text: "Recently, many efforts have been made to develop more efficient Inter-Vehicle
Communication (IVC) protocols for on-demand route planning according to observed
traffic congestion or incidents, as well as for safety applications. Because practical
experiments are often not feasible, simulation of network protocol behavior in
Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET) scenarios is strongly demanded for evaluating
the applicability of developed network protocols. In this work, we discuss the
need for bidirectional coupling of network simulation and road traffic microsimulation
for evaluating IVC protocols. As the selection of a mobility model influences
the outcome of simulations to a great deal, the use of a representative model
is necessary for producing meaningful evaluation results. Based on these observations,
we developed the hybrid simulation framework Veins (Vehicles in Network Simulation),
composed of the network simulator OMNeT++ and the road traffic simulator SUMO.
In a proof-of-concept study, we demonstrate its advantages and the need for bidirectionally
coupled simulation based on the evaluation of two protocols for incident warning
over VANETs. With our developed methodology, we can advance the state-of-the-art
in performance evaluation of IVC and provide means to evaluate developed protocols
    more accurately.\r\n"

text: The paper presents the results of numerical and experimental investigation
of cylindrical piezoelectric actuator used for achieving independent three degrees
of freedom oscillations of the contact point. The design of actuator based on
a hollow piezoelectric cylinder mounted on a metal rod. The piezoceramic cylinder
has a radial polarization and special configuration of the electrodes that cover
inner and outer surface of the cylinder. The main advantage of actuator's design
is that solid metallic rod operates as a part of inner electrode of the cylinder
and a stator of actuator. The geometry of piezoelectric actuator was adopted to
reach resonance of oscillations for the first longitudinal mode and the third
flexural mode at same frequency. The actuator is designed to move positioned object
through contact point which is located on the top of the rod. The optimal topology
of electrodes was found to achieve longitudinal and flexural oscillations of the
actuator in two perpendicular planes. Three degrees of freedom of the positioning
object can be achieved and control of the system can be implemented by applying
different excitation schemes and regimes. The numerical simulation and experimental
study of piezoelectric actuator was performed. Impedance of actuator was analyzed
under different excitation regimes. The results of numerical modeling and experimental
study were compared. Recommendations for the further development of this type
    of actuator are given.

text: "Atomistic simulations on the silicon carbide precipitation in bulk silicon
employing both, classical potential and\r\nfirst-principlesmethods are presented.
The calculations aim at a comprehensive, microscopic understanding of the\r\nprecipitation
mechanism in the context of controversial discussions in the literature. For the
quantum-mechanical\r\ntreatment, basic processes assumed in the precipitation
process are calculated in feasible systems of small\r\nsize. The migration mechanism
    of a carbon \x02100\x03 interstitial and silicon \x0211 0\x03 self-interstitial
in otherwise\r\ndefect-free silicon are investigated using density functional
theory calculations. The influence of a nearby\r\nvacancy, another carbon interstitial
and a substitutional defect as well as a silicon self-interstitial has been\r\ninvestigated
systematically. Interactions of various combinations of defects have been characterized
including a\r\ncouple of selected migration pathways within these configurations.
Most of the investigated pairs of defects tend\r\nto agglomerate allowing for
a reduction in strain. The formation of structures involving strong carbon–carbon\r\nbonds
turns out to be very unlikely. In contrast, substitutional carbon occurs in all
probability. A long range\r\ncapture radius has been observed for pairs of interstitial
carbon as well as interstitial carbon and vacancies. A\r\nrather small capture
radius is predicted for substitutional carbon and silicon self-interstitials.
Initial assumptions\r\nregarding the precipitation mechanism of silicon carbide
in bulk silicon are established and conformability to\r\nexperimental findings
is discussed. Furthermore, results of the accurate first-principles calculations
on defects\r\nand carbon diffusion in silicon are compared to results of classical
potential simulations revealing significant\r\nlimitations of the latter method.
An approach to work around this problem is proposed. Finally, results of the\r\nclassical
potential molecular dynamics simulations of large systems are examined, which
reinforce previous\r\nassumptions and give further insight into basic processes
involved in the silicon carbide transition."

text: In this paper, we present a novel blocking matrix and fixed beamformer design
for a generalized sidelobe canceler for speech enhancement in a reverberant enclosure.
They are based on a new method for estimating the acoustical transfer function
ratios in the presence of stationary noise. The estimation method relies on solving
a generalized eigenvalue problem in each frequency bin. An adaptive eigenvector
tracking utilizing the power iteration method is employed and shown to achieve
a high convergence speed. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed beamformer
leads to better noise and interference reduction and reduced speech distortions
compared to other blocking matrix designs from the literature.

text: 'Modeling and simulation play a key-role in computer-assisted design of ultrasonic
sensors. The accuracy of those numerical or analytical models highly depends on
the material dataset chosen as well as on the digitized simplified geometry. Thus,
researchers worked on techniques how to measure material datasets of piezoceramics
or passive materials (i.e. polymers) for use in simulation [Rau08] [Rup09]. Most
computer models neglect the influence of adhesive bonds between those active and
passive material components used to form a complete ultrasonic transducer and
thus imply perfect interface layers. To gain a more accurate model one need to
go further and consider non-perfect interface layers between assembly parts. Because
adhesive bonds are neither necessarily isotropic nor homogeneous and their geometric
dimensions are very small, we need to define effective material datasets dependent
on the model used in simulation. In this contribution the indicator under study
is the electric impedance of the active element. We will show the influence of
different adhesives used to adhere metal electrodes on piezoceramic discs. Therefore,
we use several different types of adhesives (epoxies, cyanoacrylates and perfluorpolyether
grease) and different sizes of piezoceramic discs (PIC 255, manufacturer: PI Ceramic
GmbH) of the same batch (thickness, diameter). The electrodes have been cut from
one plate made of stainless steel using a laser to avoid uncertainty effects due
to variations in material-parameters. The probes have been prepared in an air-conditioned
Lab with constant temperature and humidity. The indicators considered to identify
the effect of those different adhesive films are extracted from the electric impedance
    of the electromechanical converter.'

text: There has been a lot of progress in finding measurable quantities of high
in- formation content for the inverse determination of piezoelectric material
properties. Since some material parameters (mainly \textgreek{e}S 11, e15and cE

it is not sufficient to look only at the electri- cal impedance of discoidal piezoceramics
[1]. Moreover, the parameter sensitivities vary with respect to the diameter--thickness
ratio of the disc and the design of an ultrasonic transducer's piezoceramic has
to match other requirements than those of a good material characterization [2,
3]. That is why it is still desirable to find model based approaches for parameter
identification that either keep the technical effort low (e.g., only an impedance
measurement) or increase speed of the inversion procedure. In this contribution
we answer the question if an additional analytical approximation of cE 44, strictly
following the ideas of Theocaris [4], in conjunction with a single measured elec-
trical impedance will be sufficient for an accurate simulation of both, electrical
impedance and surface normal velocity of a piezoceramic disc. Thereby, the remaining
parameters are identified by means of the Inverse Method. Furthermore, we use
the parameter ap- proximation as an initial guess and limiting boundary to speed
up the inverse algorithm if both, electrical impedance and surface normal velocity
are taken into account within the optimization procedure.

text: For many applications like level measurement and industry robotics it is of
advantage if the directional characteristic of an ultrasonic transducer is changeable
or adaptable for the improvement of spatial resolution. Often this goal is reached
with the use of ultrasonic transducer arrays, which elements are driven with phase
shifted excitation signals. One disadvantage of these solutions is the great effort
for building such an array and the multi-channel sensor electronics. In this contribution
the directional characteristic of a single air transducer with segmented electrodes
is analyzed. Therefore a variable script based finite element model is used to
discover the influence of different electrode configurations on the directional
characteristic of a single piezoceramic transducer. Especially the influence on
the angle of beam and the near field length are evaluated. The used variable model
permits an optimization of the configuration with regards to the mentioned criteria.
The findings will be used for the development of a level measurement system for
    bulk solids.

text: "We propose the use of the material flow simulation to evaluate the robustness
of a production plan, which was created and optimized with no respect to unforeseen
derivations. Since the necessary probabilities for machine failures and similar
operational events on the floor can easily be integrated in the simulation model,
in order to analyze, how initial plan performs in these situations. The influence
of unforeseen events in daily production cannot be modeled within mathematical
optimization without consuming large amounts of computation time. We show a possible
way to use simulation to evaluate and enhance a production plan. We illustrate
the developed process using a real-world use-case of medium complexity and can
show, that simulation is able to evaluate the robustness of a given pro-optimizes
    production plan.\r\n"
