Then, we approximate both problems using temporal discretization. Additionally, we introduce a secant form considering the nonlinearity of elasto-plastic constitutive equations, which is approximated by a tangent form. Finally, we obtain numerical primal and dual solutions and their corresponding error approximations of discretized primal and dual problems, allowing to build several goal-oriented a posteriori error estimators on temporal and spatial adaptive refinement by inserting primal solutions, dual solutions and their error approximations as arguments in residuals of both weak forms as well as in the secant form of the bilinear residual.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
Findings
\r\n
An elasto-plastic material is investigated in a framework of goal-oriented error estimator by using separately several methods of error representation to deal with either temporal or spatial adaptive refinement, as well as with both refinements leading to an effective reduction of computational effort. Specifically, new error representations based on goal-oriented error estimators are presented and obtained from primal and dual residuals, which use only primal solutions or only dual solutions or a combination of primal and dual solutions as arguments. Error representations obtained from primal residuals and evaluated using only primal arguments do not require the formulation of a dual problem.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
Research limitations/implications
\r\n
The effectiveness of the different proposed methods is illustrated by an example of a perforated sheet for adaptive spatial refinement where new mesh adaptation methods of error representation are compared against existing mesh adaptation methods such as uniform mesh refinement, mesh refinement based on gradient indicators and adjoint-based methods in literature. This inverse problem is implemented as a nonlinear regression-type optimization problem, in which the simulation signals are fitted to the measurement signals. These signals consist of displacement responses in waveguides, focusing on hollow cylindrical geometries to enhance the simulation efficiency. To accelerate the optimization and reduce the number of model evaluations and wait times, we propose two novel methods. First, we introduce an adaptation of the Levenberg–Marquardt method derived from a geometrical interpretation of the least-squares optimization problem. Second, we introduce an improved objective function based on the autocorrelated envelopes of the measurement and simulation signals. Given that this study primarily relies on simulation data to quantify optimization convergence, we aggregate the expected ranges of realistic material parameters and derive their distributions to ensure the reproducibility of optimizations with proper measurements. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our objective function modification and step adaptation for various materials with isotropic material symmetry by comparing them with the Broyden–Fletcher–Goldfarb–Shanno method. In all cases, our method reduces the total number of model evaluations, thereby shortening the time to identify the material parameters.","lang":"eng"}]},{"publication_identifier":{"isbn":["978-3-032-08886-4"]},"status":"public","title":"Rules and Reasoning - 9th International Joint Conference, RuleML+RR 2025, Istanbul, Turkey, September 22-24, 2025, Proceedings","year":"2026","intvolume":" 16144","date_updated":"2026-02-04T07:13:38Z","_id":"63860","series_title":"Lecture Notes in Computer Science","publisher":"Springer","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"volume":16144,"editor":[{"full_name":"Hogan, Aidan","first_name":"Aidan","last_name":"Hogan"},{"full_name":"Satoh, Ken","last_name":"Satoh","first_name":"Ken"},{"full_name":"Dag, Hasan","first_name":"Hasan","last_name":"Dag"},{"last_name":"Turhan","first_name":"Anni-Yasmin","full_name":"Turhan, Anni-Yasmin","id":"104470"},{"full_name":"Roman, Dumitru","first_name":"Dumitru","last_name":"Roman"},{"full_name":"Soylu, Ahmet","last_name":"Soylu","first_name":"Ahmet"}],"user_id":"117185","doi":"10.1007/978-3-032-08887-1","citation":{"chicago":"Hogan, Aidan, Ken Satoh, Hasan Dag, Anni-Yasmin Turhan, Dumitru Roman, and Ahmet Soylu, eds. <i>Rules and Reasoning - 9th International Joint Conference, RuleML+RR 2025, Istanbul, Turkey, September 22-24, 2025, Proceedings</i>. However, the results are conflicting. We investigated serum leptin levels in children and adolescents (11 to 18.9 years) with psychiatric disorders (\n n\n                     = 363). Absolute and relative (body-mass-index (BMI)-, sex- and pubertal-stage-adjusted z-scores using reference values of healthy children and adolescents) leptin levels of different patient groups according to diagnosis were compared. The association between leptin levels and depression (Beck Depression Inventory-II) and anxiety (Child Behavior Checklist and Youth Self Report) was examined using regression analysis. Leptin z-scores were higher in patients with psychiatric disorders than in healthy controls (median 1.50,\n p\n                     &lt; .001). Neither absolute nor relative leptin levels were related to depressive or anxiety symptoms in regression models adjusted for sex and BMI. Significantly elevated BMI-, sex- and puberty-stage-adjusted leptin levels were observed in children and adolescents with psychiatric disorders compared to a reference sample. Further controlled studies are needed to confirm and explain this finding. Its growing computational demands make energy efficiency a critical concern. Recent studies demonstrate FPGAs’ superior performance and energy efficiency for computing primitive ERIs, but the computation of highly contracted ERIs introduces significant algorithmic complexity and new design challenges for FPGA acceleration. In this work, we present SORCERI, the first streaming overlay acceleration for highly contracted ERI computations on FPGAs. SORCERI introduces a novel streaming Rys computing unit to calculate roots and weights of Rys polynomials on-chip, and a streaming contraction unit for the contraction of primitive ERIs. This shifts the design bottleneck from limited CPU-FPGA communication bandwidth to available FPGA computation resources. To address practical deployment challenges for a large number of quartet classes, we design three streaming overlays, together with an efficient memory transpose optimization, to cover the 21 most commonly used quartet classes in realistic atomistic simulations. To address the new computation constraints, we use flexible calculation stages with a free-running streaming architecture to achieve high DSP utilization and good timing closure.Experiments demonstrate that SORCERI achieves an average 5.96x, 1.99x, and 1.16x better performance per watt than libint on a 64-core AMD EPYC 7713 CPU, libintx on an Nvidia A40 GPU, and SERI, the prior best-performing FPGA design for primitive ERIs. Furthermore, SORCERI reaches a peak throughput of 44.11 GERIS (109 ERIs per second) that is 1.52x, 1.13x, and 1.93x greater than libint, libintx and SERI, respectively. Using data from a real estate corporation, we simulate the effects of a wealth tax on cash flows from the rental operations. The level of detail of the data enables us to conduct analyses at the annual, regional and year of construction level. A comparison with real estate data from other sources supports external validity. The results of the simulation show that the introduction of a wealth tax can significantly reduce the cash flow from rental operations and lead to liquidity problems. On average over all observations, a wealth tax rate of 2% leads to a negative cash flow after all costs. In general, this finding implies that growth-oriented real estate is more affected by a wealth tax in terms of liquidity than rental yield-oriented real estate. Particularly in large cities with high market values but relatively low rents, the liquidity effects can be more than three times as high as in rural or industrial regions – potentially leading to a relative loss of investment attractiveness. As a wealth tax is decoupled from rental income, the tax burden is very sensitive to market developments, including the interest rate environment. As a result, investments in residential rental real estate are exposed to additional uncertainty. This additional tax uncertainty might impair the willingness to invest and should therefore be taken into account in political discussions on the reintroduction of a wealth tax."}]},{"publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2026-02-17T11:22:49Z","title":"A fully implicit mean-field damage formulation with consistent linearization at large deformations","year":"2026","status":"public","publication_identifier":{"issn":["1081-2865","1741-3028"]},"author":[{"id":"93591","full_name":"Zhan, Yingjie","first_name":"Yingjie","last_name":"Zhan"},{"last_name":"Caylak","first_name":"Ismail","full_name":"Caylak, Ismail"},{"id":"106876","full_name":"Ostwald, Richard","last_name":"Ostwald","first_name":"Richard","orcid":"0000-0003-2147-8444"},{"full_name":"Mahnken, Rolf","first_name":"Rolf","last_name":"Mahnken","id":"335"},{"full_name":"Barth, Enrico","last_name":"Barth","first_name":"Enrico"},{"full_name":"Uhlmann, Eckart","last_name":"Uhlmann","first_name":"Eckart"}],"user_id":"85414","doi":"10.1177/10812865261420809","article_number":"10812865261420809","publisher":"SAGE Publications","_id":"64187","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"quality_controlled":"1","abstract":[{"text":"
Carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRPs) have become increasingly significant in recent decades due to their remarkable mechanical properties and lightweight nature. This study aims to advance the understanding and simulation of CFRP behavior through the development of a hyperelastic-plastic-damage homogenization method combined with mean-field theory. The material responses of both the fiber and matrix are modeled using strain energy functions that account for damage evolution, while a complete linearization of the homogenization process is derived to ensure the consistent implementation of the Newton–Raphson iteration scheme in large deformation simulations. The innovative aspect of this work lies in the constitutive linearization for the hyperelastic-plastic-damage formulation within a mean-field homogenization framework, providing an efficient Newton algorithm for modeling the nonlinear behavior of CFRP. A failure criterion for the hyperelastic model of fibers is introduced, along with a damage saturation variable in rate form for the matrix, effectively capturing damage evolution. Through discrete formulations for the homogenization, the proposed model’s capability is demonstrated via three numerical examples and validated against experimental investigations, proving its effectiveness and reliability in simulating CFRP damage.
","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Mathematics and Mechanics of Solids","citation":{"short":"Y. The objective is to determine mechanical properties of coating layer in order to incorporate its influence into numerical simulation models for load-bearing adhesive joints. For this purpose, both single-lap joints (SLJ) and modified thick adherend shear specimens (TASS) with defined CED coating layers were produced and tested under quasi-static loading conditions. Additionally, the deposition process was analysed in terms of coating thickness evolution as a function of deposition time and applied voltage. The specimens were pre-cured to reduce gas inclusions from evaporating solvents in the CED coating layer. The pre-curing temperature was determined using DSC. The results indicate that the modified TASS configuration is particularly suited for the reproducible evaluation of the shear load-bearing capacity. In comparison to the SLJ, it favours the degassing of solvents through the installation of grooves. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that gas-induced defect zones originating from the electrochemical deposition process significantly compromise joint performance. The experimental and process methodology developed in this study enables isolated characterisation of the coating layer and provides a solid foundation for simulation of coated adhesive joints.","lang":"eng"}],"quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"bibtex":"@article{Hofmann_Teutenberg_Meschut_2026, title={Method development for the mechanical characterisation of cathodic electrodeposition coatings for numerical simulation of bonded joints}, DOI={<a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1080/00218464.2026.2621198\">10.1080/00218464.2026.2621198</a>}, journal={The Journal of Adhesion}, publisher={Informa UK Limited}, author={Hofmann, Julia and Teutenberg, Dominik and Meschut, Gerson}, year={2026}, pages={1–16} }","short":"J. This study addresses the formation of “viscous fingering” instabilities in structural adhesive joints, which are induced by thermally driven relative displacements during the liquid phase of the adhesive. Using a component-like specimen “bridge specimen,” the dependency of this phenomenon on process temperature and structural stiffness (rivet distance) was characterized. Experimental results reveal that while the relative displacement scales cubically with the free buckling length, the resulting adhesive area reduction follows an exponential trend, leading to a loss of effective bond area of up to 79%, which significantly compromises the joint strength in automotive applications. To predict these process-induced defects, a thermo-chemo-viscoelastic-viscoplastic adhesive model implemented in LS-DYNA was applied. The model combines curing kinetics, viscoelastic relaxation, and pressure-dependent plasticity and features a geometric damage parameter (D) that captures the adhesive area reduction caused by viscous fingering as an exponential function of the accumulated normal strain in the liquid phase. This damage parameter, calibrated on base-specimen level, was transferred to the component geometry. The simulation demonstrated high predictive accuracy with a maximum deviation of the adhesive area reduction of 3.1% compared to experimental data. This validates the model’s capability to predict manufacturing-induced damage in complex hybrid structures solely based on thermal boundary conditions."}],"page":"1-24","publisher":"Informa UK Limited","_id":"64916","ddc":["620","670","660"],"user_id":"65415","status":"public","has_accepted_license":"1","oa":"1","file_date_updated":"2026-03-14T18:50:31Z","citation":{"short":"M. Self-pierce riveting has become a prevalent technique for sheet metal assembly, especially in automotive applications. Achieving proper joint geometry and adequate load-bearing capacity depends on appropriate tool selection and precise process control. Material properties and condition also play a significant role in process performance. To accommodate the inevitable variations in component characteristics during production, a robust and stable joining process is essential. The study focuses on investigating the influence of preformed joining partners on the joining process and the joint's load capacity. An EN AW-6014 in T4 condition, as well as an HCT590X, are used as materials for this study. For this purpose, an exemplary process chain consisting of the steps of performing, joining, and shear load testing is studied. Each process step is implemented using an FE model to predict the outcome of subsequent steps. For analysis of the influence of pre-strain, an optimisation software is used to plan and execute variations of the process. These variations are used to create a meta-model that can describe the relationships between pre-forming and characteristic parameters of subsequent process steps. The resulting model is validated by comparing simulation and experimental data. Finally, in a novel approach, the robustness of the presented process chain is analyzed in terms of a tolerable performance level for the joining partners."}],"date_created":"2026-03-16T12:30:39Z","keyword":["Self-pierce riveting","FE modelling","Plastic pre-deformation","Meta modelling"],"type":"journal_article","department":[{"_id":"9"}],"status":"public","publisher":"Elsevier BV","_id":"64985","user_id":"76631","volume":13,"citation":{"mla":"Ludwig, Jean-Patrick, et al. “Numerical Analysis of the Robustness of Self-Pierce Riveting with Pre-Formed Joining Partners.” <i>Journal of Advanced Joining Processes</i>, vol. 13, 100391, Elsevier BV, 2026, doi:<a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jajp.2026.100391\">10.1016/j.jajp.2026.100391</a>.","ama":"Ludwig J-P, Tolke E, Schlichter MC, Bobbert M, Meschut G. Although the available lithography techniques are constantly being advanced to push the feature sizes down to the few-nanometer scale, such developments are associated with many technological and economic challenges. Combining established top-down lithography with bottom-up self-assembly strategies has the potential to overcome those challenges and enable the manipulation of matter with molecular precision. One of the most exciting approaches in this regard is to harness the programmability of DNA self-assembly to create precise DNA nanostructure masks to be used in the lithographic patterning of diverse substrates. DNA nanotechnology has provided us with a versatile toolbox for the high-yield synthesis of 2D and 3D nanostructures with complex, user-defined shapes at unprecedented molecular accuracy. Consequently, the last decade has seen intense research efforts aimed at transferring such DNA nanostructure shapes into functional organic and inorganic materials and we have now arrived at a point where sophisticated molecular lithography approaches utilize DNA nanostructure masks for the fabrication of plasmonic surfaces for metamaterials and sensing applications. This review summarizes how the spatial information of such DNA nanostructure masks can be transferred into various organic and inorganic materials through selective etching and deposition steps. The review also discusses recent developments toward all-purpose molecular lithography schemes and highlights promising extensions of the discussed methods toward new materials systems and application fields.
","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics","citation":{"short":"A.C. With the micropolar model, size effects can be considered and the boundary value problem can be regularized when localization effects occur. In order to map the microrotations, an additional strain measure and an additional stress are introduced. For simulation of plasticity, it is possible to define one yield function, and thus one plastic multiplier as well as one equivalent plastic strain occur. This approach is known as the single-surface plasticity approach. The macro- and micro-stresses are coupled in a common flow function. On the other hand, there is the so-called double-surface plasticity when one yield function, one plastic multiplier, and one equivalent plastic strain, respectively, are introduced for each of the macro- and micro-variables. The coupling of the macro- and micro-variables is established by a possible coupling of both yield functions. The purpose of this paper is to compare both approaches and to identify similarities and differences.
"}],"publisher":"Springer Science and Business Media LLC","_id":"65491","volume":96,"user_id":"85414","status":"public","citation":{"short":"A.
