  abstract     = {{The number and scale of humanitarian operations has significantly increased during the past decades due to the rising number of humanitarian emergencies and natural disasters worldwide. Therefore, the development of appropriate planning methods for optimization of the respective supply chains is constantly growing in importance. A specific problem in the context of humanitarian operations is the supply of relief items to the affected areas after the occurrende of a sudden change in demand or supply, for example, due to an epidemic or to unexpected shortages, durng an ongoing humanitarian action. When such overlapping disasters occur, goods must be relocated to existing depots in a way which enables rapid suppply to regions with new and urgent demand. At the same time, ongoing operations have to continue, i. e., the other regions should not suffer from shortages, and possible future emergencies must be taken into account. This is a planning situation under uncertainty as it is not known in advance if and where a disruption - and hence additional demand - will occur. In this paper, an optimization model for such situations is developed based n penalty costs for non-satishied demand. A rolling horizon approach for solving the model is presented, and it is shown that taking into account the possibility of future disruptions can helb to balance inventories and to reduce total non-served demand.}},

  abstract     = {{We propose the use of the material flow simulation to evaluate the robustness of a production plan, which was created and optimized with no respect to unforeseen derivations. Since the necessary probabilities for machine failures and similar operational events on the floor can easily be integrated in the simulation model, in order to analyze, how initial plan performs in these situations. The influence of unforeseen events in daily production cannot be modeled within mathematical optimization without consuming large amounts of computation time. We show a possible way to use simulation to evaluate and enhance a production plan. We illustrate the developed process using a real-world use-case of medium complexity and can show, that simulation is able to evaluate the robustness of a given pro-optimizes production plan.

Where in a first attempt, one could rely on high-level features designed by experts, we approach the problem from a different angle here, namely by using relatively cheap low-level computer generated features.   abstract     = {{The use of multi-objective evolutionary algorithms for solving black-box problems with multiple conflicting objectives has become an important research area. However, when no gradient information is available, the examination of formal convergence or optimality criteria is often impossible. Thus, sophisticated heuristic online stopping criteria (OSC) have recently become subject of intensive research. In order to establish formal guidelines for a systematic research, we present a taxonomy of OSC in this paper. We integrate the known approaches within the taxonomy and discuss them by extracting their building blocks. The formal structure of the taxonomy is used as a basis for the implementation of a comprehensive MATLAB toolbox. Both contributions, the formal taxonomy and the MATLAB implementation, provide a framework for the analysis and evaluation of existing and new OSC approaches.}},

  abstract     = {{ Evolutionary (multi-objective optimization) algorithms (EMOAs) are widely accepted to be competitive optimization methods in industry today. However, normally only standard techniques are employed by the engineering experts. Here, it is shown how these standard techniques can be completed and improved with respect to interactivity to other tools, runtime, and parameterization. The coupling with metamodels serves as an example for the interactivity to other tools, while the online convergence detection relates to runtime, i.e. stopping criteria. Finally, sequential parameter optimization improves results focussing on parameter tuning. We show that invoking all these methods on their own already enhances EMOAs for aerodynamic applications. It is concluded with an outlook on how these methods might come together to foster aerospace applications and, at a time, widen the application area to multi-disciplinary optimization tasks. }},

  abstract     = {{This work addresses the problem of deciding whether a set of realizations of a vector-valued time series with unknown temporal correlation are spatially correlated or not. Specifically, the spatial correlation is induced by a colored source over a frequency-flat single-input multiple-output (SIMO) channel distorted by independent and identically distributed noises with temporal correlation. The generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) for this detection problem does not have a closed-form expression and we have to resort to numerical optimization techniques. In particular, we apply the successive convex approximations approach which relies on solving a series of convex problems that approximate the original (non-convex) one. The proposed solution resembles a power method for obtaining the dominant eigenvector of a matrix, which changes over iterations. Finally, the performance of the proposed detector is illustrated by means of computer simulations showing a great improvement over previously proposed detectors that do not fully exploit the temporal structure of the source.}},

  abstract     = {{In this paper we study the multiple-input multiple-output two-way relay channel (MIMO-TWRC) when the nodes use analog beamforming. Following the amplify-and-forward (AF) strategy, the problem consists of finding the transmit and receive beamformers of the nodes and the relay, and the power allocated to each one, that achieve the boundary of the capacity region. We express the optimal node beamformers in terms of the relay beamformers, and show that the capacity region can be efficiently characterized using convex optimization techniques. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the results of this paper, and to compare the capacity region achieved by analog beamforming against the conventional MIMO schemes that operate at the baseband.}},

We show that linear minimum mean-squared error (LMMSE) equalization based on the conjugate gradient (CG) method can result in significantly reduced complexity compared with conventional approaches. This reduction is achieved by incorporating a condition number constraint into the precoder optimization framework, which leads to clustered eigen values of the measurement covariance matrix. The cost is a small increase in MSE compared to the optimal precoder.}},

  abstract     = {{There has been a lot of progress in finding measurable quantities of high in- formation content for the inverse determination of piezoelectric material properties. Since some material parameters (mainly \textgreek{e}S 11, e15and cE 44) do not or only marginally influence the electrical impedance over frequency, it is not sufficient to look only at the electri- cal impedance of discoidal piezoceramics [1]. Moreover, the parameter sensitivities vary with respect to the diameter-thickness ratio of the disc and the design of an ultrasonic transducer's piezoceramic has to match other requirements than those of a good material characterization [2, 3]. That is why it is still desirable to find model based approaches for parameter identification that either keep the technical effort low (e.g., only an impedance measurement) or increase speed of the inversion procedure. In this contribution we answer the question if an additional analytical approximation of cE 44, strictly following the ideas of Theocaris [4], in conjunction with a single measured elec- trical impedance will be sufficient for an accurate simulation of both, electrical impedance and surface normal velocity of a piezoceramic disc. Thereby, the remaining parameters are identified by means of the Inverse Method. Furthermore, we use the parameter ap- proximation as an initial guess and limiting boundary to speed up the inverse algorithm if both, electrical impedance and surface normal velocity are taken into account within the optimization procedure.}},

This paper introduces the technique of algorithmic differentiation, a method to compute derivatives of arbitrary order within working precision.
