abstract     = {{
There are no published data regarding the overall dietary glycaemic index (GI) and glycaemic load (GL) of Australian children and adolescents. We therefore aim to describe the dietary GI and GL of participants of the 2007 Australian National Children's Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey (2007ANCNPAS), and to identify the main foods contributing to their GL. Children, aged 2–16 years, who provided two 24 h recalls in the 2007ANCNPAS were included. A final dataset of 4184 participants was analysed. GI of each food item was assigned using a previously published method. GL was calculated, and food groups contributing to the GL were described by age group and sex. The weighted mean dietary GI and GL of the participants were 54 (sd 5) and 136 (sd 44), respectively. Among the nutrients examined, Ca had the highest inverse relationship with GI (P < 0·001), while percentage energy from starch was most positively associated with GI. The association between fibre density and GI was modest, and percentage energy from sugar had an inverse relationship with GI. Daily dietary GL contributed by energy-dense and/or nutrient-poor (EDNP) items in subjects aged 14–16 years was more than doubled that of subjects aged 2–3 years. To conclude, Australian children and adolescents were having a high-GI dietary pattern characterised by high-starchy food intake and low Ca intake. A significant proportion of their dietary GL was from EDNP foods. Efforts to reduce dietary GI and GL in children and adolescents should focus on energy-dense starchy foods.
}},

  abstract     = {{
The aim of the present study was to examine the association of pre-pubertal dietary energy density (ED) with both age and body fatness at the start of the pubertal growth spurt (age at take-off, ATO). Analyses included 219 DOrtmund Nutritional and Anthropometric Longitudinally Designed Study participants with sufficient height measurements to estimate ATO who provided 3 d weighed dietary records at baseline, i.e. 2 and 3 years before ATO (mean age 6·9 (sd 1·2) years). Mean energy intakes and amounts of foods/drinks consumed at baseline were derived from the records. ED (kJ/g) was calculated based on (1) all foods and drinks (ED_all), (2) foods and energy-containing drinks (ED_energy), (3) foods and milk as a drink, but no other beverages (ED_milk) and (4) foods only, solid or liquid (ED_food). Using multiple regression analyses, the association between the ED variables and ATO was investigated. Furthermore, Z-scores of BMI and fat mass index (FMI) at ATO were considered as outcomes to reflect body fatness at puberty onset. The results showed that ED at baseline was not associated with ATO, regardless of the ED method used. For example, mean ATO in the lowest v. highest tertile of ED_food was 9·3 (95 % CI 9·0, 9·5) v. 9·4 (95 % CI 9·1, 9·7) years, Ptrend = 0·8 (adjusted for sex, maternal age, birth weight, dietary protein, dietary fibre, baseline BMI Z-score). In conclusion, dietary ED in childhood did not influence timing or body fatness at ATO in this cohort of healthy, free-living children.
}},

@phdthesis{18976,
abstract = {{Web computing is a variant of parallel computing where the idle times of PCs
donated by worldwide distributed users are employed to execute parallel
programs. In this thesis we consider a web computing variant with two
important properties: First, we support the execution of coupled, massively
parallel algorithms (rather than distributed data processing). And second,
we organize the system in peer-to-peer fashion.

We present the Paderborn University BSP-based Web Computing (PUB-Web) library,
which supports the execution of parallel programs in the bulk-synchronous style
(BSP) in such a web computing setting. In this thesis, we focus on important
technical and algorithmic aspects, in particular: In order to schedule
processes with respect to the currently available computing power, which
continually changes in an unpredictable fashion, we need intelligent load
balancing algorithms and -- as a basic precondition -- the technical ability
to migrate threads at runtime.

To achieve the latter in a way suitable for production use, compatible with
recent Java versions, available for all important platforms, and easy-to-use
for developers, we develop the PadMig thread migration and checkpointing
library.

In order to tackle the distributed load balancing problem, we present an
algorithm based on Distributed Heterogeneous Hash-Tables. In order to judge
the quality of the schedules produced, we perform extensive experiments to
compare several variants of the DHHT-based load balancer with the well-
established Work Stealing algorithm, using realistic input data obtained by
profiling the utilization of several hundred PCs for a period of several
months.

Beside the available computing power, we finally also consider the network
bandwidth as a secondary criterion for load balancing. For this purpose, we
cluster the PUB-Web network according to bandwidth, employing a novel,
fault-tolerant, adaptive, and scaling distributed clustering algorithm called
DiDiC. In order to judge the quality of the clusterings produces by DiDiC,
we experimentally compare it to the well-established MCL algorithm using a
simulator.}},

abstract = {{Over the last two decades, the discussion about innovating teaching and learning at higher education institutions (HEI) has concentrated on various core concepts: such as an increased focus on learning outcomes as competencies and more student-centered teaching. These concepts form part of what Barr and Tagg (1995) have termed the "shift from teaching to learning". However, very few approaches have been proposed so far in the scholarly literature on how to actually transfer such normative concepts into the practice of teaching and learning at HEI. In order to sustainably develop the practices of teaching and learning at HEI, it is necessary to comprehend the prerequisites for educational development. The construct of "learning culture" can be seen as a possible concept to explicate these prerequisites. The aims of this study are to (a) propose an institution-wide approach to educational development at HEI and to (b) present a comprehensive instrument to diagnose learning culture as a starting point for educational development. The findings of the study include a first version of the Learning Culture Inventory for HEI. The students' version of the instrument encompasses 12 scales for the individual, 12 for the pedagogical interactions and 5 for the organizational dimension. The assumed basic factor structure of the instruments could be confirmed. With the institution-wide approach to educational development and the Learning Culture Inventory, this study can provide the basis for sustainable developmental initiatives to innovate teaching and learning at HEI.}},
