  abstract     = {{This article explores the interplay between learners’ linguistic and personal objectives as well as evaluations of their achievements in study-abroad contexts, an area that has thus far remained widely unexplored given the prevalence of product-oriented, outcomes-based research. The study draws on the case of one Canadian student of German who studied abroad at a German university for one year. To adopt an emic perspective, the data gained from a learning history questionnaire, semi-structured interviews, and e-journals were analyzed and interpreted within the framework of narrative analysis. The results show not only that learners’ sojourn objectives may be complex, dynamic, and contradictory in nature but also that they need to be examined beyond their face value, as they are entangled with learners’ negotiations of desirable subject positions and attempts to integrate their sojourn experiences, successes, and frustrations in a coherent and positive life narrative.}},

  abstract     = {{This paper discusses the findings of an empirical study that explores the relationship between study-abroad experiences, learner identity, and pronunciation. We argue that the role of pronunciation as a personal domain of
meaning-making warrants more attention than it has hitherto received. To this end, we investigate the narratives of Canadian learners, studying abroad in Germany, in relation to discourses of language learning, culture, and identity,
using a Critical Discourse Analysis approach. Our data, which we gained from semi-structured interviews and e-journals, shows that learners’ perceptions of pronunciation are closely linked to their views of the native-speaker ideal, impacting their self-constructions and interpretations of learning experience. In conclusion, we argue for a more differentiated understanding of pronunciation and its implications for language teaching and study abroad.}},

  abstract     = {{Parallel Sequence Spread Spectrum (PSSS) is a physical layer (PHY) baseband technology that is well suited for mixed-signal transceiver implementation for high data rate wireless communication systems. Mixed signal baseband realization allows for easier implementation of the channel equalization function and eliminates the need for high speed data converters. System design and architecture of a mixed signal baseband processor for 100 Gbps wireless communication is described that reduces the implementation complexity and results in a consequent reduction in power dissipation and chip area. An ultra-broadband analog correlator consisting of a four-quadrant multiplier and a fast resettable integrator using only NPN transistors was designed, fabricated, and measured. The correlator circuit is the core component of the receiver baseband. To the best knowledge of the authors, it is the fastest correlator circuit published so far.}},

  abstract     = {{We numerically simulate the circular polarization ratio of the radar signal backscattered from a large-grain cometary coma and compare the simulation results with the radar measurements for seven comets. We apply the discrete dipole approximation method and a model of random irregular particles. Our results confirm water ice composition of the cm-sized chunks detected by the NASA Deep Impact space probe in the vicinity of the nucleus of Comet 103P/Hartley 2. The index of the power-law size distribution in this case can be constrained to the range n ≈ 3.3–4.3. For the other considered comets the circular polarization ratio can be reproduced with variations of the power index between 2 and 5.}},

  abstract     = {{<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>
Background Children with migration background are at particular risk for overweight. We assessed the effects of a primary school-based initiative targeted at enhancing physical activity and dietary education among children with a high proportion of migration background.</jats:p><jats:p>
Methods Four 3rd and 4th grade classes (n=70 children, 77% with migration background) participated in a 10-months intervention comprising 2 additional exercise lessons weekly and 10 nutrition lessons per school year. 6 school classes (n=125 children, 65% with migration background) served as control. Before and after the intervention, an assessment of physical fitness and motor skills and questionnaires on dietary behavior and knowledge were conducted. In a subgroup (n=37), after 6 months of the intervention, daily physical activity was assessed by accelerometer-based monitoring. Differences in changes between the groups were assessed using linear regression analyses.</jats:p><jats:p>
Results Changes between the 2 time points for fitness and motor skill tests (differences in standard deviation scores) were larger in the intervention than in the control group for the total mean test value (β=0.38, p&lt;0.001), driven by higher improvements in 5 of the 8 test items, i.e., obstacle race (speed) (β=0.22, p=0.049), standing long jump (strength) (β=0.35, p&lt;0.001), sit-ups (strength) (β=0.33, p=0.002), stand and reach (mobility) (β=0.22, p=0.042), and 6 min run (endurance) (β=0.40, p&lt;0.001), independently of confounders. Changes in dietary knowledge and consumption frequencies did not differ between groups.</jats:p><jats:p>
Conclusions Promoting guided physical activity in a primary school setting with a high proportion of children with migration background positively affected parameters of fitness and motor skills.</jats:p>}},

  abstract     = {{In this paper, we present an IoT architecture which handles stream sensor data of air pollution. Particle pollution is known as a serious threat to human health. Along with developments in the use of wireless sensors and the IoT, we propose an architecture that flexibly measures and processes stream data collected in real-time by movable and low-cost IoT sensors. Thus, it enables a wide-spread network of wireless sensors that can follow changes in human behavior. Apart from stating reasons for the need of such a development and its requirements, we provide a conceptual design as well as a technological design of such an architecture. The technological design consists of Kaa and Apache Storm which can collect air pollution information in real-time and solve various problems to process data such as missing data and synchronization. This enables us to add a simulation in which we provide issues that might come up when having our architecture in use. Together with these issues, we state r easons for choosing specific modules among candidates. Our architecture combines wireless sensors with the Kaa IoT framework, an Apache Kafka pipeline and an Apache Storm Data Stream Management System among others. We even provide open-government data sets that are freely available.}},

We especially focus on syntactic ambiguity and gradience in Middle Low German, which causes uncertainty to some extent. Since current annotation tools consider construction contexts and the dynamics of the grammaticalization only partially, we plan to extend CorA – a web-based annotation tool for historical and other non-standard language data – to capture elaboration phenomena and annotator unsureness. In the era of fake news, we provide an approach for accessing news information through opinion mining. This enables users to view news on the same topics from different web sources. By applying sentiment analysis on social media posts, users can better understand how issues are captured and see people’s reactions.   abstract     = {{Consulting a physician was long regarded as an intimate and private matter. The physician-patient relationship was perceived as sensitive and trustful. Nowadays, there is a change, as medical procedures and physicians consultations are reviewed like other services on the Internet. To allay user’s privacy doubts, physician review websites assure anonymity and the protection of private data. However, there are hundreds of reviews that reveal private information and hence enable physicians or the public to identify patients. Thus, we draw attention to the cases when de-anonymization is possible. We therefore introduce an approach that highlights private information in physician reviews for users to avoid an accidental disclosure. For this reason, we combine established natural-language-processing techniques such as named entity recognition as well as handcrafted patterns to achieve a high detection accuracy. That way, we can help websites to increase privacy protection by recognizing and uncovering apparently uncritical information in user-generated texts.}},
