They all strive to generate an\r\n integer-grid map\r\n , i.e. a parametrization of the input surface into R\r\n 2\r\n such that the canonical grid of integer iso-lines forms a quad mesh when mapped back onto the surface in R\r\n 3\r\n . An essential, albeit broadly neglected aspect of these methods is the\r\n quad extraction\r\n step, i.e. the materialization of an actual quad mesh from the mere \"quad texture\". Quad (mesh) extraction is often believed to be a trivial matter but quite the opposite is true: numerous special cases, ambiguities induced by numerical inaccuracies and limited solver precision, as well as imperfections in the maps produced by most methods (unless costly countermeasures are taken) pose significant challenges to the quad extractor. We present a method to sanitize a provided parametrization such that it becomes numerically consistent even in a limited precision floating point representation. Based on this we are able to provide a comprehensive and sound description of how to perform quad extraction robustly and without the need for any complex tolerance thresholds or disambiguation rules. On top of that we develop a novel strategy to cope with common local fold-overs in the parametrization. This allows our method, dubbed\r\n QEx\r\n , to generate all-quadrilateral meshes where otherwise holes, non-quad polygons or no output at all would have been produced. We thus enable the practical use of an entire class of maps that was previously considered defective. Since state of the art quad meshing methods spend a significant share of their run time solely to prevent local fold-overs, using our method it is now possible to obtain quad meshes significantly quicker than before. We also provide libQEx, an open source C++ reference implementation of our method and thus significantly lower the bar to enter the field of quad meshing.\r\n
"}],"doi":"10.1145/2508363.2508372","user_id":"117512"},{"_id":"60452","date_updated":"2025-07-14T12:39:58Z","publisher":"Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)","date_created":"2025-06-30T07:06:50Z","status":"public","publication_identifier":{"issn":["0730-0301","1557-7368"]},"year":"2013","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"publication_status":"published","citation":{"chicago":"Bommes, David, Marcel Campen, Hans-Christian Ebke, Pierre Alliez, and Leif Kobbelt. “Integer-Grid Maps for Reliable Quad Meshing.” <i>ACM Transactions on Graphics</i> 32, no. 4 (2013): 1–12. <a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1145/2461912.2462014\">https://doi.org/10.1145/2461912.2462014</a>.","ieee":"D. Two of the most important ones are (1) high regularity due to explicit control over irregular vertices and (2) smooth distribution of distortion achieved by convex variational formulations. Apart from these strengths, state-of-the-art techniques suffer from limited reliability on real-world input data, i.e. the determined map might have degeneracies like (local) non-injectivities and consequently often cannot be used directly to generate a quadrilateral mesh. In this paper we propose a novel convex Mixed-Integer Quadratic Programming (MIQP) formulation which ensures by construction that the resulting map is within the class of so called Integer-Grid Maps that are guaranteed to imply a quad mesh. In order to overcome the NP-hardness of MIQP and to be able to remesh typical input geometries in acceptable time we propose two additional problem specific optimizations: a complexity reduction algorithm and singularity separating conditions. While the former decouples the dimension of the MIQP search space from the input complexity of the triangle mesh and thus is able to dramatically speed up the computation without inducing inaccuracies, the latter improves the continuous relaxation, which is crucial for the success of modern MIQP optimizers. Our experiments show that the reliability of the resulting algorithm does not only annihilate the main drawback of parametrization based quad-remeshing but moreover enables the global search for high-quality coarse quad layouts - a difficult task solely tackled by greedy methodologies before.
","lang":"eng"}],"doi":"10.1145/2461912.2462014"},{"doi":"10.1002/chem.201303340","extern":"1","title":"X-ray Spectroscopic Verification of the Active Species in Iron-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling Reactions","user_id":"89271","keyword":["T3","CSSD"],"type":"journal_article","publication":"Chemistry - A European Journal","issue":"47","volume":19,"page":"15816-15821","intvolume":" 19","author":[{"last_name":"Schoch","full_name":"Schoch, Roland","first_name":"Roland"},{"first_name":"Willi","full_name":"Desens, Willi","last_name":"Desens"},{"orcid":"0000-0001-9025-3244","id":"89271","last_name":"Werner","first_name":"Thomas","full_name":"Werner, Thomas"},{"first_name":"Matthias","full_name":"Bauer, Matthias","last_name":"Bauer"}],"department":[{"_id":"35"},{"_id":"2"},{"_id":"657"}],"publication_status":"published","citation":{"chicago":"Schoch, Roland, Willi Desens, Thomas Werner, and Matthias Bauer. “X-Ray Spectroscopic Verification of the Active Species in Iron-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling Reactions.” <i>Chemistry - A European Journal</i> 19, no. 47 (2013): 15816–21. <a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1002/chem.201303340\">https://doi.org/10.1002/chem.201303340</a>.","ieee":"R. The calculations are based on the electronic structure obtained from density-functional theory. The subsequent application of the GW approximation to account for quasiparticle effects and the solution of the Bethe–Salpeter equation yield a dielectric function for the stoichiometric material that slightly overestimates the absorption onset and the oscillator strength in comparison with experimental measurements. Calculations at the level of the independent-particle approximation indicate that these deficiencies are at least partially related to the neglect of intrinsic defects typical for the congruent material. The second-order polarizability calculated within the independent-particle approximation predicts strong nonlinear coefficients for photon energies above 1.5 eV. The comparison with measured data suggests that self-energy effects improve the agreement between experiment and theory. The intrinsic defects of congruent samples reduce the optical nonlinearities, in particular for the 21 and 31 tensor components, further improving the agreement with measured data."}],"doi":"10.1007/978-3-319-02165-2_8","has_accepted_license":"1","project":[{"_id":"52","name":"Computing Resources Provided by the Paderborn Center for Parallel Computing"}],"file":[{"relation":"main_file","date_updated":"2020-08-30T14:57:36Z","file_name":"Riefer2013_Chapter_LithiumNiobateDielectricFuncti.pdf","content_type":"application/pdf","file_id":"18586","date_created":"2020-08-28T15:34:44Z","creator":"schindlm","description":"© 2013 Springer International Publishing, Switzerland","file_size":517819,"access_level":"closed","title":"Lithium niobate dielectric function and second-order polarizability tensor from massively parallel ab initio calculations"}],"title":"Lithium niobate dielectric function and second-order polarizability tensor from massively parallel ab initio calculations"},{"volume":87,"issue":"7","article_number":"075104","publication":"Physical Review B","ddc":["530"],"quality_controlled":"1","type":"journal_article","user_id":"16199","oa":"1","external_id":{"arxiv":["1302.6368"],"isi":["000314682500002"]},"file":[{"date_updated":"2020-08-30T14:54:49Z","relation":"main_file","file_name":"PhysRevB.87.075104.pdf","content_type":"application/pdf","file_id":"18541","date_created":"2020-08-28T10:01:56Z","description":"© 2013 American Physical Society","creator":"schindlm","file_size":229196,"access_level":"open_access","title":"Analytic evaluation of the electronic self-energy in the GW approximation for two electrons on a sphere"}],"title":"Analytic evaluation of the electronic self-energy in the GW approximation for two electrons on a sphere","doi":"10.1103/PhysRevB.87.075104","has_accepted_license":"1","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"The GW approximation for the electronic self-energy is an important tool for the quantitative prediction of excited states in solids, but its mathematical exploration is hampered by the fact that it must, in general, be evaluated numerically even for very simple systems. In this paper I describe a nontrivial model consisting of two electrons on the surface of a sphere, interacting with the normal long-range Coulomb potential, and show that the GW self-energy, in the absence of self-consistency, can in fact be derived completely analytically in this case. The resulting expression is subsequently used to analyze the convergence of the energy gap between the highest occupied and the lowest unoccupied quasiparticle orbital with respect to the total number of states included in the spectral summations. The asymptotic formula for the truncation error obtained in this way, whose dominant contribution is proportional to the cutoff energy to the power −3/2, may be adapted to extrapolate energy gaps in other systems."}],"file_date_updated":"2020-08-30T14:54:49Z","_id":"18479","isi":"1","date_updated":"2025-12-16T11:08:31Z","publisher":"American Physical Society","date_created":"2020-08-27T22:09:04Z","status":"public","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"year":"2013","publication_identifier":{"eissn":["1550-235X"],"issn":["1098-0121"]},"publication_status":"published","citation":{"ieee":"A. While prior research shows promising potential for this model, it has never been tested on a large scale dataset. Thus, guided by economic theory, this paper is the first to design a large-scale applicable implementation on around 30,000 technology firm quarter observations from 1992 to 2009 for the US to assess this model. Evaluating the feasibility and performance of the Schwartz-Moon model reveals that it is comparably accurate to the traditional sales multiple with key advantages in valuing small and non-listed firms. Most importantly, however, the model is able to indicate severe market over- or undervaluation from a fundamental perspective. Because these conditions are hardly ever met, we extend the standard approaches, based on the fundamental principle of financial statement articulation. The extended models are then tested empirically by employing two sets of forecasts: (1) analyst forecasts provided by Value Line and (2) forecasts generated by cross-sectional regression models. The main result is that our extended models yield considerably smaller valuation errors. Moreover, by construction, identical value estimates are obtained across the extended models. By reestablishing empirical equivalence under non-ideal conditions, our approach provides a benchmark that enables us to quantify the errors resulting from individual deviations from ideal conditions, and thus, to analyze the robustness of the standard approaches. Finally, by providing a level playing field for the different valuation approaches, our findings have implications for other empirical settings, for example, estimating the implied cost of capital. In meeting them simulation tools play a central role. Yet it is often impossible for a single developer to foresee the overall impact a design decision will have on the system and on the other domains involved. For this task multi-domain simulation tools exists, but because of its complexity and the different levels of detail that are needed, the effort to specify a complete system from scratch is very high. Another challenge is the selection of the most suitable solution elements provided by the manufacturers. Currently they are often chosen manually from catalogues. The development engineer is therefore usually inclined to employ well-known solution elements and suppliers. To tackle both challenges our aim is an increase in efficiency and innovation by means of generally available solution knowledge, such as well-proven solution patterns, ready-to-use solution elements, and established simulation models [1]. Our paper presents a tool-supported, sequential design process. From the outset, the comprehensive functional capability of the designed system is supervised by means of multi-domain simulation. At significant points in the design process, solution knowledge can be accessed as it is stored in ontologies and therefore available via Semantic Web [2]. Thus, one can overcome barriers resulting from different terminologies or referential systems and furthermore infer further knowledge from the stored knowledge. The paper focuses on an early testing in the conceptual design stage and on the subsequent semantic search for suitable solution elements. After the specification of a principle solution for the mechatronic system by combining solution patterns, an initial multi-domain model of the system is created. This is done on the basis of the active structure and of idealized simulation models which are part of a free library and associated with the chosen solution patterns via the ontologies. In further designing the controlled system and its parameters with the completed model, the developer defines additional criteria to be fed into the subsequent semantic search for solution elements. Information on the latter is provided by the manufacturers as well as detailed simulation models, which are used to analyze the functional capability of the concretized system. Therefore, the corresponding idealized models are replaced automatically with the parameterized models of the solution elements containing for example the specific friction model for the chosen motor. We show this process using the concrete example of a dough-production system. In particular, we focus on its transport system. Resulting requirements for the simulation models and their level of detail are expound, as well as the architecture and benefits of the ontologies.
