  text: In this contribution the application of a directional coupler for analysing
    reference reflections from thin layers in ultrasonic measurement of the characteristic
    acoustic impedance is presented. In a prior work ([2]) it was shown, that a directional
    coupler can be used in combination with an ultrasonic transducer to get reflections
    from layers that are very close to the transducers surface. Since the directional
    coupler provides the opportunity to send and receive signals at the same time,
    these layers can be very thin ({\textless} 1 mm). Reflections that arrive at the
    transducer during the sending process can be analysed because the directional
    coupler separates the receiving signal from the input signal of the transducer.
    When only one transducer is used to measure the acoustic impedance of a liquid
    the reflections from the thin layer reach the transducer after a very short time.
    The reflections sum up and with the concept of reflection and transmission coefficients
    a relation is found between the measured amplitude and a reference amplitude which
    was measured before. The exciting signal could be a burst of some periods of a
    sinusoidal alternating voltage. The advantages of using thin layers for the described
    task are the small geometry that allows flexible application of the sensor and
    the minimisation of temperature gradients within the medium because thin layers
    can follow thermal fluctuations faster than thick ones. In this paper the functional
    principle and first achievements are presented.

  text: Excited-state calculations, notably for quasiparticle band structures, are
    nowadays routinely performed within the GW approximation for the electronic self-energy.
    Nevertheless, certain numerical approximations and simplifications are still employed
    in practice to make the computations feasible. An important aspect for periodic
    systems is the proper treatment of the singularity of the screened Coulomb interaction
    in reciprocal space, which results from the slow 1/r decay in real space. This
    must be done without introducing artificial interactions between the quasiparticles
    and their periodic images in repeated cells, which occur when integrals of the
    screened Coulomb interaction are discretised in reciprocal space. An adequate
    treatment of both aspects is crucial for a numerically stable computation of the
    self-energy. In this article we build on existing schemes for isotropic screening
    and present an extension for anisotropic systems. We also show how the contributions
    to the dielectric function arising from the non-local part of the pseudopotentials
    can be computed efficiently. These improvements are crucial for obtaining a fast
    convergence with respect to the number of points used for the Brillouin zone integration
    and prove to be essential to make GW calculations for strongly anisotropic systems,
    such as slabs or multilayers, efficient.

  text: 'Visual backward masking is frequently used to study the temporal dynamics
    of visual perception. These dynamics may include the temporal features of conscious
    percepts, as suggested, for instance, by the asynchronous-updating model (Neumann,
    1982) and perceptual-retouch theory (Bachmann, 1994). These models predict that
    the perceptual latency of a visual backward mask is shorter than that of a like
    reference stimulus that was not preceded by a masked stimulus. The prediction
    has been confirmed by studies using temporal-order judgments: For certain asynchronies
    between mask and reference stimulus, temporal-order reversals are quite frequent
    (e.g. Scharlau, & Neumann, 2003a). However, it may be argued that these reversals
    were due to a response bias in favour of the mask rather than true temporal-perceptual
    effects. I introduce two measures for assessing latency effects that (1) are not
    prone to such a response bias, (2) allow to quantify the latency gain, and (3)

  text: 'The Fehrer-Raab effect (simple reaction time is unaffected by metacontrast
    masking of the test stimulus) seems to imply that a stimulus can trigger a voluntary
    reaction without reaching a conscious representation. However, it is also possible
    that the mask triggers the reaction, and that the masked test stimulus causes
    a focussing of attention from which processing of the mask profits, thus reaching
    conscious representation earlier. This is predicted by the Weather Station Model
    of visual masking. Three experiments tested this explanation. Experiment 1 showed
    that the masked test stimulus caused a temporal shift of the mask. Experiment
    2 showed that the reaction in the Fehrer-Raab effect was not exclusively triggered
    by a conscious representation of the test stimulus: the mask was involved in evoking
    the reaction. Experiment 3 again revealed a temporal shift of the mask. However,
    the shift was only about half as large as the Fehrer-Raab effect. The psychometric

    two monotonic components which reflect the effects of mechanisms similar to the
    peripheral and central processes suggested for backward pattern masking by Turvey
    (Psychol Rev 80:1-52, 1973). In an experiment using the disc-ring paradigm, it
    was demonstrated that the decreasing and increasing branches of the metacontrast
    function are differently affected by the exposure duration of the mask and a task-irrelevant
    stimulus (distractor) appearing in the contralateral visual hemifield. The phenomenal
    representation of masking is different for the two parts of the curve. It is suggested
    that masking in the second part of the masking function, but not in the first,
