text: UML has been widely accepted by the software community for several years.
As electronic systems design can no longer be seen as an isolated hardware design
activity, UML becomes of significant interest as a unification language for systems
description combining both HW and SW components. This article provides a comprehensive
view of the UML applied to System-on-Chip (SoC) and hardware-related embedded
systems design. The modeling concepts in the UML language are first introduced,
including major diagrams for the representation of the behavior and the structure
of systems. The principles behind application specific UML customizations (UML
profiles) are summarized, and several examples relevant for SoC design are given,
such as the SysML (System Modeling Language) and the SoC Profile. Thereafter,
various approaches associating UML with existing HW/SW design languages are presented.
Beyond language aspects, the article addresses the question of UML-based design
flows, and shows how UML can be applied concretely to the development of electronic-based
systems. The current situation about tool support constitutes the last focus of
the article. In particular, we show how UML tools can be combined with well-known
    simulation environments, such as MATLAB.

text: The mechanisms by which proteases activate the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC)
are not yet fully understood. We investigated the effect of extracellular proteases
on rat ENaC heterologously expressed in Xenopus laevis oocytes. Application of
trypsin increased ENaC whole-oocyte currents by about 8-fold without a concomitant
increase in channel surface expression. The stimulatory effect of trypsin was
preserved in oocytes expressing alphagamma-ENaC, but was abolished in oocytes
expressing alphabeta-ENaC. Thus, the gamma-subunit appears to be essential for
channel activation by extracellular proteases. Site-directed mutagenesis of a
putative prostasin cleavage site in the extracellular loop of the gamma-subunit
revealed that mutating the 181Lys residue to alanine (gammaK181A) increases ENaC
baseline whole-oocyte currents, decreases channel surface expression, and largely
reduces the stimulatory effect of extracellular proteases (trypsin, chymotrypsin
and human neutrophil elastase). In single-channel recordings from outside-out
patches we demonstrated that the gammaK181A mutation essentially abolishes the
activation of near-silent channels by trypsin, while a stimulatory effect of trypsin
on channel gating is preserved. This apparent dual effect of trypsin on channel
gating and on the recruitment of near-silent channels was confirmed by experiments
using the beta518C mutant ENaC which can be converted to a channel with an open
probability of nearly one by exposure to a sulfhydryl reagent. Interestingly,
the gammaK181A mutation results in the spontaneous appearance of a 67 kDa fragment
of the gamma-subunit in the plasma membrane which can be prevented by a furin
inhibitor and also occurs after channel activation by extracellular trypsin. This
suggests that the mutation promotes channel cleavage and activation by endogenous
proteases. This would lower the pool of near-silent channels and explain the constitutive
activation and reduced responsiveness of the mutant channel to extracellular proteases.
We conclude that the mutated site (K181A) affects a region in the gamma-subunit
of ENaC that is functionally important for the activation of near-silent channels
    by extracellular proteases.

text: Complex control oriented embedded systems with hard real-time constraints
require real-time operation system (RTOS) for predictable timing behavior. To
support the evaluation of different scheduling strategies and task priorities,
we use an abstract RTOS model based on SystemC. In this article, we present an
annotation method for time estimation that supports flexible simulation and validation
of real-time-constraints for task migration between different target processors
without loss of simulation performance and less memory overhead.

text: In this paper, we study the iterative detection problem for a coded system
with multi-ary modulation. We show that, with iterative linear minimum-mean-square-error
(LMMSE) detection, superposition coded modulation (SCM) can provide performance
superior to that with other traditional signaling schemes used in trellis coded
modulation (TCM) and bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM). This finding provides
a useful guideline for system design considering inter-symbol interference (ISI)
and other forms of interference. Simulation results are provided to illustrate
the efficiency of the iterative LMMSE detection with different signaling schemes.

text: How to teach actions to a robot as well as how a robot learns actions is an
important issue to be discussed in designing robot learning systems. Inspired
by human parent-infant interaction, we hypothesize that a robot equipped with
infant-like abilities can take advantage of parental proper teaching. Parents
are known to significantly alter their infant-directed actions versus adult-directed
ones, e.g. make more pauses between movements, which is assumed to aid the infants’
understanding of the actions. As a first step, we analyzed parental actions using
a primal attention model. The model based on visual saliency can detect likely
important locations in a scene without employing any knowledge about the actions
or the environment. Our statistical analysis revealed that the model was able
to extract meaningful structures of the actions, e.g. the initial and final state
of the actions and the significant state changes in them, which were highlighted
by parental action modifications. We further discuss the issue of designing an
infant-like robot that can induce parent-like teaching, and present a human-robot
interaction experiment evaluating our robot simulation equipped with the saliency
    model.

text: Three cis-dioxovanadium(V) complexes with similar N -salicylidenehydrazide
ligands modeling hydrogen bonding interactions of vanadate relevant for vanadium
haloperoxidases are studied by 51V solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Their parameters
describing the quadrupolar and chemical shift anisotropy interactions (quadrupolar
coupling constant C Q , asymmetry of the quadrupolar tensor η Q , isotropic chemical
shift δ iso , chemical shift anisotropy δ σ , asymmetry of the chemical shift
    tensor η σ and the Euler angles α , β and γ ) are determined both experimentally
and theoretically using DFT methods. A comparative study of different methods
to determine the NMR parameters by numerical simulation of the spectra is presented.
Detailed theoretical investigations on the DFT level using various basis sets
and structural models show that by useful choice of the methodology, the calculated
parameters agree to the experimental ones in a very good manner.

text: "For the first time, the problem of optimizing energy for communication and
motion is investigated. We consider a single mobile robot with continuous high
bandwidth wireless communication, e.g. caused by a multimedia application like
video surveillance. This robot is connected to a radio base station and moves
with constant speed from a given starting point on the plane to a target point.
The task is to find the best path such that the energy consumption for mobility
and the communication is optimized. This is motivated by the fact that the energy\r\nconsumption
of radio devices increases polynomially (at least to\r\nthe power of two) with
the transmission distance. We introduce efficient approximation algorithms finding
the optimal path given the starting point, the target point and the position of
the radio stations. We exemplify the influence of the communication cost by a
starting scenario with one radio station. We study the performance of the proposed
algorithm in simulation, compare it with the scenario without applying our approach,
    and present the results."
