text: Current production control systems cannot react appropriately to unknown situations
(e.g. the dispatch of rush jobs). They are only able to react on known situations
with a predefined behaviour. In this paper the paradigm of self-optimisation will
be transferred to the production control level by using a procedure model to design
a self-optimising production control system. The production control is then able
to react autonomously on changing operational conditions and to deduce new reaction
strategies for occurring faults or disturbances. A rule based decision model is
the core of the conceptual design. It is based on known and possible future faults
and deducts reaction strategies. Simultaneously to them, a simulation model will
be proposed, that simulates and evaluates suitable strategies.

text: We investigated an explanation for the length dependence of apparent wall
slip in capillary and slit die experiments that had been implied in earlier studies.
Firstly, we used a very long slit die fitted with six equidistant pressure transducers
and an adjustable outlet. It was found that, all other parameters being equal,
the impact of pressure on the flow behavior of suspensions was not different from
the impact on the unfilled matrix fluid. Particle-related properties, such as
apparent wall slip, were therefore not influenced by pressure as assumed by other
authors. Secondly, we determined wall slip velocities by both the Mooney method
and numerical simulation, based on an implementation of Phillips constitutive
equation for particle migration. This led to a similar length dependence of wall
slip as had been reported in an earlier work. We concluded that this was due to
the transient nature of particle migration and its interrelationship with apparent
wall slip, rather than an influence of pressure.

text: Capillary forces are very important as they exceed in general other adhesion
forces. But at the same time the exact calculation of these forces is very complex,
so often assumptions and approximations are used. Previous research was done with
regard to micrometer sized particles, but the behavior of nanoscale particles
is different. Hence, the results for micrometer sized particles cannot be directly
transferred when considering nanoscale particles. Therefore, a simulation method
was developed to calculate numerically the shape of a rotationally symmetrical
capillary bridge between two spherical particles or a particle and a plate. The
capillary bridge in the gap between the particles is formed due to capillary condensation
and is in thermodynamic equilibrium with the gas phase. Hence the Kelvin equation
and the Young–Laplace equation can be used to calculate the profile of the capillary
bridge, depending on the relative humidity of the surrounding air. The bridge
profile consists of several elements that are determined consecutively and interpolated
linearly. After the shape is determined, the volume and force, divided into capillary
pressure force and surface tension force, can be calculated. The validation of
this numerical model will be shown by comparison with several different analytical
calculations for micrometer-sized particles. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that
two often used approximations, (1) the toroidal approximation and (2) the use
of an effective radius, cannot be used for nanoscale particles without remarkable
mistake. It will be discussed how the capillary force and its components depend
on different parameters, like particle size, relative humidity, contact angle,
and distance, respectively. The rupture of a capillary bridge due to particle
separation will also be presented.

text: '
Primary school years seem to represent a critical period for the
development of overweight and obesity. However, only a few studies have analysed
the prospective relationship between dietary patterns and weight status in children.
The aims of the present study were to identify dietary patterns at the beginning
of and during the primary school period and to examine their relevance to the
development of body composition. Nutritional and anthropometric data from 371
participants of the Dortmund Nutritional and Longitudinally Designed (DONALD)
Study at the beginning (ages 6 and 7 years) and end (ages 10 and 11 years) of
the primary school period were used. Principal component analyses (PCA) were conducted
to identify dietary patterns, which were regressed on changes in BMI and fat mass
index (FMI) between ages 6 and 7 years and ages 10 and 11 years. Reduced rank
regression (RRR) was used to directly extract patterns explaining variation in
changes in BMI and FMI between ages 6 and 7 years and ages 10 and 11 years. PCA
yielded interpretable patterns of dietary changes at the beginning of and during
the primary school period, which were not related to changes in body composition.
Conversely, RRR allowed identifying predictive patterns: higher baseline intakes
of white bread and lower baseline intakes of whole-grain products as well as increases
in the consumption of savoury snacks, sausages and cheese during primary school
years independently predicted increases in BMI and FMI during the primary school
period. In conclusion, selection of unfavourable carbohydrate sources at the beginning
of the primary school period and increases in the consumption of processed savoury
foods during primary school years may adversely affect the development of body
composition during the course of primary school.
'

text: 'Decentralized algorithms are often used in the cooperative robotics field,
especially by large swarm systems. We present a distributed algorithm for a problem
in which a group of autonomous mobile robots must surround a given target. These
robots are oblivious, i.e., they have no memory of the past. They use only local
sensing and need no dedicated communication among themselves. We introduce, then
solve the problem in which the group of autonomous mobile robots must surround
a given target – we call it the “discrete multiorbit target surrounding problem”
(DMTSP). We evaluate our solution using simulation and prove that our solution
invariably ensures that robots enclose the target in finite time. '

text: Radio access networks (RANs) have become one of the largest energy consumers
of communication technology [LLH+13] and their energy consumption is predicted
to increase [FFMB11]. To reduce the energy consumption of RANs different techniques
have been proposed. One of the most promising techniques is the use of a low-power
sleep mode. However, a sleep mode can also reduce the performance. In this dissertation,
I quantify how much energy can be conserved with a sleep mode and which negative
effects it has on the performance of RANs. Additionally, I analyze how a sleep
mode can be enabled more often and how the performance can be kept high. First,
I quantify the effect of power-cycle durations on energy consumption and latency
in an abstract queuing system. This results in a trade-off between energy consumption
and latency for a single base station (BS). Second, I show that considering a
network as a whole (instead of each BS individually) allows the energy consumption
to be reduced even further. After these analyses, which are not specific for RANs,
I study RANs for the rest of the dissertation. RANs need to both detect and execute
the requests of users. Because detection and execution of requests have different
requirements, I analyze them independently. I quantify how the number of active
BSs can be reduced if the detection ranges of BSs are increased by cooperative
transmissions. Next, I analyze how more BSs can be deactivated if the remaining
active BSs cooperate to transmit data to the users. However, in addition to increasing
the range, cooperative transmissions also radiate more power. This results in
higher interference for other users which slows their transmissions down and,
thus, increases energy consumption. Therefore, I describe how the radiated power
of cooperative transmissions can be reduced if instantaneous channel knowledge
is available. Because the implementation in real hardware is impractical for demonstration
purposes, I show the results of a simulation that incorporates all effects I studied
analytically earlier. In conclusion, I show that a sleep mode can reduce the energy
consumption of RANs if applied correctly. To apply a sleep mode correctly, it
is necessary to consider power-cycle durations, power profiles, and the interaction
of BSs. When this knowledge is combined the energy consumption of RANs can be
reduced with only a slight loss of performance. Because this results in a trade-off
between energy consumption and performance, each RAN operator has to decide which
trade-off is preferred.

text: In the leasing variant of Set Cover presented by Anthony et al.[1], elements
U arrive over time and must be covered by sets from a familyF of subsets of U.
Each set can be leased for K different periods of time.Let |U| = n and |F| = m.
Leasing a set S for a period k incurs a cost ckS and allows S to cover its elements
for the next lk time steps. The objectiveis to minimize the total cost of the
sets leased, such that elements arrivingat any time t are covered by sets which
contain them and are leased duringtime t. Anthony et al. [1] gave an optimal O(log
n)-approximation forthe problem in the offline setting, unless P = NP [22]. In
this paper, wegive randomized algorithms for variants of Set Cover Leasing in
the onlinesetting, including a generalization of Online Set Cover with Repetitionspresented
by Alon et al. [2], where elements appear multiple times andmust be covered by
a different set at each arrival. Our results improve theO(log2(mn)) competitive
factor of Online Set Cover with Repetitions [2]to O(log d log(dn)) = O(logmlog(mn)),
where d is the maximum numberof sets an element belongs to.

text:
The present study aimed to investigate the relationships between macronutrient
intake and serum lipid profile in adolescents from eight European cities participating
in the HELENA (Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence) cross-sectional
study (2006–7), and to assess the role of body fat-related variables in these
associations. Weight, height, waist circumference, skinfold thicknesses, total
cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C), LDL-cholesterol, TAG, apoB and apoA1 were
measured in 454 adolescents (44 % boys) aged 12·5–17·5 years. Macronutrient intake
(g/4180 kJ per d (1000 kcal per d)) was assessed using two non-consecutive 24 h
dietary recalls. Associations were evaluated by multi-level analysis and adjusted
for sex, age, maternal education, centre, sum of four skinfolds, moderate-to-vigorous
physical activity, sedentary behaviours and diet quality index for adolescents.
Carbohydrate intake was inversely associated with HDL-C (β = − 0·189, P< 0·001).
An inverse association was found between fat intake and TAG (β = − 0·319, P< 0·001).
Associations between macronutrient intake and serum lipids varied according to
adiposity levels, i.e. an inverse association between carbohydrate intake and
HDL-C was only observed in those adolescents with a higher waist:height ratio.
As serum lipids and excess body fat are the major markers of CVD, these findings
should be considered when developing strategies to prevent the risk of CVD among
adolescents.
