text: "Occlusion culling is a common approach to accelerate real-time rendering
of polygonal 3D-scenes by reducing the rendering load. Especially for large scenes,
it is necessary to remove occluded objects to achieve a frame rate that provides
an interactive environment. In order to benefit from the culling properly, often
hierarchical data structures are used. These data structures typically create
a spatial subdivision of a given scene into axis-aligned bounding boxes. These
boxes can be tested quickly, but they are not very precise. By using these boxes,
the included objects are detected as visible, even if other objects occlude them
(false-positives). To get perfect results, the models\x92 original geometry included
in the box has to be tested, but this would require too much computational power.
To overcome this problem, original objects\x92 approximations could be used, but
typical methods for mesh simplification cannot be applied, because they do not
create an outer hull for a given object. We present a model simplification algorithm,
which generates simple outer hulls, consisting of only few more triangles than
a box, while preserving an object\x92s shape better than a corresponding bounding
box. This approach is then extended to a hierarchical data structure, the so-called
hull tree, that can be generated for a given scene to improve the visibility tests.
Next, we present an approximative rendering algorithm, which combines the features
of the hull tree with the use of inner hulls for efficient occlusion detection
and global state-sorting of the visible objects.\r\n"

text: "This paper deals with the design of efficiently computable incentive-compatible
mechanisms for combinatorial optimization problems with single-minded agents each
possibly having multiple private parameters. We focus on approximation algorithms
for NP-hard mechanism design problems. These algorithms need to satisfy certain
monotonicity properties to ensure truthfulness. Since most of the known approximation
techniques do not fulfill these properties, we study alternative techniques. Our
first contribution is a quite general method to transform a pseudopolynomial algorithm
into a monotone fully polynomial time approximation scheme (FPTAS). This can be
applied to various problems like, e.g., knapsack, constrained shortest path, or
job scheduling with deadlines. For example, the monotone FPTAS for the knapsack
problem gives a very efficient, truthful mechanism for single-minded multiunit
auctions. The best previous result for such auctions was a 2-appro-xi-ma-tion.
In addition, we present a monotone PTAS for the generalized assignment problem
with any constant number of private parameters per agent. The most efficient way
to solve packing integer programs (PIPs) is linear programming–based randomized
rounding, which also is in general not monotone. We show that primal-dual greedy
algorithms achieve almost the same approximation ratios for PIPs as randomized
rounding. The advantage is that these algorithms are inherently monotone. This
way, we can significantly improve the approximation ratios of truthful mechanisms
for various fundamental mechanism design problems like single-minded combinatorial
auctions (CAs), unsplittable flow routing, and multicast routing. Our primal-dual
approximation algorithms can also be used for the winner determination in CAs
with general bidders specifying their bids through an oracle.\r\n"

text: 'We present a parallel rendering system for PC-Clusters to visualize large
3D scenes. One single visualization node, equipped with a high-end graphics adapter,
is supported by a group of backend nodes with weak graphics performance. The objects
of the scene are distributed among these backend nodes, they serve two purposes:
First, they provide an out-of-core memory system for the visualization node. Second,
they assist the visualization node''s rendering by performing visibility calculations
and only sending visible objects to the visualization node. In order to obtain
fast rendering with our system, we have to distribute the objects among the backend
nodes in a way that does not only guarantee an even distribution of the objects,
but also an even distribution of the visibility calculations and the amount of
data send to the visualization node. We identify necessary properties of the distribution
and argue that a random distribution is a good candidate. Further, in order to
reduce the number of objects sent to the visualization node per frame, we employ
an approximate hierarchical occlusion culling in each backend node. For this,
they are equipped, in addition to the objects assigned to them, with simplified
versions of the other objects of the 3D scene. The visualization node is equipped
with 512 MiB video memory and supported by 15 backend nodes. This system is able
to render a approx. 350 million polygons (approx. 8.5 GiB) large aircraft model
    between 20 - 30 fps and thus allows a walkthrough in real-time.'

text: 'Acceptance testing is a time-consuming task for complex software systems
that have to fulfill a large number of requirements. To reduce this effort, we
have developed a widely automated method for deriving test plans from requirements
that are expressed in natural language. It consists of three stages: annotation,
clustering, and test plan specification. The general idea is to exploit redundancies
and implicit relationships in requirements specifications. Multi-viewpoint techniques
based on RM-ODP (Reference Model for Open Distributed Processing) are employed
for specifying the requirements. We then use linguistic analysis techniques, requirements
clustering algorithms, and pattern-based requirements collection to reduce the
total effort of testing against the requirements specification. In particular,
we use linguistic analysis for extracting and annotating the actor, process and
object of a requirements statement. During clustering, a similarity function is
computed as a measure for the overlap of requirements. In the test plan specification
stage, our approach provides capabilities for semi-automatically deriving test
plans and acceptance criteria from the clustered informal textual requirements.
Two patterns are applied to compute a suitable order of test activities. The generated
test plans consist of a sequence of test steps and asserts that are executed or
checked in the given order. We also present the supporting prototype tool TORC,
which is available open source. For the evaluation of the approach, we have conducted
a case study in the field of acceptance testing of a national electronic identification
system. In summary, we report on lessons learned how linguistic analysis and clustering
techniques can help testers in understanding the relations between requirements
    and for improving test planning.'

text: The multi-objective optimal design of a piezoelectric sandwich ultrasonic
transducer is studied. The maximum vibration amplitude and the minimum electrical
input power are considered as optimization objectives. Design variables involve
continuous variables (dimensions of the transducer) and discrete variables (material
types). Based on analytical models, the optimal design is formulated as a constrained
multi-objective optimization problem. The optimization problem is then solved
by using the elitist non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) and Pareto-optimal
designs are obtained. The optimized results are analyzed and the preferred design
is proposed. The optimization procedure presented in this contribution can be
applied in multi-objective optimization problems of other piezoelectric transducers.

\r\n\r\nIn this contribution a concept is illustrated, which combines
the multi-objective optimization technique with an online assessment of the current
system state. This allows deriving measures to increase the reliability of the
system. The concept is applied to an X-by-wire vehicle with single-wheel actuators.
The emphasis is here mostly on the influence of the objectives of the multiobjective
optimization for the benefit of the reliability of the system. It is demonstrated
in simulations, that the lateral and longitudinal forces at the wheels can be
distributed advantageously by the selection of the suitable objective functions
    and the appropriate weights."

text: 'A profound description of friction in wheel--rail contact plays an essential
role for optimization of traction control strategies, as input quantity for railway
simulations in general and for the estimation of wear and rolling contact fatigue.
A multitude of wheel--rail contact models exists, however, traction--creepage
curves obtained from measurements show quantitative and qualitative deviations.
There are several phenomena which influence the traction--creepage characteristics:
Mechanisms resulting from surface roughness, frictional heating or the presence
of interfacial fluids can have a dominating influence on friction. In this paper,
a new wheel--rail contact model, accounting for these influential parameters,
will be presented. The presented model accounts for the interaction of an interfacial
fluid model for combined boundary and mixed lubrication of rough surfaces with
a wheel--rail contact model that additionally accounts for frictional heating.
A quantitative comparison with measurements found in the literature is not conducted,
since the exact conditions of the measurements are mostly unknown and parameters
can easily be adjusted to fit the measurements. Emphasis is placed on the qualitative
behavior of the model with respect to the measurements and good agreement is found.
The dependence of the maximum traction coefficient on rolling velocity, surface
roughness and normal load is studied under dry and water lubricated conditions.'

text: There has been a lot of progress in finding measurable quantities of high
in- formation content for the inverse determination of piezoelectric material
properties. Since some material parameters (mainly \textgreek{e}S 11, e15and cE
    44) do not or only marginally influence the electrical impedance over frequency,
it is not sufficient to look only at the electri- cal impedance of discoidal piezoceramics
[1]. Moreover, the parameter sensitivities vary with respect to the diameter--thickness
ratio of the disc and the design of an ultrasonic transducer's piezoceramic has
to match other requirements than those of a good material characterization [2,
3]. That is why it is still desirable to find model based approaches for parameter
identification that either keep the technical effort low (e.g., only an impedance
measurement) or increase speed of the inversion procedure. In this contribution
we answer the question if an additional analytical approximation of cE 44, strictly
following the ideas of Theocaris [4], in conjunction with a single measured elec-
trical impedance will be sufficient for an accurate simulation of both, electrical
impedance and surface normal velocity of a piezoceramic disc. Thereby, the remaining
parameters are identified by means of the Inverse Method. Furthermore, we use
the parameter ap- proximation as an initial guess and limiting boundary to speed
up the inverse algorithm if both, electrical impedance and surface normal velocity
are taken into account within the optimization procedure.

text: For many applications like level measurement and industry robotics it is of
advantage if the directional characteristic of an ultrasonic transducer is changeable
or adaptable for the improvement of spatial resolution. Often this goal is reached
with the use of ultrasonic transducer arrays, which elements are driven with phase
shifted excitation signals. One disadvantage of these solutions is the great effort
for building such an array and the multi-channel sensor electronics. In this contribution
the directional characteristic of a single air transducer with segmented electrodes
is analyzed. Therefore a variable script based finite element model is used to
discover the influence of different electrode configurations on the directional
characteristic of a single piezoceramic transducer. Especially the influence on
the angle of beam and the near field length are evaluated. The used variable model
permits an optimization of the configuration with regards to the mentioned criteria.
The findings will be used for the development of a level measurement system for
    bulk solids.
