text: The behavior of mixtures of 1-octanol with water with different molar ratios
confined inside the mesoporous silica SBA-15 was investigated by a combination
of solid-state NMR spectroscopy and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Two-dimensional
H-1-Si-29 FSLG-HET-COR NMR spectra revealed the orientation of 1-octanol relative
to the pore walls. These arrangements are in good agreement with the preferred
structures found by MD. In addition, MD simulations also shed light on molecular
orientations and interactions in the pore center region, which are not resolvable
by solid-state NMR.

text: Using the methods of differential mass-spectrometric thermal analysis (DMSTA),
thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), microscale combustion calorimetry (MCC), and
fast pyrolysis (FP), thermal decomposition of high-molecular-weight polymethylmetacrylate
(PMMA) has been investigated in the temperature range of 315 + 500 degrees C.
Based on these data, the kinetic parameters (the activation energy, the pre-exponential
factor) were obtained of a one-step pyrolysis reaction in supposition of a first-order
reaction using simple mathematical fitting and an iso-conversion method. Validity
of the obtained kinetic parameters was verified by comparing the experimental
data on dependence of the decomposition rate on temperature in the broad range
of the heating rates with the results of simulating the above dependence, using
these kinetic parameters. These parameters, obtained in the broad temperature
range, may be further used in numerical simulation of PMMA combustion under fire
conditions and for assessing the polymer's flammability.

text: A complete system analysis for an integrated passive RFID transponder designed
at 5.8 GHz range is presented, and a comprehensive set of design concerns for
the rectifier circuit as the core of the harvesting block is also discussed. The
system analysis is complemented by transistor-level design and simulation of harvesting
circuits in a commercial 65 nm CMOS technology. A differential drive rectifier
(DDR) has been selected as the most efficient harvesting topology for microwave
frequency applications, which works at very low input power levels. The circuit
was designed and simulated including chip layout parasitics and antenna matching
circuitry. Considering the power budget of the tag chip, a power conversion efficiency
of roughly 68.4% is achieved in simulation for an input RF power of around -11.26dBm.

text:
In this paper, a questionnaire-based survey on the use of online videos
by undergraduate engineering students for study-related purposes is presented.
Over the last few years, a large number of instructional videos has been uploaded
to websites such as YouTube. Due to the widespread distribution of high-speed
internet connections and (mobile) devices, such as smartphones or laptops, which
are nowadays routinely used by students, online videos are also frequently used
in higher education. While much research on this subject focuses on Massive Open
Online Courses (MOOCs) or flipped classroom approaches, this survey examines use
of videos for self-study, complementary to traditional face-to-face courses. Furthermore,
we analyze the acceptance of a characteristic video production style, which uses
specific 3D animations to clarify complex connections between technical and mathematical
aspects. The results indicate extensive use of short videos which address subjects
that are particularly difficult for the students. This survey can help educators
to develop an impression of current video use by undergraduate engineering students.
In this paper, a questionnaire-based survey on the use of online videos by undergraduate

While much research on this subject focuses on Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)
or flipped classroom approaches, this survey examines usage behavior concerning
the apparently much more common use of videos for self-study, complementary to
traditional face-to-face courses. Furthermore, we analyze the acceptance of a

complex connections between technical and mathematical aspects. The results indicate
that short videos addressing subjects that are particularly difficult for the
students are extensively used. Additionally, this survey can help educators to
develop a realistic understanding of current video use by undergraduate engineering

text: In this poster, we present the first experimental results of our OFDM-based
Vehicular VLC (V-VLC) prototype. Our Bit Error Rate (BER) measurements show that
for lower Modulation and Coding Schemes (MCS), the performance of our hardware-setup
roughly behaves the same as it does in simulation for AWGN channel. However, for
higher order MCS with high PAPR, the BER performance gets degraded due to non-linear
behavior of LEDs, and deviates further from AWGN performance as the MCS order
is increased. The obtained results suggest that unlike RF-Communications, where
the focus is usually towards linearity of the amplifiers, for V-VLC, linearity
within the whole system is required to achieve optimal performance.

text: "Capillary forces are very important considering the handling of powders as
they, in general, exceed other adhesion forces. These capillary forces are dependent
on several different parameters. Especially the distance between the particles
is an important parameter. For example, in moving bulk solids a large variety
of distances between particles will occur. Therefore, the distance-dependence
of capillary bridges was investigated with a numerical simulation method, assuming
thermodynamic equilibrium which is attained very fast for small particles. This
method uses the Kelvin equation and the Young-Laplace equation to calculate numerically
the shape of the capillary bridge without any assumption regarding the shape.
The force is eventually derived from the meniscus shape.\r\n\r\nThe distance becomes
extremely important when the capillary liquid bridge between two surfaces is only
determined by capillary condensation depending on relative humidity. Only a slight
increase of the distance within the fraction of a nanometer changes the behaviour
of the capillary force significantly. Furthermore, the influence of the force
on the separation of particles will be presented. The force decreases almost linearly
with increasing distance for a wide range of distances and consequently, a contact
stiffness for capillary bridges could be derived. These results may e.g. be used
in DEM models. Also, the maximum separation distance of capillary bridges in thermodynamic
equilibrium and the correlation with the according bridge volume was investigated.
As two limiting cases for capillary bridges at varying distances one can assume
either a constant curvature, i.e. infinitely fast attainment of equilibrium, or
a constant volume, i.e. infinitely slow attainment of equilibrium. Therefore,
a comparison of these two possibilities will be presented and discussed as well."

text: "
The article examines the division of labor for everyday food routines
of two-parent households depending on their labor force participation. Using data
from the representative German Time Use Survey 2001/02 and 2012/13, three different
pairs were formed: dual-earner couples, couples with additional female income
and male-breadwinner couples Findings show that mother’s employment influences
the time used for everyday food routines: It was found that the higher the employment
rate of mothers, the less time was spent on food routine activities. Furthermore,
the daily time used for everyday food routines was reduced from 2001/02 to 2012/13.
The largest reductions were seen in the group of mothers working fulltime. Besides
that, fathers were more engaged in meal preparation on the weekends, although
the responsibility was the mother’s. In addition, the age and number of children
in a household influenced the time used for everyday food routines. However, none
of the examined pair constellations can help determine an egalitarian division
of everyday food routines. There is still a labor division by gender.\r\nZusammenfassung
"

text: We numerically simulate the circular polarization ratio of the radar signal
backscattered from a large-grain cometary coma and compare the simulation results
with the radar measurements for seven comets. We apply the discrete dipole approximation
method and a model of random irregular particles. Our results confirm water ice
composition of the cm-sized chunks detected by the NASA Deep Impact space probe
in the vicinity of the nucleus of Comet 103P/Hartley 2. The index of the power-law
size distribution in this case can be constrained to the range n ≈ 3.3–4.3. For
the other considered comets the circular polarization ratio can be reproduced
with variations of the power index between 2 and 5.
