  text:
In the present study the relationship between the consumption of different
beverage groups and body-weight status in 5 years of study participation in German
adolescents was investigated. We used anthropometric and dietary data from 3 d
weighed records of 244 subjects between 9 and 18 years of age participating in
the Dortmund Nutritional and Anthropometric Longitudinally Designed (DONALD) study.
Only subjects with at least four out of six possible weighed dietary records were
considered. A repeated-measures regression model (PROC MIXED) was used to analyse
the effect of beverage consumption on body-weight status. BMI standard deviation
scores (BMI-SDS) and body fat percentage (%BF) were chosen as the dependent variables.
In boys, energetic beverage consumption was not associated with BMI-SDS or %BF,
neither cross-sectionally nor prospectively. In girls, baseline consumption of
energetic beverages did not predict baseline BMI-SDS, baseline %BF, or change
in either variable over the study period. However, an increase in energetic beverage
consumption over the study period was associated with an increase in BMI-SDS (+0.070
    SDS/MJ increase in energetic beverage consumption; P = 0·01).
Separate consideration of regular soft drinks and fruit juices revealed that,
in girls, BMI-SDS increased with increased fruit juice consumption (+0·096 SDS/MJ
increase in fruit juice consumption; P = 0·01), and
to a lesser extent with regular soft drink consumption (+0·055 SDS/MJ increase
in regular soft drink consumption; P = 0·08). In conclusion,
these results suggest that an increase in energetic beverage consumption may result
in weight gain, at least in adolescent girls.

text: Designing and implementing artificial self-organizing systems is a challenging
task since they typically behave non- intuitive and only little theoretical foundations
exist. Predicting a system of many components with a huge amount of interactions
is beyond human skills. The currently common use of simulations for design support
is not satisfying, as it is time-consuming and the results are most likely sub-
optimal. In this work, we present the derivation of an analytical, time-, and
space-continuous model for a swarm of autonomous robots based on the Fokker-Planck
equation. While the motion model is in most parts physically motivated, the communication
model is based on a heuristic approach. A showcase application to a recently proposed
scenario of collective perception in a huge swarm of robots with very limited
abilities is given and the simulation results are compared to the model. Despite
the high level of abstraction, the prediction discrepancies are small and the
parameters can be mapped one-to-one from the model to the control algorithm. Finally,
we give an outlook on the capabilities of the proposed model, discuss its limitations,
and suggest an improvement that could reduce the number of empirically determined
    parameters.

text: "The validation of material flow models as well as the selection of promising
strategies for the generation of a successful experiment plan is a time-consuming
process. A new approach is presented, which supports the simulation expert in
his working process by giving him the opportunity to modify the simulated simulation
run and afterwards compare the effects of his modification with the original setting,
online and in one user interface, implemented by switching the visualizations
between the simulation runs or opening up to 5 parallel 3D windows. The method
developed therefore clones existing simulation runs online and allows the navigation
within these existing simulation runs. The method has been implemented and is
validated by a test model, which describes in detail the new working process of
a modeler. New research questions are derived from this work, which will define
    following working steps.\r\n"

text: GUI builder tools are widely used in practice to develop the user interface
of software systems. Typically they are visual programming tools that support
direct-manipulative assembling of the user interface components. We have developed
the tool GuiBuilder which follows a model-driven approach to the development of
graphical (multimedia) user interfaces. This allows a meta-design approach where
user interface developers as well as prospective users of the system are supported
in modelling the desired functionality of the GUI on a high level of abstraction
that is easy to understand for all involved stakeholders. The model consists of
compositional presentation diagrams to model the structure of the user interface
and hierarchical statechart diagrams to model its behaviour. GuiBuilder then supports
the transformation of the model to Java, i.e., the generation of a working user
interface and the simulation of the modelled behaviour. Interactive sessions with
the user interface can be recorded and replayed.

text: We consider the problem of exploring an unknown environment using a swarm
of autonomous robots with collective behavior emerging from their local rules.
Each robot has only a very restricted view on the environment which makes cooperation
difficult. We introduce a software system which is capable of simulating a large
number of such robots (e.g. 1000) on highly complex terrains with millions of
obstacles. Its main purpose is to easily integrate and evaluate any kind of algorithm
for controlling the robot behavior. The simulation may be observed in real-time
via a visualization that displays both the individual and the collective progress
of the robots. We present the system design, its main features and underlying
    concepts.

text: 'Today, mobility is one of the most important market and technology trend
within information and communication technology. As the demand for rapid deployment
of dependable mobile applications increases, middleware for mobile systems is
emerging as one of the most active areas of system research in mobility. The middleware
is a set of distributed software services that exists between distributed operating
systems and mobile applications. The key to the middleware is to provide support
across the mobile application domains, help application developers overcome the
complexity and problems brought by mobility, and enhance dependability and usability
of developed mobile applications. The criticality and pervasiveness of middleware
for mobile systems is continually growing. However, the design and development
of the middleware are difficult tasks, and it is not easy to ensure the quality
of a developed middleware. This is mainly caused by the increasing complexity
of the middleware. In addition, the great diversity of this area makes it very
difficult for the designers to reuse the already established design knowledge
or successful experience when building new systems. All these make the design
process quite inefficient and unpredictable, and therefore risking the project.
“One man’s magic is another man’s engineering”. Engineering design is much more
routine than innovative. Founding on this fundamental notion in software engineering,
we develop an architectural style-based approach to deal with the problems in
the thesis. We build architectural styles for a class of related middleware. The
style represents a common form of design, which originates from the results that
practitioners have achieved in one area. The style is formulated to repeat successes
and avoid failures from previous projects. When building a new middleware, the
designers and developers do not need to explore all possible alternatives for
its supported architecture. Instead, they can use the architectural style that
is effective for the middleware. They can define the design as instances of the
style, or they can use the style as a reference model for further improvement
and development. By structuring the design space for a family of related middleware,
the style can drastically simplify the process of building a middleware, reduce
costs of implementation through reusable infrastructure, and improve system integrity
through style-specific analysis and checks. We develop the approach based on UML-like
meta modeling and graph transformation techniques to support sound methodological
principles, powerful modeling, formal analysis and refinement. The approach consists
of several main parts: the modeling language that supports specification of the
style and mobility, the refinement formalization that ensures that an abstract
style is correctly refined to a concrete one, as well as the consistency check
framework that validates behavioral consistency between two styles on different
abstract layers. With the Fujaba simulation tool support, we also develop a style-based
engineering process that helps us to efficiently develop correct and consistent
styles. Besides, it allows a seamless integration of our approach into the well-known
object oriented design. By providing a concrete example of how to construct the
style for a class of related middleware, and how to use the style to help the
design and development of a new middleware, we show that the architectural style-based
    approach is useful and practical.'

text: 'Continuous and reliable concentration measurement of liquids still is a great
challenge as the sensor systems have to meet high industrial requirements. Apart
from chemical sensors there are a couple of acoustic systems [1] that are well
suited for a lot of industrial applications. Most of them determine the amplitude
ratio of deflected ultrasound bursts at different boundaries as well as the sound
velocity of the liquid in order to calculate its acoustic impedance and therewith
its density. The advantages of acoustic sensors are their robustness and their
fast response. Their disadvantages are sensitivity against variations of the reference
material properties as well as abrasion or soiling of the boundaries. This contribution
is about a new model-based method that uses the whole surface of an acoustic waveguide
as reference boundary: It has turned out that the principal components of a signal
at the end of the waveguide can be assigned to the different propagative acoustic
modes (Fig. 1). Therefore it is necessary to use different simulation tools, e.g.
FEM and modal analysis (Fig. 2). With this it is possible to determine the amplitudes
of each mode by means of one measured signal at the end of the waveguide and Gauss
Algorithm even if the transducer is of very simple kind [2]. Therewith it is possible
to get redundant information -- one amplitude for each mode -- for the liquid
impedance. In addition to that it is possible to generate an acoustic reference
signal without information about the liquid impedance but dissipation if we use
the fundamental mode. The different signal amplitudes and a model of acoustic
wave propagation [2, 3] offer the possibility to distinguish between dissipation
in the liquid and attenuation due to the impedance relations. Moreover, if there
are enough analysable amplitudes available, variations of the reference material
    properties can be determined.'
