In this context, mechanical joining technology clinching offers a fast and energy-efficient procedure for assembling sheet metals, being a proper alternative to established joining methods, such as spot welding. However, the design of clinch points is a challenge, which is partly supported by numerical or data-based approaches for optimal tool dimensions assuring proper joint characteristics. While this is usually done for an ideal environment, real joining processes are characterized by multiple inevitably varying parameters, e.g. of the material, which have a significant impact on the quality of clinch points. Therefore, this contribution addresses the current gap by analyzing the effect of parameter variations or uncertainties on the resulting joint characteristics and studying the impact of the nominal tool design. Thus, an efficient meta-model-based variation simulation procedure is proposed and used for analyzing the effect of different tool design configurations and variation scenarios. Based on the results, it was found that varying process parameters have a strong impact on the resulting joint characteristics, whereby the effect significantly depends on the nominal tool design. This reveals the potential for a robust tool design and implies that the nominal tool design and the tolerancing of parameters should be done simultaneously for a reliable virtual joining point design without extensive iterations and physical tests.","lang":"eng"}],"citation":{"chicago":"Zirngibl, C, S Goetz, and S Wartzack. “Influence of Process Variations on Clinch Joint Characteristics Considering the Effect of the Nominal Tool Design.” Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part E: Journal of Process Mechanical Engineering, 2024. https://doi.org/10.1177/09544089241259347.","short":"C. The goal is to reconfigure a set of tiles into a specific shape termed an icicle. The icicle, identified as a dense, hole-free structure, is strategically chosen to function as an intermediate shape for more intricate shape formation tasks. It is designed for easy exploration by a finite state agent, enabling the identification of tiles that can be lifted without breaking connectivity. Compared to the line shape, the icicle presents distinct advantages, including a reduced diameter and the presence of multiple removable tiles. We propose an algorithm that transforms an arbitrary initially connected tile structure into an icicle in 𝒪(n³) steps, matching the runtime of the line formation algorithm from prior work. Our theoretical contribution is accompanied by an extensive experimental analysis, indicating that our algorithm decreases the diameter of tile structures on average.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"3rd Symposium on Algorithmic Foundations of Dynamic Networks (SAND 2024)","department":[{"_id":"79"}],"type":"conference","keyword":["Programmable Matter","Shape Formation","3D Model","Finite Automaton"],"date_created":"2024-06-18T07:45:34Z"},{"citation":{"apa":"Kostitsyna, I., Liedtke, D. In this model, a single agent with strictly limited viewing range and the computational capability of a deterministic finite automaton can act on passive tiles by picking up a tile, moving, and placing it at some spot. The goal of the coating problem is to fill each node of some surface graph of size n with a tile. We first solve the problem on a restricted class of graphs with a single tile type, and then use constantly many tile types to encode this graph in certain surface graphs capturing the surface of 3D objects. Our algorithm requires O(n^2) steps, which is worst-case optimal compared to an agent with global knowledge and no memory restrictions.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Structural Information and Communication Complexity","department":[{"_id":"79"}],"keyword":["Programmable Matter","Coating","Finite Automaton","3D"],"type":"book_chapter","date_created":"2024-06-18T07:36:04Z","date_updated":"2024-07-18T09:32:58Z","publication_status":"published","author":[{"last_name":"Kostitsyna","first_name":"Irina","full_name":"Kostitsyna, Irina"},{"id":"55557","full_name":"Liedtke, David Jan","first_name":"David Jan","last_name":"Liedtke"},{"id":"20792","full_name":"Scheideler, Christian","last_name":"Scheideler","first_name":"Christian"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["0302-9743","1611-3349"],"isbn":["9783031606021","9783031606038"]},"title":"Universal Coating by 3D Hybrid Programmable Matter","year":"2024","doi":"10.1007/978-3-031-60603-8_21","language":[{"iso":"eng"}]},{"date_updated":"2024-07-30T11:52:18Z","status":"public","year":"2024","title":"Stabilisierung von O2-sensitiven Photolumineszenzsignalen durch Temperaturvariation","publication_identifier":{"isbn":["978-3-910600-01-0"]},"author":[{"full_name":"Kothe, Linda","last_name":"Kothe","first_name":"Linda"},{"last_name":"Ester","first_name":"Stephan","full_name":"Ester, Stephan"},{"first_name":"Michael","last_name":"Poeplau","full_name":"Poeplau, Michael"},{"full_name":"Wengenroth, Marc","first_name":"Marc","last_name":"Wengenroth"},{"id":"23547","full_name":"Tiemann, Michael","last_name":"Tiemann","first_name":"Michael","orcid":"0000-0003-1711-2722"}],"user_id":"23547","doi":"10.5162/sensoren2024/A3.1","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1"}],"page":"66 - 71","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"_id":"55392","quality_controlled":"1","abstract":[{"lang":"ger","text":"In dieser Arbeit werden Untersuchungen zur sauerstoffabhängigen Photolumineszenz von Zink-Zinn-Oxid-Partikeln präsentiert, welche perspektivisch für die optische Sauerstoffdetektion eingesetzt werden sollen. Typically, simulations are used to consider a variety of potential extreme weather scenarios in preparedness phases. Due to required computing power, duration and high efforts in parameterizing such tools are hardly used within response situations. Enhanced simulation models and surrogate models based on machine learning technologies carry potentials to overcome\r\nthese challenges. An approach is presented that adopts simulation for the case of flooding events. It considers all phases from demand situation in command posts through advanced parameter space exploration to advanced visualization of simulation results in Augmented Reality. Initial evaluation results are presented, complemented by conclusions on incorporated technologies. Our virtual environment consists of a digital shadow of the LMD-w production site enriched with additional measurement data shown on both static as well as handheld virtual displays. Users can explore the production site by enhanced teleportation capabilities that enable them to change their scale as well as their elevation above the ground plane. In an exploratory user study with 22 participants, we demonstrate that our system is generally suitable for the supervision of LMD-w processes while generating low task load and cybersickness. Therefore, it serves as a first promising step towards the successful application of virtual reality technology in the comparatively young field of additive manufacturing."}],"main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"10.18420/vrar2024_0006","year":"2024","title":"Virtual Reality as a Tool for Monitoring Additive Manufacturing Processes via Digital Shadows","author":[{"full_name":"Rupp, Daniel","first_name":"Daniel","last_name":"Rupp"},{"full_name":"Kuhlen, Torsten W.","first_name":"Torsten W.","last_name":"Kuhlen"},{"full_name":"Rarbach, Sven","first_name":"Sven","last_name":"Rarbach","id":"67999"},{"first_name":"Dominik","last_name":"Wiechel","full_name":"Wiechel, Dominik","id":"67161"},{"orcid":"http://orcid.org/0000-0001-8778-2989","first_name":"Jens","last_name":"Pottebaum","full_name":"Pottebaum, Jens","id":"405"},{"full_name":"Weidemann, Tizia","first_name":"Tizia","last_name":"Weidemann"},{"last_name":"Tran","first_name":"Duc Thanh","full_name":"Tran, Duc Thanh"},{"last_name":"Day","first_name":"Robin","full_name":"Day, Robin"},{"full_name":"Zielinski, Jonas","first_name":"Jonas","last_name":"Zielinski"},{"last_name":"König","first_name":"Valentina","full_name":"König, Valentina"},{"last_name":"Bremer","first_name":"Jan","full_name":"Bremer, Jan"},{"first_name":"Thomas","last_name":"Kosche","full_name":"Kosche, Thomas"},{"last_name":"Grimm","first_name":"Andreas","full_name":"Grimm, Andreas"},{"full_name":"Bergs, Thomas","last_name":"Bergs","first_name":"Thomas"},{"id":"47565","last_name":"Gräßler","orcid":"0000-0001-5765-971X","first_name":"Iris","full_name":"Gräßler, Iris"},{"full_name":"Weissker, Tim","last_name":"Weissker","first_name":"Tim"}],"publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2024-09-23T09:31:14Z","oa":"1","citation":{"short":"D. However, the utilization of their network capabilities is often challenging and error-prone because the whole network stack and communication patterns have to be implemented and managed on the FPGAs. Also, this approach conceptually involves a trade-off between the performance potential of improved communication and the impact of resource consumption for communication infrastructure, since the utilized resources on the FPGAs could otherwise be used for computations. In this work, we investigate this trade-off, firstly, by using synthetic benchmarks to evaluate the different configuration options of the communication framework ACCL and their impact on communication latency and throughput. Finally, we use our findings to implement a shallow water simulation whose scalability heavily depends on low-latency communication. With a suitable configuration of ACCL, good scaling behavior can be shown to all 48 FPGAs installed in the system. Overall, the results show that the availability of inter-FPGA communication frameworks as well as the configurability of framework and network stack are crucial to achieve the best application performance with low latency communication.
","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Lecture Notes in Computer Science","department":[{"_id":"27"},{"_id":"518"}],"type":"book_chapter","date_created":"2024-10-14T07:51:51Z","status":"public","user_id":"3145","publisher":"Springer Nature Switzerland","_id":"56606","quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"mla":"Meyer, Marius, et al. “Optimizing Communication for Latency Sensitive HPC Applications on up to 48 FPGAs Using ACCL.” Lecture Notes in Computer Science, Springer Nature Switzerland, 2024, doi:10.1007/978-3-031-69766-1_9.","apa":"Meyer, M., Kenter, T., Petrica, L., O’Brien, K., Blott, M., & Plessl, C. A bending beam is used as a nonlinear test object. A design and a surrogate model of the test rig are shown and parameterized based on test rig measurements. The force control algorithm using input/output linearisation is described and implemented in Matlab/Simulink for simulative validation studies. Conclusions drawn from the mathematical description of the problem as well as simulation results show that the design of the contact between shaker and test object is crucial to achieve a high control bandwidth and at the same time reduce the energy consumption of the shaker. This leads to the practical application using a novel damping contact element. This study presents a novel approach to prevent expulsion by employing a preheating current. Through characteristic analysis of joint formation under critical welding current, the importance of plastic material encapsulation around the weld nugget (plastic shell) at high temperatures in preventing expulsion is highlighted. To evaluate the effect of preheating on the plastic shell and understand its mechanism in expulsion prevention, a two-dimensional welding simulation model for dissimilar ultra-high strength steel joints was established. The results showed that optimal preheating enhances the thickness of the plastic shell, improving its ability to encapsulate the weld nugget during the primary welding phase, thereby diminishing expulsion risks. Experimental validation confirmed that by employing the optimal preheating current, the maximum nugget diameter was enhanced to 9.42 mm, marking an increase of 13.4 % and extending the weldable current range by 27.5 %. Under quasi-static cross-tensile loading, joints with preheating demonstrated a 7.9 % enhancement in maximum load-bearing capacity compared to joints without preheating, showing a reproducible and complete pull-out failure mode within the heat-affected zone. This study offers a prevention method based on underlying mechanisms, providing a new perspective for future research on welding parameter optimization with the aim of expulsion prevention.","lang":"eng"}],"file":[{"creator":"kekeyang","date_created":"2024-06-23T21:59:20Z","access_level":"closed","file_size":12432409,"file_name":"1-s2.0-S1526612524006145-main.pdf","date_updated":"2024-06-23T21:59:20Z","relation":"main_file","success":1,"content_type":"application/pdf","file_id":"54848"}],"date_created":"2024-06-23T21:58:29Z","keyword":["Expulsion Resistance spot welding Finite element modelling Preheating Weldable current range Ultra-high strength steel"],"type":"journal_article","department":[{"_id":"157"}],"year":"2024","title":"Expulsion prevention in resistance spot welding of dissimilar joints with ultra-high strength steel: An analysis of the mechanism and effect of preheating current","publication_identifier":{"issn":["1526-6125"]},"author":[{"id":"65085","first_name":"Keke","last_name":"Yang","orcid":"0000-0001-9201-9304","full_name":"Yang, Keke"},{"full_name":"El-Sari, Bassel","last_name":"El-Sari","first_name":"Bassel"},{"id":"5974","full_name":"Olfert, Viktoria","last_name":"Olfert","first_name":"Viktoria"},{"full_name":"Wang, Zhuoqun","first_name":"Zhuoqun","last_name":"Wang"},{"last_name":"Biegler","first_name":"Max","full_name":"Biegler, Max"},{"full_name":"Rethmeier, Michael","first_name":"Michael","last_name":"Rethmeier"},{"id":"32056","orcid":"0000-0002-2763-1246","first_name":"Gerson","last_name":"Meschut","full_name":"Meschut, Gerson"}],"publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2024-10-18T06:59:27Z","article_type":"original","intvolume":" 124","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1526612524006145"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"10.1016/j.jmapro.2024.06.034","file_date_updated":"2024-06-23T21:59:20Z","citation":{"apa":"Yang, K., El-Sari, B., Olfert, V., Wang, Z., Biegler, M., Rethmeier, M., & Meschut, G. Die Echtzeit-Verkehrsrekonstruktion approximiert dabei simulationsbasiert den aktuellen Verkehrszustand anhand gegebener Messdaten über dynamische Verkehrszuweisungen.
