text: 'Classic automated algorithm selection (AS) for (combinatorial) optimization
problems heavily relies on so-called instance features, i.e., numerical characteristics
of the problem at hand ideally extracted with computationally low-demanding routines.
For the traveling salesperson problem (TSP) a plethora of features have been suggested.
Most of these features are, if at all, only normalized imprecisely raising the
issue of feature values being strongly affected by the instance size. Such artifacts
may have detrimental effects on algorithm selection models. We propose a normalization
for two feature groups which stood out in multiple AS studies on the TSP: (a)
features based on a minimum spanning tree (MST) and (b) nearest neighbor relationships
of the input instance. To this end we theoretically derive minimum and maximum
values for properties of MSTs and k-nearest neighbor graphs (NNG) of Euclidean
graphs. We analyze the differences in feature space between normalized versions
of these features and their unnormalized counterparts. Our empirical investigations
on various TSP benchmark sets point out that the feature scaling succeeds in eliminating
the effect of the instance size. A proof-of-concept AS-study shows promising results:
models trained with normalized features tend to outperform those trained with
the respective vanilla features.'

text: 'Automated Algorithm Configuration (AAC) usually takes a global perspective:
it identifies a parameter configuration for an (optimization) algorithm that maximizes
a performance metric over a set of instances. However, the optimal choice of parameters
strongly depends on the instance at hand and should thus be calculated on a per-instance
basis. We explore the potential of Per-Instance Algorithm Configuration (PIAC)
by using Reinforcement Learning (RL). To this end, we propose a novel PIAC approach
that is based on deep neural networks. We apply it to predict configurations for
the Lin\textendash Kernighan heuristic (LKH) for the Traveling Salesperson Problem
(TSP) individually for every single instance. To train our PIAC approach, we create
a large set of 100000 TSP instances with 2000 nodes each \textemdash currently
the largest benchmark set to the best of our knowledge. We compare our approach
to the state-of-the-art AAC method Sequential Model-based Algorithm Configuration
(SMAC). The results show that our PIAC approach outperforms this baseline on both
the newly created instance set and established instance sets.'

text: 'The study explores differences between three user types in the top tweets
about the 2015 “refugee crisis” in Germany and presents the results of a quantitative
content analysis. All tweets with the keyword “Flüchtlinge” posted for a monthlong
period following September 13, 2015, the day Germany decided to implement border
controls, were collected (N = 763,752). The top 2,495 tweets according to number
of retweets were selected for analysis. Differences between news media, public
and private actor tweets in topics, tweet characteristics such as tone and opinion
expression, links, and specific sentiments toward refugees were analyzed. We found
strong differences between the tweets. Public actor tweets were the main source
of positive sentiment toward refugees and the main information source on refugee
support. News media tweets mostly reflected traditional journalistic norms of
impartiality and objectivity, whereas private actor tweets were more diverse in
sentiments toward refugees. '

text:
Young adults with a later chronotype are vulnerable for a discrepancy
in sleep rhythm between work- and free days, called social jet lag (SJL). This
study analysed (i) chronotype/SJL association with visceral fat/skeletal muscle
mass, (ii) the attribution to physical activity behaviour, and (iii) chronotype-specific
changes in physical activity behaviour in young adults during the Covid-19 pandemic
lockdown. Chronotype and SJL were derived from the Munich-Chrono-Type-Questionnaire
in 320 German students (age 18–25 years) from September 2019 to January 2020,
156 of these participated in an online follow-up survey in June 2020. Body composition
was assessed by bioimpedance analysis at baseline. Multivariable linear regression
analyses were used to relate chronotype/SJL to body composition; the contribution
of self-reported physical activity was tested by mediation analysis. At baseline,
a later chronotype and a larger SJL were associated with a higher visceral fat
mass (P<0.05), this relation was notably mediated by the attention to physical
activity (P<0.05). Chronotype (P = 0.02) but not SJL (P = 0.87) was inversely
associated with skeletal muscle mass. During the pandemic lockdown, chronotype
hardly changed, but SJL was reduced. Timing and physical activity behaviour remained
in most participants and changes were unrelated to chronotype (all P>0.07).
A later chronotype/higher SJL may increase the risk of a higher visceral fat mass
even in this relatively healthy sample, which may be partly due to their physical
activity behaviour. Despite a reduction in SJL during the pandemic lockdown, later
chronotypes did not change their physical activity behaviour more than earlier
chronotypes.

\
The German total diet study (TDS)—BfR MEAL Study—established
its food list in 2016 based on food consumption data of children (0.5–<5 years)
and adults (14–80 years). The list consists of 356 foods selected for analysis
in order to ensure ≥90% coverage of the diet. Recently, new food consumption data
for children (0.5–<6 and 6–<12 years) in Germany became available, which
raised the opportunity to evaluate the applicability of the MEAL food list 2016
on new data.
\r\n
\r\n
Objective
\r\n
\
We tested the hypotheses that the MEAL food list 2016 also
covers ≥90% of the diet of the new collected food consumption data, and that the
selection of foods from younger children and adults was sufficient to also cover
the middle age group (6–<12 years). Strategies for updating the existing food
list were assessed.
\r\n
\r\n
Methods
\r\n
\
Three approaches evaluated the reusability and potential
adjustment strategies of the existing food list. Approach 1 applied the existing
food list to new food consumption data. Approach 2 allowed the extension of the
existing food list to improve coverage of food consumption. Approach 3 set up
a new food list based on the new data.
\r\n
\r\n
\
Results
\r\n
The MEAL
food list 2016 covered 94% of the overall diet of the new collected food consumption
data. The diet of the middle age group was sufficiently covered with 91%. However,
coverage on main food group or population subgroup level was <90% in some cases.
Approach 3 most accurately identified relevant modifications to the existing food
list. 94% of the MEAL food list 2016 could be re-used and 51 new foods were identified
as potentially relevant.
\r\n
\r\n
Significance
\r\n
\
The results suggest that a high investment in the coverage
of a TDS food list will lower the effort and the resources to keep data updated
in the long-term.
\r\n
\r\n
Impact
\r\n
\
There is no established approach to update a TDS food list.
This study provides comparative approaches to handle newly collected food consumption
data for follow-on TDS activities. The results provide useful information for
institutions planning or updating a TDS. Furthermore, new food consumption data
for children in Germany recently became available and are here presented for the
first time.
\r\n
"

text: "Regularization is used in many different areas of optimization when solutions\r\nare
sought which not only minimize a given function, but also possess a certain\r\ndegree
of regularity. Popular applications are image denoising, sparse\r\nregression
and machine learning. Since the choice of the regularization\r\nparameter is crucial
but often difficult, path-following methods are used to\r\napproximate the entire
regularization path, i.e., the set of all possible\r\nsolutions for all regularization
parameters. Due to their nature, the\r\ndevelopment of these methods requires
structural results about the\r\nregularization path. The goal of this article
is to derive these results for\r\nthe case of a smooth objective function which
is penalized by a piecewise\r\ndifferentiable regularization term. We do this
by treating regularization as a\r\nmultiobjective optimization problem. Our results
suggest that even in this\r\ngeneral case, the regularization path is piecewise
smooth. Moreover, our theory\r\nallows for a classification of the nonsmooth features
that occur in between\r\nsmooth parts. This is demonstrated in two applications,
namely support-vector\r\nmachines and exact penalty methods."

text: The technical importance of paraffins as phase change materials (PCM) in heat
storage systems increases. Knowledge on the thermal conductivity of paraffins
is necessary for the design and optimization of heat storage systems. However,
for most paraffins solely the thermal conductivity of the liquid state has been
sufficiently investigated. For the solid state, precise thermal conductivity data
are only known for a few paraffins, while only generalized values are available
for the remainder, some of which contradict each other. In this study, a measurement
setup based on the modified guarded hot plate method is developed. It is used
to investigate the thermal conductivity of several paraffines in the solid state,
including pure n-docosane and its compounds with different types and concentrations
of graphite. For n-docosane in the solid state, the thermal conductivity is determined
to be 0.49 W/(m K). A particle size of 200 μm with a spherical shape turns out
to be optimal to increase the thermal conductivity. This allows the thermal conductivity
of a compound with 10% graphite to increase by a factor of three compared to the
pure paraffin. Furthermore, significant differences to thermal conductivity data
from the literature are found.

text:
Abstract. The combination of incremental sheet metal forming and high-speed
forming offers new possibilities for flexible forming processes in the production
of large sheet metal components of increased complexity with relatively low forming
energies. In this paper, the general feasibility and process differences between
the pulse-driven high-speed forming technologies of electrohydraulic and electromagnetic
forming were investigated. An example component made of EN AW 6016 aluminum sheet
metal was thus formed incrementally by both processes and the forming result evaluated
by an optical 3D measurement system. For this purpose, a forming strategy for
electromagnetic incremental forming (EMIF) was developed, tested and adapted to
the electrohydraulic incremental forming process (EHIF). The discharge energy,
the tool displacement and the pressure field of the forming zone were determined
as relevant parameters for the definition of an adequate tool path strategy. It
was found that the EHIF process is less affected by larger distances between the
tool and the blank, while this is a critical variable for force application to
the component during EMIF. On the other hand, the more uniform pressure distribution
of the EMIF process is advantageous for forming large steady component areas.

text:
The current investigation shows the feasibility of 316L steel powder
production via three different argon gas atomisation routes (closed coupled atomisation,
free fall atomisation with and without hot gas), along with subsequent sample
production by laser powder bed fusion (PBF-LB). Here, a mixture of pure Fe and
atomised 316L steel powder is used for PBF-LB to induce a chemical composition
gradient in the microstructure. Optical microscopy and μ-CT investigations proved
that the samples processed by PBF-LB exhibit very little porosity. Combined EBSD-EDS
measurements show the chemical composition gradient leading to the formation of
a local fcc-structure. Upon heat treatment (1100 °C, 14 h), the chemical composition
is homogeneous throughout the microstructure. A moderate decrease (1060 to 985
MPa) in the sample’s ultimate tensile strength (UTS) is observed after heat treatment.
However, the total elongation of the as-built and heat-treated samples remains
the same (≈22%). Similarly, a slight decrease in the hardness from 341 to 307
HV1 is observed upon heat treatment.

text: "This paper reveals the 3D character of the intermetallic layer at the aluminum–steel
interface which pops\r\nup above the original sample surface during annealing.
Popping out of the intermetallics was proven using\r\natomic force microscopy.
The phase expands out of the plane due to the exothermic formation of the Al5Fe2\r\nphase
and the feasibility of surface diffusion. Milling by a focused ion beam enabled
the comparison of the\r\nchemical composition of the surface layer with the bulk
interface, showing no difference. The growth direction\r\nis both towards aluminum
and steel — the main diffusion flux is from aluminum towards steel, and the new\r\nintermetallic
phase emerges at the steel side. The shortage of Al atoms causes a shift of the
intermetallic as a\r\nwhole towards aluminum."
