  abstract     = {{<jats:p>The alignment of liquid crystals on surfaces plays a central role in optimizing their performances. In this work, a cutting-edge nano-lithography-based method to control the local orientation of a thermotropic liquid crystal is applied to easily available commercial standard materials and evaluated. Parallel nanogrooves on a substrate, created through 3D nanoprinting in a negative-tone photoresin optimized for two-photon polymerization are used for this purpose. Azimuthal anchoring energies of the order from 10<jats:sup>−6</jats:sup> J/m<jats:sup>2</jats:sup> to 10<jats:sup>−5</jats:sup> J/m<jats:sup>2</jats:sup> are found, depending on the spacing, width and depth of the grooves. In part, these values are larger than those reported previously for another photopolymer. Both uniform alignment and spatial patterns of different alignment directions can be realized. Electro-optic studies confirm the suitability of the method for electrically addressable photonic applications and indicate strong polar anchoring.</jats:p>}},

  abstract     = {{<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>After 50 years, there is still an ongoing debate about the Limits to Growth (LtG) study. This paper recalibrates the 2005 World3‐03 model. The input parameters are changed to better match empirical data on world development. An iterative method is used to compute and optimize different parameter sets. This improved parameter set results in a World3 simulation that shows the same overshoot and collapse mode in the coming decade as the original business as usual scenario of the LtG standard run. The main effect of the recalibration update is to raise the peaks of most variables and move them a few years into the future. The parameters with the largest relative changes are those related to industrial capital lifetime, pollution transmission delay, and urban‐industrial land development time.</jats:p>}},

  abstract     = {{Iron oxide nanoparticles are very interesting for many applications in different industrial sectors. A promising
process to manufacture these nanoparticles is flame spray pyrolysis (FSP). A lack of understanding of the
individual sub-processes in FSP makes it challenging to tailor nanoparticle properties. This work provides
insights into the formation of iron oxide nanoparticles in a turbulent spray flame using Large Eddy Simulations
(LES), which are based on a comprehensive model, including customized submodels. Highlights are the
adaption of a turbulent combustion model and a bivariate hybrid method of moments for modeling nanoparticle
dynamics. The work focuses on the SpraySyn burner, which is a standardized laboratory burner and was
operated with a precursor-solvent mixture of ethanol and iron(III) nitrate nonahydrate. For studying the
relevance of precursor chemistry, LES using an evaporation-limited precursor chemistry model is compared
with a model that includes detailed iron chemistry. A further novelty is the inclusion of adsorption in the
simulation, which defines a third model for comparison. Sufficient validation is achieved for the undoped LES
using experimental data from the literature. A strong impact of the detailed iron chemistry and adsorption
is found on the precursor consumption and the aggregate and primary particle formation. Comparing the
particle diameters with experimental measurements from the literature and data generated for this work is
found unsuitable to asses the precursor chemistry model and revealed an urgent need for future experimental
and numerical research. This work serves as a step forward in realizing a reliable model.}},

  abstract     = {{Cooperative Driving requires ultra-reliable communications, and it is now clear that no single technology will ever be able to satisfy such stringent requirements, if only because active jamming can kill (almost) any wireless technology. Cooperative driving with multiple communication technologies which complement each other opens new spaces for research and development, but also poses several challenges. The work we present tackles the fallback and recovery mechanisms that the longitudinal controlling system of a platoon of vehicles can implement as a distributed system with multiple communication interfaces. We present a protocol and procedure to correctly compute the safe transition between different controlling algorithms, down to autonomous (or manual) driving when no communication is possible. To empower the study, we also develop a new version of PLEXE, which is an integral part of this contribution as the only Open Source, free simulation tool that enables the study of such systems with a modular approach, and that we deem offers the community the possibility of boosting research in this field. The results we present demonstrate the feasibility of safe fallback, but also highlight that such complex systems require careful design choices, as naïve approaches can lead to instabilities or even collisions, and that such design can only be done with appropriate in-silico experiments.}},

  abstract     = {{Erfolg und Misserfolg eines Unternehmens werden maßgeblich durch getroffene Entscheidungen beeinflusst. Daher verlassen sich Entscheider oft auf Entscheidungsunterstützungssysteme, die durch Datensimulation, -optimierung und -visualisierung bei der Identifizierung von geeigneten Entscheidungen unterstützen. Für eine optimale Unterstützung muss ein Entscheidungsunterstützungssystem (EUS) jedoch auf den Entscheidungsprozess eines Entscheiders abgestimmt sein und verfügbare Daten, Optimierungsziele, persönliche Präferenzen sowie weitere Einflussfaktoren berücksichtigen. EUS-Entwickler können aufgrund der Komplexität und Volatilität von Geschäftsumgebungen allerdings nicht alle potenziellen Entscheidungsprozesse während des Entwurfs eines EUS vorhersehen, wodurch ein EUS einem Entscheider häufig nur unzureichende Anpassungsmöglichkeiten an den individuellen Entscheidungsprozess bietet. Die Einzelanfertigung eines EUS, das auf einen Entscheidungsprozess zugeschnitten ist, ist ein kosten- und zeitintensives Unterfangen aufgrund der begrenzten Verfügbarkeit von Softwareentwicklern oder Missverständnissen zwischen Entwicklern und Entscheidern während der Entwicklung. Daher geben sich Entscheider möglicherweise mit einem handelsüblichen EUS zufrieden, das nicht vollständig mit ihrem Entscheidungsprozess übereinstimmt, suboptimale Entscheidungen begünstigt und so den Unternehmenserfolg negativ beeinflusst.   abstract     = {{Multiobjective optimization plays an increasingly important role in modern applications, where several criteria are often of equal importance. The task in multiobjective optimization and multiobjective optimal control is therefore to compute the set of optimal compromises (the Pareto set) between the conflicting objectives. The advances in algorithms and the increasing interest in Pareto-optimal solutions have led to a wide range of new applications related to optimal and feedback control - potentially with non-smoothness both on the level of the objectives or in the system dynamics. This results in new challenges such as dealing with expensive models (e.g., governed by partial differential equations (PDEs)) and developing dedicated algorithms handling the non-smoothness. Since in contrast to single-objective optimization, the Pareto set generally consists of an infinite number of solutions, the computational effort can quickly become challenging, which is particularly problematic when the objectives are costly to evaluate or when a solution has to be presented very quickly. This article gives an overview of recent developments in the field of multiobjective optimization of non-smooth PDE-constrained problems.   abstract     = {{Füllkörper spielen in industriellen Trennprozessen eine wichtige Rolle bspw. bei der Reinigung industrieller Abgase durch Absorption. Die Trennleistung von Füllkörperkolonnen wird üblicherweise mittels vereinfachter Stufenmodelle ermittelt, deren Modellparameter experimentell bestimmt werden müssen. Dies stellt eine große Schwäche von Stufenmodellen dar, da diese Parameterim Allgemeinen nicht auf verschiedene Stoffsysteme und Füllkörpertypen übertragbar sind.In dieser Arbeit wird ein Modell, basierend auf dem hydrodynamischen Analogieansatz, zur Beschreibung von Absorptionsvorgängen in Füllkörperkolonnen vorgestellt. Dabei ist die Geometrie der festen Phase direkt abhängig von der Füllkörpergeometrie und der Stochastik der Schüttung. Die tatsächlichen Strömungsverhältnisse in Füllkörperkolonnen werden erfasst und durch eine Kombination vereinfachter charakteristischer Strömungsformen reproduziert. Dies erlaubt die Verwendung rigoroser Transportgleichung. Dadurch enthält das Modell weniger experimentell zu ermittelnde Parameter und ist damit unabhängiger von Experimenten als vereinfachte Stufenmodelle. Das Modell wurde gegen experimentelle Daten zur CO2-Absorption in wässrige Natronlauge validiert. Mit dem entwickelten Modell wurde anschließend eine Parameterstudie durchgeführt, die der Unterstützung der Entwicklung neuer Füllkörpergeometrien dient. Dazu wurde eine Simulationsstudie durchgeführt, die den Einfluss der Füllkörpergeometrie auf die Trennleistung untersucht.}},
