abstract = {{Visual salience is a key component of attentional selection, the process that guards the scarce resources needed for conscious recognition and perception. In previous works, we proposed a measure of visual salience based on a formal theory of visual selection. However, the strength of visual salience depends on the time course as well as local physical contrasts. Evidence from multiple experimental designs in the literature suggests that the strength of salience rises initially and declines after approximately 150 ms. The present article amends the theory-based salience measure beyond local physical contrasts to the time course of salience. It does so through a first experiment which reveals that—contrary to expectations—salience is not reduced during the first 150 ms after onset. Instead, the overall visual processing capacity is severely reduced, which corresponds to a reduced processing speed of all stimuli in the visual field. A second experiment confirms this conclusion by replicating the result. We argue that the slower stimulus processing may have been overlooked previously because the attentional selection mechanism had not yet been modeled in studies on the time course of salience.}},

This in-depth case study investigates the question of the Greek loan of 1833, issued by Rothschilds. The main interest is to reconstruct James de Rothschild’s risk perception and decision making process, expressed in the argumentation vis-à-vis his family. The significance of the guarantee of the protecting powers, which was without precedent, is considered by James as well as the competitive situation on the bond market, the relationship of the Rothschilds with leading politicians of the time, and the special significance of Greece in the period of intensive European philhellenism. Here we investigated the phenotype of circulating B cell subsets and the relationship with body composition in adolescents with AN before (T0, n = 24) and after 6 weeks (T1, n = 20) of treatment. Using multi-parameter flow cytometry, we found increased percentages of antigen-experienced B cells and plasmablasts in patients with AN compared to healthy controls (n = 20). In contrast, percentages of CD1d+CD5+ B cells and transitional B cells with immunoregulatory roles were reduced at T0 and T1. These B cell frequencies correlated positively with fat mass, fat mass index (FMI), free fat mass index, and body mass index standard deviation score. In addition, scavenger-like receptor CD5 expression levels were downregulated on transitional B cells and correlated with fat mass and FMI in AN. Our findings that regulatory B cell subgroups were reduced in AN and their strong relationship with body composition parameters point toward an impact of immunoregulatory B cells in the pathogenesis of AN.
}},

The structural properties and energetics of the intercalation compounds are compared based on different sizes, geometries, and the physical and chemical properties of the intercalated anions. The staging mechanism of anion intercalation into graphite and the specific capacities, and voltage profiles of the intercalated compounds are investigated. A comparison regarding battery electrochemistry is also done with available experimental observations. Our calculated intercalation energies and voltage profiles show that the initial anion intercalation into graphite is less favorable than subsequent ones for all the anions considered in this study. Although the effect of the size of anions in a graphite cathode on various properties of the intercalated compounds is not as significant as the size of cations in a graphite anode, some distinction between the studied anions can still be made. abstract = {{Corrosion is a major cause for the failure of metallic components in various branches of the industry. Depending on the corrosion severity, the time until failure of the component varies. On the contrary, a study has shown that certain riveted metal joints, exposed to a short period of mechanical loading and corrosion, have greater fatigue limits. This study gives rise to the question how different corrosion exposure times affect joint metallic components. In the present research, a theoretical approach is developed in order to evaluate the influence of galvanic corrosion on joint integrity of clinched metal joints. At first, the framework for modeling galvanic corrosion is introduced. Furthermore, a simulative investigation of a clinching point is carried out based on the assumption that corrosion leads to a reduction of the contact area which leads to a local increase in contact pressure. For this purpose, the stiffness values of individual elements in a finite element model are reduced locally in the contact area of the undercut and the contact stress along a path is evaluated. Summarizing, a modeling approach is introduced to investigate corrosion effects on load-bearing behavior of clinched joints. }},
