  text: "We outline a theoretical description of the absorption linewidth of quantum
    well intersubband transitions\r\nby solving Maxwell’s equations for a non-local
    susceptibility including many particle effects. We\r\nshow that the intersubband
    absorption results from a complex interplay between mean-field effects,\r\ndephasing
    contributions and light propagation effects, all being very sensitive to subband
    dispersion."

    nonlinear optical excitation\r\nis studied using quantum kinetic equations. We
    find that despite the decoherence process Rabi\r\noscillations occur even for
    relatively long pulse durations and that their signatures in pump-probe experiments\r\nonly
    get suppressed for high input pulse areas."

  text: We discuss the implementation of quasiparticle calculations for point defects
    on semiconductor surfaces and, as a specific example, present an ab initio study
    of the electronic structure of the As vacancy in the +1 charge state on the GaAs(110)
    surface. The structural properties are calculated with the plane‐wave pseudopotential
    method, and the quasiparticle energies are obtained from Hedin's GW approximation.
    Our calculations show that the 1a″ vacancy state in the band gap is shifted from
    0.06 to 0.65 eV above the valence‐band maximum after the self‐energy correction
    to the Kohn‐Sham eigenvalues. The GW result is in close agreement with a recent
    surface photovoltage imaging measurement.

  text: Nonlinear propagation of optical pulses through an extended bulk semiconductor
    is investigated using the coupled semiconductor Maxwell‐Bloch equations including
    excitation induced correlations. For short pulse excitation around the exciton
    resonance, the theory describes the development of polariton beats and their suppression
    at increasing input pulse intensities due to the coupling of single exciton states
    to the Coulomb‐correlated continuum of two‐exciton states. A comparison of the
    theoretical results with experimental observations for CdSe bulk material is presented.
