As a baseline result, we provide evidence for significantly positive cumulative average abnormal CDS spread changes for both, European and North American acquirers suggesting that CDS investors perceive an increase in the acquiring firms’ credit risk exposures due to M&A announcements. Our baseline finding holds under several robustness checks, especially when controlling for the robustness of the empirical design. Moreover, results from a large variety of sensitivity analyses reveal a number of deal and firm characteristics that may explain why CDS investors from our sample expect an increase in the acquirers’ credit risk exposures due to forthcoming M&A transactions. In this paper, we argue that a novel conceptual framework is needed to overcome shortcomings of existing AI systems with little attention to processes of interaction and learning. Drawing from research in interaction and development, we first outline the novel conceptual framework that pushes the design of AI systems toward true interactivity with an emphasis on the role of the partner and social relevance. We propose that AI systems will be able to provide a meaningful and relevant explanation only if the process of explaining is extended to active contribution of both partners that brings about dynamics that is modulated by different levels of analysis. Accordingly, our conceptual framework comprises monitoring and scaffolding as key concepts and claims that the process of explaining is not only modulated by the interaction between explainee and explainer but is embedded into a larger social context in which conventionalized and routinized behaviors are established. We discuss our conceptual framework in relation to the established objectives of transparency and autonomy that are raised for the design of explainable AI systems currently."}],"date_created":"2021-09-14T20:52:57Z","file":[{"content_type":"application/pdf","file_id":"49081","access_level":"open_access","file_size":626217,"file_name":"2020-12-01_explainability_final_version.pdf","date_updated":"2023-11-20T16:33:51Z","relation":"main_file","date_created":"2023-11-20T16:33:51Z","creator":"haebumb"}],"department":[{"_id":"603"},{"_id":"749"},{"_id":"424"},{"_id":"67"},{"_id":"574"},{"_id":"184"},{"_id":"757"},{"_id":"54"},{"_id":"178"}],"type":"journal_article","keyword":["Explainability","process ofexplaining andunderstanding","explainable artificial systems"]},{"publication_identifier":{"unknown":["978 1 78990 312 6"]},"author":[{"full_name":"Malancu, Natalia","first_name":"Natalia","last_name":"Malancu"},{"full_name":"Florea, Alexandra","orcid":"0000-0003-0626-945X","last_name":"Florea","first_name":"Alexandra","id":"98958"}],"status":"public","year":"2021","title":"Chapter 5: Quantitative methodological approaches to citizenship and migration","date_updated":"2023-12-05T13:38:08Z","_id":"49487","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"editor":[{"full_name":"Giugni, Marco","first_name":"Marco","last_name":"Giugni"},{"first_name":"Maria","last_name":"Grasso","full_name":"Grasso, Maria"}],"user_id":"98958","doi":"https://doi.org/10.4337/9781789903133.00011","citation":{"short":"N. Drawing on the idea that metaphors give insight into\r\nimplicit conceptions of abstract entities and processes, we developed a detailed and\r\ndifferentiated set of conceptual metaphors that can be used to study student ideas about\r\nwriting in research, teaching, and interventions. A large sample of undergraduates produced\r\ntheir everyday understanding of writing in short texts beginning with a self-generated\r\nmetaphor. Based on theories from cognitive linguistics, the conceptual metaphors in their\r\ntexts were analyzed in terms of their action quality (transitivity) and spatiality (spatial\r\nprimitives). The undergraduates’ conceptualizations were very heterogeneous. Most\r\nmetaphors depart strongly from scientific approaches to academic writing within cognitive\r\npsychology and sociocultural theory. Roughly half of the metaphors could be collated to one\r\nof four metaphor systems. Error estimates are proved for semidiscretizations and full discretizations for the generalized flow. The algorithm proposed and studied here combines evolving surface finite elements, whose nodes determine the discrete surface, and linearly implicit backward difference formulae for time integration. The numerical method is based on a system coupling the surface evolution to nonlinear second-order parabolic evolution equations for the normal velocity and normal vector. A convergence proof is presented in the case of finite elements of polynomial degree at least 2 and backward difference formulae of orders 2 to 5. The error analysis combines stability estimates and consistency estimates to yield optimal-order $H^1$-norm error bounds for the computed surface position, velocity, normal vector, normal velocity and therefore for the mean curvature. The stability analysis is performed in the matrix–vector formulation and is independent of geometric arguments, which only enter the consistency analysis. Numerical experiments are presented to illustrate the convergence results and also to report on monotone quantities, e.g. Hawking mass for inverse mean curvature flow, and complemented by experiments for nonconvex surfaces.
"}],"publication":"IMA Journal of Numerical Analysis","issue":"3","keyword":["Applied Mathematics","Computational Mathematics","General Mathematics"],"type":"journal_article","department":[{"_id":"841"}],"date_created":"2023-07-10T11:44:41Z","date_updated":"2024-04-03T09:18:40Z","publication_status":"published","intvolume":" 42","year":"2021","title":"A convergent finite element algorithm for generalized mean curvature flows of closed surfaces","publication_identifier":{"issn":["0272-4979","1464-3642"]},"author":[{"first_name":"Tim","last_name":"Binz","full_name":"Binz, Tim"},{"full_name":"Kovács, Balázs","first_name":"Balázs","orcid":"0000-0001-9872-3474","last_name":"Kovács","id":"100441"}],"doi":"10.1093/imanum/drab043","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"citation":{"apa":"Binz, T., &#38; Kovács, B. It is based on surveys of highly experienced tax consultants of the largest international tax services networks. The index, called the Tax Complexity Index (TCI), is composed of a tax code subindex covering tax regulations and a tax framework subindex covering tax processes and features. For a sample of 100 countries for the year 2016, we find that the level of tax complexity varies considerably across countries, while tax code and framework complexity also vary within countries. From a global perspective, tax complexity is strongly driven by the complexity of both transfer pricing regulations in the tax code and tax audits in the tax framework. When analyzing the associations with other country characteristics, we identify different correlation patterns. For example, tax framework complexity is negatively associated with countries’ governance, suggesting that strongly governed countries tend to have less complex tax frameworks, while tax code complexity is positively associated with the statutory tax rate, indicating that high-tax countries tend to have more complex tax codes. However, none of the observed associa-tions are very strong. We conclude that tax complexity represents a distinct country charac-teristic and propose the use of our TCI and its subindices in future research.","lang":"eng"}],"citation":{"mla":"Hoppe, Thomas, et al. <i>The Tax Complexity Index – A Survey-Based Country Measure of Tax Code and Framework Complexity</i>. 2021, doi:<a href=\"https://doi.org/10.2139/ssrn.3469663\">10.2139/ssrn.3469663</a>.","ama":"Hoppe T, Schanz D, Sturm S, Sureth-Sloane C. <i>The Tax Complexity Index – A Survey-Based Country Measure of Tax Code and Framework Complexity</i>.; 2021. doi:<a href=\"https://doi.org/10.2139/ssrn.3469663\">10.2139/ssrn.3469663</a>","bibtex":"@book{Hoppe_Schanz_Sturm_Sureth-Sloane_2021, series={TRR 266 Accounting for Transparency Working Paper Series No. 5}, title={The Tax Complexity Index – A Survey-Based Country Measure of Tax Code and Framework Complexity}, DOI={<a href=\"https://doi.org/10.2139/ssrn.3469663\">10.2139/ssrn.3469663</a>}, author={Hoppe, Thomas and Schanz, Debora and Sturm, Susann and Sureth-Sloane, Caren}, year={2021}, collection={TRR 266 Accounting for Transparency Working Paper Series No. 5} }","apa":"Hoppe, T., Schanz, D., Sturm, S., &#38; Sureth-Sloane, C. Subsequently, we empirically analyze the CDS investors’ risk perception of M&A announcements using event study methodologies. As a baseline finding, we provide evidence for significantly positive cumulative average abnormal CDS spread changes suggesting that CDS investors perceive an increase in the acquiring firms’ credit risk exposures due to M&A announcements. Our baseline finding holds under several robustness checks, especially when controlling for the robustness of the empirical design as well as regional and sectoral differences. Moreover, results from a large variety of sensitivity analyses including deal and firm characteristics provide a deeper insight into the driving factors of CDS investors’ risk perceptions of M&A announcements."}]},{"date_created":"2024-04-09T06:50:36Z","department":[{"_id":"360"}],"type":"journal_article","keyword":["General Mathematics","Education"],"publication":"ZDM – Mathematics Education","issue":"6","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"
Abstract
In this survey paper we aim to provide an overview of research on mathematics textbooks and, more broadly, curriculum resources as instruments for change related to mathematical content, instructional goals and practices, and student learning of mathematics. In particular, we elaborate on the following themes: (1) The role of curriculum resources as instruments for change from a theoretical perspective; (2) The design of curriculum resources to mediate the implementation of reform ideas and innovative practice; (3) Teachers’ influence on the implementation of change through curriculum resources; (4) Students’ influence on the implementation of change through curriculum resources; and (5) Evidence of curriculum resources yielding changes in student-related factors or variables. We claim that, whilst textbooks and curriculum resources are influential, they alone cannot change teachers’ teaching nor students’ learning practices in times of curricular change. Moreover, more knowledge is needed about features of curriculum resources that support the implementation of change. We contend that curriculum innovations are likely to be successful, if teachers and students are supported to co- and re-design the relevant curriculum trajectories and materials in line with the reform efforts and their own individual needs.
"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"10.1007/s11858-021-01309-3","publication_identifier":{"issn":["1863-9690","1863-9704"]},"author":[{"id":"31132","last_name":"Rezat","first_name":"Sebastian","full_name":"Rezat, Sebastian"},{"full_name":"Fan, Lianghuo","first_name":"Lianghuo","last_name":"Fan"},{"full_name":"Pepin, Birgit","first_name":"Birgit","last_name":"Pepin"}],"title":"Mathematics textbooks and curriculum resources as instruments for change","year":"2021","intvolume":" 53","date_updated":"2024-04-18T07:51:53Z","publication_status":"published","citation":{"chicago":"Rezat, Sebastian, Lianghuo Fan, and Birgit Pepin. “Mathematics Textbooks and Curriculum Resources as Instruments for Change.” <i>ZDM – Mathematics Education</i> 53, no. 6 (2021): 1189–1206. <a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1007/s11858-021-01309-3\">https://doi.org/10.1007/s11858-021-01309-3</a>.","short":"S. However, their reactions typically involve the use of high loadings of noble metal and are difficult to recycle, making them somewhat unsustainable. We have synthesized surface-immobilized Pt–H species via oxidative addition of surface OH groups to Pt(PtBu3)2 (1), a rarely used immobilization technique in surface organometallic chemistry. The hydride species thus made were characterized by infrared, magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance, and X-ray absorption spectroscopies and catalyzed both olefin isomerization and cycloisomerization of a 1,6 enyne (5) with a high selectivity and low Pt loading."}]}]
