  abstract     = {{What does it mean to explain data patterns? Cognitive psychologists and other scientists face this question when observable phenomena have to be explained in theoretical terms. Frequentist null-hypothesis testing – one prominent approach in psychology – controls error rates. Machine learning – an alternative prominent outside of, but not yet inside psychology – focuses on precise predictions. However, both alternatives often provide little insight into the data. We propose a combination of formal modeling and Bayesian statistical inference to ground explanations in data analysis. We support this approach by reference to philosophy of science and discussions of the current methods crisis in several empirical sciences and illustrate it with an example from visual attention research.}},

  abstract     = {{Previous work by [1] studied gesture-speech interaction in adults. [1] focussed on temporal and semantic coordination of gesture and speech and found that while adult speech is mostly coordinated (or redundant) with gestures, semantic coordination increases the temporal synchrony. These observations do not necessarily hold for children (in particular with respect to iconic gestures, see [2]), where the speech and gesture systems are still under development. We studied the semantic and temporal coordination of speech and gesture in 4-year old children using a corpus of 40 children producing action descriptions in task oriented dialogues. In particular, we examined what kinds of information are transmitted verbally vs. non-verbally and how they are related. To account for this, we extended the semantic features (SFs) developed in [3] for object descriptions in order to include the semantics of actions. We coded the SFs on the children’s speech and gestures separately using video data. In our presentation, we will focus on the quantitative distribution of SFs across gesture and speech. Our results indicate that speech and gestures of 4-year olds are less integrated than those of the adults, although there is a large variability among the children. We will discuss the results with respect to the cognitive processes (e.g., visual memory, language) underlying children’s abilities at this stage of development. Our work paves the way for the cognitive architecture of speech-gesture interaction in preschoolers which to our knowledge is missing so far. }},

  abstract     = {{An important task in quantum physics is the estimation of local quantities for ground states of local Hamiltonians. Recently, Ambainis defined the complexity class P^QMA[log], and motivated its study by showing that the physical task of estimating the expectation value of a local observable against the ground state of a local Hamiltonian is P^QMA[log]-complete. In this paper, we continue the study of P^QMA[log], obtaining the following results. The P^QMA[log]-completeness result of Ambainis requires O(log n)-local observ- ables and Hamiltonians. We show that simulating even a single qubit measurement on ground states of 5-local Hamiltonians is P^QMA[log]-complete, resolving an open question of Ambainis. We formalize the complexity theoretic study of estimating two-point correlation functions against ground states, and show that this task is similarly P^QMA[log]-complete. P^QMA[log] is thought of as "slightly harder" than QMA. We justify this formally by exploiting the hierarchical voting technique of Beigel, Hemachandra, and Wechsung to show P^QMA[log] \subseteq PP. This improves the containment QMA \subseteq PP from Kitaev and Watrous. A central theme of this work is the subtlety involved in the study of oracle classes in which the oracle solves a promise problem. In this vein, we identify a flaw in Ambainis' prior work regarding a P^UQMA[log]-hardness proof for estimating spectral gaps of local Hamiltonians. By introducing a "query validation" technique, we build on his prior work to obtain P^UQMA[log]-hardness for estimating spectral gaps under polynomial-time Turing reductions.}},

  abstract     = {{It is possible to infiltrate a guest species selectively in one pore system of bimodal mesoporous CMK-5 carbon by an optimized nanocasting procedure. The selective filling has a drastic impact on the low-angle X-ray diffraction pattern of this novel class of materials. The structures of CMK-5, CMK-5 composite materials (sulfur and SnO2 as guest species), and CMK-3 carbon were simulated to investigate the influence of the pore filling with different guest species on the diffraction pattern and compared with experimental results. Additionally, the impact of structural defects is taken into account. The nature of the guest species strongly influences the relative intensity of the diffraction peaks. It turns out that the diffraction patterns of sulfur-carbon composite materials are nearly identical as those of CMK-3 carbon, which is attributed to a similar electron density of carbon and sulfur. Thus, sulfur is an ideal guest species to investigate the selective pore filling in CMK-5 carbon.}},

This work demonstrates how one of the pore systems can be selectively filled with elemental sulfur, while the other pore system remains empty. The resulting sulfur–carbon composite material with high residual porosity can be used as the cathode material in lithium–sulfur battery cells. We present a systematic investigation of the loading of CMK-5 carbon with variable relative amounts of sulfur and compare the results to the preparation of SnO2 (as well as TiO2, Mn2O3/Mn3O4, NiO) nanoparticle-loaded CMK-5 carbon.}},
