitivity of battery modules. The research presented aims to systematically investigate the influences of joining parameters on flow behavior, the formation of air inclusions, and the occurring joining forces to understand and systematically optimize the joining process. Employing a test setup following the Closing-Hele-Shaw-Cell, the influence of specific process parameters on the joining process such as the joining speed, joining gap, application pattern, and temperature was investigated for a silicone- and a polyurethane-based thermally conductive paste. The results indicate a high dependency of both the ensuing joining forces and the flow behavior on the parameters investigated. These insights imply a potential systematic parameter optimization and the specific adaptation of the joining process to improve flow behavior and reduce compressive stresses. This can ensure lower component deformations and qualify the process for the employment of cell types with a higher power density, a reduced encapsulation, and lower stiffness while at the same time improving production rates."}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"_id":"58454","publisher":"Springer Science and Business Media LLC","doi":"10.1007/s40194-025-01929-3","user_id":"44391","publication_identifier":{"issn":["0043-2288","1878-6669"]},"author":[{"id":"44391","first_name":"Julian","last_name":"Gilich","full_name":"Gilich, Julian"},{"first_name":"Dominik","last_name":"Teutenberg","full_name":"Teutenberg, Dominik","id":"537"},{"last_name":"Meschut","first_name":"Gerson","orcid":"0000-0002-2763-1246","full_name":"Meschut, Gerson","id":"32056"},{"full_name":"Gröger, B.","first_name":"B.","last_name":"Gröger"},{"full_name":"Wiebicke, F.","first_name":"F.","last_name":"Wiebicke"},{"last_name":"Koch","first_name":"I.","full_name":"Koch, I."},{"last_name":"Gude","first_name":"M.","full_name":"Gude, M."}],"status":"public","title":"Effects of various process parameters in the joining process on the squeeze flow of highly viscous thermal interface materials","year":"2025","date_updated":"2025-01-31T12:22:09Z","publication_status":"published"},{"year":"2025","status":"public","title":"Komplexität beherrschen, Kreisläufe schließen: Soziotechnische Systeme für ressourceneffiziente Leichtbaustrukturen ; Das interaktive Whitepaper","date_updated":"2025-01-31T12:37:17Z","publication_status":"published","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"_id":"58456","publisher":"Technische Universität Dresden","editor":[{"full_name":"Gude, Maik","last_name":"Gude","first_name":"Maik"},{"full_name":"Tekkaya, Erman","first_name":"Erman","last_name":"Tekkaya"},{"full_name":"Zäh, Michael F.","last_name":"Zäh","first_name":"Michael F."},{"id":"32056","full_name":"Meschut, Gerson","first_name":"Gerson","last_name":"Meschut","orcid":"0000-0002-2763-1246"},{"last_name":"Lieberwirth","first_name":"Holger","full_name":"Lieberwirth, Holger"}],"doi":"10.25368/2024.8","user_id":"44391","citation":{"bibtex":"@book{Gude_Tekkaya_Zäh_Meschut_Lieberwirth_2025, title={Komplexität beherrschen, Kreisläufe schließen: Soziotechnische Systeme für ressourceneffiziente Leichtbaustrukturen ; Das interaktive Whitepaper}, DOI={10.25368/2024.8}, publisher={Technische Universität Dresden}, year={2025} }","ama":"Gude M, Tekkaya E, Zäh MF, Meschut G, Lieberwirth H, eds. Komplexität Beherrschen, Kreisläufe Schließen: Soziotechnische Systeme Für Ressourceneffiziente Leichtbaustrukturen ; Das Interaktive Whitepaper. As thermal joining processes are reaching their limits, mechanical techniques such as self-piercing riveting are being used. One innovative solution is the versatile self-piercing riveting process (V-SPR), which combines different material combinations with a multi-range rivet. 1 The joining process is divided into the piercing process and the forming process of the rivet head to the respective sheet thickness. The rivet shaft requires sufficient strength to punch through the punch-sided sheet, and sufficient ductility of the rivet head is required to form onto the punch-sided sheet. To achieve a combination of these requirements, local inductive heat treatment strategies are used for the rivet. To ensure reproducible rivet hardening, a specialised device has been developed for precise rivet positioning in the induction coil and the subsequent quenching process. The heat treatment differs in terms of hardening times and temperatures. In addition, the heat treatment is combined with a subsequent tempering process. The study aims to determine the resulting hardness distributions and microstructures of the rivet and to investigate the influence of different heat treatment strategies on joint formation and load-bearing capacities. The results show that a graded hardening profile has a positive effect on the spreading behaviour of the rivet foot and the forming behaviour of the rivet head. Furthermore, the load-bearing behaviour of the joints is increased.
","lang":"eng"}],"quality_controlled":"1","project":[{"_id":"133","name":"TRR 285 - C: TRR 285 - Project Area C"},{"name":"TRR 285: TRR 285: Methodenentwicklung zur mechanischen Fügbarkeit in wandlungsfähigen Prozessketten","grant_number":"418701707","_id":"130"}],"publication":"Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part L: Journal of Materials: Design and Applications","citation":{"chicago":"Holtkamp, Pia Katharina, Fabian Kappe, Paula Probst, Mathias Bobbert, and Gerson Meschut. “Investigation of Local Heat Treatment Strategies for a Multi-Range Capable Rivet and the Influence on Joint Formation and Load-Bearing Capacity.” Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part L: Journal of Materials: Design and Applications, 2025. https://doi.org/10.1177/14644207241307508.","short":"P.K.
