Interestingly, the mcMST problem has not been in focus of evolutionary computation research for a long period of time, although, its relevance for real world problems is easy to see. The available and most notable approaches by Zhou and Gen as well as by Knowles and Corne concentrate on solution encoding and on fairly dated selection mechanisms. In this work, we revisit the mcMST and focus on the mutation operators as exploratory components of evolutionary algorithms neglected so far. We investigate optimal solution characteristics to discuss current mutation strategies, identify shortcomings of these operators, and propose a sub-tree based operator which offers what we term Pareto-beneficial behavior: ensuring convergence and diversity at the same time. It is found that the band-edge energies calculated on the G0W0 (Zn chalcogenides) or GW (ZnO) level of theory agree well with experiment, while fully self-consistent QSGW calculations are required for the correct description of the Zn 3d bands. The quasiparticle band structures are used to calculate the linear response and second-harmonic-generation (SHG) spectra of the Zn–VI compounds. Excitonic effects in the optical absorption are accounted for within the Bethe–Salpeter approach. First a theoretical link budget analysis for a reader to tag architecture is shown for a wireless industrial application at 1m distance. This includes a power budget of the passively powered transponder. The received power level of the backscattered data for the theoretical link budget is -52:5 dBm. For the first setup slot antennas are developed and measured in the anechoic chamber. The measured gain is 4.0 dB. The power of the backscatter data in setup 1 is -74:8 dBm. This corresponds to the theoretical link budget since, all losses such as cable or lower antenna gain are taken into account. Setup 2 is upgraded on the reader side with horn antennas. At 5.8 GHz, the gain reaches the value of 10.8 dB. The second setup shows improvement in the receiving backscattered power to a value of -62:4 dBm. Furthermore, as a solution to detect those transponders not presented in the main slope of the antenna, a steerable beam is introduced by means of a Rotman lens. On the topic of the passive transponder, different harvesting topologies at 5.8 GHz are investigated, and the efficiency simulation of the harvesting circuitry has been performed. The approach focuses on the quantitative description of electromagnetic fields and the mathematical methods and competencies required for this purpose, exemplarily with regard to an undergraduate electrical engineering course during the initial phase of corresponding degree programs. An essential part of this course is the spatial and time-dependent description of electromagnetic fields. For this purpose, students have to work with multiple integrals in 3D space and in different coordinate systems. Such subjects are typically covered only later in mathematics courses and without a technical context, therefore leading to major difficulties for many students. The videos presented in this work are intended to support students and lecturers to work with these subjects in an instructive fashion. The 3D animations allow for effectively clarifying complex connections between technical and mathematical aspects. The videos and their specific design are discussed with regard to didactic and technical considerations. In this work, we studied the electronic properties of silver selenide (Ag2Se). We performed direct current electrical resistivity measurements, in situ Raman spectroscopy, and synchrotron x-ray diffraction accompanied by ab initio calculations to explore pressure-induced changes to the atomic and electronic structure of Ag2Se. The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity was measured up to 30 GPa in the 4–300 K temperature interval. Resistivity data showed an unusual increase in the thermal energy gap of phase I, which is a semiconductor under ambient conditions. Recently, a similar effect was reported for the 3D topological insulator Bi2Se3. Raman spectroscopy studies revealed lattice instability in phase I indicated by the softening of observed vibrational modes with pressure. Our hybrid functional band structure calculations predicted that phase I of Ag2Se would be a narrow band gap semiconductor, in accordance with experimental results. At a pressure of ~7.5 GPa, Ag2Se underwent a structural transition to phase II with an orthorhombic Pnma structure. The temperature dependence of the resistivity of Ag2Se phase II demonstrated its metallic character. Ag2Se phase III, which is stable above 16.5 GPa, is also metallic according to the resistivity data.
