The comparably high mass of the muon (≈ 207 · <jats:italic>m<jats:sub>e</jats:sub>\r\n                  </jats:italic>) has two important effects, (i) the reduced mass of the system becomes more important, and (ii) the muon is localized much closer to the nucleus. Thus, muonic hydrogen is not only excellently suitable for evaluating highly precise quantum electrodynamic (QED) calculations, but may also be used for assessing new approaches including finite nuclear size (FNS) effects to evaluate the proton structure and improve calculation schemes for the hyperfine splittings of many-particle systems, as e.g. to be implemented in density functional theory (DFT) software packages. Here, starting from Dirac’s equation we calculate the relativistic hyperfine splitting of the ground state and several excited states of muonic hydrogen analytically for different charge and magnetization models. The FNS related hyperfine shifts are compared with the differences between QED calculations and experimental measurements. This comparison also allows to unravel the role of the reduced mass, which is on one hand crucial in case of muonic atoms, but on the other hand is by no means well defined in relativistic quantum mechanics.</jats:p>"}],"_id":"61353","publisher":"IOP Publishing","user_id":"16199","volume":3027,"status":"public","citation":{"ieee":"K. The Stellarium Gornergrat is such a telescope. In addition to pure observation, it offers a user-friendly interface and teaching modules so that astronomical and astrophysical projects can be integrated into everyday school life without any special prior knowledge and without requiring a lot of time. However, for physics, there is a lack of systematically surveyed and evidence-based seminars that specifically take into account relevant research findings. Thus, we developed a research-based seminar on the effective use of digital media in physics classrooms and investigated its effects on pre-service teachers (PSTs) professional competencies in a mixed-methods design. Our quantitative analyses of different competence components surveyed in a pre-post-design indicate that the seminar leads to an increase in motivation to use digital media in the physics classroom. Nevertheless, no significant increase in digital-media PCK was found, which could be due to the small sample. The seminar design, however, was predominantly evaluated positively by experts and PSTs in guided interviews. Therefore, we here derive a rigorous, non-perturbative scheme starting from Dirac’s equation which allows to calculate the contribution of the orbital HFI for complex structures including heavy atoms with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Using the PAW formalism, the method has been implemented in the software package Quantum ESPRESSO. We show that the ‘orbital part’ actually scales with SOC strength if orbital quenching is hindered by low local symmetry, i.e. in case of dimers or atoms at surfaces. This holds true in particular when the unpaired electron is localized in quasi-atomic <jats:italic>p</jats:italic>-like orbitals. To compute the CSS for a given contour, it is systematically convolved (smoothed) with Gaussians with increasing standard deviation. The convolutions are computationally expensive, especially for large and high resolution contours, but can be approximated using box filtering (also known as mean and average filtering). Together with running sums, the convolutions can be accelerated by 2–3 magnitudes without significant loss of precision. Nonetheless, box filtering has not been systematically investigated in connection with CSS computation. In this work, we present a theoretical and experimental analysis of different box-filtering techniques in this context and conclude which is the most efficient implementation. Both diagonal and off-diagonal interactions representing real and virtual processes with acoustic phonons via deformation potential and piezoelectric coupling are taken into account. However, GaN layers grown on Si(111) substrates suffer from high tensile stress that can lead to cracking at layer thicknesses exceeding 1 μm. Another challenge is the high dislocation density of GaN layers grown on Si(111) which is detrimental to device performance. In this paper we show that a step graded AlGaN buffer layer can compensate tensile stress, avoiding cracking, and at the same time reduce the dislocation density. An additional SiNx interlayer in the GaN layer is shown to further reduce the dislocation density down to the high 108 /cm². Weak beam dark field TEM was used to study the dislocation reduction in cross sectional samples and for comparison of the step graded AlGaN buffer layer structure to a continuously graded one.
