In this work, a cutting-edge nano-lithography-based method to control the local orientation of a thermotropic liquid crystal is applied to easily available commercial standard materials and evaluated. Parallel nanogrooves on a substrate, created through 3D nanoprinting in a negative-tone photoresin optimized for two-photon polymerization are used for this purpose. Azimuthal anchoring energies of the order from 10<jats:sup>−6</jats:sup> J/m<jats:sup>2</jats:sup> to 10<jats:sup>−5</jats:sup> J/m<jats:sup>2</jats:sup> are found, depending on the spacing, width and depth of the grooves. In part, these values are larger than those reported previously for another photopolymer. Both uniform alignment and spatial patterns of different alignment directions can be realized. This paper recalibrates the 2005 World3‐03 model. The input parameters are changed to better match empirical data on world development. An iterative method is used to compute and optimize different parameter sets. This improved parameter set results in a World3 simulation that shows the same overshoot and collapse mode in the coming decade as the original business as usual scenario of the LtG standard run. The main effect of the recalibration update is to raise the peaks of most variables and move them a few years into the future. A promising\r\nprocess to manufacture these nanoparticles is flame spray pyrolysis (FSP). A lack of understanding of the\r\nindividual sub-processes in FSP makes it challenging to tailor nanoparticle properties. This work provides\r\ninsights into the formation of iron oxide nanoparticles in a turbulent spray flame using Large Eddy Simulations\r\n(LES), which are based on a comprehensive model, including customized submodels. Highlights are the\r\nadaption of a turbulent combustion model and a bivariate hybrid method of moments for modeling nanoparticle\r\ndynamics. The work focuses on the SpraySyn burner, which is a standardized laboratory burner and was\r\noperated with a precursor-solvent mixture of ethanol and iron(III) nitrate nonahydrate. For studying the\r\nrelevance of precursor chemistry, LES using an evaporation-limited precursor chemistry model is compared\r\nwith a model that includes detailed iron chemistry. A further novelty is the inclusion of adsorption in the\r\nsimulation, which defines a third model for comparison. Sufficient validation is achieved for the undoped LES\r\nusing experimental data from the literature. A strong impact of the detailed iron chemistry and adsorption\r\nis found on the precursor consumption and the aggregate and primary particle formation. Comparing the\r\nparticle diameters with experimental measurements from the literature and data generated for this work is\r\nfound unsuitable to asses the precursor chemistry model and revealed an urgent need for future experimental\r\nand numerical research. Cooperative driving with multiple communication technologies which complement each other opens new spaces for research and development, but also poses several challenges. The work we present tackles the fallback and recovery mechanisms that the longitudinal controlling system of a platoon of vehicles can implement as a distributed system with multiple communication interfaces. We present a protocol and procedure to correctly compute the safe transition between different controlling algorithms, down to autonomous (or manual) driving when no communication is possible. To empower the study, we also develop a new version of PLEXE, which is an integral part of this contribution as the only Open Source, free simulation tool that enables the study of such systems with a modular approach, and that we deem offers the community the possibility of boosting research in this field. EUS-Entwickler können aufgrund der Komplexität und Volatilität von Geschäftsumgebungen allerdings nicht alle potenziellen Entscheidungsprozesse während des Entwurfs eines EUS vorhersehen, wodurch ein EUS einem Entscheider häufig nur unzureichende Anpassungsmöglichkeiten an den individuellen Entscheidungsprozess bietet. Die Einzelanfertigung eines EUS, das auf einen Entscheidungsprozess zugeschnitten ist, ist ein kosten- und zeitintensives Unterfangen aufgrund der begrenzten Verfügbarkeit von Softwareentwicklern oder Missverständnissen zwischen Entwicklern und Entscheidern während der Entwicklung. This motivates decision makers to rely on decision support systems for assistance in identifying high-quality decisions using data simulation, optimization, and visualization. However, for optimal assistance, a decision support system (DSS) must align with the decision-making process of a decision maker, which is characterized by available data, optimization goals, personal preferences, and other influences. Unfortunately, the increasing complexity and volatility of business environments prevent DSS developers to anticipate all potential decision-making processes during DSS design, and consequently, to provide decision makers with sufficient customization options. Commissioning a DSS that is tailored to a decision-making process is a cost- and time-intensive undertaking due to limited developer availability or misunderstandings between developers and decision makers. As a result, decision makers may settle for an off-the-shelf DSS that does not fully align with their decision-making process and potentially results in suboptimal decisions, thereby impairing business success.This thesis proposes an approach that enables decision makers to create tailored decision support systems themselves, thereby avoiding the aforementioned misalignment between provided and required decision support. The approach expects DSS developers to provide partial DSS functionality in the form of reusable software services. The task in multiobjective optimization and multiobjective optimal control is therefore to compute the set of optimal compromises (the Pareto set) between the conflicting objectives. The advances in algorithms and the increasing interest in Pareto-optimal solutions have led to a wide range of new applications related to optimal and feedback control - potentially with non-smoothness both on the level of the objectives or in the system dynamics. This results in new challenges such as dealing with expensive models (e.g., governed by partial differential equations (PDEs)) and developing dedicated algorithms handling the non-smoothness. Since in contrast to single-objective optimization, the Pareto set generally consists of an infinite number of solutions, the computational effort can quickly become challenging, which is particularly problematic when the objectives are costly to evaluate or when a solution has to be presented very quickly. This article gives an overview of recent developments in the field of multiobjective optimization of non-smooth PDE-constrained problems. Die Trennleistung von Füllkörperkolonnen wird üblicherweise mittels vereinfachter Stufenmodelle ermittelt, deren Modellparameter experimentell bestimmt werden müssen. Dies stellt eine große Schwäche von Stufenmodellen dar, da diese Parameterim Allgemeinen nicht auf verschiedene Stoffsysteme und Füllkörpertypen übertragbar sind.In dieser Arbeit wird ein Modell, basierend auf dem hydrodynamischen Analogieansatz, zur Beschreibung von Absorptionsvorgängen in Füllkörperkolonnen vorgestellt. Dabei ist die Geometrie der festen Phase direkt abhängig von der Füllkörpergeometrie und der Stochastik der Schüttung. Die tatsächlichen Strömungsverhältnisse in Füllkörperkolonnen werden erfasst und durch eine Kombination vereinfachter charakteristischer Strömungsformen reproduziert. Dies erlaubt die Verwendung rigoroser Transportgleichung. Dadurch enthält das Modell weniger experimentell zu ermittelnde Parameter und ist damit unabhängiger von Experimenten als vereinfachte Stufenmodelle. Das Modell wurde gegen experimentelle Daten zur CO2-Absorption in wässrige Natronlauge validiert. Mit dem entwickelten Modell wurde anschließend eine Parameterstudie durchgeführt, die der Unterstützung der Entwicklung neuer Füllkörpergeometrien dient. Dazu wurde eine Simulationsstudie durchgeführt, die den Einfluss der Füllkörpergeometrie auf die Trennleistung untersucht.","lang":"eng"},{"lang":"eng","text":"Random packings play an important role in industrial separation processes, e.g., for the removal of pollutants from industrial off-gases by absorption. The separation characteristics are commonly predicted by simplified stage models. Such models employ several parameters which have to be determined by experiments. This represents a major weakness of stage models, as, generally, these parameters are not directly transferable to different chemical systems or packing types. In this work, a model based on the hydrodynamic analogy approach is presented to describe absorption processes in packed columns. The geometry of the solid phase is directly dependent on the packing element geometry and the stochasticity of the packing. The actual fluid dynamics in packed columns are captured and reproduced by a combination of simplified characteristic flow patterns. This allows the application of rigorous transport equations. Hence, the model contains fewer parameters to be determined experimentally and is therefore more independent of experiments than simplified stage models. The model was validated against experimental data on CO2 absorption into aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. The developed model was used to support the development of new packing types by \"virtual experiments\".
