[{"abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"
Abstract
This paper examines how legally restricted access to banking services affects small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in a highly developed country. Using a mixed-method approach, we examine the unique situation of the US marijuana industry. The industry benefits from the superior institutional environment in terms of legal protection and the labor market of the United States. However, due to conflicting state and federal laws it has no legal access to banking. We find significant value effects around three major events that affected future access to banking. These results indicate that banking access remains desirable for the marijuana industry. A survey taken by marijuana SMEs provides insights into what banking services are considered most valuable. We find that marijuana SMEs have problems to obtain financing and handle their transactions largely in cash, resulting in transaction inefficiency and high security concerns. Thereby, we shed light on the value of banks for SMEs in developed countries. We complement the literature on financial transaction services by highlighting the value for SMEs in developed markets.
"}],"issue":"6","publication":"Journal of Business Economics","type":"journal_article","date_created":"2025-01-06T08:27:26Z","intvolume":" 91","date_updated":"2025-01-06T08:27:33Z","publication_status":"published","publication_identifier":{"issn":["0044-2372","1861-8928"]},"author":[{"full_name":"Merz, Markus","first_name":"Markus","last_name":"Merz"},{"id":"86351","full_name":"Riepe, Jan","last_name":"Riepe","first_name":"Jan"}],"title":"SMEs with legally restricted banking access: evidence from the US marijuana industry","year":"2021","doi":"10.1007/s11573-020-01017-6","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"citation":{"apa":"Merz, M., & Riepe, J. Hence, hyper-parameter tuning is often indispensable. Normally such tuning requires the dedicated machine learning model to be trained and evaluated on centralized data to obtain a performance estimate. However, in a distributed machine learning scenario, it is not always possible to collect all the data from all nodes due to privacy concerns or storage limitations. Moreover, if data has to be transferred through low bandwidth connections it reduces the time available for tuning. Model-Based Optimization (MBO) is one state-of-the-art method for tuning hyper-parameters but the application on distributed machine learning models or federated learning lacks research. This work proposes a framework$$\\textit{MODES}$$MODESthat allows to deploy MBO on resource-constrained distributed embedded systems. Each node trains an individual model based on its local data. The goal is to optimize the combined prediction accuracy. The presented framework offers two optimization modes: (1)$$\\textit{MODES}$$MODES-B considers the whole ensemble as a single black box and optimizes the hyper-parameters of each individual model jointly, and (2)$$\\textit{MODES}$$MODES-I considers all models as clones of the same black box which allows it to efficiently parallelize the optimization in a distributed setting. Since dietary habits are acquired during early life, describing age and time trends of flavonoid intake and major food sources are important for monitoring and disease prevention in later life. We aimed to describe total flavonoid intake and food sources and to investigate age and time trends of flavonoid intake in 3–18-year-olds, from the Dortmund Nutritional and Anthropometric Longitudinally Designed study from 1985 to 2016. Intake was assessed annually using 3-d weighed food records (WFR). Flavonoid values were assigned using the United States Department of Agriculture database. Foods contributing to intake were determined. Age and time trends in total flavonoid and isoflavone density were analysed by sex with PROC MIXED. In total, 1312 children completed 10 758 WFR. Across all ages, daily mean total flavonoid density was lower in boys compared with girls (134 v. 146 mg/4184 kJ) and no difference in median isoflavone density (0·04 mg/4184 kJ per d) was found. The top five foods contributing to total flavonoid intake were apple with peel (15·0/17·1 %), strawberries (5·9/6·1 %), chocolate spread (3·9/3·5 %), orange juice (3·5/3·4 %) and pasta (3·5/3·4 %) for boys and girls, respectively. Overall, in boys, total flavonoid density decreased over the course of age and time. In girls, there was no association with age or time. In both sexes, isoflavone density followed a U-shaped age trend with no change over time. From a public health perspective, the overall observed downwards trend of flavonoid intake in boys deserves attention. Future initiatives should be tailored at maintaining a high flavonoid density as children age, specifically among boys.
"}],"date_created":"2021-10-29T13:58:15Z","type":"journal_article","department":[{"_id":"17"},{"_id":"22"},{"_id":"571"}],"title":"Dietary flavonoids among children and adolescents in the Dortmund Nutritional and Anthropometric Longitudinally Designed (DONALD) study: intake, food sources and trends from 1985 until 2016","status":"public","year":"2020","author":[{"full_name":"Rienks, Johanna","first_name":"Johanna","last_name":"Rienks"},{"first_name":"Katharina J.","last_name":"Penczynski","full_name":"Penczynski, Katharina J."},{"first_name":"Sarah","last_name":"Schmitting","full_name":"Schmitting, Sarah"},{"id":"65985","last_name":"Buyken","first_name":"Anette","full_name":"Buyken, Anette"},{"last_name":"Nöthlings","first_name":"Ute","full_name":"Nöthlings, Ute"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["0007-1145","1475-2662"]},"publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2022-01-06T06:57:32Z","page":"1198-1206","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"_id":"27013","user_id":"61597","doi":"10.1017/s000711452000183x"},{"date_created":"2021-11-25T15:54:31Z","type":"journal_article","department":[{"_id":"462"}],"publication":"Large-scale Assessments in Education","citation":{"ieee":"M. It has a lasting influence on the perception of cultural identity as well as on the interactions between research, the cultural economy and society. Throughout the last three decades, many cultural heritage institutions have contributed a wealth of digital representations of cultural assets (2D digital reproductions of paintings, sheet music, 3D digital models of sculptures, monuments, rooms, buildings), audio-visual data (music, film, stage performances), and procedural research data such as encoding and annotation formats. The long-term preservation and FAIR availability of research data from the cultural heritage domain is fundamentally important, not only for future academic success in the humanities but also for the cultural identity of individuals and society as a whole. Up to now, no coordinated effort for professional research data management on a national level exists in Germany. NFDI4Culture aims to fill this gap and create a user-centered, research-driven infrastructure that will cover a broad range of research domains from musicology, art history and architecture to performance, theatre, film, and media studies.
\r\n
The research landscape addressed by the consortium is characterized by strong institutional differentiation. Research units in the consortium's community of interest comprise university institutes, art colleges, academies, galleries, libraries, archives and museums. This diverse landscape is also characterized by an abundance of research objects, methodologies and a great potential for data-driven research. In a unique effort carried out by the applicant and co-applicants of this proposal and ten academic societies, this community is interconnected for the first time through a federated approach that is ideally suited to the needs of the participating researchers. To promote collaboration within the NFDI, to share knowledge and technology and to provide extensive support for its users have been the guiding principles of the consortium from the beginning and will be at the heart of all workflows and decision-making processes. Thanks to these principles, NFDI4Culture has gathered strong support ranging from individual researchers to high-level cultural heritage organizations such as the UNESCO, the International Council of Museums, the Open Knowledge Foundation and Wikimedia. On this basis, NFDI4Culture will take innovative measures that promote a cultural change towards a more reflective and sustainable handling of research data and at the same time boost qualification and professionalization in data-driven research in the domain of cultural heritage. This will create a long-lasting impact on science, cultural economy and society as a whole.
"}],"date_created":"2021-02-17T15:20:47Z","type":"journal_article","department":[{"_id":"233"}],"status":"public","year":"2020","title":"NFDI4Culture - Consortium for research data on material and immaterial cultural heritage","publication_identifier":{"issn":["2367-7163"]},"author":[{"first_name":"Reinhard","last_name":"Altenhöner","full_name":"Altenhöner, Reinhard"},{"full_name":"Blümel, Ina","first_name":"Ina","last_name":"Blümel"},{"first_name":"Franziska","last_name":"Boehm","full_name":"Boehm, Franziska"},{"full_name":"Bove, Jens","last_name":"Bove","first_name":"Jens"},{"first_name":"Katrin","last_name":"Bicher","full_name":"Bicher, Katrin"},{"full_name":"Bracht, Christian","first_name":"Christian","last_name":"Bracht"},{"full_name":"Brand, Ortrun","last_name":"Brand","first_name":"Ortrun"},{"full_name":"Dieckmann, Lisa","last_name":"Dieckmann","first_name":"Lisa"},{"last_name":"Effinger","first_name":"Maria","full_name":"Effinger, Maria"},{"full_name":"Hagener, Malte","last_name":"Hagener","first_name":"Malte"},{"full_name":"Hammes, Andrea","first_name":"Andrea","last_name":"Hammes"},{"last_name":"Heller","first_name":"Lambert","full_name":"Heller, Lambert"},{"last_name":"Kailus","first_name":"Angela","full_name":"Kailus, Angela"},{"first_name":"Hubertus","last_name":"Kohle","full_name":"Kohle, Hubertus"},{"full_name":"Ludwig, Jens","last_name":"Ludwig","first_name":"Jens"},{"first_name":"Andreas","last_name":"Münzmay","full_name":"Münzmay, Andreas"},{"full_name":"Pittroff, Sarah","first_name":"Sarah","last_name":"Pittroff"},{"last_name":"Razum","first_name":"Matthias","full_name":"Razum, Matthias"},{"id":"439","full_name":"Röwenstrunk, Daniel","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6271-2095","first_name":"Daniel","last_name":"Röwenstrunk"},{"full_name":"Sack, Harald","first_name":"Harald","last_name":"Sack"},{"full_name":"Simon, Holger","last_name":"Simon","first_name":"Holger"},{"last_name":"Schmidt","first_name":"Dörte","full_name":"Schmidt, Dörte"},{"last_name":"Schrade","first_name":"Torsten","full_name":"Schrade, Torsten"},{"last_name":"Walzel","first_name":"Annika-Valeska","full_name":"Walzel, Annika-Valeska"},{"full_name":"Wiermann, Barbara","first_name":"Barbara","last_name":"Wiermann"}],"date_updated":"2022-01-06T06:54:51Z","publication_status":"published","_id":"21257","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"10.3897/rio.6.e57036","user_id":"439"}]
