Coupling the chemistries of flame, solvent, and gas-phase species initially formed from the particle precursor in combination with the complex flow geometry of the spray flame means a special challenge for the modeling of the reaction processes. A new burner has been developed that is capable to observe the reaction of precursor solutions frequently used in spray-flame synthesis. The burner provides an almost flat, laminar, and steady flame with homogeneous addition of a fine aerosol and thus enables detailed investigation and modeling of the coupled reactions inde-pendent of spray formation and turbulent mixing. With its two separate supply channel matrices, the burner also enables the use of reactants that would otherwise react with each other already before reaching the flame. These features enable the investigation of a wide range of flame-based synthesis methods for nanoparticles and, due to the flat-flame geometry, kinetics models for these processes can be developed and validated. This work describes the matrix burner development and its gas flow optimization by simulation. Droplet-size dis-tributions generated by ultrasonic nebulization and their interaction with the burner structure are investigated by phase-Doppler anemometry. As an example for nanoparticle-for ming flames from solutions, iron-oxide nanoparticle-generating flames using iron(III) nitrate nonahydrate dissolved in 1-butanol were investigated. This effort includes measurements of two-dimensional maps of the flame temperature by a thermocouple and height-dependent concentration profiles of the main species by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Exper-imental data are compared with 1D simulations using a reduced reaction mechanism. The results show that the new burner is well suited for the development of reaction models for precursors supplied in the liquid phase usually applied in spray-flame synthesis configurations.& COPY; 2022 The Combustion Institute. For the traveling salesperson problem (TSP) a plethora of features have been suggested. Most of these features are, if at all, only normalized imprecisely raising the issue of feature values being strongly affected by the instance size. Such artifacts may have detrimental effects on algorithm selection models. We propose a normalization for two feature groups which stood out in multiple AS studies on the TSP: (a) features based on a minimum spanning tree (MST) and (b) nearest neighbor relationships of the input instance. To this end we theoretically derive minimum and maximum values for properties of MSTs and k-nearest neighbor graphs (NNG) of Euclidean graphs. We analyze the differences in feature space between normalized versions of these features and their unnormalized counterparts. Our empirical investigations on various TSP benchmark sets point out that the feature scaling succeeds in eliminating the effect of the instance size. A proof-of-concept AS-study shows promising results: models trained with normalized features tend to outperform those trained with the respective vanilla features."}],"publication":"Theoretical Computer Science","citation":{"mla":"Heins, Jonathan, et al. “A Study on the Effects of Normalized TSP Features for Automated Algorithm Selection.” <i>Theoretical Computer Science</i>, vol. 940, 2023, pp. 123–45, doi:<a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tcs.2022.10.019\">https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tcs.2022.10.019</a>.","bibtex":"@article{Heins_Bossek_Pohl_Seiler_Trautmann_Kerschke_2023, title={A study on the effects of normalized TSP features for automated algorithm selection}, volume={940}, DOI={<a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tcs.2022.10.019\">https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tcs.2022.10.019</a>}, journal={Theoretical Computer Science}, author={Heins, Jonathan and Bossek, Jakob and Pohl, Janina and Seiler, Moritz and Trautmann, Heike and Kerschke, Pascal}, year={2023}, pages={123–145} }","ama":"Heins J, Bossek J, Pohl J, Seiler M, Trautmann H, Kerschke P. However, the optimal choice of parameters strongly depends on the instance at hand and should thus be calculated on a per-instance basis. We explore the potential of Per-Instance Algorithm Configuration (PIAC) by using Reinforcement Learning (RL). To this end, we propose a novel PIAC approach that is based on deep neural networks. We apply it to predict configurations for the Lin\\textendash Kernighan heuristic (LKH) for the Traveling Salesperson Problem (TSP) individually for every single instance. To train our PIAC approach, we create a large set of 100000 TSP instances with 2000 nodes each \\textemdash currently the largest benchmark set to the best of our knowledge. We compare our approach to the state-of-the-art AAC method Sequential Model-based Algorithm Configuration (SMAC). The results show that our PIAC approach outperforms this baseline on both the newly created instance set and established instance sets."}],"date_created":"2023-11-14T15:59:01Z","type":"conference","department":[{"_id":"819"}],"status":"public","year":"2023","title":"Using Reinforcement Learning for Per-Instance Algorithm Configuration on the TSP","author":[{"id":"105520","first_name":"Moritz","last_name":"Seiler","full_name":"Seiler, Moritz"},{"full_name":"Rook, Jeroen","last_name":"Rook","first_name":"Jeroen"},{"full_name":"Heins, Jonathan","last_name":"Heins","first_name":"Jonathan"},{"full_name":"Preuß, Oliver Ludger","orcid":"0009-0008-9308-2418","first_name":"Oliver Ludger","last_name":"Preuß","id":"102978"},{"orcid":"0000-0002-4121-4668","last_name":"Bossek","first_name":"Jakob","full_name":"Bossek, Jakob","id":"102979"},{"id":"100740","orcid":"0000-0002-9788-8282","last_name":"Trautmann","first_name":"Heike","full_name":"Trautmann, Heike"}],"publication_status":"accepted","date_updated":"2024-06-10T11:56:58Z","page":"361 - 368","_id":"48898","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"user_id":"15504","doi":"10.1109/SSCI52147.2023.10372008"},{"publication":"Zeitschrift für Geschichtsdidaktik (22)","citation":{"bibtex":"@article{Meyer-Hamme_Chmiel_2023, title={Historisches Lernen – ein Beitrag zum geschichtskulturellen Wandel? All tweets with the keyword “Flüchtlinge” posted for a monthlong period following September 13, 2015, the day Germany decided to implement border controls, were collected (N = 763,752). The top 2,495 tweets according to number of retweets were selected for analysis. Differences between news media, public and private actor tweets in topics, tweet characteristics such as tone and opinion expression, links, and specific sentiments toward refugees were analyzed. We found strong differences between the tweets. Public actor tweets were the main source of positive sentiment toward refugees and the main information source on refugee support. News media tweets mostly reflected traditional journalistic norms of impartiality and objectivity, whereas private actor tweets were more diverse in sentiments toward refugees. This study analysed (i) chronotype/SJL association with visceral fat/skeletal muscle mass, (ii) the attribution to physical activity behaviour, and (iii) chronotype-specific changes in physical activity behaviour in young adults during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown. Chronotype and SJL were derived from the Munich-Chrono-Type-Questionnaire in 320 German students (age 18–25 years) from September 2019 to January 2020, 156 of these participated in an online follow-up survey in June 2020. Body composition was assessed by bioimpedance analysis at baseline. Multivariable linear regression analyses were used to relate chronotype/SJL to body composition; the contribution of self-reported physical activity was tested by mediation analysis. At baseline, a later chronotype and a larger SJL were associated with a higher visceral fat mass (P&lt;0.05), this relation was notably mediated by the attention to physical activity (P&lt;0.05). Chronotype (P = 0.02) but not SJL (P = 0.87) was inversely associated with skeletal muscle mass. During the pandemic lockdown, chronotype hardly changed, but SJL was reduced. Timing and physical activity behaviour remained in most participants and changes were unrelated to chronotype (all P&gt;0.07). A later chronotype/higher SJL may increase the risk of a higher visceral fat mass even in this relatively healthy sample, which may be partly due to their physical activity behaviour. Despite a reduction in SJL during the pandemic lockdown, later chronotypes did not change their physical activity behaviour more than earlier chronotypes.
","lang":"eng"}],"issue":"1","publication":"PLOS ONE","department":[{"_id":"35"},{"_id":"22"}],"type":"journal_article","keyword":["Multidisciplinary"],"date_created":"2023-01-13T07:15:13Z","intvolume":" 18","publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2023-01-24T11:54:46Z","author":[{"full_name":"Krueger, Betina","last_name":"Krueger","orcid":"0000-0001-5351-1785","first_name":"Betina","id":"49428"},{"first_name":"Bianca","last_name":"Stutz","full_name":"Stutz, Bianca","id":"77099"},{"first_name":"Nicole","last_name":"Jankovic","full_name":"Jankovic, Nicole"},{"full_name":"Alexy, Ute","first_name":"Ute","last_name":"Alexy"},{"full_name":"Kilanowski, Anna","first_name":"Anna","last_name":"Kilanowski"},{"orcid":"0000-0003-1603-3133","first_name":"Lars","last_name":"Libuda","full_name":"Libuda, Lars","id":"88682"},{"id":"65985","full_name":"Buyken, Anette E.","first_name":"Anette E.","last_name":"Buyken"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["1932-6203"]},"year":"2023","title":"The association of chronotype and social jet lag with body composition in German students: The role of physical activity behaviour and the impact of the pandemic lockdown","doi":"10.1371/journal.pone.0279620","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"article_number":"e0279620","citation":{"ieee":"B. The list consists of 356 foods selected for analysis in order to ensure ≥90% coverage of the diet. Recently, new food consumption data for children (0.5–&lt;6 and 6–&lt;12 years) in Germany became available, which raised the opportunity to evaluate the applicability of the MEAL food list 2016 on new data.
\r\n
\r\n
Objective
\r\n
We tested the hypotheses that the MEAL food list 2016 also covers ≥90% of the diet of the new collected food consumption data, and that the selection of foods from younger children and adults was sufficient to also cover the middle age group (6–&lt;12 years). Strategies for updating the existing food list were assessed.
\r\n
\r\n
Methods
\r\n
Three approaches evaluated the reusability and potential adjustment strategies of the existing food list. Approach 1 applied the existing food list to new food consumption data. Approach 2 allowed the extension of the existing food list to improve coverage of food consumption. Approach 3 set up a new food list based on the new data.
\r\n
\r\n
Results
\r\n
The MEAL food list 2016 covered 94% of the overall diet of the new collected food consumption data. The diet of the middle age group was sufficiently covered with 91%. However, coverage on main food group or population subgroup level was &lt;90% in some cases. Approach 3 most accurately identified relevant modifications to the existing food list. 94% of the MEAL food list 2016 could be re-used and 51 new foods were identified as potentially relevant.
\r\n
\r\n
Significance
\r\n
The results suggest that a high investment in the coverage of a TDS food list will lower the effort and the resources to keep data updated in the long-term.
\r\n
\r\n
Impact
\r\n
There is no established approach to update a TDS food list. This study provides comparative approaches to handle newly collected food consumption data for follow-on TDS activities. The results provide useful information for institutions planning or updating a TDS. Furthermore, new food consumption data for children in Germany recently became available and are here presented for the first time.
\r\n
"}],"publisher":"Springer Science and Business Media LLC","_id":"41456","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"user_id":"88682","doi":"10.1038/s41370-023-00522-4","author":[{"full_name":"Kolbaum, Anna Elena","first_name":"Anna Elena","last_name":"Kolbaum"},{"full_name":"Ptok, Sebastian","last_name":"Ptok","first_name":"Sebastian"},{"first_name":"Christian","last_name":"Jung","full_name":"Jung, Christian"},{"orcid":"0000-0003-1603-3133","first_name":"Lars","last_name":"Libuda","full_name":"Libuda, Lars","id":"88682"},{"first_name":"Oliver","last_name":"Lindtner","full_name":"Lindtner, Oliver"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["1559-0631","1559-064X"]},"title":"Reusability of Germany´s total diet study food list upon availability of new food consumption data—comparison of three update strategies","year":"2023","status":"public","publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2023-02-02T08:33:33Z"},{"date_created":"2021-11-15T09:24:59Z","department":[{"_id":"101"},{"_id":"655"}],"type":"journal_article","publication":"Journal of Global Optimization","issue":"3","abstract":[{"text":"Regularization is used in many different areas of optimization when solutions\r\nare sought which not only minimize a given function, but also possess a certain\r\ndegree of regularity. Popular applications are image denoising, sparse\r\nregression and machine learning. Since the choice of the regularization\r\nparameter is crucial but often difficult, path-following methods are used to\r\napproximate the entire regularization path, i.e., the set of all possible\r\nsolutions for all regularization parameters. Due to their nature, the\r\ndevelopment of these methods requires structural results about the\r\nregularization path. The goal of this article is to derive these results for\r\nthe case of a smooth objective function which is penalized by a piecewise\r\ndifferentiable regularization term. We do this by treating regularization as a\r\nmultiobjective optimization problem. Our results suggest that even in this\r\ngeneral case, the regularization path is piecewise smooth. Moreover, our theory\r\nallows for a classification of the nonsmooth features that occur in between\r\nsmooth parts. This is demonstrated in two applications, namely support-vector\r\nmachines and exact penalty methods.","lang":"eng"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"main_file_link":[{"url":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s10898-022-01223-2.pdf","open_access":"1"}],"doi":"10.1007/s10898-022-01223-2","author":[{"id":"32643","full_name":"Gebken, Bennet","first_name":"Bennet","last_name":"Gebken"},{"full_name":"Bieker, Katharina","last_name":"Bieker","first_name":"Katharina","id":"32829"},{"id":"47427","full_name":"Peitz, Sebastian","last_name":"Peitz","orcid":"0000-0002-3389-793X","first_name":"Sebastian"}],"title":"On the structure of regularization paths for piecewise differentiable regularization terms","year":"2023","intvolume":" 85","date_updated":"2023-03-11T17:16:33Z","oa":"1","citation":{"ieee":"B.
